Missing[edit]

I had put off doing the main quest for a while, not advancing beyond arriving at Weynon Priory. I've now started it, except Hirtel isn't appearing. I don't mind Hirtel's absence so much, it's just by not appearing he's depriving me of the "Kvatch" topic for all of the refugees. Anyone know why? If I load one of my earlier saves (90 hours of playtime ago) he appears. Maybe I got too close to Kvatch outside of the main quest or something??? --216.105.89.231 05:06, 28 October 2011 (UTC)

He should be around there somewhere. Once I found him running the oposite way, from Anvil. In my current game though, he was more worried about running away from a chasing wolf, than he was about escaping Kvatch. So instead of initiating his dialogue, he just gave me that silly "Howdy stranger" look while running up and down the hill. Quite amusing actually... 84.48.91.232 19:55, 4 October 2012 (GMT)
He's probably dead. I don't think he ever has Essential status. —Legoless (talk) 20:00, 4 October 2012 (GMT)
I got this same problem after entering Kvatch from the "wrong direction", so that the first person I talked to was the guard captain guy. This updates the quest, Hirtel moves to the Flowing Bowl in Anvil without talking to you, see you next game Kvatch topic. Damn annoying. On the PC, you can add the topic manually with the following console command: addtopic kvatchtopic Weroj (talk) 23:00, 5 June 2013 (GMT)

Regarding his name...[edit]

I'm pretty sure Hirtel is a play on the word "hurtle" meaning "to move rapidly or forcefully in a wild and uncontrolled manner". Given what you see him doing when first meeting him at Kvatch, and his frantic "RUN WHILE YOU CAN" speech, along with him running all the way to Anvil (assuming he makes it there), I'd say the word association is pretty apt.
