Ancestor Moth Bug

The truth about the Ancestor moth bug on Xbox 360:

After trying the Thieve's Guild quest line a dozen times and reading hundreds of posts something becomes clear. It NOT possible to complete the questline if the Moth catacombs are entered before joining the guild.

This qualifies as a major bug since ESIII players are certain to talk to Azura as soon as possible. The Azura quest hook comes at level 1 and the quest is doable at level 2. At that point all it takes to break the quest line beyond repair is a short trip down the hill and a little exploring.

In my case the Azura quest and the bad script ran at less than 30 hours. Now my character has more than 430 hours and I can't finish the quest. I tried starting over but I just can't go that slow anymore and the lewt absolutely sucks.

What does not help is the constant advice that the quest can be completed by people who are not on a console. If it can be completed then what is the exact procedure to follow on an Xbox? No more couda, shouda, wouda. I have wasted over 60 hours repeating this quest line. Is there any procedure that has actually been confirmed to work on an Xbox 360? — Unsigned comment by 68.149.251.64 (talk) on 29 October 2008

I am using the Xbox 360 and thought it wasn't possible, but this is what I did and then I could proceed. I went to the Temple of the Ancestor Moths, and after that I did the May the Best Thief Win quest to trigger the "Independent Thievery". After completing that very first one, I followed Amusei to see where he went (and boy, he is a slow walker). Amusei ended up by one of the beggar's bedroll in Leyawiin (but one does not have to follow him, like I did - I have double checked that - just enter the west gate and follow the wall, going south) and he stayed there for the rest of the quest line. All I had to do was to go to him, instead of waiting for him to contact me, and I could ask him the question. like "What is the message?" PS. I also have the Dunbarrow Cove plugin, where I had already fenced enough to be able to continue (but since I had joined, I think I could have used Ongar in Bruma) Tockenen 10:39, 11 February 2009 (EST)
I was able to duplicate your results on the XBOX 360. I have all the patches and all the plugin's except for KoTN and Horse Armor. I triggered the temple bug. Got the quest from Methendrel. Then got the "Independent Thievery". Then I had to sell enough for the Gray Fox to talk to me. After that the questline proceeded almost normal except for having to go to Amusei. M. benifits?

when you complete the other 3 guilds, you always seem to get something neat. (dark brotherhood - 200 gold a week, mages guild - neat-o chest plus 5 billion people to follow you, fighters guild - command of guild and neat loot chest) but the thieves guild only has the grey cowl. i mean thats neat but it feels... unrewarding. am i missing something??

danny 17:10, 2 November 2008 (EST) jos

No, there isn't any other rewards for the questline, unless you count the new guild hall you get for the Thieves Guild. As for the unrewarding part, it depends on how you view it. I personally think that the Fighter's Guild and Dark Brotherhood rewards for the end of the questline are too vague, not specific enough to the questline. The alchemy ingredient chest is invaluable to Mage-type characters, and the Grey Cowl allows you to steal whatever you wish without risk of bounty, making it invaluable to Thief-type characters. The Fighter's Guild gives you weapons, but players are more likely to sell them than keep them, making it purely money based, as is the Dark Brotherhood reward. --Lady Azura 20:11, 18 November 2008 (EST)

Methredhel, Carwen & Tivela Lythandas

I have just completed the thevies guild quests and am taking full advantage of the benefits of the Gray Fox Cowl. I return to the guildhall in Dareloth's Basement after a hard day's thieving (with the cowl equiped) and find the basment area filled she says:

"Welcome back ... but where is Rythe?"

I thought at first I had misheard her but I encountered the same again from Carmen one time on leaving the guildhall.

I had no idea what they was talking about until I realised that it must be related to the "Brush With Death" quest and Rythe Lythandas (Methredhel and Carwen, both being elves, had adopted some of the speech of Tivela Lythandas). I was wondering as to the reason for this, any ideas?

