Key[edit]

Essence Drain[edit]

For some reason, when I am wearing the Bloodworm Helm, the "Essence Drain" spell doesn't show up in my inventory! Why not? I have Oblivion for 360. Thanks! Verin Sedai 18:50, 21 December 2006 (EST)

What is your Restoration skill level? Is there any chance that your skill level is too low to cast the spell that you're receiving at your level? For example, if you're level 15, the Essence Drain skill is a master-level spell, so I'm guessing that you would have to be at 100 in Restoration skill (and that's natural, not fortified) to be able to cast the spell. --Nephele 15:23, 23 December 2006 (EST)
I just did some more testing of this and can now confirm that only the lowest level helm works as advertised. There's a mistake in all the higher level scripts: instead of using player.addspell to add the Essence Drain spell, they use plain addspell. I had to stare at the scripts for about 20 minutes to finally realize what the mistake was... and that was after testing twice in game showed that there must be a mistake somewhere. So unless you get the helm at level 4 or below, you won't get the Essence Drain spell. --Nephele 01:28, 9 January 2007 (EST)

Getting Helm too Early[edit]

If you acquire the helm after completing A Plot Revealed, but before actually getting this quest, Traven will ask you for the Helmet when you return to him with it, but there will be no dialogue option allowing you to give it to him. This will prevent you from advancing any further. (Xbox 360, v1.2.1; untested on PC)

Irlav Jarol's corpse is not enabled until this quest is started; the only way to get the Bloodworm Helm is to activate Irlav's corpse. So I don't see how it is possible to get the Helm before this quests starts. Can anyone explain how this bug is possible? --NepheleTalk 00:15, 5 August 2007 (EDT)

Curiosity[edit]

So can one assume that Irlav used the Helm to summon Daedra to fend off the necromancers? And that the dremora at the end of the fort betrayed him? Just curious when i saw the dremora standing over his dead body...--piercethetruth

Does the helm disappear like the Necromancers Necklace?[edit]

Like the headline asks, after you give it to Traven, does it disappear from the game or can you get it back when you become Arch-Mage yourself?

Yes it does. The unofficial Oblivion Patch makes it appear in the Arch-Mage's nightstand though. –RpehTCE 02:24, 15 February 2008 (EST)
Aww, well, I'm not someone who's affraid to use the console to get back what he thinks he deserves, goes a lot faster than downloading the unofficial patch, and it corrects only what I want correcting. Thanks for the info, I could've guessed it myself, but it looked strange with nothing saying whetheror not is disappeared, and people talking about how Essence Drain doesn't work (meaning they used(d) it instead of giving it up). - Korunox 07:25, 15 February 2008 (EST)

New Bug?[edit]

"I was expelled from the Mages Guild for killing some wizard and go told to collect 20 daedra hearts & 20 vampire dusts. Along the way I came across the Bloodworm helm... when I got back to the arcane university and gave up my peanalty I couldn't continue with the next quest as I already had the Bloodworm helm - Draven cant start me off looking for it. I don't really want to go back to an old saved game as it was many hours ago and I've completed several oter quests since!

Is there a way to get him to give me the next quest or am I stuck with not being able to complete the Mages Guild?"

This is the same problem noted above at #Getting Helm too Early. It's not specifically to do with the fact that you have been expelled - it's a bug with the scripting at the end of the previous quest. See the link in Kivan's comment above for a fuller description of the bug. I have rewritten the bug report on this page accordingly. --Gaebrial 03:58, 5 March 2008 (EST)
I made a slight change in the wording of the bug. The way it was written, it could be interpeted to mean if you traveled to Fort Teleman so that it was marked on the map, you would not be able to complete the quest. I actual did travel to Fort Teleman, between the End of Plot Revealed and before the Bloodworm Helm quest. I did not enter Fort Teleman. I was able to complete the Bloodworm Helm quest without any problems. When I get time, I will create a new character to determine exactly what conditions will cause this bug to occur. J'Skar[edit]

I'd guess that the events of the previous quest got to him and he decided to leave the world of magic for a while. Or less prosaically, the developers didn't want a character with no purpose cluttering up the lobby. –RpehTCE 03:00, 9 March 2008 (EDT)

More than one Helmet?[edit]

Chaos_prince[edit]

well, I'll test it, but can't you just use the resurrection spell(SI) on his body then clone the resurrected body, and then kill the clone, save before it hits the ground and then loot the body. Then when you give the clone helmet to travern, go back and have your own?

