Quest doesn't update after killing Umbra

Steal Umbra from Umbra without killing him?

Is it possible to steal Umbra off of Umbra without killing him? If I cast disentegrate weapon on him over and over to break the weapon without talking to Umbra and starting the duel, and then I pickpocket the weapon off of him, could I then calm him and refuse the duel?
