Missing Ogres[edit]

I'm level 15 right now, trying to do this quest. I went to Weatherleah, hadn't been there before, got the message on how there are ogres there, looked around, none showed, went to Chorrol, got sent back. I have hung around and roamed the farm for several game hours, and still no sign of any ogres. What is this? — Unsigned comment by Jbfballrb (talkcontribs)

Hi, I have also the same problem with this quest. As soon as I show up at Weatherleah, the Ogres are not there. Even though I tried reloading and resting, even sleeping doesn't help. After searching a wide area, appart from wolves, no Ogres were to be found

I have checked other pages on the net and it seems that there is no fix yet. Lets hope that the next update from Bethesda will include a fix for that quest?

Wenlay - The truth is the way!

Im also having the same problem with the lack of ogres at the red marker! :-( — Unsigned comment by 203.214.2.198 (talk)

This happened to me too. I searched as far as Hackdirt, Brindle Home, Skingrad, and County Anvil. I don't get it. If they get killed by other creatures, will it still count as me killing them? Cause if that's the case, I'll keep playing the game until I come acrosss them or they're killed.

The Ogres have a habit of wandering off. The longer you leave the quest after getting it, the more likely they are to have wandered away from the building. Having mods such as OOO and MMM may exacerbate this problem, as they add behaviours to creatures that makes them find water, hunt deer, etc.
You're all just going to have to keep looking, I'm afraid. --Gaebrial 10:21, 14 September 2007 (EDT)
Even though this discussion is old, I just wanted to add to the story that with FCOM I got some pilgrims of Julianos who went inside weatherleah (the house) and the ogres did follow suit. Then ... they just vanished... I don't know what happened to them but just wanted to say that people should really save before the area loads, or better at chorol, or else for PC users console is the way to go. 83.114.80.164 23:48, 28 June 2008 (EDT)

If you are playing the ps3 or x-box360 version, and you find there are no ogers at weatherleah. Just station a member of the Dark Brotherhood there. Soon enough he or she will kill them. It worked for me it can work for you..

2 Allies that cannot be killed[edit]

I didn't see anyone mentioning this, but these 2 guys never die. They are that type that just fall to the ground and get back up. And! if you never lead them back to their birthplace, they will follow you everywhere, fight with you, LEVEL with you etc. I hooked them up with some fixed-up bound armor, and there has not been a quest or dungeon we did not handily clean out in short order, and i'm just a wood elf thief who never payed enough attention to strength to make a difference. I just toss a few arrows to kick things off.. maybe conjur up something to help these 2 out, and these 2 run off in their deadric armor and weapons and just pummel the heck out of everything. It's almost like haveing 2 permanently conjurred fighters. Reynald is a mage of sorts and casts protect on himself prior to every encounter even. They both will drop degraded weapons and pick up new ones when they need them, so with or without the bound weight 0 items that i pickpocket ONTO their bodies, they always fight with leveled weapons - preference for clubs and longswords i've noticed, and they will always use the MOST powerful weapon in their inventory.

Somewhere I was thinking of compiling a list of invincible NPCs, in particular the ones who will follow you and fight alongside you. Might be considered pretty spoilerish, so it shouldn't be on a general page like Oblivion:People, but still a good idea to have it somewhere. (Some characters also start un-killable and become killable later on, so this would have to be noted.) --TheRealLurlock 14:18, 18 October 2006 (EDT)
I added a few things to this section of the article. A few questions: 1) Is there any way to permanently charm an NPC? This seems like the only way to keep Reynald happy. 2) Does anyone know specifically how their weapons work? Their leveled weapons seem to respawn every now and then (ex. Guilbert suddenly getting his glass warhammer back, instead of the crappy mace he was using), but I couldn't tell why or when. Their broken weapons never go back into their inventory, unless they're glitched bound weapons you placed on them yourself. Seems like Guilbert always picks up Blunt weapons and Reynald usually gets 1-handed Blades, although I've seen him pick up and use a Staff. 3) Anybody have good enchantments to put on Bound Armor/Weapons and give to them? I'm never sure which enchantments NPCs can use. 4) Has anyone tried getting them to use quest items, like 0-weight Umbra (before you talk to Clavicus Vile) or Rockshatter? I would try this, but I don't have the weapons anymore. I've been trying to figure out all the different ways to use the Jemane bros. lately, just because it's so weird to go through Oblivion with a "party" on your side -- even if one of them is an angry drunk who never helps out. I love how Guilbert keeps saying pathetically "...you have but to lead us to Weatherleah...", like he thinks we're on the way there even while we're fighting Daedra in Oblivion. My favorite glitch in the game.
I've been using the Jemane brothers and Martin, Jauffre and Erthor for a while now and from my experience their weapons DO NOT level. At higher levels better weapons start appearing so they pick them up after killing enemies. It's not that their iron weapons just get replaced by daedric ones. Their spells and stats still level though. Also Guilbert has a lower responsibility so if guards are chasing you, he will help you whereas Reynald will side with the law(shouldn't it be the other way round?). This often results in the two brothers fighting each other. Also they pick up all sorts of weapons. I've seen both wield all sorts of blunts, blades, bows and staves. However they don't always drop their weapons if they break so if their encumbrance limit is reached they'll stop picking up weapons and fight bare fisted. The only way to make them pick up weapons again is to pickpocket some items from them. The same applies for all followers. Yielding to Reynald is as easy as yielding to Guilbert, it all depends on how much you pissed him off(disposition). --Sundaroct131088 07:03, 21 September 2007 (EDT)
Their weapons do level up. You have to leave them somewhere, fast travel for a bit, and come back after awhile. This restores their weapons each level up too. --Barfightbob 08:41, 1 February 2008 (EST)

