Achieving Levels over 100[edit]

If at level 1 you get all your major skills to 100, you can then use a Drain skill by 100 custom spell to achieve +5 training in one of them every time you level. So after 31 levels your skill will reach 255. Supposedly if you level it once more it will drop to 0. Using this method you can reach levels way over 100. I haven't tested this myself, but there are videos on youtube. Anyone tested this yet? And also I'm guessing the best major skill to do this with is sneak or conjuration considering how ridiculously easily they can be levelled. — Unsigned comment by 206.248.135.66 (talk) on 12 August 2010

Most skills have no benefit after 100. Kaisar Dragon 17:51, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

Glitch with max attributes message[edit]

Once you've maxed all your attributes and then try to raise your major skills (enough to warrant another level-up), normally you'd go to bed and get the message "Perfection cannot be improved upon" once you wake up. However, early on in the game, I went into oblivion.ini and enabled "bInstantLevelUp=1" so I wouldn't have to sleep every time I want to go up in level. The trouble with this is when I reached max level and leveled up my major skills, the game would recognize I need to level up and pop up with the message. However, the message box would never go away, popping back up every time I press "OK" and basically freezing the game. Changing the variable to 0 fixed the issue, but I just thought I'd give a heads up. — Unsigned comment by 206.248.135.66 (talk) at 21:59 on 12 August 2010

Max Level[edit]

(moved from the article) I'm a level 49 with all of my main skills mastered, but my progression bar is a quarter the way full, is the only way for me to level up to go to jail, lose points, then gain them back?76.104.9.23 12:47, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Yes. rpeh •TCE 12:48, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Highest Level[edit]

What is the highest level you can reach without using the jail trick? - — Unsigned comment by 76.104.9.23 (talk) at 12:55 on 22 August 2010

A certain bug apparently allows you to level any time you please, presumably until the point where you can no longer increase your attributes. There are also ways to force your skills above their caps, hence allowing more levels without outright exploiting. - Bomb Bloke 03:16, 3 October 2010 (UTC)

The highest level attainable under normal circumstances (meaning using no forced increases or jail time) is 50. confirmation to come shortly; i'm in the process of leveling. Arcanus Redwolf 17:37, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

It is accutaly possible to go over 50, look at this character. --Archain 17:54, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

How about mentioning mods that change the levelling system?[edit]

Just thought I'd mention that there are some mods out there that alter the levelling system to give you a fixed attribute increase rather than basing it on the use of skills associated with that attribute, so you don't have to play mathematically and grind many countless hours away trying to evenly balance your character. See for example: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=29675.

I really don't understand the current system - it's frustrating to think you can end up with a weak character if you don't pay close attention to which skills you're using, how many times they are increasing in a level, and all that. I'm sure I'm not alone in this. — Unsigned comment by 86.210.212.4 (talk) at 21:43 on 3 September 2010

Losing skill raise bonuses?![edit]

I'm playing a low level game and maxed out all my Int related skill. All my Intelligence related skills are Minor skills. I just tried to do a level up so I can get the Azura and... I'm only at +1 for Intelligence?! — Unsigned comment by ZirePhoenix (talkcontribs) at 23:32 on 2 October 2010

As soon as you qualify to go up (and are notified that you should sleep), you stop gaining attribute bonuses for that level and start gaining them for the next. - Bomb Bloke 03:16, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
I've just encountered this while leveling a minor skill and not getting the attribute bonus for it. If this is accurate, can we get this added to the main page? - Brightlancer 17:16, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
It is already there, in the second bullet-point under Details. --Brf 17:20, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. I swear I read the page a few times to verify it; I must have misread it. - Brightlancer 16:42, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

Max level[edit]

In the article it says "If all your attributes are maxed, you are unable to level." Does this mean that if I max out my attributes before I max out all of my major skills, that I will be unable to gain levels even if I have plenty of major skill gains left? — Unsigned comment by 98.226.186.30 (talk) on 6 February 2011

