Spell[edit]

Adding a specific spell that I've found useful for taking out Necromancers. Grandmaster z0b 18:06, 15 February 2007 (EST)

Expand this page[edit]

Necromancy, being a major part of Oblivion, deserves a page with much more information on it. That being said I would really appreciate any ideas on how to make this page more informative.
If you have any Ideas please post them here. Thank You :) Pappasmurf 22:10, 15 February 2007 (EST)

Well, I just added a list of known Necromancers. (The results of a quick 5-minute search on this site - I have to reinstall the Construction Set to be able to look it up and get a more complete list.) Feel free to add to it. --TheRealLurlock Talk 23:35, 15 February 2007 (EST)
Also, I would like to eventually have a page comparable to Oblivion:Bandit for necromancers, e.g. a page providing stats for the generic necromancers you encounter in the game, and some amount of info on what to expect to find in a necromancer lair. For consistency, it seems that page would be called Oblivion:Necromancer; and it would probably have enough content to justify being a separate page from this one, at least in my opinion. It would still accomplish the primary goal, however, of providing more information on necromancy in the game of Oblivion. --Nephele 00:12, 16 February 2007 (EST)
I think that a seperate page on Necromancers is a good idea assuming there is enough info to justify it. There would obviously be several links between Necromancy and Necromancers so we are in no risk of being too scattered. I admit I was suprised to find no page on necromancy when I first joined the wiki, and I definatly believe that the page idea you proposed should be done. :) That being said I would gladly create the page myself but I lack the Oblivion CS required to gather this info. The Gravefinder's Repose[edit]

Shouldn't The Gravefinder's Repose be somewhere on the list of quests related to Necromancy? It's not related to the Mages Guild, but it should still be on that list. Maybe the description and criteria for the list need to be changed. Giamgiam 18:14, 28 June 2007 (EDT)

Good idea. Done. --RpehTalk 05:03, 29 June 2007 (EDT)

Another Necromancer[edit]

In the mages guild quest liberation or aprehension there is a woman called Mariette Rielle, i looked on her page and it said she was a necromancer, shouldn't you add her??? Just a question.

Now added. Thanks for spotting that. Just an answer ;) --RpehTalk 11:53, 13 August 2007 (EDT)

History[edit]

does anybody else who has read the latest harry potter book find this section similar to dumbledore and grindlewald's history?

Well, Oblivion has been around a lot longer than the latest Harry Potter book. So if anything, the book is similar to (or copied from) Oblivion, rather than the other way around. --Saruuk 23:02, 11 August 2007 (EDT)

Leyawiin Quest[edit]

I've taken this out of the lists of quests related to Necromancy. My reasoning is that, although Kalthar, a former necromancer is involved with the quest, that's not really the point - the quest isn't about necromancy. The Cheydinhal one is fair enough because Falcar is revealed as a necromancer during the quest. I'll agree it's a fine distinction but I think this is the right divide. —RpehTCE 15:39, 18 December 2007 (EST)

Tamrielic Vs. Oblivion[edit]

It bothers me that this page only talks about The Cult of the Black Work Necromancers (Mannimarco's devotees) and the event's in Oblivion rather than Necromancy in the Elder scrolls in general. The Telvanni practiced it, the Ayleid practiced it, why does Mannimarco get all the attention though? — Unsigned comment by 65.78.164.231 (talk)

Sorry, but this article is in the Oblivion namespace, and most Necromaners in the game are a part of Mannimarco's group. However, you could start a Lore:Necromancy article that features Necromancy from other places. --Michaeldsuarez (Talk)/(Contribs) 21:23, 25 March 2008 (EDT)

Falanu Hlaalu[edit]

From what she says you can cleary make up she is an necromancer, see her page for more details. 217.123.145.58 09:58, 19 April 2008 (EDT)Moersleuteltje

Not really. Her page talks about her being a necrophiliac; a necrophiliac is definitely not the same as a necromancer. She is not a member of the necromancer faction, and I don't see anything in her information that hints at her being a necromancer. --NepheleTalk 12:54, 19 April 2008 (EDT)

Two points[edit]

First of all, Mercator Hosidius is not listed as a known necromancer. Perhaps he may not be pasrt of the hidden necromancer's cult faction, but if he is, he should be on here too. Also, I'm pretty sure that the book Arkay, the Enemy is a necromantic text. If someone could fix this, that'd be nice. --Twentyfists 12:33, 15 September 2008 (EDT)

Added Mercator Hosidus, as he pretty much confesses that he is a Necromancer himself. The book you mentioned does not appear in Oblivion, thus does not belong on this article. --Timenn < talk > 06:44, 16 September 2008 (EDT)

Before Mages Guild[edit]

Do Necromancers attack you before you join the Mages Guild - Thorian

As far as im aware, yes, their Faction should ensure that they are always hostile to the player. --Volanaro Talk 13:08, 30 January 2009 (EST)

Invisibility doesn't work?[edit]

"However, invisibility does not work; for whatever reason their spells are able to target you regardless. Chameleon is also effective, providing you have a decent leveled spell or enchantment."