Ranking Master-Wizard[edit]

Can anyone help me? In the mages guild I'm Arch-mage but I'm not a master wizard. I've been trying to figure out why and how I could at first I thought I just needed to help one of the guild members with a quest but couldn't find anyone so I started searching around the computer websites for answers (none came) Now I think I might have some how skipped Master-Wizard and jumpped to Arch-mage can someone help me I'm confused and I really don't want to start a new game because I've gotten so far :(— Unsigned comment by 74.229.229.173 (talk) on 30 June 2009

I don't totally understand your problem. If you are an arch-mage, you are not supposed to be a master-wizard anymore. If you have finished the mages guild questline, i.e. Confront the King, you are supposed to be an Arch-mage. Without further details, I'm afraid I can't help you any further. Are you two both stupid he said he never was a master wizard it went straight from wizard to arch-mage, i got the same glitch, i was sitting here and thought wait i have all the achievements for oblivion i went to look and its the only one i dont have which means that i have Arch-Mage achievement but not master-wizard so im just gonna do it on another file but ther is no way to fix ive tried everything. and for what quest hes probaly none of them because he finished the mages guild quests— Unsigned comment by 70.210.29.76 (talk) at 23:20 on 20 July 2009 (UTC)

I've had this same problem: it didn't seem to matter which artifact I acquired first; I was never given the 'Advancement' topic from either Traven or Polus. Reaching Master-Wizard rank is an XBox 360 achievement, so for us completion-freaks, it's frustrating to have completed the entire guild questline (reaching Arch-Mage) but not the rank preceding it. While I don't see anything obvious in the Construction Set, it strikes me looking through the code that it would be very easy through some minor bug to miss one rank increase anywhere along the way throughout the entire Mages Guild quest line. It might be interesting, if you have a large history of saved games, to look back and see if your rank increases all happened where they should have (based on this information). —Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 23:27, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
The previous unsigned comment (66.41.92.158) was me before I made a UESPwiki account, heh. Thanks for taking a look; the "fragility" of the rank-increase code is interesting. As for attempts to re-load saved games to avoid the bug, nothing seemed to help although I will qualify my statement by saying I only went back to the previous quest before the two, A Plot Revealed. From there, I completed the two quests in different orders. I'd also like to note that my new character/achievement attempt went off without a hitch. --Irene Metrick 16:48, 28 October 2009 (UTC)
Did you happen to notice if you were the "correct" rank during A Plot Revealed when you re-loaded? Because of the noted fragility, once you were off by one rank, I believe you'd stay off by one thereafter. Yes, I most definitely was the correct rank beforehand. I'd like to suggest that because Arch-Mage was the end of the questline–and I want to say that I know nothing about computer programming or coding–once Confront the King starts, perhaps some different event is triggered wherein Completion=Arch-Mage!rank or something. In other words, my non-existent game code/design background tells me that perhaps I successfully reached Arch-Mage because I reached the end; had I encountered a rank skip earlier, it probably would have been off by one as you propose until I reached Arch-Mage. The way it works throughout, at least as far as I could see, is basically at the completion of each quest, you get an "increase rank" command (as opposed to setting it to a specific rank appropriate to the quest). Thus, if it's possible to somehow start the next quest without completing an earlier one, then you would be off by one forever after. I didn't see anything that ever specifically set your rank to Arch-Mage, nor that tested for it, but finding all possible instances of something like that can be challenging. —Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 22:46, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

Quest won't update when i arrive at Fort Teleman?[edit]

When i get to Fort Teleman, the quest won't update to the "I've arrived" state, it stays at the "I Should travel to teleman" state. I've tried fast traveling, walking all around the external area, even clearing some of the dungeon and it still won't update, the arrow always points to the door no matter what i try.

