Black Soul Gem Replacement[edit]

Summon Xivilai, Summon Lich and Summon Gloom Wraith all summon creatures with grand soul levels that can be trapped using azura's star eliminating the need for black soul gems however you must have master level conjuration for any one of the spells to be useable ~~Watevir~~ 12:25 11 June 2008 (GMT)

The purpose of the black soul gem is to capture a NPC soul, neither are meant to substitute the other, and black soul gems are great for Necromancer lairs.-Puddle 13:57, 11 June 2008 (EDT)
None the less when you need it for things such as enchanting it is far more useful as Black Souls are the same stregth as Grand Souls, the only difference is that Black Souls require Black Soul gems~~Watevir~~ 12:35 11 June 2008 (GMT)
You're right inasmuch as the strengths of soul that can be contained by both types are the same, but BSGs are more useful because they are the only gems that contain NPC souls. However. You've already made the point that you need Master level Conjuration to cast your spells. Add in that monsters with Grand Souls only appear for higher level characters and Black Soul Gems become much more useful as they allow any character to obtain a Grand soul by killing a low-level NPC. What you have described is a good source of grand souls, but it's not a replacement for Black Soul Gems. –RpehTCE 15:06, 11 June 2008 (EDT)

Best to recharge weapons?[edit]

I am a Warrior using the Shivering Isles weapon "Perfect Amber Sword". I want to know the most effective way of recharing it. I am not prepared to get a different daedric weapon and enchant it with a 1 second Soul Trap. I have already given Umbra in for the Mask of Clavicus Vile. -I can use a Mage's Staff for 40 second soul trap, but that would mean 180 charge per use of the staff, so I would have to replenish it that way. -I could train my Mysticism skill, but being born under the sign of the Atronach makes it quite difficult to get a stream of Magicka. -I could make a blade with up to 20 seconds of soul trap. -I could rely on Varla Stones, or Soul Gems found in random loot or buy them off the Mages Guild members. -I could pay 1 gold a charge at Mages Guilds.

Which is the best option? Thank you -CoM_Dark_Rider

The best way would be to put a...
  • Soul Trap - 1-2 secs
  • Drain Health - 100pts 1sec

Then go get Azura's Star, and hot key it. Everytime you kill a creature it's Soul Trapped, and goes into the Star. If fighting alot of NPC's, Summon really anything, and trap it's soul somehow - should be good with that untill another trappable Monster24.13.91.229 15:05, 18 June 2009 (EDT)

For the best way, exploit the duping glitch ( Here ) with varla stones. MikeTalk 15:37, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

Bows?[edit]

Is it possible to soul trap with a soultrap effect-enchanted bow's arrows, especially if poisoned? Just crious, because if it's possible, Marksmanship just became a whole lot more attractive... GenocideHeart 09:57, 5 March 2009 (EST)

Yes, the bow "Hatred's Soul" comes with 13 arrows that have Soul Trap on them. As for bows, you can enchant one to have Soul Trap on it, and it will work just as if you cast the spell.24.13.91.229 15:05, 18 June 2009 (EDT)

Umm, I'm trying to enchant an Amber Bow with Soul Trap but the option isn't available (it just says Fire, etc. Soul trap is exempt) so how can I enchant my bow with Soul Trap???— Unsigned comment by 96.254.7.55 (talk)15:35, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

First you have to be able to cast the spell, which I believe requires a minimum of 25 mysticisim. MikeTalk 15:35, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

what do they do?[edit]

ok ive got a soul trap staff and ive traped souls of some cretures and i put there souls in some gems but what now what happens? whats the point?

You use them to recharge magical weapons. Whenever a magical weapon runs out of charges, you can use a filled soul gem to recharge some of it's magic. You can also use soul gems with an enchanting altar to create magical clothing and weaponry. - User:Aces Andre 09:41, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

although followers cant[edit]

If you resurrect a generic NPC (such as a marauder) after giving him a few black soul gems and an enchanted weapon with soul trap, if the NPC equips the weapon (sometimes they don't) and he kills other inhabitants of the dungeon, the soul gems are filled. maybe this (or a reworded version of this) could be put in the notes section? anyone agree? Mikeyboy52 13:05, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

Yes, that's a great note, and a great strategy! — Unsigned comment by 97.113.141.60 (talk) at 00:36 on 24 April 2010 (UTC)
A much easier note would be that NPCs can soul trap.--Arch-Mage MattTalk 01:04, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
thats a given, as npcs can often use the effects, what i meant is the fact that while you cant reverse pickpocket onto a follower, you can give the weapon and soulgems to an "undead" follower so to speak. look at the last note of azuras star, i was thinking about editing to say that you can use that reanimate spell or the staff that is dropped by a necromancer (i cant remember the name) :P you can completely get rid of the need to have a follower with soul gems, i dont think there are any O.o this could possibly shorten the last not while provide a good tip. maybe something like "If you store a zero-weight weapon and as many soul gems as you want onto a body and than reanimate the body with (that staff i was talking about) than your undead follower will capture souls for you." so far only an anon has thought it was good though O.o Mikeyboy52 15:15, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

summoned creatures[edit]

if an enemy that you have cast a soul trap spell on is killed by a creature you have summoned do you get the soul, or do you have to personally deal the fatal blow to receive the soul?Elvenator 06:41, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

See the fourth bullet under Notes. Robin HoodTalk 17:52, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

where can i get black soul gems?[edit]

i want to know where i can get black soul gems.

See this. --Arch-Mage MattTalk 02:03, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

Wait, in basic words please?[edit]

I'm very very very new to this game, not too bad at it though and I just bought 'Spell Trap' in the hope of enchanting some more weapons, I find that aspect awesome. So with Lesser and Petty soul gems am I only able to trap the souls of rats etc. because I used Soul Trap on a Khajiit Bandit and killed it appropriately and was told that I couldn't get his soul. Help a newbie! — Unsigned comment by 121.220.202.125 (talk) on 13 October 2010

You need special Soul Gems to trap the souls of NPCs. See Oblivion:Black Soul Gem for details. --Timenn-<talk> 08:42, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

Gem Quality[edit]

Uhh, Yeah!

I was woundering if black soul gem's were any better for enchanting items than grand soul gem's. — Unsigned comment by 173.20.133.176 (talk) on 16 October 2010

is there a soul gem sword?[edit]

I'm not talking a bout a sword with soul trapping effects. I'm talking about a sword with a Soulgem built in! If there is, that would be freakin' awesome!G-Raffe 09:22, 21 January 2011 (UTC)

Trap Soul summons[edit]

I suppose you actually have to kill summons to trap their souls? If a summon expire it won't trigger soul trap?
46.138.149.0 03:22, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

yeh you have to kill them. (From Fear to Eternity- Eddie The Head 03:23, 3 September 2011 (UTC))

Does this target self?[edit]

Is it possible to figure out exactly how this spell effect works? I imagine that it has to target the caster in order to take out the empty soul gem and to put the filled soul gem into the caster's inventory. Does that mean that it has a chance of being absorbed three times (the two above, plus when it hits the hapless target(s))? That might explain the weird effects that some people have noticed about not being able to capture souls. Hey, if it's true of telekinesis, chances are good that it's true here, too.