I'm curious about the above passage. Seeing as how I have gone invisible right in front of necromancers, hung around and waited, watching them and their undead summons and even pickpocketing them after they leave combat mode, I don't see how invisibility does not work. Can someone explain this to me? Or may I remove the passage as incorrect? - User:Aces Andre 18:25, 20 May 2009 (EDT)

Is there any chance of studying necromancy[edit]

like getting ruin skulls and joining a Necromancy guild or doing a quest for a Necromancer THANKS get back to me- Taranula Scaryns oct 1st thu 10:30 (EDT)— Unsigned comment by ArgonianBoy (talkcontribs) on 9:40, 1 October 2009

No, it's not possible to join a Necromancers Guild or do a quest for a Necromancer in vanilla Oblivion. If you follow the Mages Guild questline you do learn a thing or two about necromancers, though. Talk Wolok gro-Barok Contributions

Does using Black Soul Gems Make You a Necromancer?[edit]

I read on this site somewhere that using black soul gems makes you a necromancer and it said how to make them: there must be stars in the sky, add a grand soul gem into an altar, one can be found at a cave in the mages guild quest line, for more info, look it up on the site, the caves on the map and i found it before entering the mages, and afetr putting it in the altar, it says cast a soul trap spell and vooala. but somewhere else it said that necromancers raise skeletons if they are full. so can you use black soul gems to do this? — Unsigned comment by 75.28.190.38 (talk) at 05:09 on 6 January 2010 (UTC)

You can make Black soul gems in the game, but in no way does it affect your character whatsoever. No mention of it at all. If you want to roleplay, you could say in-game you might be considered something of a necromancer, but in reality, your still you. — Unsigned comment by Arch-Mage Matt (talkcontribs) at 05:09 on 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Is summoning undead considered Necromancy?[edit]

Nothing I've read so far in any of these discussions would seem to indicate that summoning undead (skeletons, zombies, ghosts) is considered to be the banned practice of necromancy, but isn't that EXACTLY what the practice of necromancy entails? There are even Guild members who sell such spells, even though it would seem counter intuitive to the practice being banned (punishable by being kicked out of the Guild). Was this an oversight from Oblivion, or do they somehow consider summoning undead white necromancy? — Unsigned comment by 69.125.235.232 (talk) at 23:22 on February 8, 2011

Summoning the undead, while still controversial (see Trayvond the Redguard), is not technically Necromancy. Summoning brings the being from another Plane to temporarily assist the summoner. Necromancy involves actually taking corpses and summoning souls to permanently inhabit them. Of course they tend to steal and desecrate these bodies. Necromancers also work with Black Souls, or sentient souls, which while taboo is obviously not discussed much despite the player being able to do so. --DKong27 Talk Cont 04:45, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
The former Mages Guild Magister Ulliceta gra-Kogg has the following to say:
"When a student of Conjuration summons a guardian ghost, he is touching on the School of Necromancy".
This implies that summoning undead is considered 'mild' necromancy. Of course, gra-Kogg turned out to be a Necromancer herself (see The Black Arts On Trial), so she may have been exaggerating somewhat in order to give necromancy some legitimacy within the guild. Nevertheless, Hannibal Traven seems to hold her arguments in high regard.--Tovenam 22:30, 31 August 2011 (UTC)

What spells are considered necromancy?[edit]

Are there any spells you can make or have this is considered necromancy? If there is what are they called and how do you get them? If there is necromancy spells and you cast them in front of a mage's guild person will you get kicked out? Please try to answer all of my questions. — Unsigned comment by 69.117.107.56 (talk) at 13:03 on 30 April 2011

You can summon undead with conjuration, and there's a reanimate spell which can bring corpses back to life. Soul trapping could also be considered necromancy. You won't get kicked out of the Mages Guild for casting them, though. Legoless 12:26, 30 April 2011 (UTC)
