Quest Item Notes[edit]

Under the Dark Fissure section the handwritten note is mentioned. It is branded a quest item and as such not allowed to be dropped. I am using the console to relieve myself of quest items that I do not care for, does anyone know the Form ID for this particular item? Cheers, --Steve R 17:30, 9 May 2007 (EDT)

Check Oblivion:Notes for the FormID. --NepheleTalk 17:37, 9 May 2007 (EDT)

One thing that popped up for me -- I can't get rid of the "Hastily Scrawled Note". It gives the "can't get rid of a quest item" message and refuses to drop. Anyone know why?

I have this problem with a lot of quests -- I'm left with an unremovable quest item long after the quest has been completed. It's generally just a really irritating bug (but not too harmful since most quest items have no weight). - Zoogie 12:59, 22 May 2006 (EDT)

Shade of the Revenant[edit]

Actually, the phenomenon happened for me once on Sunday/Monday, and another time on Saturday/Sunday. So I guess it's random. - Lumpy

I went there on Middas night/Turdas Morning and the ritual did not occur for me. I'm gonna have to agree that it's random.

That might explain my experience: since I was in Skingrad on one of the relevant days, I thought I'd be clever and tried both the Fort Istrius and Fort Linchal sites; the astronomical phenomenon occurred, but there was a definite lack of black soul gem creation going on at either site. Then again, I'm not sure if it was scripted to happen at anywhere other than Dark Fissure, but I really felt for my character sitting there in the darkness and pouring rain for hours on end.--Cbh 03:27, 2 June 2007 (EDT)
The Shade of the Revenant is not random: as detailed on the page it happens once every eight days completely predictably. It happens at all sites on the same day and any one can be used to make black soul gems yourself. But to see necromancers making black soul gems you have to go to Dark Fissure. --NepheleTalk 03:34, 2 June 2007 (EDT)
I have found there to be a discontinuity in this sequence. The Shade occurs, as predicted, on the 2nd and 10th of Morning Star 3E434, however it does not occur on the 18th and 26th as it should, but on the 19th and 27th and every 8th day thereafter. Seen in multiple games and on different systems. Can anyone else confirm please? Screwball 11:18, 20 March 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, it's handy that it's at least reliable from that point of view, but on this occasion it was the necromancers I was staking out, or rather the lack thereof at the sites in question--my own fault for not following instructions!--Cbh 18:53, 5 August 2007 (EDT)

an add-on on this quest. If you desperately want a black soul gem, the soul trap + soul gem is needed for the quest. But i just went in the cave, killed the worm, read his note, and went back to the university, getting promotion to magician. Djens

This option is already spelled out in the quest description. I've tried to do some rewording to clarify that taking the note back to Raminus is enought to complete the quest. --Nephele 01:17, 8 February 2007 (EST)
If choosing the option of taking care of the Worm Anchorite inside the cave, one forgoes the option of ever witnessing the ritual. Having arrived on 17 Morning Star 3E434 to deal with the Worm Anchorite, the purple light shone on the altar outside for the next day, but no ritual was observed.--Lmstearn (talk) 13:32, 21 April 2014 (GMT)

Bug[edit]

I have sadly discovered that taking the note off the body of the Worm Anchorite after doing the 'cast soul trap yourself' method will cause you to be unable to drop the note, as it's not acknowledged. Has anyone else seen this? If someone has, I will add it to the bugs list. Or if no one says anything otherwise for a few days. ;) --Mikekearn 04:50, 13 June 2007 (EDT)

This has nothing to do with the order in which you picked up the note. That note is never changed to be a non-quest item, no matter how you do the quest. It's a problem that occurs with a fair number of the quest items in the game. --NepheleTalk 14:20, 14 June 2007 (EDT)

Note Bug[edit]

Will people PLEASE stop going on about the bug with the handwritten note? I've counted at least 3 instances of it and it's rather frustrating! Volanaro 12:18, 14 December 2007 (EST)

Black soul gem[edit]

"Though the Worm Anchorite respawns every eight days, he will only ever create a Black Soul Gem once."

