When I took this quest (at level 21) Clavicus' Hound, Barbas, disappeared off the shrine and appeared in my pack. As I was running about Barbas advised me not to complete the quest, since it was a bit of bad business, and to just walk away.   • ---Note: The armor you get off Umbra is called "Umbra's Ebony ____", which my look like actualy ebony but is much weaker, if you have orcish armor when you are doing this, just sell her armor, because it weighs more then orcish but has the exact same defense.
    • ---Reply: Actually, "Umbra's Ebony ____" is leveled. At level 15 or higher it's full ebony. Below that level, it has the look and weight of ebony armor, but the sale value, durability and armor ratings are lower, more along the line of orcish armor.
  • --- Note: Now, some of you may get the wrong idea when people say she's pretty tough to beat, but she really isn't that strong, I recomend having a short invisibility spell and getting a sneak attack on her. Also, if you have a weapon with a somewhat good enchantment, she wont be as much of a problem, I had an Akavair Katana with a 15 point damage health effect, and I really didn't need "20 strong potions of healing", more like 4 normal potions of healing. I was a level 9 when I beat her.
  • --- Note: If you choose to keep the sword, don't turn in the quest. The sword will have 0 weight then freeing up some nice inventory space. If you turn in the quest but keep the sword it will weigh 45 pounds (or whatever units the weight is in).
  • --- Note: I used a lightning-staff to defeat Umbra. A bit cheap, but it worked. I was lvl 12 or something. There is a little ledge on the wall, to your left as you jump down(just where ju enter the room, if you dont use the stairs) Just stand there and shoot her to pieces. She will run around like crazy, swinging Umbra about, but she can't hit you.
  • --- Note: I killed Umbra with no problems at all at level 5. Here's the trick: Attack her once to get her to follow you. Then run as fast as you can to the first trap room, the one with the falling floor. Lure Umbra out on the middle, and jump away as the floor falls (or you'll die). She will lose a little over 100 health at a time I think, so do this a couple of times and voilà, there's Umbra for you. What I did was basically blocking in the middle of the floor, then she recoiled and I jumped away. Remember that if she is not in the middle of the floor (over the spikes) when it falls, she will just lose about 10 health or so from falling. You can watch her health by opening the console, clicking Umbra and typing "getav health". And by the way, remember to bring some healing potions, because even though you are blocking, she will cap off your health pretty fast.   • --- Note: In the PC version there is a possible bug. I killed Umbra and obtained the sword before I visited Clavicus Vile. When I approached the shrine, the speech started and then before it was finished speaking a quest window appeared stating I had got the Umbra sword. After that, your stuck. The screen can still be moved, but you can't walk or take any action. Back to the previous save!
  • I'll just add this here in discussion to not clutter up the other suggestions - I justed used a "Strong potion of Paralysis" on my daedric shortsword. It is a fast, low fatique weapon and she was dead before the 7 seconds of her paralysis was up. Kind of dissappointing and unsportsman like I guess, but tactic is part of the game :-) --Joey the AngMo
  • -Kate's Super Easy and Lazy Method of Defeating Umbra!:
    • 1.Be in sneak mode
    • 2.Stand on the overlooking hallway or whatever you call it where Umbra can be seen below
    • 3.Equip an enchanted bow (I used bow of scorching), a really awesome arrow (I used arrow of savage frost, it has frost damage 40pts in 10ft for 2sec), and use poison of illness on it.
    • 4.Aim and fire at Umbra, and she will die if not instantly, in a second when the enchantments and poison do their job.

Absolutely no effort or actual fighting required. Good method for those not strong enough or too intimidated to attack headon. I tried this method at levels 10 and 16 (I wanted to see how much better the sword would be if i actually leveled up for once) and it worked flawlessly. I'm not sure how good the arrow must be,I just had the savage frost ones from the lots of loot obtained from the mehrunes razor quest. Hope it helped! :) --Coolmoosekate 03:02, 1 October 2006 (EDT)

  • -:Easy way to kill Umbra:

If you can get to Arcan University, crete powerful Chameleon spells (they do not need to last long) and use them before you talk to her. If you can get your Chameleon to over 100%, she will not see you and you will win her very easily. Any other ways to increase your chameleon can also be combined with spells if your magicka is low; potions, Ring of Khajiiti, or enchanted armors. -- 17:18, 20 July 2007 (EDT)

Umbra's Damage

Actually, no, it does not say "up to", it says "points of base damage". All weapon damage values on the site are provided as base damage, and it is explained in multiple places that base damage is not maximum damage. So I'm changing it back to the correct base value which is 28. --NepheleTalk 21:14, 8 April 2007 (EDT)