Has this happened to anyone else? Am i doing something obviously stupid?

Did you enter Fort Teleman before you got the quest? When I did the quest, I got the message after I entered Fort Teleman, but I did not enter Fort Teleman before I got the quest. I did however travel to the external area before I got the quest. If you were able to complete the quest by giving the Blood Helm to Arch-Mage Traven, then you will not have any problems with the rest of the Mage's Guild quests and will be able to advance as normal.
There is a reported bug about this quest. The first wording said if you "traveled to Fort Teleman" before you got the quest, you would not be able to complete the quest. However, as I mentioned I did travel to the external area beofe I got the quest and I had no problems. I got the "I've arrived" message as soon as I went through the door.
I suspect there is a bug, but I am not sure what triggers it. When I start a new character, I will try to do tests for find out.

I Don't believe i went near Teleman before starting this quest, as it wasn't marked on my map and there were no other map markers near it. After this quest, i had no more problems with the MG line(aside from the usual permanent quest items). 72.201.56.155 03:06, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
In reply to your edit, i cleared the dungeon, traveled in every way possible, etc, While the quest was active in my journal, not before. Again, i went nowhere near Teleman before this quest was active. Bug:Damaging the Mage Quest line[edit]

Now that I have read all of Kivan's entries about getting the Bloodworm Helm too early on the talk pages, I have concluded that there is a verified bug that will prevent a character from advancing any further in the Mages Guild questline.

The reason I have following this is because I almost rolled back three hours of game play when I read about the bug. The way it was orginally written, it implied that if you merely traveled to Fort Teleman, the bug would be triggered.

What I have piece together is that Irlav Jarol's body containg the Bloodworm Helm will appear in Fort Teleman after the A Plot Revealed quest is completed, but before Traven gives the Bloodworm Helm quest. If the character loots the Bloodworm Helm from Irlav Jarol's body before the character receives the Bloodworm Helm quest, Traven will ask for the Helmet when the characters returns to him with it, but there will be no dialogue option allowing the character to give it to him. This will prevent the character from advancing any further in the Mages Guild questline.

Also there is an anonymous report that a player did not receive the I have arrived at Fort Teleman. I need to find Irlav Jarol, who should have the Bloodworm Helm. message when the character entered Fort Teleman and the quest arrow was pointing to the exit althought the quest.

Although these two bugs do not appear to be related, as a professional software developer I suspect they are related. There is obviously a problem with the Mages Guild questline script, so I suspect there may be other ways to accidently trigger one or both bugs.

Therefore I conclude the safest course of action for a play is to not enter Fort Teleman before receiving the Bloodworm quest from Traven.

The UOP has fixed the first issue with the body appearing early. Irlav Jarol's dead body will not be enabled until Traven tells you to go there, setting stage 10 in his dialogue result script.
It is however still possible to enter the fort, and then bolt forward fast enough to outdistance the script check to trigger stage 20. Stage 20 does nothing other than tell you you've arrived in the fort, and set the quest marker to Irlav's body. You can still loot the helm without stage 20 ever being set since his body's script only checks to see if you're below stage 30. This will be getting fixed with the UOP Supplemental's next update. Vanished corpse quest-breaking bug[edit]

Irlav's body was not present in Fort Teleman when I got there. I think I had entered the fort before getting the quest (or I had at least 'discovered' it). However I had not seen Irlav's body before. Maybe the corpse fell through the floor? Or does it disappear when the fort respawns? Creating the helm with the console is probably the only way of salvaging this quest now. :-( Hope it works. I don't see why this would happen, as the Quest Script disables the living version and enables the dead as soon as it starts. Regardless, there is no way to finish if you do not have console access on PC, as the living version does not carry the Helm. --DKong27 Tk Ctr Em 23:12, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

Yes they are in the same room. Talked to him and everything seemed usual. So this can happen. Although I must plead guilty of having installed 20+ mods, so one of them may have gone rogue and tempered with the quest script.--71.80.121.81 04:28, 9 December 2011 (UTC)
