Majorn the Ancient

Majorn the Ancient is a Nord vampire and the patriarch of Wittestadr. His servant Tunus performs menial tasks for him, such as delivering messages. His son, Valeric, blames him for the vast amounts of bloodfiends roaming the area, although Majorn believes that his son's philosophy of depending on animal blood is far more dangerous. If you side with Valeric, you will have to fight Majorn in the Wittestadr crypts. He will transform into a gargoyle during combat.

If you side with him during the related quest, he can grant you the Life Stealer Active Effect, which gives you a 10% chance to heal you for 20% of your max health on hit in Wittestadr. You can come back any time after The Better of Two Evils to have the effect reapplied. It does not last outside of Wittestadr.

Dialogue[edit]

The Better of Two Evils[edit]

"You must be curious as to why I summoned you.
I want to give you an opportunity to learn my son's true intentions. His fire is admirable, but he does more harm than good."
What do you mean?
"Valeric opposes me because I embrace my true nature. I take what is mine without thought or hesitation.
Valeric questions everything and tries to fix our people. He deprives them of what they need to survive while telling them there is a better way."
And how does that work out?
"When they finally taste fresh blood, the fever takes hold. They become wild, savage monsters more dangerous than anything I create.
Many call me evil, but at least I do not feed indiscriminately. I feed to survive. I feed to increase my power."
What do you want from me?
"Valeric must be stopped. My people may kill hundreds, but when his followers lose control they kill thousands more.
I hide nothing from you. I am not a good man, nor a good father, but I shall not kill my only son. For that, I need your help."
Very well. Valeric could do more harm than he realizes.
"Valeric will use the hunters in the area as he attempted to use you. They must be destroyed.
Take this rune. Use it on one of my bloodfiends. It will follow your commands. Make it do your bidding. Take it and slaughter the hunters."
You're a monster. You have to be stopped.
"If that is your decision, so be it. After you leave here, know that I am your enemy. When next we meet I will tear out your heart and drink your blood.
And that shall still be better than if one of Valeric's followers becomes crazed and attacks you."

There's also a third option, which leads to the same choice:

You just expect me to take your word and kill your son?
"I could crush you, yet I do not. You need to understand.
The two who follow my son are all that remain. The others lost control, slaughtered villages in their mindless rage. They had to be, how do I say it, put down? Such a waste."
Valeric never mentioned that.
"Of course he didn't. Why would he tell his new ally that he was the cause of such rampant slaughter?
I grow tired of these questions. I have told you what you have asked, now you must answer me. Will you assist me or shall we be enemies?"
Fine, I'll help you. Valeric can't continue to do this.
"Valeric will use the hunters in the area as he attempted to use you. They must be destroyed.
Take this rune. Use it on one of my bloodfiends. It will follow your commands. Make it do your bidding. Take it and slaughter the hunters."
I can't help you. Those monsters out there, you did that.
"If that is your decision, so be it. After you leave here, know that I am your enemy. When next we meet I will tear out your heart and drink your blood.
And that shall still be better than if one of Valeric's followers becomes crazed and attacks you."

If you chose to side with Majorn and you speak with him again:

"Take one of my bloodfiends and kill the hunters before my son can gain their trust.
And let this be a sample of the power I can give you."

If you oppose Majorn and speak with him again:

"(?)"

In Wittestadr Crypts, if you chose to oppose Majorn:

Majorn: "(?)"

Returning from killing the hunters:

"Ah, the smell of fresh blood. It's intoxicating. I only wish I had been the one to drain the life from their bodies.
But this is not about me. This is about sending a message. And Valeric has heard it, loud and clear."
And what now? The hunters are dead. Valeric is no longer a threat.
"Ah, but that is where you are wrong.
Valeric will continue to spend every moment of his existence attempting to end mine. I grow tired of it. I have shown you a small glimpse of the power I can give you. Help me and I will give you even more."
What do you want me to do?
"My son hides in the crypts beneath this manor. Use the trap door in the next room and go to him. Then end this.
Make his death quick, if you would. He is my son, after all. I do not want him to suffer."
And this power you would give me?
"It is the power to steal life, the power to consume an enemy's energy and make it your own.
This blessing I give you. Do not waste it."

Speaking to him again before killing Valeric:

"Find my son and end his life. And do it quickly.
The power I gave should aid you in the coming battle. Valeric may not be as strong as I am, but my blood runs through his veins. Underestimate him at your own peril."

Returning after killing Valeric:

"So. It is finished."
The deed is done, just as you asked.
"It isn't right for a father to thank the murderer of his son. Instead, I shall simply say that I appreciate what you've done."
What happens now?
"I will stay and mourn my son before I return to my clan.
I knew in my heart that Valeric would never abandon the path he selected, but I never stopped trying to change his mind. At least I can find comfort in that fact."
And what about me?
"I give you this as payment for services rendered. You are strong and I respect that.
Feel free to visit as often as you like. I shall happily provide you with power whenever you wish."

Post-quest:

"You have done a great service for me. For that reason, I shall not feast upon you.
Not this day, at least."
Can you grant me more power?
"Of course. I always honor my promises.
Enjoy the power!"

Lifeline[edit]

"If you need more power, you need only to ask.
Otherwise, leave me to my solitude."
I need your help.
"Some believe that to perform a task for another deserves a favor in return. I am not such a person.
I'll listen to your request, but I make no promises."
King Jorunn was poisoned. I need your blood to save him.
"My blood? You want to turn the King into one of us?
Ha! Perhaps I misjudged you. We think alike, you and I. Yes, take my blood. Soon this land will bow to the vampires!"
I'm trying to heal him.
"Of course you are. Of course. That's your story and you're sticking to it.
Take my blood. Turn your King. Let him become one of us. I look forward to seeing how this plays out!"

Notes[edit]

  • During Lifeline, you cannot ask Majorn or his son to lend their blood to save King Jorunn before completing The Better of Two Evils. The dialogue option prompting you to ask them for the favor only appears after the Wittestadr objective is complete.
  • As explained by Rala during The Better of Two Evils, Majorn belongs to the Volkihar clan of vampires.
  • The Volkihar Clan featured in Dawnguard