Aeonz Plan for not killing Umbra

  • Please add this to the bug part of this Wiki page.
    • Confirmed On XBOX 360 unpatched version.
      • So you get this quest then kill umbra get the sword then you go back and the game crashes. Fun eh. Here's Aeonz plan to not kill umbra, get the sowrd, and the quest without a crash, have no bounty or wanted level, and not get contacted by the dark brotherood. And its easy.
        • Save before you talk to the shrine. Get quest and see where you need to go. Remember, Reload save game.
        • Go to the marker and go inside, kill the oppasition and get to umbra. Look around the room. there will be 4 pillirs one cracked. Important. There is a tomb that you can jump on to get up on the wall. Where ledges stick out. Get up there and cast a disingrate weapon spell on Umbra till she breaks Umbra The sword, After it breaks cast a parilise spell and steal Umbra from her. Cast a invisable spell and run like hell., No bounty, no death, got the sword, and the game will not crash. Leave Umbra where she is and when you want to do the brotherhood quest go fnish and Un Umbraed Umbra with ease...

Although I saw this note while I was working on these pages yesterday, I did not try to add this content because 75% of it is not new information, and the remaining part I don't really understand.
  • What does this have to do the bug part of the page? I don't see that this provides any new information on avoiding the glitch, and in general I don't see why more effort needs to be put into explaining this glitch when all you need to do to get rid of it is install the patch.
  • How do you not get a bounty doing this? Disintegrate weapon is an offensive spell; casting it on Umbra should count as an assault.
  • Why do you need to paralyze Umbra? Doesn't she just drop the sword on the ground when it's fully disintegrated?
  • If she doesn't drop the sword, then why go through the disintegrate rigmarole? Why not just take it from her right away?
I'm not trying to dismiss your comments. It's just that if I'm going to be responsible for adding new content to a page, and have my name ultimately attached to something, I need to be confident that I believe the statement. The standard patch is available for Xbox and fixes this bug, so I'm not sure why you're saying there is no patch for this bug. --Nephele 11:00, 8 December 2006 (EST)
What about those of us not online? I tried the supposed fast travel method too, and it didn't seem to work. I fast travelled numerous times but wherever you end up it still crashes eventually; fast travelling just prolongs the time it takes to crash. To beat the glitch, I loaded an earlier save, and killed Umbra and got her sword before actually activating the Clavius Vile quest. If you do this and already have the Umbra sword when speaking to the deadra for the first time, the mission is over almost automatically, most of the dialogue involved in the quest is skipped, but the game doesn't crash. This seems to be the only way to beat the glitch and complete the quest in unpatched versions of the game. The downside to this is that killing Umbra before activating the Clavius Vile quest is counted as murder. Jimd 09:49, 4 February 2007 (EST)

Before loading your last game if the fast travel method still freezes the screen, make sure to load your last autosave. My game froze and when I reloaded the dog was gone. And Nephele, not everyone is online, not everyone has a hard-drive, and not everyone is in the habit of using patches and mods. The same crash happens to me and i have my xbox online. so it would have to automatically update the game right?.. I tried putting the game in when it was online but it never updated it, when was the fix released? and if my xbox wont auto update it how do i do that? This quest was pretty good too it sucks that i cant finish it. i want to see what the mask does

How to beat Umbra at any level without damaging her armor or sword and without incurring any penalty

I obtained Umbra's armor and sword while I was still at level 1 and working my way around the circuit of forts, caves, and ruins that surround the Imperial City, simply to gain experience and to get loot in order to improve my lot (in fact, doing this, I got nearly 20,000 gold while still at level 1). When I first encountered Umbra, assuming that she was just another bandit (I couldn't see her armor properly at distance and in the gloom), I attacked her from the gallery in the way that I had found most effective for bandits - i.e., a head-shot with a bow while in sneak mode (nine times out of ten, this resulted in instant death). I very quickly discovered that she was no ordinary bandit, as, first, the arrow hit had very little noticable effect, then, it seemed that she could run at least twice as fast as me, and, when she caught me, my defence lasted for about two seconds before I became one of her collection of soul gems. This was obviously a very serious adversary, but also obviously one with some seriously desirable equipment, so I didn't want to give up without trying to meet the challenge. After one more fruitless attempt at taking her on with the best attack and defensive options available to me, I began to look around to consider if the environment might aid me. Having encountered a poison gas trap before in a previous ruin that I had visited, I had simply given a wide berth to the one in Umbra's ruin in the chamber before the one she inhabited. I now remembered, however, that traps set to catch the unwary player can often be used against the enemy if you can draw them in without falling foul of the trap yourself. I had also noticed an open gate in the passage between the two chambers, which it now seemed to me to be designed to hinder Umbra's pursuit when closed. Putting these two ideas together, on my third attempt at defeating Umbra, I again fired an arrow at her from the gallery to get her to chase me, but this time as I fled I first closed the gate to delay her pursuit for even a tiny fraction of time. Then, running at full speed, I first jumped directly onto the centre of the poison gas trap and then jumped off again in the next stride and out into the next chamber. I caught a small whiff of the poison gas, which damaged my health by a few points, but the pursuing, and slightly delayed, Umbra caught the full blast of the gas cloud as it rose behind me and she died instantly. It was slightly tricky retrieving her armor and sword without setting off the gas trap again, but I managed it. Not only was all the kit undamaged, apart from a single point due to the arrow, but also there was no murder charge or bounty (it was the gas that killed her) incurred in obtaining it. So, at level 1, I had a very useful set of heavy armor, and a superb sword - weightless and with damage 14, as well as the enchantment to fill my soul gems for recharging all of my enchanted weapons (obtained later). Magic ring found in Vindasel ruins?

