  3. Examine the Bone Scepter in the Base Camp.
  4. Defeat the Pale Sentinel.
  5. Recover Vastarie's wards.
  6. Pursue Telacar.
  7. Decide who to bind with the Bone Sceptor.

Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

When it comes time to reinforce the inner sanctum walls, you must use Vastarie's Journal in order to do so. The round room in the center of the Ossuary of Telacar has many altars, but only four are needed to place keys upon. Each time you place one of the keys, the alter will light up with a blue flame.

  • Place the old skull on The Lord's Altar.
  • Place the milky rock on The Atronach's Altar.
  • Place the glowing vial on The Apprentice's Altar.

When you are done, Telacar's Projection appears in front of a door. Speak to it.

Telacar: Who are you? Why have you invaded my home?

You: Your undead servants attacked Mages Guild explorers.

Telacar: The shades defend my home from thieves. Neither I nor my servants bear any interest in the living. My work concerns one who died long ago. And now, I would know why this creature travels with you.

You: It wanted to seal you away.

Telacar: Simple-minded thing. Those wards haven't contained me for decades. I remain within by choice. Now, I'm at a critical juncture in my research and I need this creature to complete it. If you interfere, I'll drive you from my home. Now, begone!

Pale Sentinel: No, please! I don't want to stay here!"

The Pale Sentinel and ghost of Telacar both disappear into Telacar's Inner Sanctum at this point. You are tasked with defeating Calion's Husk within the Inner Sanctum, so follow them through the door. The next room you enter contains the boss, Calion's Husk, as well as eight bookshelves. Make sure to read them for those Lorebook achievements. Calion's Husk has a little over 73,000 hit points. Once it is dead, you must go to the Throne Room, still moving South.

Within the Throne Room you will find the Projection of Telacar and the Pale Sentinel. Talk to Telacar.

Telacar: Again, you trouble me at a critical juncture? What must I do to hasten your departure?

You: Tell me what you're doing here.

Telacar: Attempting to restore my son, despite your interruptions! That creature is a piece of him, an imperfect piece. If I reunite flesh and spirit, I can revive my son.

You: Why are you doing this?

Telacar: He's my son. I'd do anything to restore him to a fraction of himself. With refinement, I can make him whole again. Vastarie thought this hubris. If she hadn't left this world, I'd try to make her understand.

You: What didn't she understand?

Telacar: That we could one day be a family again. I needed time to refine my methods, and time I have had. And now, I have his spirit. I don't wish to harm this creature. But without the bone scepter to control it, I must resort to cruder methods.

You: I have the bone scepter.

Telacar: You what? That scepter is crafted from my own bones. It can bind the creature to his immortal husk! Once Calion's wounds knit, I'll summon him here. You must bind the creature to his husk. Set things to how they should be!

You: Why should I do that for you?

Telacar: You fear I would raise an undead army to march through Grahtwood? My wife and I spurned Mannimarco for a reason. But in return for binding this creature to my son's husk, I pledge we will remain within our home, forever.

At this point there are three questions you can ask: "Why shouldn't I set your son's spirit free?" , "How do I know you won't leave this place?" , and "Why did you use your own bones to make the bone scepter?" Telecar assures you of his good intentions and desire to remain with his son in the ruins. Once you're done talking with the projection you will see that the Pale Sentinel is now named Calion and has chains spinning around it. Calion's Husk is also in the room, standing about. You can speak to Calion for further information.

Calion: No ... please, you can't make me be a monster again!

You: What do you want, Calion?

Calion: I don't want to be here anymore. It hurt when I was a monster, it hurt worse than these chains. I want my father to sleep so I can go away.

You: How can I make your father sleep?

Calion: I don't know. I wish you could use the bone scepter on him. Point it at his body, there on the throne, and tell him to go to sleep. Then I could finally leave.

You: Where would you go?

Calion: Far away from here, somewhere safe and warm. Somewhere where I'd have friends.

You now have a choice: whether to bind Calion's spirit to his husk as his father requests, or to bind Telecar to his skeleton, freeing Calion.

If you choose to bind Calion:

Use the Bone Scepter on the Husk. When you do, Calion will plea for you not to let the Husk take him. The two are merged into one, leaving the Husk standing and renamed to Calion. Talk to Telacar once more.

Telacar: Finally, my child is restored to me! There's still much to be done, but you start with clay before moving on to marble. Vastarie, if only you could see how wrong you were.

You: The Mages Guild will expect you to keep your promise.

Telacar: I'll open a portal so you can tell them directly. My servants will defend our home from trespassers, but shall not stray beyond the ruins above. If they seek lost knowledge, the Reliquary of Stars is a wonderful old ruin. And it isn't here.

Complete the quest and receive your reward.