Yes. It's difficult to do, though, since you have to level luck 50 times. That should be enough on its own for many players. rpeh •TCE 18:17, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
Kinda wish I hadn't taken The Thief Birthsign and the +5 luck when I custom built my char now. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to try to time it right using other attributes. — Unsigned comment by 98.226.186.30 (talk) at 13:45 on February 6, 2011

Gaining levels after maxed out major skills[edit]

So I read on the main page that there a few ways to do this, for example: where something will lower your major skill and you can raise them back up, thereby increasing your level. Would using drain skill work? So if everything was at 100 already, and I used drain blade by 100 (a major skill), could I raise it either by going to a trainer or slowly working it up again naturally? dtm 02:13, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

Yes, but other than Athletics and Acrobatics, increasing skills past 100 harness no bonuses. --Manic 15:12, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

Are you sure? I read that draining skills would increase it as well as fortifying would. Which is, not at all. Guess I'll have to test it. What's the worst that could happen? 99.52.200.110 22:28, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

TLDR[edit]

(moved from the talk page) Beginning at level 1, each race has 480 Attribute points left to gain to maximize all attributes to 100. However, birth signs and preferred attribute bonuses slightly change this. Ignoring the luck attribute and possible birth signs, there are 420 attribute points to be increased. With perfectly efficient leveling, all attributes except luck can be maxed to 100 points at level 27, or 26 level-ups with perfect 5/5/5 (+15) attribute increases. But birth signs and preferred attributes slightly change this formula. Each class comes with two preferred attributes that each get + 5 points, adding 10 points at level 1, leaving 410 points to be gained (ignoring luck). However, with a birth sign that increases attributes like 'The Thief' ( + 10 to AGI, SPD, and LUC respectively), 'The Warrior' ( + 10 to both STR and END), 'The Steed' ( + 20 SPD), and 'The Lady' ( + 10 to both END and PER), you get an additional 20-30 point bonus at the start, and you could max your attributes one level earlier than 27. Overall, if you level efficiently and plan everything out with your character, you could potentially max everything but luck very quickly, in 30-40 hours or so of playing time. Chances are you might mess up a few level-ups though, so it is to be expected that you'll most likely maximize your attributes at levels 30-35.

This seems to be restating most of what the article already says, but it's so confusing that I'm not quite sure. If anybody thinks it's worth saving, please rewrite it before re-adding. rpeh •TCE 08:39, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

Easy Leveling past 100 (early jailing)[edit]

1) The first step is to pick certain skills that will be easy to increase at low levels, In this case I picked: hand to hand, athletics, Blade, Blunt, and Block, The other 2 I couldn't decide on so I picked destruction and acrobatics.

2) The next step is to go to the prison and go to jail, a lot. What I did is I went to the Prison area and killed a gaurd using serpants touch (A birthsign spell). then you will have a bounty of 1000 gold. now the gaurds will come to arrest you, pick the go to jail option. After doing this a couple times your main skills should be at 1, or close to it.

3) After most of your main skills are at 1, you should notice it is extremely easy to level your skills up.

ex.: athletics at lvl 1 levels up after about 5 steps.

continue to level your main skills as you please, but don't sleep unless you are sent to jail.

4) After you level up your main skills to about lvl 10, derank them again by going to jail repeatedly.

5) then just repeat step 3 and 4, until you feel satisfied.

To see what level you should be go to the Info pane with all of your leveling information. find the row called skill increases, take this number and divide it by 10 and that should tell you your main level after you sleep that many times. (assuming you only leveled up your main skills)

Hope this helps some people (Person 14:31, 29 May 2011 (UTC))

Leveling Problems?[edit]

I've just started playing Oblivion after a while, and since I'm quite meticulous in approaching level-ups have only been leveling some time ago after hours of gameplay, and I realized that my leveling multiplier seems a bit messed up, details are:

1. I raised athletics because walking around is way too slow, and I don't have access to horses yet because (and horses obviously can't enter indoor cells), raised it by 3 levels

2. Claimed frostcrag spire, raised mysticism by 40 levels (10-50), because a mod requires me to be journeyman to access the skills it gives

3. Before frostcrag mercantile gets raised because of transactions (OOO takes transaction size into account so it can't be helped), post-frostcrag I leveled it further (10-20)