The room Umbra has made as her lair in Vindasel contains a chest; it has a hard-difficulty lock to pick on it. Typically this chest contains a couple of magic scrolls, a couple of souls gems, and a rare master level alchemy calcinator. The first time I killed Umbra I picked this chest, and inside was also an enchanted ring with 100% resist disease, 100% resist paralysis and 100% resist all poisons and poison tipped-weapons. I can't remember the name of the ring, however, and I haven't seen such a ring on this Oblivion Wiki.

I have the un-patched xbox 360 version of the game, and when I returned the Umbra sword to Clavius Vile the game crashed, so I loaded an earlier save and beat the glitch by killing Umbra and getting her sword before actually activating the Clavius Vile quest. However, when I went to Umbra's chest the second time, the ring was not there. I found this strange as it was not very much earlier in the game and my character was the same level as when I had found the ring the first time.

Anybody else noticed this? Has anybody seen this ring before? Thanks Jimd 09:49, 4 February 2007 (EST)

The chest in Vindasel is just a boss-level chest, specifically a "DungConjurerBossChestFort", which has a long list of possible magical items that may appear. There is a 10% chance that a magical ring may appear. If you are level 20 or higher there are some 200 possible rings that could appear. One of them is the Ring of Vitality that you found. The fact that you were the same level when you returned makes no difference: the random generation of the chest's contents happens at the moment you enter the door to Vindasel, and given the probabilities involved you could probably try going into Vindasel another 1000 or more times and never find the exact same ring again.
The rest of the chest's contents are also randomly determined. Yes, it will always contain 1 scroll; there's a 25% chance it will contain a second scroll. Both scrolls are randomly determined and basically could be any one of the scrolls listed on the Scrolls page. There's only a 25% chance it will contain any alchemy apparatus, and even then it's not likely to be the master-level calcinator that you found.
There are 12 other locations that have the exact same chest, and hundreds of other boss level chests that all have the exact same probability of containing that ring. So there's nothing really all that special about the chest in Vindasel. And the randomness of the contents of any chest is why the dungeon descriptions just say boring things like "contains a boss-level chest". It is impossible to predict what any player will find in the chest. Yes, they contain the best loot in the game, but you never know when you'll happen to find that one great item. --Nephele 13:54, 4 February 2007 (EST)

Almost every ruin has a boss level chest; the various Places pages mention some of them, but not all (depending upon what the person who wrote the page thought to put there). There are small differences between the ones that you'll find in conjurer ruins vs vampire ruins vs bandit ruins, etc. For example, conjurer boss chests may have alchemy equipment; bandit boss chests may have armor and weapons. There's a bit of info at Oblivion:Dungeons#Loot; I might look into fleshing it out a bit more later today since you've got me thinking about it :) --Nephele 12:28, 5 February 2007 (EST)

A possible way of completing the Clavicus Vile quest and yet keeping Umbra as a zero weight quest object?

Hi Nephele. I have been wondering if it would be possible to complete the Clavicus Vile quest and yet keep Umbra's sword, and as a zero weight quest object, moreover, by employing the same exploit as you advise to use in the "When the Vow Breaks" quest for keeping the enchanted mace Rockshatter - i.e., by speaking to the quest giver while mounted on a horse and with the quest object equipped, which, in the case of the latter quest, results in the game being unable to unequip the object from the player and instead giving another copy of it to the quest giver to complete the quest. Do you think this would work for Umbra too? (I haven't got to that quest yet, so all this is mere speculation on my part.)