(I have, by the way, completed "Brush With Death", I play Oblivion on a 360 and I have the GOTY edition)

Thieves Guild Members

I noticed there aren't any Orcs among Thieves Guild members. Similarly, the Mages Guild has no Orcs in its ranks. Since the Mages Guild page does mention there are no Orc members in the Guild, you may want to put the same statement up on this page as well. GenocideHeart 10:39, 6 March 2009 (EST)

I think that's fine, but don't be afraid to add it yourself! In the case you do screw up, we'll rephrase behind you ;) --SerCenKing 13:55, 6 March 2009 (EST)
Done. I hope I didn't break anything. GenocideHeart 19:23, 6 March 2009 (EST)

Conjurer Attack

I was sleeping at the beggar's bedsack that is right by Armand Christoph's spot in the Waterfront District. I waited for after midnight and woke up and the beggar was on the bed. He then got up and ran away. Then I hear "WHY...WONT...YOU...DIE??" and there's a Conjurer with a spawned scamp right there in the area! I've played Oblivion tons, though this is the first time I've tried out the Thieves Guild. What the heck?? Never seen any hostile in the Imperial City before, has something like this happened to anyone else? 68.205.81.87 18:07, 23 March 2009 (EDT)

You have probably encountered the Conjurer that is added by the Spell Tomes plug-in. You'll find more info on either of these two pages. --SerCenKing 03:52, 24 March 2009 (EDT)

Quest Log For Independent Thievery

Hea, i was playing oblivion GOTY on the pc and i just finished springheeled jack quest and went to the imperial city to wait for a message, after 3 days one didnt come so i checked my quest log and it says i havent sold enough goods, i went to the guy that deals with it in the imperial city and it read that i have sold 4450 golds worth yet the quest hadnt advanced, i sold some other stuff to see if this would work but it didnt, i used the name TGstolengoods to try and advance the quest, but the onli one it would let me do was 70. I dont know the quest log numbers so i was guessing so can anyone help me by giving me the number for after fencing 1000 gold or can someone put the log up on here please?

I am having the same problem and tried doing what your trying and it didn't work. By now I have forgotten the stage number, but I thought I might try to save you some time.

I know what to do typ in the console: setstage TGStolengoods 115

one time glitch?

with my Altmer character I joined the guild and got the quest Independent Thievery. Strangely enough I didn't have to fence anything I just randomly started each quest. Not sure if it makes a difference but I kept the note for 192 in-game days--Repeater 13:27, 20 April 2009 (EDT)

Skip tricky Thieves Guild missions

(Following moved here from Oblivion:Glitches/Proposed)

It is possible to skip missions in the Thieves Guild by killing somebody in the assignments. you have to pay a blood money fine to get back in the guild but if you're having real trouble with an assignments this can be helpful. I think this is a real glitch, but it might just be my game or even 360 (yes, this is on the Xbox 360). I don't think it works on some assignments though. And you also don't get the reward (i.e. money, important items that you want, maybe the Gray cowl).

lockpicks

Could anyone add some more information about (getting) lock picks? Thanks. — Unsigned comment by 67.183.28.2 (talk) on 9 May 2009

Shady Sam outside the Imperial City sells them. — Unsigned comment by 67.183.28.2 (talk) on 9 May 2009
Lockpicks aren't related directly to the guild, so locations are listed on the skill page instead. –RpehTCE 03:15, 9 May 2009 (EDT)

Tar-Meena not in Arch-Mage's Lobby after expulsion

Hey, saw this note and I just got done doing this quest. Tar-Meena was still in the lobby when this quest started. Granted, all I did was join the Mage's Guild to access ingredients and to take a bunch of stuff and sell it off to stores, so I did no quests at all. I imagine this explains it, but for further information... The reason I was expelled was for killing Fathis Aren during "The Arrow of Extrication" and this was on the 360.

i killed that guy to and i got well pissed. im stil tryin to get all the stuff the arche mage dude wants so i can talk to him about getting a cure for vampireism and its really hard to find 20 vampire dusts (the dadra haerts are easy just go in to your local oblivion gate and kill some dudes + get some awesome gear).

