I noticed that when you have a rest. health constant effect enchantment the magnitude jumps between the max and min values instead of remaining constant. What's up with this?

Area restore Health[edit]

An area version of Restore Health appears to only heal allies of the main target. Tested (on PC GOTY edition) using a melee weapon enchanted with restore health 7 points in 5 ft on target, cast on strike. This was to get a sparring partner (rat) to last longer for melee training. The basic version, healing the rat the weapon hit, worked fine, but when I tried to add an area to the heal to heal myself as well that didn't work; it did however heal all the rats if I was fighting more than one and switching targets so they were all damaged to some degree. Adding a second effect to the weapon (heal target 5 pts, heal self 5 pts) did get my desired effect, but was vulnerable to the on-target bug giving me permanent regeneration, which was not desirable.

Not yet tested:

- the same effect in a spell rather than enchanted item (which should work the same way, but there are some quirky differences between spell and enchantment effects)

- what happens with a null main target (setting the projectile off by hitting ground/water, rather than a creature)

- whether other positive effects obey the same friend-or-foe distinction

While data from MCP, OpenMW, and so on is useful, those make changes to enchantment and spell effects (either bug-fixes or re-balancing), so the version tested should be noted with any results.

This is not unique to Restore Health; no area-effect spell which you cast on a target will affect you. This allows you to, say, cast a Fire Damage in 10ft spell on a target that's less than 10 feet away without doing yourself in in the process. Only "on Self" spells will affect the Player Character; "on Touch" and "on Target" spells will only affect the target(s) upon which they're cast. — Wolfborn(Howl) 01:32, 6 April 2022 (UTC)
Oh, so it isn't a friend-or-foe distinction, it is that "area" doesn't include the PC unless the spell is on-self. I'll have to see if an area on self effect in the weapon will fix the rats. I also wonder if that explains some of the conflicting comments over on the reflect talk page about what happens if an area spell gets reflected. Thanks! 50.99.31.146 01:56, 6 April 2022 (UTC)
I'm fairly sure an "on Self" area effect spell will not heal the rats, since "on Self" refers specifically to the PC (i.e., I'm pretty sure that "on Self" spells will not affect anything but the PC). Worth a quick test, however, just to be certain. — Wolfborn(Howl) 02:13, 6 April 2022 (UTC)
Edit: Clarification: Thinking about it, it's not quite accurate to say an "on Touch" or "on Target" spell will not affect the PC; it is more accurate to say that such spells will not affect the caster. Similarly, an "on Self" spell will (I'm fairly certain) only affect the caster, and nothing else. — Wolfborn(Howl) 02:51, 6 April 2022 (UTC)