By the way, you rather disparage Rockshatter as a relatively weak weapon, and you possibly also think I was wrong to get Umbra's sword so early on (level 1), because it is a levelled weapon, and, if I had waited until I was at a much higher level, then the sword would have been much more powerful. In fact, however, I use a mod called Quest Award Leveller which increases the power of all quest objects, including these two, as I level up, so I feel that I have two very useful zero weight weapons that I can carry around with me indefinitely. Is this cheating? Well, in the context of a fantasy game with all kinds of bizarre rules, I find that hard to decide, but, in any case, having had probably more than 5000g worth of hard-won loot cheated from me by the game (Thank you so much "Chris". What a jape, eh?) because I left it in the Prison Sewer before doing the "Return the Amulet" main quest, I frankly don't care.

The Umbra sword is NOT leveled. Umbra's Ebony Armor is leveled, but the sword is not. At any rate, I doubt that the horse-riding trick would work in this case, since you're not giving the sword to an NPC, but having it removed by a script attached to the statue. Thanks for the compliments, Armod, but I'm definitely not responsible for most of the info that's available here. For example, When the Vow Breaks is actually a page I've never even touched. (And one of my early characters relied on Rockshatter as his primary weapon for a long time, so I'm personally kind of fond of it). As for using leveling mods, the great thing about mods is that everyone gets to play the game the way they like; if you enjoy the game that way, that's the way you should play it :) If you want to know the answer to your Umbra question, it sounds like the best thing to do is give a try yourself at some point; let us know what happens! --Nephele 00:19, 28 February 2007 (EST)
First, apologies and thanks to ALL contributors to these pages. Second, I didn't write the mod that I mentioned and I haven't delved into the precise way in which it works, but I have noticed that the damage rating of Umbra has gone up from 14 when I first got it to 17 now (at a nominal level 6). I haven't used Umbra's armor for some time and it is in storage, so I haven't noticed any increase in armor strength there. Finally, if anyone is baffled by my reference to "Chris", I give this clue which may enlighten some: "Have a nice day :-)". I am, in fact, merely pointing out that, like Morrowind, the game itself cheats and otherwise screws with players for the (rather pathetically remote) amusement of its developers. --Armod195.92.67.75 02:20, 28 February 2007 (EST)
The damage value you see is modified by your Blade skill and Strength, which have probably increased since the last time you touched it. Nothing unusual about that, every weapon will do more damage when your relevant stats increase. --TheRealLurlock Talk 10:13, 28 February 2007 (EST)

Telekinesis blocked?

When I went through the ruins last night, I was using telekinesis to grab the Welkynd stones. When I tried to get the stones in the poision-gas room, however, it seemed like the room was blocking the spell--I'd cast, the stone would glow, but then the spell effect would time out immdiately (as if I had lost sight of the stone). After shooting one of the stones down, I tried using telekinesis to retrieve my arror; same thing happened, even though the arrow was maybe five feet away, in plain view. Can anyone else confirm that telekinesis doesn't work in that room? Are there other rooms which block the spell? 10:38, 14 May 2007 (EDT)

No, telekinesis works ok in that room. Success seems to depend on the location from which you are casting the spell though. Try again from closer to the middle of the room.

I think we can all agree

If you keep Umbra, you still have %100 completion. The Masque is a very very weak artifact, especially considering with a turbo controller you can auto personality pretty quickly. 00:44, 27 July 2007 (EDT)

Nope. The power or practical use of an artifact is irrelevant. Completion maybe for completing all the Daedric quests, but certainly not completion in regards to collecting all the Daedric Artifacts. Keeping Umbra will prevent your 'Artifact's Found' count from reaching the maximum of 15. Ergo, you will not have collected all of the Daedric artifacts. Why the Hell does is say different on the Hermaeus Mora page, then? It says: "It is possible to trigger this quest without receiving Daedric Artifacts from each of the other 14 Daedric quests; officially failing a Daedric quest also counts. For example, if Melus Petilius dies, Molag Bal's quest immediately ends without any chance of a reward; however, Molag Bal's quest still counts as far as Hermaeus Mora is concerned. In general, as long as the Daedric quest is in your list of completed quests, it will count. It doesn't say different. You're asking two different questions. Saruuk's point is about 100% Completion; yours is about the conditions necessary to trigger Hermaeus Mora's quest. And what is your point? Nobody is disagreeing with the sentence that you keep repeating over and over again. In other words, nobody is disputing the fact that you can keep Umbra and still do Hermaeus Mora's quest. But that has nothing to do with 100% completion. couldnt you clone yourself by dropping the skull of crouption near a summon breaking their weapon attacking them taking the skull and cloning you and your killing clone and taking the cloned umbra