If you choose to bind Telecar and free Calion:

Use the Bone Scepter on Telecar, sitting on the throne at the far end of the room. Telecar's projection will be drawn back into his skeleton and Calion's Husk will collapse. Speak to the spirit of Calion.

Calion: You did it. You did it! I'm free. I'm finally free! Thank you, thank you!

You: What will you do now?

Calion: I don't know. But whatever it is, I'll be far away from here. Telacar can't hurt me anymore. Here, I can open a portal so you can be with your friends. Tell them I'm sorry about the shades. As long as they stay away, they should be fine.

Complete the quest and receive your reward.

Notes[edit]

  • Depending on whom you choose to bind, Vastarie will have differing dialogue while completing the quest Eyes of Azura.
  • If you already helped Vastarie in the quest Eyes of Azura, Calion will have different dialogue and will decide to meet her at her tower.

Bugs[edit]

  • Could not place the three item on the platform despite having it in inventory. It will only display "Goodbye" option. Workaround is to stand directly in front of the platform. Then, move the camera downward and click on it again. ?

Quest Stages[edit]

The Unquiet Dead
Finishes Quest Journal Entry
I found a map of the area on the body of a Mages Guild explorer. It mentioned someone named "Andewen" in a nearby base camp. I should try to find Andewen and learn what's going on.
Objective: Talk to Andewen
Some Mages Guild acolytes were captured by hostile shades. I should free them and see if they know what caused all of this.
Objective: Rescue Acolytes
Objective Hint: Rescue Last Acolyte
When I rescued the last acolyte I could find, he ran to safety. I should follow him and see if he knows what's causing this.
Objective: Talk to Kelurmend
Kelurmend told me the trouble began when the Mages Guild unearthed a bone scepter. I should see if I can examine it for myself.
Objective: Find the Bone Scepter in the Base Camp
Andewen may know more about this bone scepter that seems to have awakened the shades. I should speak with her.
Objective: Talk to Andewen
Andewen thinks the bone scepter may exert some form of control on "the Pale Sentinel." If I can find the creature and test her theory, I may be able to force the shades back into the ground.
Objective: Defeat the Pale Sentinel
The Pale Sentinel fled to the center of the ruins after I tried to control it with the bone scepter. I should pursue it in its weakened state and attempt to control it completely.
Objective: Talk to the Pale Sentinel
The Pale Sentinel wants to escape the reach of Telacar. Whether or not I believe him, an ancient necromancer waking in the middle of Grahtwood is a serious problem. I should enter the ossuary crypt and see what I can do to prevent Telacar from waking.
Objective: Enter Ossuary Crypt
I entered the ossuary crypt. I should speak with the Pale Sentinel about how to prevent Telacar from waking.
Objective: Talk to the Pale Sentinel
Telacar is kept asleep by a ward upon his inner sanctum, but the ward is failing. To reinforce it I will need four relics scattered throughout the Ossuary of Telacar. The Pale Sentinel will help me by distracting undead servants I mark with the bone scepter.
Objective: Collect Milky Rock
Objective: Collect Vastarie's Journal
Objective: Collect Glowy Vial
Objective: Collect Old Skull
I've recovered what I'll need to reinforce the ward on Telacar's inner sanctum. I need to decipher the method using Vastarie's journal.
Objective: Reinforce Inner Sanctum Ward
Objective Hint: Place Old Skull
Objective Hint: Place Milky Rock
Objective Hint: Place Glowy Vial
Despite reinforcing the ward, Telacar forced his spirit through and captured the Pale Sentinel! He demanded I speak with him.
Objective: Talk to Telacar's Projection
Telacar doesn't seem interested in disturbing the living, but he claimed to be performing a delicate ritual. Then he took the Pale Sentinel away in arcane shackles. I should find out exactly what he's planning to do.
Objective: Enter the Inner Sanctum
Telacar was angry with me for pursuing him. He ordered his son Calion to stop me. I should defeat this abomination if I hope to pursue Telacar further into the ruin.
Objective: Defeat Calion's Husk
I defeated Telacar's "son," Calion. I should pursue Telacar into the throne room.
Objective: Enter the Throne Room
I don't know what Telacar plans, but the Pale Sentinel seems to be in agony. If I hope to stop this, I should speak with Telacar.
Objective: Talk to Telacar
It seems the Pale Sentinel is the spirit of Telacar's dead son, Calion. The necromancer wants me to permanently bind the spirit to its flesh husk. If I do so, he pledges to forever remain within his home.
Objective: Decide who to bind with the Bone Sceptor
Optional Step: Talk to Calion
Finishes quest☑ I turned the bone scepter against Telacar, forcing his spirit to slumber inside his body. I should speak with Calion.
Finishes quest☑ I used the bone scepter to bind Calion. I should speak with Telecar.

  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
