Powers[edit]

Maybe I missed the section, but are these lesser/greater powers that you learn from the stone? It would be nice if you learned them and they were lesser powers.

It's on the page - "Doomstones have red runes and provide greater powers, similar to those of birthsigns, that can be used once a day" LeifHawk 11:42, 10 May 2006 (EDT)
Lesser powers can be used more than once a day, if I'm not mistaken. QuillanTalk 15:46, 9 August 2006 (EDT)

Reman Runestones[edit]

On the Reman Runestones, every one I have ever used has given me a Bound Claymore and Bound Cuirass, not a longsword or axe. I don't hit these much, but can anyone confirm? QuillanTalk 15:46, 9 August 2006 (EDT)

OK, I just checked and with Reman runestones the spell is either Rune Cuirass and Sword (if your blade skills are better than your blunt) or Rune Cuirass and Axe (if your blunt skills are better). Although the sword is just called a Bound Sword, you're right, it really is a claymore, i.e. it is two-handed. --Nephele 16:39, 9 August 2006 (EDT)
This page needs to include this information. I just spent quite a while looking for the "bound blunt" one because I thought it depended on the stone. A simple side note wouldn't hurt and I'm sure people would like to know which one they are going to get and why they seem to be getting that one all the time. — Unsigned comment by Piercethetruth (talkcontribs) at 11:33 on 27 February 2011 (UTC)
I added a note. --DKong27 Talk Cont 16:37, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

Where's the Shadow Stone?[edit]

I've been looking for it for awhile, anyone know exactly where it is? And is it outside, or is it inside of an Ayleid ruin?

Use this link to see exactly where it is. --Nephele 23:39, 28 August 2006 (EDT)

Out to Lunch[edit]

One time when I touched a Runestone, I got a message like "Even stones need rest. Stones sleep this day." and received nothing as a result. — Unsigned comment by 192.31.106.34 (talk)

Good catch. I've never seen this message myself while playing, but looking in the construction set I was able to find out about it. I've added the info to the page. --Nephele 14:45, 20 February 2007 (EST)

Difference between Heavenstones and Doomstones[edit]

how do you difference them? is there a minor thing that distinguishes them? Ghost 998

Heaven Stones are a type of Doomstone so, no, you can't tell them apart because they're the same thing. If you're actually wondering about Doomstones vs Runestones, Doomstones have red runes and Runestones have green runes. As for Heaven Stones vs Birthsign Stones, they're both Doomstones and therefore both have red runes. According to the construction set there is a difference in the model used for the two types (Heaven Stones all use RuneStoneExt02Glyph02.NIF whereas Birthsign Stones all use RuneStoneExt01Glyph02.NIF). As far as I can tell, the runes in the two cases are the same, but the shape of the stone is slightly different (the Heaven Stones have a notch on top of the stones; the Birthsign Stones don't). It's probably easier to tell them apart just by activating them, which doesn't have any risks. If it's a Birthsign Stone you'll be asked before being given the stone's power (and losing any previous power from a Birthsign Stone). If it's a Heaven Stone and you have enough renown, you'll just be given the stone's power (which never replaces any other powers). --NepheleTalk 02:26, 29 September 2007 (EDT)
"Which never replaces any other powers" is not true. When I used the Aetherius stone, it replaced my Bosmer creature-charm greater power, and my Dementia demoralize, with Gates of Aetherius. I ended up dying from a Daedra summon turning on me, so I didn't get a chance to get to the University to see whether I also lost those effects from the spell and enchantment altars. Catena
If you lost any other greater powers then it's a strange glitch or side effect that nobody else has reported. It's definitely not part of the Aetherius stone script: the only command there is Player.AddSpell DoomstoneAetherius — unlike the birthsign stones, which explicitly remove any other birthsign stone greater powers before adding the new one. --NepheleTalk 13:12, 1 March 2008 (EST)
My bad, I was looking in the wrong tab. I just tried again, from an earlier save, and all three of my expected greater powers were there. Catena

How is renown affected by Pilgrimage?[edit]

Let's say I have 40 fame and 12 infamy for 52 renown and I go pick up the Magnus Stone power which requires 50 renown. Then I decide I don't like the infamy piling up and I want to clear it by doing the Pilgrimage for Knights of the Nine. Does my renown go down to 40? Do I need to add 20 to my renown to get the next stone's powers or just 8? Can I lose the Magnus Stone powers? -madmyk

I haven't tested this, so the best way to find out is just to go try it yourself; then you can add your findings to the wiki. But based on the scripts used to give doomstone powers I would guess that
  • Yes, your renown would go down to 40.
  • Yes, you would need to then get another 20 fame or infamy points in order to get the Shezarr Stone powers.
  • No, you would not lose the Magnus Stone powers.
The last point is the one I am most sure about: the scripts only check your renown at the moment that you activate the stone. The appropriate spell is then added to your character and your renown is never again checked; there are also no scripts that ever remove the powers. And I know from experimenting with the console that you can use the doomstone powers once your character's been given them even if your character does not meet the requirements. --NepheleTalk 02:25, 18 November 2007 (EST)