Cant Get Second Quest For The Grey Fox

Hey ive been waiting for days-weeks for the second messager to come meet me for the next quest (which i think is the arrow right?) Not sure this matters but in Bruma ive killed the owner of the house grey Fox is in so if that matters then i dont know what to do. I also cant see the First Messanger anywhere ive checked their house and places they hang out. Note: ive tried the Y,X,X,LB,RB,X,X getting kicked out of the guild and re-entering. PEASE HELP this is the only Guild i need to finish (well im almost done with the Fighters but not 100% more like ...40%...) so PLZ HELP! 24.144.36.127 02:17, 29 May 2009 (EDT)

How much have you fenced? If you've fenced too much, sometimes the next assignment won't come. I don't know a fix for this though. Nirvelli 02:08, 5 June 2009 (EDT)
Sometimes the messanger is the owner of the house that the Grey Fox is staying in. I would try breaking into the house and checking to see if the Grey Fox is there. If that doesn't work then I'm guessing you messed up the questline. (Gadianzero 13:15, 5 June 2009 (EDT))

No messenger coming help!

i just done the quest with the boots, fenced for 1000 gold and my journal didnt updated so i used setstage code, but now the messenger won't come! can some1 help me? — Unsigned comment by 62.51.165.233 (talk) on 14 June 2009.

Amusei might still be trying to find you. He is a bit slower than Methredhel in that aspect. If he doesn't come, you can try the console commands:
Good luck. --Timenn < talk > 15:25, 14 June 2009 (EDT)

Boots of Springheel Jack Mishap

i was going on my random killing spree of guards in the Imperial City (talos plaza) and i accidentally knocked a important guard unconscious. obviously he woke up after 15 secs or so, but after the third time knocking him unconscious i somehow pickpocketed him while he was in his unconscious state. Oddly enough this random guard was carrying the Boots of Springheel Jack! Aftr i took them i got a quest informing me that now that i have the boots i should visit the Gray Fox. The probems are that since im still on the quest before that, the gray fox only has common chat with me (rumors). if anyone knows how to fix this please respond. thank you.

BTW im on a xbox 360 — Unsigned comment by 72.220.149.40 (talk) on 9 July 2009

If the guard is essential, it's not a random, nameless, guard. It would help if you could provide the name of the guard you attacked. --Timenn-<talk> 11:22, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

I messed up pretty bad...

When I was playing Oblivion GOTY for the ps3, I struck one of the Thieves Guild members by accident, so I had to pay the blood price. Once I got back in the guild, I wasn't able to do anymore quests from the Doyens. They both said that they only train low rank thieves, and I'm a Bandit, I think. A quest update showed up and it said I should start fencing for Orrin, but he wouldn't let me because my rank is too low. Help!

i am confused...

alright, I have fenced over 7000 in gold and right now im at the independent thievery quest where you have to fence 1000 gold and when i sell stolen items to fathis ules, it never tells me about the new quest like it is supposed to about the ultimate heist. No matter what i do it doesn't do it. Someone please help! — Unsigned comment by 208.61.128.30 (talk) on 22 July 2009

My advice is too wait in the Imperial City. Since you have to be contacted by a Thieves Guild member, they have to travel to you, and they start out in the IC. --Elliot(T-C) 02:25, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
The confusion is that it's not Fathis that gives you the quest, it's Amusei. As Elliot says, wait in the Imperial City and Amusei should turn up eventually. –rpehTCE 07:02, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Major Problem with Fences

