Console[edit]

Is there a way to adjust encumbrance via the console? — Unsigned comment by 205.250.158.5 (talk) at 20:24 on 4 December 2011

The best way is probably player.setav Strength 300 so you can avoid the bug with Feather, and I don't know of any abilities with feather off the top of my head. For each point of strength you give yourself, maximum encumbrance increases five. Lukish_ Tlk Cnt 05:36, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

Real World analog?[edit]

How much does one Encumbrance Unit weigh in real world units? Roughly speaking I mean. For example, if you take an item in Oblivion and deduce how much it would weigh in the real world then work it out. Which makes me wonder if oblivion item weights are at all consistent or realistic.

This information would be useful so back up statements such as: "I'm carrying a ton of items, literally." --87.113.119.157 23:02, 14 January 2013 (GMT)

I think that one unit of encumbrance is supposed to be roughly a pound weight in real life, but obviously this doesn't stack up. It's not just impossible to make the correct comparison due to an uneven weight scale, (eg, some rings with a weight of 1.0, the same as a slice of Blue Cheese from Border Watch), but also weapons go up by a predetermined set number for better quality (eg Long Swords go up by a factor of 4 between Silver and Daedric) with no thought being given that these better materials might weigh less. Historically, Medieval swords (since we're dealing with a pseudo-Medieval world) ranged from 1.5 pounds to 6 pounds, with most one-handed war swords falling between 2.5 and 3.5. The idea that anyone could wield a 48 pound sword with one hand for more than a few seconds without becoming exhausted is ridiculous. Because of this, I've always pretended that one "feather weight" equals one-tenth a pound; suddenly the weapon weights seem a lot more reasonable. Unfortunately, this doesn't work with encumbrance capacity, because an athletic man with 100 strength would then have a carrying capacity of only 50 pounds. A modern soldier may be required to carry a pack of 40 to 65 pounds (sometimes more) IN ADDITION TO body armour and weapons, depending on the mission, which is why 50 pounds total sounds unacceptably light (but 500 pounds doesn't sound realistic either). It also doesn't work with armour weight, as a full suit of plate armour could realistically weigh 30 to 40 pounds; if feather weights are one-tenth a pound, full Daedric would weigh only 16 pounds (yet if you were wearing 160 pounds of armour, you'd barely be able to move). Yet more evidence that Bethesda weren't really paying attention as they went along. Realistically, weapon weights should be divided by 10, armour weights divided by 2.5, and encumbrance should be divided by 3 to 3.5. Then we could believe that one "feather weight" equals one pound. Time to shop for a rebalancing mod, I think. 12.233.147.42 00:14, 14 January 2014 (GMT)

Encumbrance 173 when carrying only zeros[edit]

My encumbrance is at 173 while only carrying things I cannot drop, such as keys, quest items, and a bound bow I can’t seem to drop. All of these items have an encumbrance of zero. Is there any way to fix this without reverting to a previous save?
