Slop Drudge[edit]

Is there any way to stop being called slop drudge, like to quit the job? I am SICK of it! I will reload a save if necessary. The Champion of Cyrodiil should NOT be called a slop drudge. --Kantor 06:42, 26 January 2008 (EST)

It seems you are fired when Amusei escapes :D Kantor 07:33, 26 January 2008 (EST)

Article Cleanup 7 Feb 2007[edit]

Completed a cleanup of the entire article, templated and rewrote a number of portions, added tips etc.

I haven't been able to confirm that the guard in the dungeon can be successfully pickpocketed - anyone successful? --MacFodder 21:42, 6 February 2007 (EST)

bug[edit]

In my copy of the game the escort portion of this quest is bugged - leading Amusei through any load door will cause him to vanish, thus breaking the quest. GG beta testing :( --Halo112358 03:08, 17 April 2006 (EDT)

bug[edit]

"Leave the castle grounds via the main gate and cross the bridge leading back to the path to Skingrad. The guard that is normally present at the archway to the bridge should be absent. Make sure you follow the actual path down the hillside towards town - don't shortcut down the hillside to the left as the quest flag may not update"

This surely didn't happend to me. The guard was right there. Getting out of the castle via the archway, even when the guard was backsided to me (with player on sneak mode), would raise my bounty to 500, and then stupid amuzei would start running and wouldn't talk to me no more. I had to jump off through the hillside, then go away from the city. When i could fast travel, i did so to s'krigga so i could pay my bounty. Later i returnd to skingrad and met amuzei.

He was there for me too and yelled "escaping prisoners!" but didnt arrest me.

bug[edit]

If you just gave the count the vampire cure, and have not waited more than one day to collect your reward, once you reach the wine cellar he will find you to tell you to go away and proceed to attack you. --Soapy5 2:47, 18 March 2007 (EDT)

bug[edit]

I took the "Trojan Thief" approach, as I usually do, but this time I noticed something out of place - when I talked to a guard after using the console to erase my bounty, the topic "I am trespassing?" was available to me as if I'd accepted the slop job. I wasn't even in the castle. 208.102.95.117 03:02, 8 August 2012 (UTC)Golga

Two alternative aproaches to 3.[edit]

If this is considered helpfull, someone with a better english than mine might be so nice to move the usefull parts to the main article.

Early in game, when i was sightseeing around, i visited Skingrad. After i left town i walked through the narrow pass below the pridge to the castle. There i discovered two guards and an orl lying dead around, obviously they had fallen off the bridge (due to a bad path finding algorithem i suppose now). When i later was told that i had to ask a certain ork for a job and i coulden't discover that orc and the "green arrow" on my compas led me to exacly that place where i previously discovered the three dead, i had to find an alternative to solve that quest. I tried two approaces, the first failing for lack of security skill:

For thieves able to pick a lock of level "hard" on first (and only, thats why i failed) try:[edit]

Deposit your possessions somwhere save, but keep one lockpick. Enter the castele and steal something in front of the guards, without sneaking. On the Guards dialogue then select "Go to Jail". You will end up in the same cell as the mentioned prisoner, talk to him, then pick the cell door's lock and proceed as mentioned. Be quick, as the guards patrol the cells periodicaly.

For mages able to cast "Open Hard Lock" or similar:[edit]

After my failing as thief i let my character learn the "Open Hard Lock" spell. Besides now you can proceed similar to above, there is an easier way for a mage. Enter the Dungeons from the battlement on the wall right to the catle's hall entrance, avoiding the guard barracs. Go to the cell's anteroom, ignore the guard behind the desk as it will ignore you also (when you do only what i write here, don't try to pick the doors lock), cast the spell on the door, enter the cell area, proceed with 4. The guards didn't even patrol the cells at that aproach.

--The Nerevarine 19:14, 17 April 2006 (EDT)

I just thought I should mention that if you get the quest and then directly go through the dining room into the wine cellar and kill the pale lady you can complete the quest without talking to Larthjar or the orc. I only mention this because the article seems to say that if Larthjar or the orc die your game is done.

Sic tag on blood price journal stage 60[edit]

I accidentally the whole thing. Is this okay?

