Merien Sellan is a Breton and the father of Tamien Sellan. During the Bloodthorn Cult attack on the settlement of Eagle's Brook, Merien conjured up a pocket plane that he used to help people escape, but due to a malfunction he was unable to reopen it from his side.

The White Mask of Merien[edit]

Perform the ritual in the Sellan House correctly and a vision of Merien will appear:

"You … cast my spell? The masking ritual? But why?"
Your son sent me here to cast your spell. He should be here shortly.
"Tamien, here? I hoped he would return.
There's no time for that right now, though. We need to act, before the Bloodthorn cultists cause more damage."

Cutting Off the Source[edit]

If you don't pick up the subsequent quest, he will say "We have to stop the Bloodthorn!"

Speaking to him:

"Tamien, my son. He's come back? I'd hoped I'd see him before the end. Quickly, though, there's no time. We must act!"
What do you want me to do?
"The Bloodthorn have been draining my essence to fuel their necromantic rituals. They're transporting the animated dead from the docks. They've sent zombies as far north as Cath Bedraud, and Daggerfall is next."
How can we stop them?
"I'm imprisoned in a pocket plane of Oblivion. I think I can use the magic I still possess to collapse the plane and end the ritual.
But in case I fail, you need to burn the Bloodthorn's boats. Don't let any more zombies leave the village."
I'll stop the Bloodthorn.

Merien will fade away.

If you ignore Merien's order to kill the Bloodthorns and go into Desolation's End, he'll be peeved that you chose to rescue him and put the entire village in danger:

"What were you thinking, coming in here after me? The Bloodthorn will escape!"
Tamien thought you were too valuable to lose.
"My son said that? I'm sorry. I didn't mean to berate you. I can still collapse this plane. The Bloodthorn may escape, but we'll stop the necromantic ritual here and now. I'll follow you back to the portal."

Speaking to him before you escape:

"I'm sorry I shouted at you. Let's just get out of here. The portal should be right where you left it."

Back in Eagle's Brook, he'll apologize:

"Thank you for freeing me. It wasn't the choice I would have made, but I appreciate being able to see my son once more.
I'll do everything I can to make this right."

If you went through with Merien's plan and Tamien attempted to rescue him, Merien will not survive the ordeal and upon your return to his house, you'll find Tamien kneeling over his father's body.