Are you certain this is correct? Because I could've sworn he made the gems over and over again every eights days. (If I was there) Or maybe I dreamed it...... :| 77BeTa77 11:06, 28 March 2008 (EDT)

Based on the game's scripts, he is only supposed to create a black soul gem once. He will still walk out to the altar every eight days, but he won't do anything at the altar after the first time that the player is there to witness it. --NepheleTalk 11:52, 28 March 2008 (EDT)

I have seen the Anchorite go to the alter every eight days(as stated above) and he will put the lesser soul gem into the alter and cast a spell and (I've tested this one) take the lesser soul gem unless you kill him and if you do kill him before he takes it, (this is probably only for me seeing as I have had to polish the disk about twenty times) the soul gem has turned into a black soul gem. — Unsigned comment by Drake3555 (talkcontribs)

Repairing the orrery bug[edit]

I have the orrery plug in installed and it turns out bothiel is stuck behind the locked door to the orrery, and it needs a key so i cant open it. if i uninstall it will she dissapear or pop up outside? (im not on pc so i cant use any console commands to get her out, if there would be any)

On this page, specifically in the "Bugs" section, it states, "One known solution is to uninstall the orrery plugin; within 24 hours Bothiel should reappear in the Arch-Mage's Lobby." --GuildKnightTalk2me 22:03, 25 November 2008 (EST)

Alternative to the Dark Fissure?[edit]

One of the ways to 'learn' the secret of the mystery (that is to say, advance the quest to Stage 60) is to create your own Black Soul Gem. In that case, you you need to create that Gem at the Dark Fissure itself, or will one of the other Altar sites suffice? If you happen to be closer to Fort Istirus when the next Shade comes down, can you advance the quest without having to trek 2/3rds the way across Cyrodiil? —Dark Spark 04:21, 14 March 2009 (EDT)

I haven't tried it in-game, but the NecroAltarScript that runs on all the altars updates the quest to stage 60 if it was already at 50. That seems to suggest that any altar will work. –RpehTCE 04:56, 14 March 2009 (EDT)

"Apparent" Bug[edit]

Can anyone confirm this:

There is an apparently rare bug/glitch that makes your character unable to pick up the book "Necromancer's Moon".

I just put VN tags on it Volthawk 10:33, 29 October 2009 (UTC)

I've removed the bug note entirely. Until a better descriptions is provided (cause, solution, etc.) it will only confuse the reader, and so it's better left off the article. --Timenn-<talk> 15:52, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

Fixing the Handwritten Note bug[edit]

Miscarcand_(quest) made mention of a console command used to unset the Great Welkynd Stone's status as a quest item so you could remove it from inventory and avoid bugs with Martin. Just tested this on the Handwritten Note, and it will work to remove it after you've finished the quest.

SetQuestObject 000C7631 0 will remove the quest tag and allow you to drop it.

Should this be added to the article next to the reference to the bug? --Shizuka Kamishima 03:10, 12 December 2009 (UTC)

Dunno if I'm right, but I think that the SetQuestObject xxxxxxxx 0 would work with any quest object, not only with these particular two. And besides I don't think it needs to be added as it doesn't bug the game. Same thing happens with the plans for the ultimate heist, but that code isn't mentioned there either. --MC S'drassa T2M 03:16, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
I agree with S'drassa. Since it's not a quest-breaking bug, or a particular nasty one, I think it's not necessary to mention it. That console command would work for any item too. Talk Wolok gro-Barok Contributions 10:09, 12 December 2009 (UTC)

The book[edit]

Is there any way to keep the book Necromancer's Moon or to re-obtain it?I'd like it for my collection but Raminus Polus has taken it. — Unsigned comment by 98.250.176.142 (talk) on 7 May 2010

If you're playing on the PC you can use the console to obtain it. Otherwise, no. --GKtalk2me 02:05, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
The book can be pickpocketed back from him.

Moved notes[edit]

  • It's possible that the Necromancers will attack the Worm Anchorite on sight, saving you the trouble of chasing him down.
  • Although it is not mentioned until your next promotion, the step up to Magician rank allows you to access the Council Chamber freely.
  • Though the Worm Anchorite respawns every eight days, he will only ever create a Black Soul Gem once.

I've been pruining the notes from the quest pages. Feel free to re-add them after leaving a message here on why you re-added them. --AKB Talk 16:09, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Regarding the first note, it doesn't matter where the Necromancers are in the cave if you talk to him they seem to target him. I'm messing around with 100% chameleon so I just stood on and observed as they did battle...why would they go after him? TVthePunisher 23:30, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

Has anyone actually OBSERVED the ritual?[edit]

Ive tried this every time and gotten impatient, trying it once more and its been 4 in game hours. He doesnt actually perform the ritual. Hes just standing there with a grand soul gem in the altar but he never casts soultrap. Vanilla Oblivion, is this a glitch or what?--Catmaniac66 04:55, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

I've watched and have seen him walk up to the altar. When I hear a clicking noise, I snuck up and opened the altar, and it had a grand soul gem. A few minutes later its empty and the necromancer has a black soul gem in his inventory. He never once cast a spell though. --The Para 05:00, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, now the gem is gone AND not in his inventory, and I never got an update about seeing him perform the ritual.--Catmaniac66 05:02, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