No, really. Sic tag if necessary, correction if not. 32.157.58.156 03:28, 6 October 2008 (EDT)

Sorry... what do you mean? –RpehTCE 04:03, 6 October 2008 (EDT)

Jail[edit]

(moved from the article)

  • If you forgot to store your stuff before you started the quest, you can talk to a guard and go to jail again. Spend you time in jail and you have all of your stuff back in your inventory. After that you will have to take the book again and give it to the guild again. If you already finished the quest the fine might still be on you. If it is you can go back to jail and get your stuff again.

Moved because I have no idea what it's on about. This quest doesn't involve going to jail. –RpehTCE 00:41, 5 December 2008 (EST)

Jail is one of the options to get into the dungeons. Going to jail, escaping, and continuing with the quest would result in one losing all one's items. He's right, one could get arrested again. One could also steal one's things back from the evidence chest, is it? Seems like an unlikely circumstance, but definitely a possibility. Stevepoppers 18:47, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

I had a problem stealing sverything from the evidence chest; all my items were marked as stolen. It might be wise to create a fresh save before this quest if you don't intend on getting arrested to get your items back after getting in jail (if trojan thief). –Djoo 15:48, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

Jeez another bug I think...[edit]

Hello, when I was doing this quest I got myself thrown in jail so I can talk to the Lathargic guy. But I can't seem to find a way to sneak out without the guard noticing. I tried killing the guard and running to Skrivva to pay the blood price, but the stupid cat won't let me talk to her until I learn where Theran is. Armand doesn't give me an option to pay the blood price, just bounties. So knowing this I just ran out of the prison, but THEN the stupid game glitched out, always saying that there are enemies nearby, meaning that I can't fast travel or wait. I even ran from Leyawin all the way to the Imperial Waterfront to get Armand to make the fines disappear, but the stupid glitch still thinks there's enemies nearby.

So any ideas on how I should handle this? How could I sneak past the guard? Where else could I go to pay the blood price? Or is there something else? PLEASE HELP ME!!! — Unsigned comment by 67.165.162.35 (talk) on 25 March 2009

PlaceAtMe considered harmful?[edit]

Just musing over whether this is good advice: my understanding is that placeatme is generally best avoided unless absolutely necessary, especially regarding NPCs, and the moveto/resurrect(/reload, sometimes) solution is probably preferable. However, not having encountered this particular problem, I'm not certain which is the "correct" method. Thoughts...? --Cbh 18:38, 20 May 2009 (EDT)

The problem with PlaceAtMe is that it places a permanent copy of the actor in your save game, and this copy doesn't get deleted even if it dies in the game and the corpse gets removed by a respawn. As a result, regular use of PlaceAtMe can cause severe save game 'bloat'. Using MoveTo is preferable, but there may be situations where this is not possible (e.g. when the actor has died and their corpse has been removed by a respawn). --Gaebrial 03:00, 21 May 2009 (EDT)
Yeah I've changed that. PlaceAtMe can cause all sort of problems and should be avoided. The prid/resurrect/enable method is much better. –RpehTCE 03:13, 21 May 2009 (EDT)

Bug? Beware blood price penalty...[edit]

When I finished the quest except return the book to S'Krivva, I do the Mage-Guild's Quest:Ulterior Motives. (Since these two quests both are in Skingrad, I want to finish them in the same time.) I killed Mercator in the battle, since Mercator is one of the NPC in Skingrad Castle, killing him make me received a blood price penalty.

It's not really a bug though... As you say, he's still a Castle NPC, so S'Krivva awards the penalty on that basis. It's not like Sibylla Draconis causing a Blood Price for Ahdarji's Heirloom when she lives in Muck Valley Cavern and the mission is in Leyawiin. –rpehTCE 09:53, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
Avoid this by completing mage guild quests BEFORE going into Theif guild quests, in general i've always done the major guild quests in the order of DarkBrotherhood->MageGuild->TheifGuild->FightersGuild->Blades seems to be the most enjoyable and glitch free (and the theives guild quest dialogs are so funny if you are the arch mage already! as are the other guild's quests when you are max in one preceeding guilds). The game "expects" that you complete the quests in a more paralell manner, hence the difficulty in each quest as you advance. They tried to do level scaling to prevent you from doing it in a non-paralell way, a penalty as it were, but it didn't work. The problem being if you dont ever level up you can finish the whole game at level 1 easy. Sure you wont have high level spells or wepons, but scrolls and potions work, recharge using soul gems, forget paying and just steal hammers to repair!! lots of guides to how to do that :)