4. Up until this point I haven't raised a single major skill, then I crafted a Conjuration training spell (summon scamp 1 second) and trained Conjuration (40-50), level-up imminent

5. Slept, the modifier goes as follows :

Strength +1
Intelligence +5
Willpower +1
Agility +1
Speed +2
Endurance +1
Personality +1
Luck +1

This happened more than once with different characters, forcing me to remake the character from scratch, can anyone tell me what happened? I suspect it's OOO version 1.33 tampering with the skill leveling (it says it slows down skill leveling, I'm beginning to think it actually meant the multiplier), but I need confirmations, thanks in advance 110.136.163.199 06:26, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

I changed the layout here if you don't mind. Um anyway, I just wanted to point out OOO does not affect the multipliers, just skill progressing (there are esps you can use to customize this, as they are attached). I don't get how your personality multiplier is still at 1, as the only way I see that possible is that you were due to level up BEFORE you raised mercantile, but you stated that isn't the case. Maybe someone else knows, but I think this is some sort of glitch ~ Dwarfmp 06:37, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for changing the layout, I also thought it was awkward, anyway, I just read up and it seems like it wasn't just me having this problem, perhaps a problem somehow related with the type of game? I said OOO because in my previous install on a laptop (now busted) I didn't encounter such problem, and that time I didn't have any sort of overhaul mod installed, and I think that my mod list is pretty much the same except for the unofficial patches and OOO (well some other mods as well), those mods would be :

Maybe some of those mods? And I'm also installing GotY edition, maybe that can cause problem? (last time I installed it separately (non-GotY), this time I borrowed from a friend, he doesn't seem to have any problems with it though)110.136.163.199 08:17, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
Um I wouldn't be able to say if any of these affect multipliers. You could, however, just add the right amount of attribute points through the console, that would sort of fix the problem ~ Dwarfmp 08:40, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
I see, thanks anyways, I decided to just go further and got myself OblivionXP, returning to the proven xp based leveling, if there is any further information though kindly share with me, it still bugs me how the multiplier got messed up so suddenly110.136.163.199 13:19, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

Leveling up with 2 attributes left?[edit]

Will my charachter be able to level up with only two attributes left that are not maximized? (for example only Luck and Personality are not 100, will i be able to level up then?) Magicovento 23:59, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

I would very much like this answered as well as I have maximized most of my attributes, I have only agility, personality and luck left and with roughly five levels to go before level 50. I too would like to know if I maximize one of my three remaining attributes, will I still be able to level up properly? In morrowind (for my game at least) you could not level properly if only two attributes remained because you had to choose three attributes to put points in, the result is that you sleep and get the level up screen but you can't exit it because you need to spend the points. I hope this is answered as I will not level until I know I won't get stuck. 217.137.157.197 18:03, 18 November 2012 (GMT)
I believe it is answered here, in the archive. As far as I can see reading the page and the discussions, you will be able to level until all your attributes are at 100. It seems that you will not be taken to the leveling screen either when leveling becomes impossible. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 18:14, 18 November 2012 (GMT)
Thank you, I will still save before future leveling just in case, I got stuck in morrowind once because I only had two/one attributes left to maximize and it would not let me leave the level up screen until I had spent all three points and I couldn't due to having less than three attributes. 217.137.157.197 18:31, 18 November 2012 (GMT)

stopped leveling[edit]

Im not sure what is going on really...but I stopped leveling up at 25, can anyone tell me whats going on? Kind of a first timer. — Unsigned comment by 24.111.198.98 (talk) at 14:25 on November 27, 2011

The only reasons for not being able to level are not having enough Major Skills to raise, or not having 3 Attributes that can be increased. In any other case, a Major Skills increasing should increase the bar to the next level. --DKong27 Tk Ctr Em 23:19, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

Does Leveling Work As Article Describes?[edit]

After reading this article, I started keeping track of my skills right at the start of level 4. I didn't do a great job of just increasing a few things, so I ended up doing this (major skills in bold): blade+3, alchemy+1, alteration+9, conjuration+10, destruction+3, armorer+3, athletics+3, block+2, hand-to-hand+2, restoration+2, acrobatics+3, light-armor+5, mercantile+3, speech+1. Everything else: no gain.

