The Vernim Woods ca. 2E 582

Vernim Woods (also called Vernim Wood) is a forested area located in the northern side of the Treva River in the Rift, as part of the province of Skyrim. At the center of the area is a small, wooded basin with a single nordic barrow aptly named the Vault of Vernim in the middle. The basin is surrounded by fall forest, large stones, dried creeks, and dirt roads that circle around it. By the late Third Era, there was a settlement that shared the same name called Vernim Wood.

History[edit]

The origins of Vernim Woods' vault are unknown and the area has been mostly untouched. But that changed in 2E 582 when the Order of the Black Worm formed an alliance with three Reach clans, the Boneshapers, the Rageclaw, and the Stonetalons. In exchange for their attack on Shor's Stone and Fallowstone Hall to the east, the Worm Cult would magically enhance the three clans with the magic of Molag Bal. The leader of the Rageclaw Clan, Stral Blackthroat and Worm cultists would perform the ritual that would, in turn, spread magic to the Reachmen across Vernim Woods.

The Ebonheart Pact led by Centurion Gjakil and Dajaheel was able to corner them in Vernim Woods and found it enveloped in Bloodthorn Vines. When the King's Arrow arrived on the scene, they were enlisted to investigate the Reachmen and Worm Cult, to learn what their intentions were in the woods. With the help of an undercover agent, Belron, they learned about their plan to enhance the clans with dark energy. Belron tasked the King's Arrow to recover the heart of Reach necromancers, who used themselves as conduits to spread the energy. With all obstacles terminated, all was left was to kill Stral and disrupt the ritual. They first deactivated the death shroud over the vault and fought their way through the ruins until they confronted Stral. In the end, the Reach clans were defeated but both Belron and Dajaheel were killed in the process. Despite the victory, the Worm Cult still posed a significant threat and so Centurion Gjakil sent the King's Arrow to warn Thane Fjora in Nimalten.

During the Imperial Simulacrum in the late Third Era, the town of Vernim Wood was an active settlement. It was ruled by Duke Sorens and had a rivalry with Amol and Sunguard. Vernim Wood was neighbored by several settlements, including Pargran Village to the west, Reich Corigate to the southwest, and Riften to the south.