Theranis's Mistake[edit]

I looked at the readme files in my oblivion game, where it stated all the bugs that it fixed, and one said in the quest Theranis's Mistake, and it went on, suggesting that this quest was originally meant to be called theranis's mistake.--Arch-Mage Matt 16:05, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

Possibly, but it's more likely they actually meant Ahdarji's Heirloom, which is TG04Mistake in the CS.

Evening? No.[edit]

I've changed the "suggested time" in the article, because it the only time worse than that is broad daylight. In the evening, NPCs are eating dinner in a room you have to pass by, and going to bed directly along your escape route. (Shum Gro-Yarug is the "worst" of these, since he stays up until 2am). If you start in the evening, all you're going to do is end up waiting in real time for multiple game-hours, and ultimately getting caught when Hal or Shum go to bed unless you retreat all the way back to the wine cellar. Starting (much) later still gives you plenty of time to loot the wine cellar, free Amusei, and walk out long before the guards change to their "day shift", with much less risk and much less real time wasted.

Moved notes[edit]

  • In the first section of secret tunnel, there is an alcove on the left that contains some lockpicks on a rough wooden table.
  • A number of vials of Human Blood are present in the Pale Lady's feeding room for those with a hematological bent.
  • Feel free to search the Skingrad wine cellar for those hard to find vintages of your favorite tipple Tamika Vintage 399 and Surilie Brothers Vintage 399 in case you need them to gain Master Alchemy training. More generally, the cellar's stock can be fenced for more than enough to complete the rest of Independent Thievery.

I've been pruning notes for a task here at the UESPwiki. feel free to re-add them as you see fit. --AKB Talk 07:04, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Moved note.[edit]

  • Sometimes Shum gro-Yarug or another castle NPC will be present on the bridge when you attempt to sneak out with Amusei, and they will instantly give you a bounty of 500. Likewise, although the usual guard of the castle bridge will be absent, there is a chance that another guard will be patrolling the bridge. If either or both of these occur, try waiting an hour before leaving the castle front and they will likely be gone.

Is it me or does the bounty go after you get out of the City ? JackTurbo95 18:32, 19 April 2011 (UTC)

Moved bug[edit]

If the guards attack you while breaking into the dungeon, and you free Larthjar the Laggard, he will help you fight the guards. If the guards defeat him, rather than dying, he may freeze in mid-air. You will not be able to talk with him, and therefore unable to complete the quest. It is recommended you have a save point not long before this in case of such an event.

Im removing the part about being unable to complete the quest, as my recent character went through the castle to bypass the jailor and had no problems finishing the quest.--Catmaniac66 15:51, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

Were you able to confirm the part about him freezing in midair though? I wasn't. I couldn't even get the guards to attack him... they only attacked the player, even though he punched one of them to death. So I tagged this one as confirmation required. There's nothing unusual about him that I can see that would cause this. Kivan 00:57, 28 July 2011 (UTC)
This seems really unlikely, as there is no reason why a specific actor would freeze in a random specific instance like this. --DKong27 Tk Ctr Em 02:56, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Very easy and reliable alternate escape method instead of 2.6[edit]

After freeing Amusei, you can simply exit the wine cellar then proceed to follow the blood trail to the jail. You'll need to reopen the passageway using a switch next to the hidden door. You'll have to open the jail door which is a hard lock. Other then that, the jail guard is gone so it's an easy escape. I don't know why no one has noticed this before. — Unsigned comment by 208.127.163.249 (talk) at 21:10 on August 16, 2011

Theranis glitch[edit]

The quest says, "now i just need to find Theranis" but there is no arrow pointing me in the right direction and Theranis is literally no where to be found. I have no clue what to do, because I talked to every body in the castle and I looked everywhere, but I still can't find him. It sucks because I need to finish this quest to move on in the thieves guild. Any advice? -- oh and Larthjar isn't in the cell either. — Unsigned comment by 209.243.7.13 (talk) on 22 August 2011