That's a total of +26 on my major skills. And looking closely, I had +11 in intelligence skills, +14 in willpower skills. I should have been awarded +5 for each of those attributes. But, what I keep getting is +2 for intelligence, and +3 for willpower. I just keep standing there summoning skeletons (conjuration) and casting protect (alteration) and gaining points, but when I level, the attribute gains are always as described. The only thing I get a +5 in is speed, which makes sense (my total speed skill gain was 3+3+6=11).

Does that make any sense to anyone? Getting discouraged. :( — Unsigned comment by 50.29.171.177 (talk) at 04:58 on 17 January 2012

To get the bonus you have to increase minor skills, if you increase ten major skills, even if you dont level up immediatley, it starts doing the multiplier for the next level, so if you increased your conjuration 10 times at level one, thus giving you enough skill levleing to reach level 2, and then increased your light armor 5 times after doing the conjuration, when leveling to level 2 you would have a +5 to your intelligence, but the speed bonus from the light armor would be held until you reach level 3. (Eddie The Head 05:07, 17 January 2012 (UTC))
It sounds like the article needs to clarify. "When you level you get to raise the values of three attributes. The amount you can raise an attribute by depends on how many skill points you have gained in skills governed by this attribute (major and minor)." I took this to mean that it bases the attribute bonuses on your skill improvements at the time you numerically increase from level n to level n+1, which only happens when you sleep. What you are saying is that it bases the bonus points on the skill gains at the time you QUALIFY for the next level, NOT when you actually increase the level. If that is correct, let me know, and I can add clarification. 50.29.171.177 05:24, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
That is correct, and the article already says as much in the 'Details' Section: "Your attribute bonuses are set when you gain your 10th major skill point. Training skills after that, but before you sleep/level-up, starts the process of accruing skills towards attribute bonuses for the next level-up. It is possible to sleep several times in succession with multiple level-ups." --Gaebrial 13:25, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

Leveling question[edit]

Im new in Oblivion ( 2 days ago i start it) and i read everything that has to do with Oblivion so i totaly understand what i gotta do to play a good game and what i gotta do to do efficient leveling and generally speaking i get whats this game is all about.

So from here ill tell you how i was thinking to make all my attributes level 100 and ALSO make my char level 51 and NOT level 30 (soz for my bad english).

{{{ I chose as my class the "Redguard" and chose as Birthsign "The Thief" and as favorite atribute "Luck" (+"Endurance") and so i get extra +15 Luck attribute and i have total 50+15=65 Luck attribute. I was planing to level up efficiently and with each level that my character get i was planing to increase three attributes by +5 and all the others by +1(not Luck attribute). When ill be level 16 i was planing to start increasing my Luck attribute by +1 and some other two attributes by +5. I was thinking to start level up Luck from level 16 because my Luck attribute is already level 65 and i need 35 more levels to make it level 100 and if i start increasing it by +1 for each level that my character get then Luck will be level 100 when my char will be lvl 51. The reason i start to level up Luck attribute from level 16 is because i want to have all attributes level 100 and also i want my player to be level 51. If i want I can have all atributes level 100 and my char be level 30 BUT i dont want my char to be level 30. I want to reach the maximum level of the character which is level 51 (and sometimes level 51-54). }}}

So that was my thoughts and here there is something that is bothering me:S

1)When my character will be level 30 (or 30-35 if i dont get 100% efficient leveling),all my atributes will be level 100 and Luck will be level 79(79-84 depending on my character level) ... when that happen can i level up with only 1 attribute left? What i mean is if i can continue to level up even though only Luck attribute left to make level 100.

2)Lets say that my character is level 29 and on that level i have Personality attribute 98 and NOT 100. When its time for my character to be level 30 then Personality will get +5 or +2 ? What i mean is that even if i deserve to get +5,because i get 10 skill points on some of the three skills of Personality,it will only take the "+2" out of "+5" or it will take "+5" making personality 103?

I made those 2 questions cause i havent play yet and so i dont know:S

Thank you for your time and really sorry for that big post.

