Enchanting Items

(question moved from Help Talk:Contents)

I was wondering if it was possible to enchant an item twice like having a ebony long sword and using two soul gems or two sigil stone or one sigil stone and one soul gem i have the xbox 360 version w/ the nights of the nine and shivering isles — Unsigned comment by 74.140.8.24 (talk)

For weapons, multiple enchantments are possible using a single soul gem (multiple enchantments are not possible using sigil stones); see Oblivion:Enchanting#Enchanting by the Altar(s). For weapons and clothing, multiple enchantments are not possible on any custom-made items.
ok so how exactly do i do that...say i have a piece of armor that i want to have fortify +15 to health and +10 to personality is that possible and if so how do i do it with one soul gem — Unsigned comment by 74.140.8.24 (talk) on 5 January 2008
Ummm... not to be repetitively redundant, but: "For weapons and clothing, multiple enchantments are not possible on any custom-made items." --NepheleTalk 04:28, 5 January 2008 (EST)

How do I enchant more than one enchantment on to a weapon?. When I try and click a second one, it just replaces the original, doesnt add to it. (PS3)

Enchanting Arrows

I tried at my place in Frostcrag Spire, but the Iron Arrows I wish to enchant, all 100k+ of them, dont seem to want to show up. Any tips? ImmortalKaine 01:42, 15 January 2008 (EST)

Anything? ImmortalKaine 02:56, 15 January 2008 (EST)
Patience is a virtue. None of us are paid to do this, you know? You can't enchant arrows, only the bows that shoot them. This is presumably to stop a ridiculously easy way of making money, or possibly just an oversight. –RpehTCE 04:42, 15 January 2008 (EST)
Either that or they dont want you having an arrow that does 100 Fire Damage in a 100ft area for 100 seconds xD ImmortalKaine 12:35, 15 January 2008 (EST)

Disappearing Glitch

(Sorry if this is in the wrong place) I've enchanted some of my armor with Grand Souls (from Black Soul Gems) and I can use them just fine, but if I quit out of Oblivion and get back in, the items aren't in my inventory or anywhere. They just disappear. I can load saves and stuff like that just fine, but if I completely quit out of Oblivion it deletes them. Afterwards I tried with normal Grand Soul Gems, but those disappear too. Anyone know what's happening? (I'm running with Obscuro's Overhaul, by the way) -Xan Kriegor — Unsigned comment by 76.121.125.252 (talk) on 23 January 2008

You have the Reference Bug and need to install the latest patch ASAP. You also probably want to revert to a save from before this problem started occurring, because any save files since the bug appeared are likely to be corrupt in ways that will come back to haunt you later. --NepheleTalk 20:46, 22 January 2008 (EST)

Retail/Wholesale

I can't understand these formulas. Is it possible to capture souls, enchant items, and sell them for a profit? 68.166.64.77 01:21, 9 February 2008 (EST)

Yes. Items shoot up in value when they get enchanted so it can be a fairly good way of making money. –RpehTCE 01:56, 9 February 2008 (EST)
Thanks. Is any particular method more profitable? I enchanted a silver dagger with a lesser soul with 5 fire damage for 3 seconds. I think it cost me like a 100 to enchant, the original dagger was worth like 40. The enchanted item was only worth around 130. Does it get more profitable with stronger gems or did I just have less money than I thought coming in? 68.166.65.162 02:06, 9 February 2008 (EST)
Actually, it looks like you're right. I spoke without thinking and forgot about the enchanting cost. It looks as if you'll need to use Sigil stones to make a big profit on enchanting. Sorry about that! –RpehTCE 03:47, 9 February 2008 (EST)
No problem. 68.166.65.162 23:26, 9 February 2008 (EST)
This technique would work with Sigil Stone enchants though, which are free. Deadlykris 17:11, 10 October 2008 (EDT)
But Sigil Stones are a limited resource in the economy, which makes this unsustainable. If you really want to make money crafting, just brew potions. You can generally expect to get anywhere from 200% to 1,150% profit margin (okay, 11.5 times but it sounds more impressive in percentage) by buying cheap foods and selling them back as Restore Fatigue potions. --85.64.35.231 13:30, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

Interesting oddity

Through the 'permanent bound items' glitch I had a bound dagger, which I didn't need. I set it on the enchanting altar I always use so it'd be available if I thought of a new effect I wanted to add to it later. I then proceeded to enchant a bow with weakness to fire/frost/shock/magic. The interesting thing is that when I completed the bow enchantment the dagger exploded. It very clearly broke into fragments with a 'poof' sound (immediately subsequent to the altar noise) and disappeared. I have tried to recreate this a few times, even pulling up a saved game with the same dagger resting on the altar, but it hasn't happened again. Has anyone seen this before / know the specifics of why and how it happens? --67.82.60.36 20:06, 6 April 2008 (EDT)

minimum area/magnitude for weapons

is there any way to change the minimum area of 9 and the minimum magnitude of 3 for weapon enchanting? custom items created with the construction set can have an area of effect of 1 ft, which gives much better results on charges. also, doesnt a base 9 foot area of effect run the risk of hitting other people, especially when enchanting a bow?

