Saryne Dralen

Saryne Dralen is a Dark Elf trapped inside the Vaults of Madness. In life, he was a noble and the Master of Coin for Wayrest and a good friend of Gasteau Chamrond. This friendship led him to help ruin Dutheil's reputation, which put the broken artisan on the path to become the Mad Architect. The Architect took revenge and imprisoned him within the Vault of Despair, forcing him into an ironic punishment of trying to balance "impossible ledgers".

In the Vault of Despair after Death's Head is killed, Gasteau Chamrond will run into the room and Saryne will ask you to destroy his body.

Gasteau Chamrond: "Saryne! I've brought help!"
Saryne Dralen: "This is my chance! Release me from this body, please!"
<Saryne's body is destroyed.>
"Thank you! Thank you...I thought I would never be free."
"Gasteau—you look good, considering. It's been ages."
Gasteau Chamrond: "It has been. Are you well?"
Saryne Dralen: "Hardly. I think we've made a mistake."
Gasteau Chamrond: "I regret nothing—look at what Dutheil's become."
Saryne Dralen: "We've created a monster. All these souls he tortures for the Daedra."
Gasteau Chamrond: "Don't ever—Dutheil, the Mad Architect, did this. Not us."

After this Saryne can be spoken to to find out history and his connection to the Mad Architect.

"I won't forget what you're done for me."
Are you alright?
"I'm fine. I'm dead–but fine otherwise.
I take it you're looking for a way out? The Architect never allows those who wander in to just leave."
Gastaeu [sic] said he knew a way out.
"He tells the truth. We both know the way, but we have a mutual friend I'd like to free before we take our leave.
With your permission, of course."
Who?
"Reynelle Derone. She was brought here by the Architect just like Gasteau and myself.
It's likely she's been imprisoned like I was. When last I saw her—by the Divines, it must have been years ago—she was taken to the Vault up ahead."
I'll find her and free her.
"Reynelle was a kindly one—she entered the Vaults with us, and I'd like her to leave with us, if the Mad Architect hasn't scattered her soul across Oblivion."
Who are you?/Tell me about yourself.
"I am Saryne Dralen, noble of House Dralen and Master of Coin."
Why did the Architect imprison you here?
"Gasteau was a good friend, and valued business partner. So when he asked me to, I helped him discredit the Mad Architect's reputation.
It destroyed the man—Dutheil was his true name. And everything you see here was Dutheil's revenge."
Why did you ruin his reputation?
"He was a rival artisan and bitter enemy of Gasteau. And that made him my enemy. I spoke with every noble in Wayrest to ensure that Dutheil would never work again.
I did not know that our scheme would cause … such mayhem."
What is the room?
"This is the Vault of Despair, where I and my fellow captors are forced to forever balance impossible ledgers.
It began as a torture crafted specially for me, but the Mad Architect has been busy collecting souls for the Daedra ever since."
Impossible ledgers? Why?
"I despaired every moment of it.
I was a manager of coin in life. To me, a ledger that never balances is like an itch that never scratches. It nearly drove me mad until you freed me."
That's all they did to you?
"Well, no. I can't say that. Some days, they would lash me with whips of flame.
Honestly, I preferred that to the ledgers."

After finding Reynelle:

"All that's left is to face the Architect. He's defended and he's powerful, but if he can be defeated ….
You've made miracles happen today, my friend."

Speaking with him after talking to Reynelle:

"Good luck in this final battle, my friend. You've proven yourself formidable, but the Architect wields Daedric power."

At the Chasm:

"The Mad Architect waits below."
What is this place?
"I don't know the name, Gasteau might, but its fascinating to see what can be accomplished unfettered by the rules of the natural world."

Once the Mad Architect is defeated, Saryne and his friends will find they still are unable to leave.

Gasteau Chamrond: "He's gone! He's gone–but nothing's happening."
"It seems the Mad Architect's destruction did not allow us to step from this plane. Unfortunate, but we'll have to make do. He mastered this place, mastered the Daedra, somehow. Perhaps we can do the same."
Reynelle Derone: "But what do we do? Where do we go?"
Saryne Dralen: "We can't stay here. Not like this."
Gasteau Chamrond: "I'll figure something out. I always do."

When the Mad Architect is killed, before you've talked to Gasteau he will say:

"The Mad Architect is gone! We've won!"

Saryne can be spoken to for a final time.

"Thank you, my friend. For all you've done.
But it seems our hardship isn't over yet."