List of followers[edit]

I made a list of them once: ((SPOILERS))

Unkillable:

Reynald & Guilbert Jemane, Martin & Jauffre (until you bring them to Cloud Ruler Temple), Viranus Donton (can't make him wait somewhere though), Erthor (during the Skingrad Recommendation quest, until you drop him off), Maglir (during the Den of Thieves quest in and around Anvil), Modryn Oreyn (during the Azani Blackheart quest, can't make him wait), Lady Rogbut gra-Shurgak (during the Noble's Daughter quest, can't make her wait either)

I can't think of anymore...anyone else know of any? (That can't die.) — Unsigned comment by Barfightbob (talkcontribs)

You might want to check the page Oblivion:Followers --Nephele 13:18, 24 February 2007 (EST)
After a while only Guilbert keeps following me. Reynald will fast travel but will never actually follow me around to fight monsters. Talking to him says he's going to go and celebrate and to speak with Guilbert. Does anyone know of a way to make him start following me again? — Unsigned comment by Andrew (talkcontribs)

Killing The Ogres[edit]

Killing the ogres without first reporting back will break the quest. Guilbert will ask you kill the ogres (which are already dead; thus, you cannot complete the task).

I am 98% certain this isn't correct! I have written a number of walkthroughs about Oblivion and I actually advise people to kill the Ogres before reporting back, to save two trips. I've done this quest many times and never encountered a problem with that method, but I can't edit the front page without discussing it first, so here ya go. If I'm wrong, feel free to correct me. --— Unsigned comment by 83.217.168.185 (talk)

Well, I'm the one that reverted your contribution, since I didn't know your experience level. I've never killed the Ogres first, but I'm usually suspicious about anonymous edits that don't have any explanation attached to them (especially when they delete content). If you aren't running any mods, feel free to delete that passage. Thanks for taking the time to explain that on the Talk Page, and if you've spent a lot of time writing walkthroughs, we'd love to have your help on the UESP more often. --Ratwar 02:12, 25 March 2007 (EDT)

Sabine Laul[edit]

Nothing much but if you go to Sabine Laul and ask her about Weatherleah before asking anyone else about it she will say the same thing other townsfolk say(I've heard of the place but ask Sabine Laul at the Fighters' Guild). Then you'll get the quest update and if you speak to her again she'll tell you where it is. --Sundaroct131088 08:10, 3 September 2007 (EDT)

Yielding to Reynald[edit]

I don't think it gets any harder to yield to Reynald, which is what the article currently says; in my experience you can yield to him as easily as Guilbert. The only time you can't is if another NPC, like a guard, is angry at you, and Reynald sides with them. In that case, if you yield to Reynald, he and the guard will both sheath their weapons for a second, and then pull them out and attack you again. The problem isn't that it's hard to yield to Reynald, it's that his disposition gets low and he stops charging into fights to help you out and starts siding with innocent NPCs against you. This is sort of an assumption on my part, as I'm playing on 360 and don't have console commands to check his disposition, but I'm pretty certain this is why he tends to get less helpful the longer he follows you.