While it seems likely, this is impossible. Umbra is explicitly removed from any clone's inventory upon cloning.--Xyntfos 02:40, 13 July 2008 (EDT)

Completing the quest without proper level requirement

After I had spoke to Ma'Raska, I went directly to the Ruins to obtain Umbra, after I had done so, I received the quest update, and then went back to the shrine. I was able to complete the quest even though I was only level 18. I'm not sure if this is mentioned anywhere, as I could not find it. It's a possible bug, but I wouldn't want to add it if I don't have confirmation that others have experienced this. Allanon 08:09, 1 August 2008 (EDT)

Glitched on umbra shrine (clavicus vile's shrine.) I can't seem to get passed the part where you give the shrine god Umbra.

Barbas' Dialogue

Capturing Umbra's soul into a black soul gem

Anybody tried capturing Umbra's soul into a black soul gem by reflecting her sword's enchantment back on her? I don't have an empty black soul gem right now. You need 100% reflect damage and 100% reflect spell to pull this off. WRFan 17:26, 2 October 2009 (UTC)

I trapped her soul in a black soul gem by using a sword I made at the arcane university, it's essentially an elven longsword with frost damage and soul trap on it and that seemed to work just fine. — Unsigned comment by (talk) on 23 December 2009

Removed Bug

I removed a bug from the page: You can also do this quest without being at LV.20 and keep your 500 gold go to Vindasel and kill Umbra and give the sword to Clavicus Vile keep in mind that you mst find the shrine and activate the quest this way dont worry about LV up and giveing up your gold. Difficulty Slider

One thing I noticed, is the Difficulty Slider is NEVER mentioned as a means for doing anything. Want to kill Umbra before you should be able to? Slide it all the way to easy. Seems no less cheap than some other odd methods described. Other instances where suggesting the difficulty slider doesnt happen. Is there some sort of rule of thumb to never recomend it? Or do people just overlook it? It is a useful feature really, especially since many complain Oblivion (and Morrowind which also has it) is too hard or easy, when adjusting this can alter it either way. I just want to understand. Just seems like it could be listed as "If all else fails, adjusting the difficulty slider can make it easier." (Still good to list other methods, saying this before people misinterprate me) Kiutu 18:13, 12 December 2009 (UTC)

It's too obvious to mention. It's something that counts for every game where you can select a difficulty. There is also the bunch of players that feel that changing the difficulty rating to achieve something is wrong. --Timenn-<talk> 14:10, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

Killing Umbra in One Second Flat

If you happen to be playing as a Mage, or as a character with a moderate Destruction skill level, you should be able to create a couple of very powerful spell effects that will enable you to devestate Umbra with little fuss. This was accomplished with a 7th level customized Mage, however, could conceivably be done by anyone at virtually any level with at least a Journeyman level in Destruction skill. I created an elemental spell, trying to push the limits of damage potential (at the characters level and capabilities at that time) in this way: effect 1 - Drain Health 100 points for one second by touch, effect 2 - Fire Damage 22 points for one second by touch, effect 3 - Frost Damage 22 points for one second by touch, effect 4 - Shock Damage 22 points for one second by touch. That was the most optimized I could get at the time. There may be other configurations that can push the damage even higher.

Using this spell, I touched a Guard as a test and put a good dent in him for one second, until the Drain Health effect wore off. I needed a second spell to really optimize it. I created a Weakness to Elements spell that had the following effects: effect 1 - Weakness to Magicka 100% for 6 seconds by touch, effect 2 - Weakness to Fire 100% for 6 seconds by touch, effect 3 - Weakness to Frost 100% for 6 seconds by touch, effect 4 - Weakness to Shock 100% for 6 seconds by touch. In effect, the Weakness to Elements spell enhances the damage output of the Elemental Spell when applied first as a touch attack against your target.

Again, I touched a Guard with the Weakness to Elements spell I just created, then quickly touched him with the Elemental Spell. The Guard died before he could make good on his threat to subdue me. I took this advantage to the next level by taking on Umbra. I touched Umbra with the Weakness to Elements spell, then, just as she attacked, I touched her with the Elemental Spell. The end result, a wounded 7th level High Elf Mage standing over the charred body of Umbra.

This is well within the game constraints and does not require tweaking of difficulty sliders or exploits. It is just plain, straight forward spell creation. 01:46, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

Well, even though is a good method, we're trying to keep it as simple as possible. Back when I was revamping the whole section, I had also added a spell (see this version), with a journeyman skill in Destruction, but it was obviously removed when taking it to this page per the reasons above. --MC S'drassa T2M 02:00, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