Read the detailed walkthrough and follow it. It's pretty clear on what you need to do. rpeh •TCE 17:15, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Easiest way out of the dungeon[edit]

While you are escorting Amusei just wait for the guards to come. Pay Gold. You appear outside the castle. Your console scientist and tester- GH36 13:03, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

A bug?[edit]

Neither Amusei nor the Pale Lady appeared in the secret room, and Count Janus Hassildor keeps turning up in the strangest places (including outside, while steaming from sun damage) and pulling me into a conversation. I'm not sure whether this is a bug in the vanilla game or if it's mod-related. Xolroc (talk) 12:57, 25 September 2013 (GMT)

Move Two More Bugs[edit]

I moved these two bugs from the article. They've sat unconfirmed on the article for more than a year at a minimum. They are as follows:

  • If the guards attack you while breaking into the dungeon, and you free Larthjar the Laggard, he will help you fight the guards. If the guards defeat him, rather than dying, he may freeze in midair.
  • As you are sneaking out of the ale barrel secret door, Janus Hassildor may walk up to you. If you are in sneak mode and in the shadow, he will not see you and not leave. If you begin to move he will attack you and you will receive a bounty.

The first bug seems like normal buggy Oblivion physics that can happen with dead bodies from time to time. I don't think there's anything specific with this character or quest that makes it worth noting here. The second bug is likely due to having a quest active where Janus is seeking out the player. This is already mentioned in the Notes section. If you are in the middle of escaping with Amusei, it would be normal behavior for him to state that you're escaping and that could then lead to him attacking you. Forfeit (talk) 06:47, 13 April 2020 (GMT)

Completed this Quest without Bounty![edit]

it could be a possible bug or intentional mechanic, read on...

On my second playthrough, I completed the Mages Guild AND the Dark Brotherhood quests first, upon arriving to this quest, I completed it using the Get-a-job method, killed the pale lady and had 50% chameleon on, plus invisibility, but nothing on the escapee, we got outside, I met up with him and he told me where the treasure was, but I figured I would go pay off my bounty at the waterfront first.

The weird thing that happened, is that I was bounty 500 as usual, had to walk a good deal (past the oblivion gate in the graveyard) to get out of range so I could fast travel. Then I fast-traveled to the Fort just opposite of the waterfront in the imperial city. After it was closer to night time, I traveled across the water to the abandoned shack, and waited on the rooftop for Armond Christophe to appear. I jumped down when he arrived to pay my bounty off, and it said I had none. So either the quest intentionally, upon accomplishing the escape, fixed my bounty for me because it expected I would get one on this job, or, there is some bug with not completing the quest, and going out of the area mid-quest. The bounty was definitely 500. Also, I dont know if this even matters but I had a mage apprentice in tow for this quest as well, I just had her wait out of sight so she wouldn't sell me out when I opened locks or stole things. I had her wait just outside in the jail office while I opened the doors I needed to open without her looking, and then again just before the wine cellar. Then on the way back out of the wine cellar when it started to get real (after I freed Amusei) I told her to go back to her studies. I noticed she was walking the road beneath the castle bridge to the main castle (the big bridge with the flames on it) as I was fleeing with Amusei.

So I think the causes could be one of...

  • Having a Mage Guild Companion
  • By Fast Traveling During The Quest, Twice
  • By Using Invisibility on myself plus Chameleon

Lesser Factors

  • Not killing or attacking anyone except the pale lady
  • Never letting anyone see me do anything illegal, except escaping
  • Never intercepted by any guards so technically, I never resisted arrest
  • Passing by a newly opened oblivion gate for the first time (doubtful)
  • Passing by a dismissed companion walking (far) to get home
  • Amusei had magically "teleported" to the meet-up spot
  • I pickpocketed the pale lady before I killed her (I was invisible/chameleon 50% at this time)
  • My armor had the chameleon effect on it so I was 50% all the time, 100% if I used a spell
  • My invisibility was spell driven only
  • I used no lockpicking, just magic, to open locks -- and keys wherever possible
