Deleted Text[edit]

I have deleted the following text from the page given that it appears to be erroneous --Nephele 00:49, 22 December 2006 (EST)

Resistance to magical attacks (the manual makes mention of this but there is no evidence to support that claim. This appears to be a residual statement left over from Morrowind and does not appear to actually have been implemented in Oblivion at all - more testing is needed)
There should be a mention somewhere on the page that the fact is erroneous (given that it is mentioned in both the manual and loading screen tips), rather than just removing the text altogether. --Quetzilla (too lazy to log in)
Good point. I've added a note to the Notes section, at least regarding the loading screen tip. On the other hand, I can't see where it's supposedly mentioned in the manual. In the Xbox 360 verison of the manual, the willpower blurb says "Affects how quickly you regenerate Magicka, and how much Fatigue you have. Governs the skills of Destruction, Alteration, and Restoration". I can't find my PC manual at the moment, but I haven't noticed differences in basic text between them before. And I can't see anywhere else in the manual where it's mentioned, either. --NepheleTalk 01:52, 8 January 2008 (EST)

Magicka Regeneration[edit]

88.246.57.173's edit regarding Willpower vs. Intelligence is not accurate.

From manipulation of the magic regeneration formula we can get that a change of one unit in WIL will result in a change in RegenRate of:

deltaRegenRate(WIL) = k * ReturnMult * TotalMagicka

Manipulating the same original formula another way we can determine that a change of one unit in INT will result in a change in RegenRate of:

deltaRegenRate(INT) = 2 * k * ReturnBase + 2 * k * ReturnMult * WIL

Where ReturnBase = 0.75, ReturnMult = 0.02, k = 0.01, and also

TotalMagicka = (2 * INT + c) given c = sum of{all active magicka fortification effects}
and given WIL > 0, INT > 0, c >= 0

So in numbers you would get an increase in regeneration rate of:

4*10-4 * INT + 2*10-4 * c

for each increase of 1 WIL
And you would get an increase in regeneration rate of:

150*10-4 +  4*10-4 * WIL

for each increase of 1 INT

To find which is greater, simply equate the two and solve for (for example) WIL. You will discover that optimally:

WIL = (TotalMagicka – 75) / 2

In other words the best magicka regeneration rate for a given distribution of finite WIL and INT results when:

WIL = INT + c / 2 – 37.5

As is readily apparent, 88.246.57.173's rule of thumb is correct only in the special case where c = 0, meaning there are no active magicka fortification effects from race, birthsign, enchanted items, spells, or potions. At any other time, every change of 2 active (or constant) fortify magicka is equivalent to 1 INT for the purpose of optimal WIL calculation. For example an Altmer born under the Mage has an effective 75 additional INT and the relationship will be exactly the opposite of that described by our very helpful anonymous contributor such that this particular mage should increase WIL until it is more than 37 points higher than INT if she wants the fastest regeneration rate available.

Hey, thanks for the clear new formatting and for using my wording for the Intelligence vs. Willpower example! I like how you pointed out that the recharge rate is only one of the factors in choosing between these two stats.
A minor reservation: perhaps the use of "at low levels..." "at high levels..." might confuse some readers? It may not be obvious that it refers to low or high maximum available magicka and not player level. What wording could we use that would be clearer?

Past 100[edit]

I find it odd to note that all the other attribute pages inform the reader as to what the attribute does and does not affect after increasing over 100. As willpower is in the Oghma Infinium, I think it is valid information.— Unsigned comment by 12.206.59.238 (talk) on 26 June 2008

And this attribute page has the information, too: "The regeneration rate will continue to increase if your willpower is increased past 100." Raising Magicka vs Raising Willpower to affect Magicka Regeneration[edit]

Man that's a long heading. So I put "Considering max stating a character (using sigil stones), it is best for your regeneration rate to increase your total Magicka - sigil stones have the best enchantments of the game - +50 Magicka or +12 Willpower. A "Normal" character (no applicable sign or racial bonuses) with maxed intelligence/maxed willpower will have a regen rate about 5.5. When you compare this to combinations of +12 Willpower or +50 Magicka - having a max Magicka of 650 (with remaining 100 willpower, 650 number being 200 Mag from 100 Int, plus 9 pieces of enchantable eq * 50) yields a regen rate of 17.9 vs going in the other direction with a max willpower of 208 (with remaining 200 Magicka) yields a regen rate of 9.8. Using the Mage sign and High Elf races would yield regen rates of 23.4 (Max Magicka) and 19.6 (Max Willpower)." into the willpower page, but I'm not sure it reads right, for example I used the word enchantable. Really was my intent to prove through formula that raising Magicka had a greater affect on your Magicka regen rate than raising Willpower. What does "considering max stating a character" mean? Why does it say "remaining 100 willpower" and "remaining 200 magicka? Remaining from what? Out of curiousity, what would happen if a character has his willpower reduced to 0? If I hit a mage with the Blade of Woe 4 times how slowly would he regenerate magicka? 72.245.29.145 23:07, 30 March 2009 (EDT)

Character Building[edit]

I have around 120 intel and willpower. i am a level 36 with 360 Magicka. i was wondering if i should enchant a hood and a pair of shoes with ethier Willpower(+10 each), intel(+10 each), or fortify magicka? Or should i just mix and match? Help would be great!Georgeguy 08:22, 8 June 2009 (EDT)

Decreasing Willpower[edit]

I while ago, my Intelligence decreased from 100 to 98 for no apparent reason. Recently, it went back to 100, but now my Willpower is 98 instead of 100. I don't have any diseases, the Alters of the Nine don't fix this, I haven't been to jail recently, and I have no items in my inventory that would do this. Is this a known bug?