Possible Quest Break[edit]

After reuniting the brothers, I didn't ask Jemane about Weatherleah. Instead I just wondered around town for a bit. Then I accidentally asked about Weatherleah, and it added the quest. I did go to Weatherleah pretty quickly after that, but the Ogres were nowhere to be found. (I forget how fast, but I might have waited a day of in-game time.) Will getting the quest from random townsfolk break this quest? Or is one day long enough to send the Ogres exploring? Ong elvin 20:09, 23 January 2008 (EST)

No, not at all. You just have to talk to the brothers before you go to Weatherleah, regardless of whether or not you heard the rumor first or afterwards. The ogres there only spawn after you reach a certain stage in the quest (I believe it is either after you talk to the brothers or after you find out the location of the farm from a fighters guild member). Only then can you kill them and finish the quest. Simply follow the journal prompts until they specifically tell you to travel to Weatherleah. Vesna 21:37, 23 January 2008 (EST)
Ah, okay, thanks. Looks like I'm completely screwed then. xD Damn Ogres must've gone exploring, and I'm playing Xbox 360. Ong elvin 01:25, 24 January 2008 (EST)

Sabine Stuck?[edit]

(moved from the article)
  • Sometimes, Sabine Laul gets permanently stuck in her house with the door locked. This can be fixed though by breaking into the house.

This to me sounds like a temporary AI glitch, or even a case of just not waiting until the correct time before trying to find Sabine. In either case that would disqualify it from the article. Has anybody else had Sabine get stuck permanently? –RpehTCE 04:29, 8 February 2008 (EST)

Well, first of all, i don't think there is anything like "her house". Whoever wrote that, was probably referring to Fire & Steel. However that house is clearly Rasheda's cause there is only one bed in there and it is Rasheda sleeping on it. I had this bug happening to me - it seems Sabine stucks to Fire & Steel's door cause she won't normally come out but once you break in you never get to see her inside - she immediately goes outside. Also i noticed that unlocking the door through magic isn't enough to make her come out - you have to actually get inside the shop. But the bug is not permanent. After waiting outside the shop for about 12 hours she eventually unstuck. 80.240.17.195 10:53, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

Bug[edit]

The part where it mentions the ogres wondering off needs to be in bugs, not notes. 77BeTa77 11:08, 15 March 2008 (EDT)

Talking to Sabine[edit]

I've moved this here from the article:

Note that you should be sure to talk to Sabine before going to Weatherleah, as the quest will not update until you have talked to her. If you decide to look for Weatherleah on your own and kill the ogres before talking to her, you must come back to Chorrol and talk to her, then return to Weatherleah before the quest will update properly. If the quest does not update upon returning to Weatherleah, wait several hours and it should update.

I can't see any evidence that you need to talk to Sabine. Talking to Sabine updates the quest to stage 18, which in turns add a marker for Weatherleah to your map. But that's all it does. I can't find any other script for this quest that checks to see whether you've completed stage 18 of the quest. There's no need to complete all the stages of a quest to do the quest (there are many other quests with optional, unnecessary, or even completely inaccessible quest stages). The only requirement I can see is that, for killing the ogres to register, you must have completed quest stage 10. But stage 10 is the stage where you talk to Guilbert and Reynald, not the stage where you talk to Sabine. --NepheleTalk 12:58, 1 August 2008 (EDT)

"If you already have discovered the location of Weatherleah, you can skip talking to Sabine Laul and head straight for Weatherleah."
I would not be surprised if the discovery of Weatherly itself caused bugs in this quest, but Sabine certainly does. Had found Weatherleah, reunited the brothers, asked a publican about Weatherly and gotten the quest to find Sabine but she was nowhere to be found. Went to Weatherly, killed the Ogres, and then even the brothers disappeared. Had to advance the quest to stage 20, whereupon stage 40 completed, Sabine reappeared and the brothers reappeared. Anarchangel (talk)

Bug Recommendations[edit]

Moved here from article
  • Note of Caution: If you wish to avoid this bug indefinitely do not approach Weatherleah before you intend to complete this quest; additionally, it may be worth your time to do all the steps of this entire questline UP TO THE POINT OF ESCORTING THE TWINS to the house, this will ensure you kill the ogres but you can still wait to get the leveled rewards as you are not required to bring them home immediately after killing the ogres.

-Two other points to be made: 1. Get past the ogres in this questline as early as possible on any character and 2. Avoid exploring in the vicinity of Weatherleah until you intend to slay the ogres so they will not be able to wander. -Note: If you lose the ogres in the vast expanses of land... there is a VERY good chance you are done with that quest as they can wander as far as they want, and while you are searching for them they can continue to move further away in any direction. The longer you search near them the further they can get... and they can backtrack to attack newly spawned random creatures. -The shield reward is fantastic, make avoiding this glitch a priority.