Stone 'Type' Categorization[edit]

I'm just curious; why organize the types as 'Doom Stones' (Doomstones) and 'Rune Stones', rather than just 'Birthsign Stones', 'Heaven Stones', and 'Rune Stones'? (It sounds like the Birthsign and Heaven types are distinct enough from each other that they are more different than they are alike.) p.s. Sorry I changed the Category headings without considering existing links to the Sections on the page. Feel free to change them back if you feel that would more appropriate. (My reference to '_most_ game references' was probably misinformed anyway, and probably more informed by preference than fact.) -- Laisren 03:47, 19 February 2008 (EST)

The names "Heaven Stone" and "Birthsign Stone" are basically just made up terms; they're never used by the game itself (even within the construction set). Those stones are all lumped together within the game as Doom Stones. The closest the game comes to distinguishing them is in one of the University Lectures, where they are actually called "Birthstone Doomstones" and "Heavenly Doomstones"... so we should perhaps actually revamp this page to use those as the subcategory names (still within the general Doom Stone grouping).
As for Doom Stone/Rune Stone vs Doomstone/Runestone. The game clearly uses all four terms. However, based on our spelling rules, it seems that Doom Stone and Rune Stone should be the "official" names, since those are the names that appear on the stones themselves. But the way the headings are set up right now all the existing links will work and take people to the right place. In other words, the links Oblivion:Magical Stones#Doom Stones and Oblivion:Magical Stones#Doomstones both work. --NepheleTalk 11:45, 19 February 2008 (EST)

Blade/Blunt Skill Decision[edit]

Reman Rune Stones and Hestra Rune Stones both summon a melee weapon based on which skill (either blunt or blade) is higher for the player, defaulting to blunt in the event of a tie.

Hypothetically speaking, if my character has 100 ranks in both blunt and blades, and then fortifies blade to become 110, will these runestones then grant him the blade instead of the blunt? In other words, do the runestones take into account fortified skill levels? --Alaston

Based on the script, the values are checked using getactorvalue, which should provide the current value of the skill, taking into account all active effects (fortify, damage, drain, etc.) So fortifying your blade skill to a value past 100 should cause it to be recognized as the greater value. But it's worth doublechecking in game to be sure that I'm not misreading the scripts ;) --NepheleTalk 01:19, 21 April 2008 (EDT)

Tower Stone[edit]

I've gained the power from this stone but the open lock spell isn't working. I used it on a easy lock, hard lock, normal, whatever it isn't opening anything. I know I don't need to have the birthsign since I have used the shadow stone quite well. Is my 360 copy of oblivion messed up or have I found a pretty dam annoying bug?

PS3 user: I have used 'The Master's Hand' power to rise my Armorer to 53 and I still couldn't repair my magical items. I'll have to check the 'Master Key'.  :/

Similar problem with that stone. I can activate it, it ask if I want to get a power and nothing happens then. I have PC GOTY with latest patches (incl unofficial one), localized by 1C (Russian). Maybe it's due to game version/mods/patches 'cause I can recall this stone granted a power in original (first version) of Oblivion and open lock worked for me on hard locks. Not anymore... 193.227.231.65 04:51, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

Fort Stones[edit]

The Dunmer in the Arcane University just mentioned "Fort Stones" in a lecture. Are these in the game? — Unsigned comment by Debatra (talkcontribs) on June 27 2008

Yes, but only in Sancre Tor. See the notes for the lecture or the discussion on its talk page. --NepheleTalk 01:26, 28 June 2008 (EDT)

Conjuration Experience[edit]

While playing on a stealth based character, Acrobatics, Blade, Sneak, etc with no magic stats, I was using stones to obtain a bound claymore, hopping from stone to stone, searching for it, when I got conjuration XP! This may not be a glitch, as you do forcibly use a casting animation when the stone is used. Please stay your opinion. -M'aiq the Liar 08:19, 5 August 2008 (EDT)

Activating the stone counts as casting a conjuration spell, therefore it trains your skill as well.

This was already noted in the article. — LordDagon 08:27, 5 August 2008 (EDT)

Using Runestones on NPCs[edit]

I have not activated a runestone before, but from reading this page I was curious if the bound armor/weapon spell was cast out of the stone as a "Target" type of spell or just activates like a "Self" type of spell? Maybe it could be possible to put an NPC in between the character and the runestone and have the bound armor cast on the NPC if it is a "Target" spell. --Zephyr5 18:03, 15 October 2008 (EDT)

Bound Boots Runestone[edit]

I had read before that there is a runestone that gives the character bound boots. I can't find this runestone in the list, but I was wondering whether anyone else had heard of it or knew if it existed. --Zephyr5 18:08, 15 October 2008 (EDT)

gray fox infamy[edit]

will wearing the gray cowl allow you to activate doomstones with higher renown requirements — Unsigned comment by 81.141.178.10 (talk) on 9 August 2009