I'm playing oblivion: GOTY for PC and in it i fenced about 515 Gold to Dar Jee in Leyawiin in the early portion of my game, after that i didn't fence until presently, when i became a shadow-foot in rank and unlocked Orrin, but now that I'm trying to fence again (to unlock the higher level missions and ranks) i found that my inventory page (both in regular and fencing mode) no longer has the red hand markings indicating a stolen item, in addition when i sell something to the fence that is stolen (even if its not indicated as such) the Amount Fenced pops up but the money counter doesn't increase whatsoever no matter how many items i fence. I've tried all of the other fence's that I've managed to unlock and the same issue occurs with all of them, including Dar Jee. I don't know if it helps, but i used the console for God Mode, Unlock, Kill, and Fog of War constantly, as well as Force Level Advance (15 times), and the off-hand resurrect command, in addition i have the quest "Independent Thievery" mapped but nothing happens when i do (doesn't direct me to any fences), also, my game version is 1.1.425. Any help on this would be thoroughly appreciated. Thanks in Advance, 68.42.242.236 03:46, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Independent thievery problem

I just finished the arrow of extracation quest on 2 seperate accounts and everything went right except my independent thievery quest didn't update so I can't do the rest of the assignments. The grey fox left the house. Amusei is in the leyawin jail. And I'm playing on xbox 360. None of the stuff I have read on here is working. — Unsigned comment by 96.253.176.194 (talk) at 00:33 on 5 August 2009

Khafiz

"Note that for Thieves Guild members, any items solds to one of these unofficial fences will not count toward the Independent Thievery quest."

Is this true for Khafiz? I sold him loads of stolen goods before and joined the Thieves Guild, and then when I fianlly joined and went to Ongar to sell some stuff I already had 2000+ worth fenced already. I hadn't used a Thieves Guild fence before that. Legoless 16:58, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

Actually selling stuff to Khafiz *does* count. The Amount Fenced prompt just doesn't show up. I'll fix the article. –rpehTCE 20:12, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

fathis ules problem

I've completed the thieves guild questline on a few different run throughs, but fathis ules never lets me buy or sell anything to him. I can find him at various different times of day but there is never a barter option. Any ideas on how to get him to sell to me? — Unsigned comment by Pancake (talkcontribs)

There are a number of bugs with Fathis - see his NPC page for details. Also, if you have completed Sins of the Father by returning the blade to Laythe Wavrick, you can no longer use Fathis as a fence. --Gaebrial 07:33, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

Gray Fox Messenger won't show up - I think it's because I was kicked out?

I've fenced over 700 gold and have been waiting a very long time for a messenger - Amusei, I believe. After I had fenced 700 gold and was supposed to wait I got kicked out and re-entered again. I think somehow this has messed it up, because even if I talk to Amusei myself, he doesn't talk to me about my quest. I've tried the remedies that this page offers to fix the bug, but to no avail. Could it be because I was kicked out? Also, when I make this my active quest, there's a red marker on the map leading to the fence in Anvil. Why?

EDIT: I read in another article that he's supposed to be actively looking for you - which he's not. He's in the Waterfront and never leaves. Is it true this cannot be fixed on consoles? Or will he eventually talk to me if I wait long enough? This is the last guild I need to complete! I'm getting desperate. — Unsigned comment by 98.71.196.128 (talk) on September 27, 2009

Question about deletion

Is there any particular reason why on September 2, the user Dstebbins deleted my mention that there are no known Orc members in the Thieves Guild? Because he claims it was "the exact opposite of noteworthy" (which is debatable as some people enjoy playing races that aren't present in their faction of choice), yet an identical mention (not by me, by the way) in the Mages Guild page has been left alone. If such mentions are going to be deleted, let's be consistent about it. Either keep all of them or delete all of them, or it will just confuse would-be editors. GenocideHeart 11:11, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

I agree that we should be consistent about it. What I would say is re-add the information, simply because it's easier to have the information and decide to remove it than it is to not have it and have to go looking for it. And having had it pointed out, hopefully if it's removed, it'll be removed across the board. —Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 01:58, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