  • Now, for the bad news:

I gave up searching for the ogres on my power leveled, max stats character after learning that I glitched the ogres during a run-by which was intended to get map markers I could fast travel to (because there are SO many good ones in that area) without knowing this glitch existed, then I continued on my character eventually getting MANY hours of work on the books before realizing I sparked the glitch. -Now for the hope-crusher... I eventually found the ogres... NEAR LEYAWIIN!!! ON ACCIDENT!!! A YEAR AFTER I GAVE UP LOOKING FOR THEM!!!

So basically... 'abandon all hope, ye who lose ogres'

I've moved this here because it's mostly just a repeat of information that is already in the article, padded with first-person experiences and other comments that do not meet the site's style guidelines. Furthermore, I'm not sure the "recommendations" are really appropriate: they seem to be based on a false understanding of when and how the ogres spawn, plus countless players have successfully completed the quest without such extreme precautions. --NepheleTalk 20:20, 11 January 2009 (EST)

Sabine[edit]

I can't find her at all, it shows a green arrow to where she is supposed to be but she isn't there, I've waited an entire day, just left my controller and waited for her to show, never turned red never changed her spot. Then I searched all around Chorrol and she isn't there either. It seriously is driving my crazy.... I just want to finish this quest..— Unsigned comment by 68.229.230.30 (talk) on 8 June 2009

Talking to Sabine is not a requirement for this quest. If you find Weatherleah on your own, the quest will update and you can continue. --Mr. Oblivion(T-C) 04:07, 8 June 2009 (EDT)
(edit conflict) That probably means she has died somehow as she would normally at least move around a bit. You don't actually need to find her though, so it's not a critical problem. Just use our map to find Weatherleah on your own. –RpehTCE 04:07, 8 June 2009 (EDT)
I did find it, but the twins won't come to it... everyone says i have to find her first. (Edit) — Unsigned comment by 68.229.230.30 (talk) on 11 June 2009
Finding the location so it is marked on your map isn't enough. You have to go close enough so you will get a journal update stating you've found Weatherleah. --Timenn < talk > 09:08, 11 June 2009 (EDT)
On my game, i see the quest marker that is supposed to show on Sabine, to actually point on the house of the other smith of the town - Fire and Steel. After breaking in (it was night), i notice that the marker doesn't even point to Rasheda but the door that i just unlocked, so i go outside once again, and now i see the quest marker pointing somewhere near the Great Oak Tree. I follow it and yes it was Sabine now there. 80.240.17.195 10:26, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

Wrong description[edit]

This page states that the subtitles read north of Fort Carmala but that he says south of Fort Carmala. Well, in my game both the subtitles and the spoken dialogue say north. I believe the note is wrong or it has something to do with patches. Wolok gro-Barok 13:43, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

I'll check the spoken line later but my dialogue is definitely "I wish my father had given me a better description of its location, but for some reason all he told me was "South of Chorrol, north of Fort Carmala.""rpehTCE 13:48, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
That is my dialogue too, so I guess the note is wrong. Wolok gro-Barok 14:02, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
The spoken dialogue also says "North of Fort Carmala". I'll add a VN for now. –rpehTCE 19:34, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Missing Brothers![edit]

So I decided to have the brothers follow me around. I thought they would make decent slav... Pals! But I told them to wait somewhere awhile ago and I seem to have forgotten where I told them to wait. I'm on the XBox 360 So I can't use any console commands. Any Ideas? Anyone? August 26, 2009 (Marcus)— Unsigned comment by 76.112.23.143 (talk)

Does the quest marker point to them? If you could somehow get one to point at them then you are fine. If not, there isn't really an easy way to find them that I can think of. –Elliot talk 01:07, 20 September 2009 (UTC)
Hey i have the same problem right now, i could have sworn i left the pair n Bravil but i can't find them anywhere. If you by chance found them by any special means let me know.

i have the same problem, i am on a ps3 and guilbert has just left me his brother is still around and follows me like a good slav...eh pal and since i am a vamp it makes it hard to drink since i can't reallly have him wait for me, i have tried takeing him home, but without both nothing happens, fast travel don't help me getting him back and he has been gone for some time now so i have no idea where he might be, the marker just points at the houseFaustfan 19:52, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

Same problem here. On xbox360. They've been following me around for a while. They are great in dungeons and forts. Anyway, I was up at the shrine of Boethia and accepted the challenge to go and fight the 9 champions in her realm, but they didn't follow me in and when I got back they were gone. Usually when I'd lose them, fast travelling brought them back, now they are gone. The quest marker just points to their farm. Anyone find a solution yet? Kukulkan 23:47, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
Found them! Somehow they ended up back at Frostcrag Spire just inside the entrance, waiting for me. Kukulkan 23:47, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

Im having the same problem but i dont have the Frostcrage Spire on my xbox 360, does any one know were else they maybe??? (Will95808@yahoo.com)

I have missing brothers! After I told them to follow me, I fast traveled to Hackdirt and they were gone! Can't find them anywhere. Not in Chorrol, Hackdirt, or Weatherleah. This is really frustrating.