thanks in advance for any info — Unsigned comment by 70.160.126.217 (talk) on 10 April 2008

as far as I know, the minimum area is 1 or 0 (target only). I think the next step up from that is the 9 you're referring to but I can't remember for certain. Deadlykris 17:17, 10 October 2008 (EDT)
There is no way to change those values unless you edit the interface, which is quite complicated, and only for the PC version. --Timenn < talk > 09:53, 11 October 2008 (EDT)

Chameleon problems

i cant seem to get the spell effect chameleon in the enchanting list how can i get this do you need an item with chameleon already? thnx — Unsigned comment by 84.68.244.32 (talk) on 3 May 2008

You need to be a master in illusion before chameleon appears in the enchanting options. --Volanaro 13:27, 3 May 2008 (EDT)
Umm, actually, no. As with all effects, "The magical effects that you choose to use for enchanting must be from spells that you know and are able to cast." Ways that you can obtain the Chameleon effect are detailed on the Chameleon page. The most straightforward is to purchase the Chameleon spell; to cast that spell you must be at least Journeyman level in Illusion. However, in theory you could even gain access to the Chameleon effect at Novice illusion skill if you obtained it via the Shadow Stone's Fingernail Moon greater power. --NepheleTalk 16:04, 3 May 2008 (EDT)
You don't technically need to have the ability. Just save before you grab a sigil stone and keep grabbing it and reloading until you get the 25% chameleon stone and do the item dupe for 4 of them. Then just enchant 4 pieces of gear and viola 100% chameleon. — Unsigned comment by 67.176.171.28 (talk) on 27 May 2008

Recharging Weapons With Soul Gems

I had a weapon that only needed to be recharged for around 250 points, but doing so still consumed an entire 300 point Soul Gem. Is this supposed to happen? DerSquirrel 22:21, 9 May 2008 (EDT)

Yes. The gems don't contain partial souls so the entire thing is used up when you recharge an item. –RpehTCE 03:22, 12 May 2008 (EDT)

Sigil Stone vs. Soul Gems

I'm just wondering which is more logical to use. From what I've heard its better to use Sigil Stones for armor and soul gems for weapons. Can anyone confirm or give me some advice. Oh yeah, I'm level 20 so the Sigil Stones I get have the highest enchanting power. — Unsigned comment by 89.243.239.195 (talk) on 25 May 2008

As far as I know, in all cases transcendent sigil stones provide more powerful enchantments than grand soul gems, for both armor and weapons. However, one-to-one comparisons aren't necessarily meaningful. Some effects (Spell Absorption, Resist Magic) are only available in Sigil Stones; many effects are only available in soul gems (most of the skills for Fortify Skill, all Drain and Weakness effects, etc.). But even more importantly, you have very little control over sigil stones. Unless you're willing to exploit save games, which sigil stones you receive are completely random. And when using a sigil stone, you are unable to customize the enchantment, which is especially noticeable for weapon enchantments: sigil stone weapons are always single-effect, with no control over duration or magnitude.
So basically, if you happen to receive a sigil stone with an effect you want, you should use the sigil stone. But most of the time, soul gems are going to be a better option because they're always available. --NepheleTalk 22:23, 24 May 2008 (EDT)
One case where I found Sigil Stones to be far superior for weapons is Absorb Magicka. I made a "mana battery" dagger out of a Transcendent Sigil Stone giving me Absorb 50 Magicka per strike. Only a few strikes are needed to replenish my magic supply so I can go back to casting spells. Damage Fatigue is similar though I usually end up killing the enemy before I can knock them out. If you only want a single effect, or if you are looking at raw power or capacity, Sigil Stones are always superior. The reason people claim they aren't "inferior" for worn items is that you can't enchant a worn item with multiple effects anyway, so the drawback of Sigil Stones isn't relevant there. --85.64.35.231 13:37, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

Dremora

i am having trouble soultrapping a dremora kymarcher(spelling?)a message said that their was no soul gem large enough in inventory, and i have azura,s star ang grand soul gems. no black soul gems though; haven,t seen one of these yet. knightelfmohak.68.119.170.18 22:18, 29 June 2008 (EDT)

(Question moved here from inappropriate talk page.)
Dremora are NPCs, so you can only soul trap them using Black Soul Gems. --NepheleTalk 00:52, 30 June 2008 (EDT)