As it says in the article, "The renown requirement can be met by wearing the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal reward from the Thieves Guild, as it gives you 100 Infamy whenever worn." --GKTalk2me 05:33, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Possible glitch with Rune Stones and bows[edit]

I am not sure if this has been discovered previously but I can find no mention of it. I have noticed a glitch where by activating cetain runestones with a bow and arrows equipped will cause my arrows to become invisible and innefective once the bound items expire. I have tested all the runestone effects using PSB to obtain the spells and it only seems to effect Rune Cuirass and Sword from Reman rune stones and Rune Mace and Bracer from Hestra rune stones. Unequiping and reequiping the bow will solve the glitch, and sheathing the bound weapon before the timer expires will prevent it from occuring. It does not seem to effect any single bound item spells but I have not yet tested it on custom bound combination spells.Rhomphaia 18:43, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

Tower Key - Area effect?[edit]

Does that mean that you could open two locks within 15 feet of each other? — Unsigned comment by 70.78.21.220 (talk) at 07:55 on 27 March 2010

Yes. There's not all that many cases where you'll be able to do so, but it saves a little extra spell-casting or lock-picking when you do. Robin HoodTalk 08:41, 27 March 2010 (UTC)
i think it doesn't. I once maded an open very hard lock in 20 fts spell but however i tried, it only opened the lock i targeted.

Temporary Gift[edit]

Do the bithsign stones give you a greater power that you keep? That is to say, is the time limite discribed simply how long your new spell lasts when you cast it, or how long you get to keep that spell. Is this saying that you can potentially have the benifits of all the birthsigns?

Look here --Arny 20:18, 25 May 2010 (UTC)

Shadow Stone[edit]

I have never used a birthsign stone before but I used this one at the correct time and I got the verification message, something like "would you like to take on the powers of the Shadow?" and I clicked yes but nothing happened. I got no "you gained x power" and I checked my spells for the power and it's nowhere to be found...

Stupid question..[edit]

Do the powers given to you last forever, so you have the powers forever, and they don't dissapear, or do you only have them for say a day? I'm confused :L — Unsigned comment by Call999itsashark (talkcontribs) on 10 August 2010

You keep the power in your spell list forever (or until you pick another one from another stone), but the effect only lasts a short time and can only be used once per day. rpeh •TCE 13:36, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

thanks :) --Call999itsashark 15:26, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Fingernail Moon/ Shadow Stone[edit]

I've tried for a few days to locate this stone using that google-earth esque map that has been provided before, but it's utterly useless as I can't use it as an accurate reference since none of the roads are labelled. Could someone provide an image of the ingame map with one of those blue waypoint arrows on the stone? I'd appreciate it.--Irish Shamrock1 22:34, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

It wouldn't be of better help; placing the blue marker over the exact stone location would take luck. The stone is near Crestbridge Camp on the yellow road, east of a bridge and a little off road. It's also directly east of Trossan Camp. Hope that helped a little. -- Jplatinum16 23:26, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

Bound Shield[edit]

I can't find Bound Shield, where is it? — Unsigned comment by 216.126.252.214 (talk) at 22:53 on 17 November 2012

Are you asking if any of the stones summon a Shield, the answer is none of them. The only guaranteed place to purchase the spell is Athragar's shop. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 23:07, 17 November 2012 (GMT)

Split[edit]

I've added a split tag to the article. There's no reason not to have individual place pages for the main Doom Stones, and the generic Rune Stones can can still be treated like places while being kept on a three single pages. The current table format is rather useless at anything but summarising the blessings (no ingredient lists, no image, no maps). If someone's interested in the project, it would be a good way to help bring Oblivion's gamespace up to current standards. —Legoless (talk) 15:25, 9 November 2013 (GMT)

There's no point in separating them though. The page isn't large enough to warrant that. And all of the content is relevant to the subject of the article. (Source:WP:Splitting) I'll be taking the header off due to a lack of consensus. Feel free to revert if anyone disagrees. ChildofKyne (talk) 00:48, 10 September 2014 (GMT)

Pop-up message[edit]

Just recently I got the Jone stone, and I noticed that the game spat a message at me that went something like "The hero's fate is etched into Jone's face." I don't know, but I think each Heaven stone has a message. I can't find anything like that in the article. Should we add it? I can try and dig up the next few messages.73.188.71.188 06:31, 22 December 2015 (UTC)

So, the Aetherius stone spat out "The stars in their courses mark the Hero's doom upon Aetherius." Should this be in the article?73.188.71.188 03:30, 28 December 2015 (UTC)
"The children of Magnus char the Hero's Doom in their paths." I missed the Sithis stone. I'll get the rest, though.Blowthemandown (talk) 00:12, 12 December 2020 (UTC)
"The Dragon dreams, but the Hero gleams in his Eye." and "The shade of Shezarr shrouds the Hero's doom." I'll put these in the table, soon as I figure out how.Blowthemandown (talk) 00:18, 12 December 2020 (UTC)
I'm surprised if these aren't noted anywhere. Should be added to the article. —Legoless (talk) 03:06, 12 December 2020 (UTC)