A Bug[edit]

I went to Weatherleah after the quest, looked for Guilbert and walked out. When I came out, the comp told me I broke a rule of the Mages Guild. Several seconds later, the same thing happened with the Thievs Guild, and my I tems stolen count went up four despite the fact that I did not steal when I exited. What is going on?

PS: No bounty— Unsigned comment by 68.230.5.178 (talk) at 16:18 on 26 September 2009

This sounds like you accidentally hit your horse. It's a well-known bug. Read this for a more thorough explanation. You should probably reload an earlier save. Talk Wolok gro-Barok Contributions 13:55, 2 October 2009 (UTC)

I don't know how, since I used the toggle all map markers cheat to get there.

Moved note[edit]

If the ogres are lost travel somewhere else and return after three or more days. The three ogres will re-spawn. Beware that if you kill two ogres and then leave and come back after a few days, all three of the ogres will re-spawn. When you kill one of them the journal will update but if you bring back the brothers without defeating the other two they will attack and possibly kill the brothers.

These seems somewhat plausible, but I moved it here over a {{VN}} due to the incoherent nature of it. If this is verified, it can be said in fewer words. Thanks for whoever gets this one. –Elliot talk 11:58, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

Sabine Laul murders Rasheda?[edit]

When tasked with finding Sabine to get directions to Weatherleah, the arrow pointed me to Fire and Steel. It was 1:30pm, Middas, and the door was locked. I picked it, and the cell loaded, just in time to see Rasheda fall down, dead. The red arrow then moved to the door back outside. I went outside, and there was Sabine Laul, walking away. She gave me the location without a problem, but I'm reasonably certain that Ms. Laul, the Fighter's Guild Smith had grown tired of the local non-union competition.

Hi! Hey, this happened to me once too, but I didn't beleive my eyes so I dismissed it. But now that you've reported it, maybe there was something to it after all?! Anyway, now that I've taken to making friendly NPCs essential as I encounter them, I've not encountered such instances anymore. Just fights that seem to never end, because no one dies now, unless I want them to. Leo Star Dragon 1 20:59, 6 August 2011 (UTC)

Where is the arrow directing you to go? If all else fails, try loading an earlier save and do it again...usually when people go missing, it's either because they're somewhere you're not expecting (like upstairs when you're looking downstairs) or sometimes they've fallen through the map. Usually re-loading an earlier save will put them in a slightly different location and you may be able to find them. Robin Hoodtalk 00:12, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
Also try using Detect Life, if you have it. They could have glitched into part of the building.--TheAlbinoOrcany_questions? 01:06, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

Moved notes[edit]

  • The hills north of Weatherleah provide a good spot to snipe the ogres with arrows and spells.
  • You can have the brothers follow you indefinitely; just never take them back. They will always fight monsters and hostile NPCs (they never run), and they cannot die, only be knocked unconscious. They claim they can't fight, but they really are pretty decent at it. Guilbert is handy with his warhammer, and Reynald with his shortsword. Their weapons level up with you; they start with Iron, but end up with Daedric by Level 20. The Jemanes come in handy during the Main Quest, Guild Quests, or any other adventure, regardless of your level.
  • By exploiting the permanent Bound Items glitch, it is possible to equip both brothers with better armor and weapons.See Followers for more information on NPCs who can be used as allies.
  • While it is possible to use Persuasion on Guilbert, Reynald's Persuasion menu is not available. This may make it more difficult to yield to Reynald should you accidentally strike him. See Followers for more information on NPCs who can be used as allies.

I've been pruning the notes sections. Feel free to re-add these if you believe they are useful. --AKB Talk 06:36, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Pacifist method[edit]

I'm attempting a pacifist run through Oblivion, and was NOT able to successfully complete this quest without killing anything.

There's no way around it, you just have to kill the ogres. Hackdirt is the nearest location with friendly NPCs (well... friendly-ish), but none of them are essential, so watch out. Alynnidalar (talk) 20:45, 18 September 2017 (UTC)