Regenerating

In Morrowind, enchanted items recharge on their own, which I'll refer to as "regenerating" to avoid confusion with other methods of recharging. I don't recall any enchanted weapons regenerating in Oblivion but to be honest, I've never paid close attention. Still, I don't think they do. If someone who knows for sure could post their insights to the page, or point out to me to that it's already listed on the page, I'd appreciate that. Deadlykris 17:27, 10 October 2008 (EDT)

It might not be explicitely stated that it differs from Morrowind in that aspect, but then it doesn't have to. Listing the main differences is currently being done at Oblivion:Oblivion for Morrowind players. --Timenn < talk > 09:56, 11 October 2008 (EDT)
Good enough for me. Thanks. Deadlykris 13:18, 11 October 2008 (EDT)

Increasing Spell Effects

Is it possible to change spell effects that are not normally enchantable on an item in the Construction Set? Like if I wanted to change the effect, "Bound Helmet" in the CS so that I could constant effect enchant it onto my item.

Disappearing Enchanted Items

(moved from the article)
  • Sometimes self enchanted items disappear when the game crashes and is loaded on a quicksave. Strangely, any trace of the items are also removed from previous saves, even if the item is equipped in the picture shown in the save/load picture.
Another one-off problem rather than typical behavior. –RpehTCE 03:58, 31 January 2009 (EST)
(moved from UESPWiki:Reference Desk -- same user, who provided more details but on an inappropriate article)
I put a small note in the enchanting section on this in case anyone else ran into the problem, but I found that when I enchanted my bow and saved with it equipped the arrows I was using would disappear. I figured I would add some details here in case anyone else wants to test it out to see if they get the same results. I'm running version 1.0.228 at the moment. I enchanted (if I remember correctly) an elven bow with a black soul gem damage health 20 points for 1 second. I can't remember if I had the bow equipped at the time but the arrows are basically always equipped, unless I unequip them. I noticed the problem with Vaermina's quest for the Skull of corruption (not long after enchanting the bow). I normally have my sword equipped, but I was making much use of the bow in sneak mode. At one point when I had the bow equipped I saved the game. When I went to reload it, I had no arrows. I tried it again a few times with similar results. I then noticed that if I saved the game with my sword equipped, there were no problems; it only happened with the bow. I finally unequipped and re-equipped the arrows, and haven't had a problem since. I didn't try repeating the process with another bow as I was a little exasperated after that. I haven't played with the patched version yet so I don't know if it's fixed in that or not, but in any case those are the details I recall if anyone wants to look into it.

Enchantment Soul Limit

Hey guys, I need some help. When enchanting a weapon with a Grand Soul, the maximum cost of the spell is 85. That's what it says in the article. BUT, what about the other levels of souls? What is the maximum cost for lower levelled souls? This sort of information should really be in this article in the form of a table. Also, the gold cost of a custom enchantment needs to be included. I think this information is on one of the UESP pages, but it's not in the pages for Soul Gems or Soul Trap or a few other places. I'd like to implement this information into the next release of the Oblivion Spell Assistant, which I'd like to release by this weekend. Ong elvin 07:52, 1 April 2009 (EDT)

Okay, a Google search yielded most of the answers I wanted. The only thing that remains is the gold cost to create the enchanted item. Still, I don't know how to do tables, and can't be stuffed figuring it out, so someone else will want to take up that mantle. :P Ong elvin 08:25, 1 April 2009 (EDT)

Enchanting with the Console

Is it possible to enchant an item with the console on pc?

According to this page, the closest thing is the command 'showenchantment', which brings up the enchantment window (I know nothing about the Console). --Darth NANAME 00:01, 11 June 2009 (EDT)
Darth NANAME is correct; to expand on that, it simply brings up the normal enchanting menu. The console doesn't provide any extra enchanting options or any way to directly enchant an item that the menu doesn't provide, it merely opens the menu. Deadlykris 21:32, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Enchanting Altar Glitch

Every time I try to use an altar of enchantment, the icon the tells me to press the spacebar (indirectly of course, I just mean the icon that means it can be activated with space) disappears very briefly, similar to doors in the test hall that go nowhere. I can still access it from the console command showenchantment, but I want to use my re-enchanting altar.— Unsigned comment by 67.234.122.23 (talk) on 20 June 2009

Effect Limits

I can't find anything that references this happening, but (on the 360) only 7 effects are displayed for enchanted weapons. Testing with an identical weapon missing any extra enchantments, it looks like the ones you can't see are still in effect. Can anyone verify this happening? — Unsigned comment by Unanimouse (talkcontribs) on 12 July 2009

I don't know what your second sentence means. You only get to use enchantments that you can cast as spells. That means if you can only cast seven different effects, you'll only get seven options to enchant. –rpehTCE 04:59, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
The game limits the number of effects that are displayed. Imagine if the screen had 15 effects listed on it. This prevents the screen from filling with a list of effects.