P.S I know that i must not make all my major skills level 100 in order to continue leveling and be level 51 and with efficient leveling i can do that and in case i make all major skills level 100 and cant level up i can go jail and do some others things to be able to level up again.Thanman02 07:38, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

It's been a while since I've played with the default levelling system, but here's what I remember:
1) Yes, you can.
2) I don't remember what it'll show, but you'll only be allowed to raise it to 100. Robin Hoodtalk 07:18, 19 February 2012 (UTC)

change birthsign[edit]

you can use this showbirthsignmenu console command be something like the thief then when the soul gems and such role in switch to atronach get a restore magicka spell mod for this also there is a go beyond a 100 attribute mod or other mods that slow down atrtribute growth if you follow the thief you could max out at 32 Mrp8196 02:20, 24 June 2012 (UTC)

When do you reach your max level?[edit]

I've played through Oblivion dozens of times, but this is my first attempt at "Efficient Leveling." My question is when can you no longer level? I used the Oblivion Character Planner and all my attributes except Personality and Luck will be maxed by level 34. But to max those two will take me to level 51. So once six of the eight attributes are maxed, can I continue leveling? — Unsigned comment by 66.41.53.225 (talk) at 18:42 on 30 June 2012

A question similar to this is somewhere above on this page and I too would like it answered, in Morrowind you could only level properly if you had three attributes to put points in, any less and you would be stuck in the level up screen. 217.137.157.197 18:06, 18 November 2012 (GMT)
Yes, I just ran through creating an "optimal" character and you are still able to level up with only two attributes or even one attribute remaining to increase. However, (and this is what makes me mad), once all your attributes are maxed at 100 you can no longer sleep to increase your level. This means you need to mathematically determine the exact maximum level you can attain with your character (around 53) in order to reach 100 in an attribute at that point in time in order to be able to maximize your hit points. Frustrating since I'm now stuck unable to level at 47. — Unsigned comment by 173.65.30.27 (talk) at 08:28 on 3 January 2013

Fast Leveling[edit]

Does anyone know how to level fast so you can get good armor and items early? I'm looking for a glitch or something to get mithril or elven armor early, because bandits only have terrible fur armor. Anything??? — Unsigned comment by 124.179.246.186 (talk) at 10:04 on 10 September 2012

If you look at the various skill pages, several of them mention ways of training the skills quickly. Alternately, you can raise them via the console if you're on a PC. Generally, though, this isn't a good idea, since the various creatures will level up with you, and if you're still wearing low-level armour, they'll kill you quite easily, so you'll have a hard time getting the high-level armour you want. Robin Hoodtalk 17:42, 10 September 2012 (EDT)
Along the Fighter's Guild path there is a quest where you get Elven armour very early. I got it at level 6. And your companion does the fighting. I thought getting this good armour at level 6 was disgusting. I used it though. Another way is to get to the University fast and enchant your armour with a lot of Shield. Closing the Gates gives you Sigil Stones which could help. Close several and your enchanted chainmail will be good. You can even enchant regular clothes. --93.73.19.163 12:04, 17 September 2012 (GMT)

Consider it additional challenge[edit]

This is like difficulty settings. You advise to construct a character that is easy to develop, but why? No fun. You say that Fighter character is difficult. OK, that's the next one I will be playing. I created a male Orc, The Warrior, Warrior and did some calculations. This character will be free of limitations at the level 32 (far more than anything I did before). For this he has to raise Blunt, Armourer, Heavy Armour, Block and Athletics to 100. Additionally two more +5 raises are required to make Strength 100.

