Sic tag[edit]

According to http://www.thefreedictionary.com/worshiped both "worshipped" and "worshiped" are fine (Merriam-Webster says the same, but direct links to there don't work). Personally I don't think we should add sic tags if it is a valid variant spelling, they are actually distracting when reading some text. --Alfwyn (talk) 22:56, 31 October 2012 (GMT)

It's inconsistently spelled in the book, the double p appears more often, therefore this is the inconsistent one. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 22:58, 31 October 2012 (GMT)
Yes, it isn't used consistently in the text, so what? In my opinion, as long as readers are not really tempted to change a typo, a sic tag is not needed. We don't need to proofread the material. --Alfwyn (talk) 23:04, 31 October 2012 (GMT)
Worshipped is the preferred spelling according to our Style Guide. Whether people are familiar with the guide or not, however, some may still try to change the spelling, so this is a perfectly applicable usage of the sic tag. eshetalk 23:08, 31 October 2012 (GMT)
Our style guide states that quoted text should not be changed. And people may actually try to change any number of words that have variant spellings for some reason. We should not try to find occasions were it is permissible to use a sic tag, but only use it if it is really necessary. --Alfwyn (talk) 23:24, 31 October 2012 (GMT)
I agree with you in theory, but I've seen people try to change spellings like this tons of times before, and I honestly don't see how it's hurting anything, especially with the wording of the tag how it is now. eshetalk 23:27, 31 October 2012 (GMT)

() There is no inconsistency as the word worshiped/worshipped doesn't appear more than once, and whether it has one or two p's can't always be accurately determined by the spelling of worshiper/worshipper. A sic tag with the note "alternate spelling" might be better. Vely►t►e 23:47, 31 October 2012 (GMT)
