"The Fangs of Sithis must not fall into the hands of the ignorant.."
I left the ancient Argonian ruins with a single Fang of Sithis. According to Looks-Under-Rocks, the Renrijra pirates are in an uproar. They may be feeling the effects of the other Fang in their midst.

Quick Walkthrough[edit]

  1. Talk to Looks-Under-Rocks.
  2. Find the key to the hold of the ship.
  3. Find the Fang of Sithis.
  4. Find Looks-Under-Rocks at his camp.

Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

Speak to Looks-Under-Rocks to begin the quest:

"The pirates must have gotten into the ruins. This door to the xanmeer isn't sealed.
I'll wager the commotion I heard from the pirates' ship involves the missing Fang."
If it affects them like it affected Barvyn, I wouldn't be surprised.
"I heard pirates beg Captain Nahrevii for mercy. Then, screams. That's the other Fang's influence at work.
I'll take the first Fang of Sithis to our secondary camp not far from here. Get the other Fang away from the pirates and meet me there."
I'll get that Fang.

Board the Renrijra pirates' ship, The Clenched Jaws; you'll get a quest objective telling you to find a key to the hold. You'll find that small fires have been started on the deck, and that the pirates are hostile to you. If you're careful, you can sneak right to the key: while making your way into the ship, give the pirate who's stomping out flames a wide berth; then, sneak around two pirates holed up inside and steal the key to the ship's hold from a lockbox. Enter the ship: you'll see more fires, and you'll hear the crew arguing with the captain:

First Mate: "... is madness! You need this ship! You need us!"
Captain Nahrevii: "Need? This one needs nothing but the Fang!"

It turns out that Captain Nahrevii has been using the Fang of Sithis on her own crew, in the hopes of resurrecting her sister. Kill her and loot the Fang from her corpse. Then, exit the ship and look for Looks-Under-Rocks to the north. Speak to him:

"You survived! Truly the Hist guides you.
But did you succeed?"
I found the second Fang of Sithis.
"I thank you, as should all Argonians. It would have been better had the Fangs been left buried, but now they've been unearthed, we must keep them safe.
So far, you're the only person unaffected by them."
Why is that?
"I'm not sure. It worries me, but not as much as the Fangs in the wrong hands.
Here, take the first Fang while I consider what we should do with them."
All right. I hope I remain immune to them.

At this point, three Shadowscales will approach, and their leader will speak:

Sharava: "Stop! Don't move, or I'll strike you down!"

Speak to her:

"Stop! You have no idea what you're doing. Those relics are the property of the Night Mother.
We felt their emanations the moment you removed them from their resting places, thief. Give them to me or pay the price."
Who are you?
"Sharava of the Shadowscales. The Fangs of Sithis must not fall into the hands of the ignorant.
Hand them over or face the Night Mother's wrath!"
We went through a lot to get these Fangs. Why are they so important?
"The Fangs were gifts from the Dark Husband to the Night Mother. Sithis gave them to her and we model our weapons after them. If these truly are the original Fangs, they are both great and terrible artifacts.
And they belong to the Shadowscales."
Why shouldn't I keep the Fangs? I recovered them.
Who is the Night Mother?
"You don't know and yet you recovered the Fangs?
The Night Mother is the bride of Sithis, audience to the Black Sacrament. She holds the power of life and death. Do not defy us, for we act on her behalf."
Why shouldn't I keep the Fangs? I recovered them.
"The Fangs are powerful relics from another age that would overwhelm your soul. I'm surprised they haven't already. They are only safe in our hands.
And if that's not a good enough reason, we'll kill you if you keep them. Decide now."

You can speak to her again:

"Do not cross the Shadowscales. We have a long reach and even longer memories."
I've seen what the Fangs can do to people. Why are you any different?
"The Fangs are our birthright! They are dangerous, yes, but the Night Mother will shield us from the worst of their influence.
And if they overwhelm me, the other Shadowscales won't hesitate to send me back to the Hist."
I need to talk to Looks-Under-Rocks before I decide.
[exits dialogue]
You've convinced me. Take the Fangs.

You can also speak to Looks:

"The Shadowscales want the Fangs of Sithis. There are so many of them!
But they're dangerous. The Fangs in the hands of assassins? I can't imagine anything worse."
We've seen what the Fangs can do to people. Will the Shadowscales be able to control them?
"I don't know. But even if they can, then what?
The Shadowscales undergo rigorous mental, physical, and spiritual training from an early age. Maybe they could hold the Fangs safely, but wouldn't that make them too powerful?"
I need to talk to Sharava before I decide.
[exits dialogue]
I'm not turning the Fangs over to the Shadowscales. Hold onto them. I'll protect you.

Siding with Sharava[edit]

Sharava will be pleased with your decision. Continue your conversation with her to complete the quest:

"You are wise. I see now why you were the one destined to recover the Fangs.
Give them to me. I swear we will keep them safe."
Here you are.
"We'll keep the Fangs safe, as well as your friend here. He will be honored by the Shadowscales for what he did.
For you, I have a gift. This is one of the weapons I spoke of, made in the Fangs' image. Wield it well."

Once the quest is complete, the Shadowscales will depart, masking their disappearances with smoke bombs.

Siding with Looks[edit]

Looks-Under-Rocks will be nervous about your decision:

"All right. It's likely we'll both die here, but you've accomplished miracles already. Perhaps fending off a band of Shadowscales isn't beyond your power.
Give me the Fangs."
Here, take them.

Once you've handed the Fangs over, the Aspect of Sithis — a red, ghostly giant snake — will appear, and all present, including the Shadowscales, will cower in fear. Speak to the Aspect of Sithis:

"Lesser being ... there is a void within you. I find it intriguing."
Are you the god Sithis?
"Ha! To try to put a name on me is to try and hold chaos in your hand, mortal!
If it helps you stay sane, think of me as a miniscule piece of Sithis ... a jot of intellect and will, contained within this shadowed form."
What can I do for you?
"Politeness without obsequiousness! A welcome change. You would make a good Shadowscale.
Mortal, you have done enough for me. The Fangs have lain dormant too long. They should be in the world again."
Do you want me to give them to the Shadowscales?
"Why? They are already champions of the Night Mother. No, leave them their own tools.
You awoke the Fangs, you may wield one while I keep the other. Your friend already holds my gift. Take it, and use it as you will. I will see you again sometime, mortal."
Thank you.

The Aspect of Sithis will disappear, and the Shadowscales with it. Speak to Looks-Under-Rocks to complete the quest:

"I can't believe we survived that! You made the right choice, I think. Anything else would have been disaster."
What do we do now?
"I don't know what you're planning, but I need a good, long rest. I'll head over to Hatching Pools in a few days.
You have a new weapon to try out, I think. I wish you luck, and long life!"

These Shadowscales appeared out of nowhere. I should talk to their leader, Sharava and find out what they want.