Female Dunmer, The Serpent, Acrobat does nicely despite having all Stealth attributes as majors. The levels split into fighting levels and sneaking levels. Intelligence and Willpower are free from limitations. You can easily get +5/+5/+5. Agility develops slowly but you don't have to have that much agility anyway. So, not all standard classes are designed for maximum difficulty. --93.73.19.163 12:19, 17 September 2012 (GMT)

This sort of discussion is probably better off being brought up in our forums. Robin Hoodtalk 20:01, 17 September 2012 (GMT)

Missing Multipliers - Really![edit]

I already know that points gained in a skill after gaining one's tenth major skill point only apply to the next level up after the one for which one most recently gained the tenth skill point. I am, however, experiencing what appears to be a glitch in the leveling system.
I have been playing on the PlayStation 3.
I started with a basic version of the game, and fairly recently switched to using a GotY edition disc, loading my old save game.
My character is moving from level 46 to 47.
My save game has almost 400 hours on it.
When I first mastered all of my major skills, I was at level 46. Then, I planned to only ever gain one more level for this character, and I planned to gain it by losing major skill points in prison. Therefore, I saw no need to avoid over-leveling my minor skills. Over many, many hours, I gained hundreds of skill points to my various minor skills, including:
Alchemy 44 + 56 = 100
Conjuration 44 + 40 = 84
Mysticism 43 + 41 = 84
Total Intelligence skill boosts: 56 + 40 + 41 = 137

Selected Attributes:
Intelligence: 94
Willpower: 98
Agility: 97
Speed: 97
Personality: 92

When I rest, I am offered full multipliers, as expected, to Willpower (+2), to Agility and Speed (+3), and to Personality (+5).
However, the issue is that I am offered no boost to Intelligence, being only able to increase it by one point with this level.
At first, I thought that it might have had something to do with the fact that, when I first rested to reach level 47, I had had Porphyric Hemophilia for several days, so instead of leveling up when I first rested, I became a vampire, and I leveled up when I rested again.
Testing:
I have reloaded a save file from shortly before I earned the final skill point (in Heavy Armor) to earn the level up to test these issues. I tried leveling up my Conjuration to get an Intelligence bonus, then Heavy Armor to earn the level, then resting to become a vampire, then resting to level up, and I had the same issue.
I reloaded again, and I tried resting to become a vampire first, then leveling up Conjuration to gain the Intelligence bonus, then leveling up Heavy Armor to earn the level up, and resting to level up, and I still see no bonus to Intelligence.
I do not understand what the issue could be, but I have some vague guesses:
1. Signed Byte Overflow?
Intelligence was the attribute governing the set of skills in which I gained the most bonuses while leveling from 46 to 47, 137 points. I only gained 112 points to skills governed by Willpower, and I only gained 125 points to skills governed by Agility. If, for some bizarre reason, the code stores the count of these points in a signed byte integer, then increasing beyond 127 could have unintended effects, reducing the count to a negative number, -119 in the case of my Intelligence. Signed bytes are unusual, but I can imagine the developers using them here for two reasons:
1. Byte integers use less memory, and the game is pretty packed as it is, so any memory savings would be valuable. Furthermore, they might not have expected anyone to gain more than 127 points in skills governed by a single attribute over only a single level.
2. They may have chosen a signed integer to allow the count to drift negative so that, if someone loses skill points in the set of skills governed by a particular attribute, the count does not go from 0 to 255, improperly giving the player a full +5 multiplier.

2. A glitch introduced by using the GotY edition disc to load a game saved by the original disc version?
I do not think this makes much sense, however, because it only seems to have affected my Intelligence, not my Agility, and because I have leveled up both Intelligence and Agility both before and after switching to the GotY version of the game.
If you have any other guesses of what the cause could be, ideas on the subject, personal related experiences to tell, or especially suggestions of how to test or resolve the issue, please let me know!

Minimum level necessary to unlock everything?[edit]

What is the minimum level at which all the content is available? I am not much into maxing stats, especially in a game where the enemies grow in power proportionally, but I do want to collect the best items. Daedric quests require up to level 20 and so does the best armor. Is there anything which requires a higher level? Bulvik (talk) 08:06, 7 December 2013 (GMT)

Off-hand, I know Lich of Lost Boy Cavern requires you to be level 23, and of course, all the Master Training quests require a skill of 70 in their respective skills, which will take a fair bit of leveling to get all of. It's been a long time since I've played Oblivion, though, so I could easily be forgetting something. Robin Hood  (talk) 20:41, 7 December 2013 (GMT)
Most quest rewards and artifacts are topped out at level 25. There are a few that top out at 30 though, so a level of 30+ would guarantee all the best rewards. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 21:01, 7 December 2013 (GMT)
Thank you. I think it should be put on the page, seems like quite basic information to me. Bulvik (talk) 08:59, 8 December 2013 (GMT)