Repair Glitch

It might be useful to note that enchanting an item automatically repairs it to 100 when enchanted. Well, that is for me. Can someone else try it? --Darkheart 18:26, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

I wouldn't call it a glitch really... it's a whole new item. But I've added it to the article, as I think it deserves a mention, so thanks. –rpehTCE 20:33, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
...and now I see it was already on there. How embarrassing. –rpehTCE 20:34, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

sigil stone enchanting.

when i go to the alters to enchant stuff it doesn't have the sigil stones in the soul gems bit. help please!!— Unsigned comment by 90.194.76.20 (talk) on August 14, 2009 at 12:11

You don't need to use an enchanting alter to apply a sigil stone to your equipment.↕Check out this page to learn how to use them. -Dlarsh(Talk,Contribs) 18:30, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Stacking of bonuses on armors

If i enchant gloves with (8% shield) and i also do the same with my boots will i only get 8% when i wear both or do they stack so that i will get 16%? sorry couldnt find it not in the article nor in the comments

thanks for the answers — Unsigned comment by 213.142.169.121 (talk) on 25 August

Check out Shield page: Shield adds directly to the physical Armor Rating of the subject, and is cumulative with worn armor. So basically yes, it does stack. This also goes for any other enchantment with percentages --SerCenKing Talk 14:32, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

Question

Has anyone considered adding a key with an image of the enchanting menu that appears when usig an altar of enchanting that is labelled. I'm sure many would find this useful. — Unsigned comment by 78.150.148.213 (talk) on 15 September 2009

I have no idea what you mean. --Timenn-<talk> 13:15, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
I think the first person meant they way a graphic with the menu that pops up when you activate/use the enchanting alter. Then I think they want a description of what all the icons on the screen mean and each side of the echanting alter menu does. This is fairly easy to figure out on the xbox 360 but might be a hard menu for some of the newer gamers to figure out (i.e. very young players or people that do not remember the DOS/early windows days were nothing was explained). 98.245.205.125 06:49, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

Enchanting items in frostcrag spire

Hi I just started using my alters in the frostcrag spire but i found that even with 100 in both intelligence and willpower I still can't enchant a ring with a fortify skill enchantment....Is this because I need to gain access to the university first or do I need to do more missions?

P.S. I also just started the game and this was my first stop on my adventure— Unsigned comment by 216.121.129.181 (talk) on October 9, 2009

If you're just starting out in the game, you may not have any spells or powers with the fortify skill effect. You need to be able to cast the effect in question before you can use it to enchant. See here for a list of where you can obtain the effect. Dlarsh(Talk,Contribs,E-mail) 21:02, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
Ok so what you're saying is if i don't already have that spell I can't use the enchantment on a ring?— Unsigned comment by 216.121.129.181 (talk) on October 9, 2009
Correct, though the spell can't be purchased. If you receive a spell or power with any variation of fortify skill, it unlocks every variant for enchanting and spellmaking. For instance, if you have the Skeleton Key from Nocturnal's quest, it only boosts your security skill. You'll find, however, that when you check a spellmaking/enchanting alter, you have access to every skill fortification effect. Dlarsh(Talk,Contribs,E-mail) 22:46, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

Enchantable Effects

Could someone make a page that says which spell effects are enchantable, or direct me to such a page? --Helper Unknown 20:35, 12 October 2009 (UTC)

This page lists every effect and has a column showing whether the spell can be used for enchantment or not. You can also find this information listed on the individual effect pages. Dlarsh(Talk,Contribs,E-mail) 20:58, 12 October 2009 (UTC)
I looked on some effect pages, and I cannot find a section of the effect box that says it it is custom enchantable or not, I think you mean the fact that the barter value is 0, but that is not as obvious as I think it should be. --Helper Unknown 12:56, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
You're correct, not all effect pages list the enchanting availability. I was using Bound Armor and Bound Weapon, whish do show that they cannot be used for enchantment in the "Type" box. As for barter value, it simply shows how much the effect will add to the value of an item that is enchanted with it. Every effect has a barter value, even those that can't actually be used (it's simply listed as 0, as are many negative effects that can be used, such as burden).

Skills and Enchantments

So we all know that our skill in a school affects the magicka needed to cast a spell. That insane 400 magicka destruction spell we saw back when we were lvl 5 in it and dreaming turns out to be closer to 200 by the time we have the 100 destruction needed to cast it...

So does this stack over to enchanting? More to the point, does our skill in the schools make a difference at all when deciding the charge costs of an item or it is purely dictated by the enchantment modifier for that spell effect (Ie: independant of the enchanter (us)).

-Trit

No, enchantment use fixed values. So if you manage to get hold of a filled Grand Soul Gem at level 1, you can create the same powerful enchantment as if you were level 20. Spell schools have no influence in this. The only requirement is that you got to have a spell with the same magic effect before being able to use it for enchanting. --Timenn-<talk> 22:14, 9 November 2009 (UTC)