Leveling Confusion...[edit]

I am a little confused as I recently leveled up to level 5 as I wanted to access different deadric quests. After doing so I checked my stats page and saw that I was again close to a level up (immediately after leveling up). I went to Baurus in cloud ruler temple to get some skill ups and after going to sleep again to level up I had more +2's that the 3 I should have gotten from Baurus. Is that supposed to happen? — Unsigned comment by 24.21.234.142 (talk) at 02:54 on 20 December 2013‎

Complete excel file for efficient leveling progress[edit]

Hi, finally I managed to reorder my excel file for efficient leveling. It has all the exact formulas and automatically calculates everything you need. To make it work, you must fill in the starting points & the points you intend to gain per level. Where can I uploaded so that it can be linked in the wiki ? Thanks. You probably suffered some curse that drained the skill, you need to recover it using potions.190.148.51.54 13:53, 1 November 2014 (GMT)

Inefficient leveling?[edit]

Everyone talks about efficient leveling, but are there any advocates of inefficient leveling? Is there some unmentioned advantage to this approach? I mean, just play and enjoy the game, be a warrior if you are a warrior, be a mage if you are a mage, etc. and gain about +3 or +2 on attributes, occasionally a +4 per level? Isn't this perhaps as the designers intended, and efficient leveling is an artificial exploit? I have played before using EL, but coming back to the game after some time not playing, I wish I could just jump into it, choose a class (instead of custom) and play away instead of relearning EL. Is the game really so terribly unplayable unless you gain +5/+5/+5 every level? Note: I only play on normal difficulty level. Caralampio (talk) 13:56, 1 November 2014 (GMT)

All the time I've been playing Oblivion, I've never "leveled efficiently". The game is in no way "unplayable" if you do so. This page simply provides a guide on how to get the best out of every level up, but if you (like me) think it more fun just to play and see what happens rather than thinking ten steps ahead before doing anything, it is no unsolvable trial - you just won't have the "best character possible" at the end. -- SarthesArai Talk 14:07, 1 November 2014 (GMT)

The Level cap in Oblivion (without cheats/glitches) is 57[edit]

If you are trying to reach the maximum level without using cheats, level 57 is the highest possible level. If all of a player's starting major skills are at the minimum, which is 25 (which will be true if none of the major skills selected receive any racial bonuses and no class specialization bonuses) and Mercantile is a major skill, along with 3 of the skills listed in one of the three options given by the oghma infinium, then level 57 is attainable. For example, if all major skill are at 25 than that allows a player to have 525 major skill increases, or 52 and a half level ups, plus the level that you start at meaning you would reach level 53.5 (the 0.5 representing the 5 increases counting towards the next increase). However the quest A Shadow over Hackdirt rewards you with a +5 increase to Mercantile even if it's already at 100, thus giving you and extra 5 increases by bringing it to 105 and leveling your character up to 54. If any of your other major skills consist of one or more of these combinations of three skills: Blade, Blunt, Heavy Armor OR Sneak, Security Light Armor OR Destruction, Conjuration, Restoration than you can use the Oghma Infinium to boost those three of your skills up to 110, giving you 30 more increases to major skills which results in 3 more level ups, thus leveling your character from 54 to 57. — Unsigned comment by Cuesta (talkcontribs) at 23:52 on 27 May 2017

Actually, the maximum level without any cheating or exploits is 247, as a female Orc with Shivering Isles available. It is 207 without SI and 204 as any other combination of race and gender (244 with SI in this case). This is because maximum level has absolutely nothing to do with skill levels, and is obtained via inefficient leveling (1/1/1). I'm not sure why you are posting this here as the page makes no mention of the actual maximum level, only notes on how to level, unless you are wanting that information added but you make no mention of your intent for posting. The information about maximum level is on the Character Creation page, and more detailed explanation and working out can be found on its talk page.
