Gates?[edit]

I don't really see the need for a bunch of pages about unnamed gates and passes, whose function as border crossings is evident. Aren't we supposed to come to consensus before drastically changing our approach to things? But aside from that, if these pages really need to exist (I would say they don't), can't we list them at Gates, along with the ones that already have pages (due to the fact that they are named locations)? --Enodoc (talk) 20:58, 7 September 2016 (UTC)

I'm not convinced separate pages are necessary, but I think it's good to have a list of places where zones can be travelled between naturally, especially with the release of One Tamriel. I think we should keep them separate from ON:Gates though, due to the fact that these locations are so minor and include things like boats. I guess there would be no harm adding most of them to the Gates list though. —Legoless (talk) 22:13, 7 September 2016 (UTC)
Boats (etc) would already be covered by Transport (which of course will need expanding with One Tamriel). I'm not sure how much use a list of zone crossings would be, considering all the relevant details can already be added in the text of the zone page (see, eg, Stormhaven). Such info would seem more useful on the zone pages themselves, rather than on an arbitrary list that people won't even know exists. --Enodoc (talk) 22:45, 7 September 2016 (UTC)

() Now that One Tamriel is out, we can have a look at this again. I can see the benefit of having the list, but not the individual pages of unnamed locations. So I would suggest we remove the boats and carts from this page, scrap the individual pages of gates and bridges and move their primary details into sections here, and then transclude this onto Transport. --Enodoc (talk) 10:43, 11 October 2016 (UTC)

I think one of the more interesting things that will come out of this page are the gates that currently lead nowhere, as they provide hints about where future expansions are likely to appear. The gates in southern Shadowfen, northern Reaper's March, or northeastern Bangkorai (or another in southwest Eastmarch I haven't added yet) aren't likely to be covered anywhere else. The gates into Wrothgar and Craglorn may have seemed similarly uninteresting when the game was first released, but they turned out to be very significant. With the addition of Navigators, things have changed somewhat - it might make sense to remove docks and have them handled exclusively on the Transport page instead, though some things are still notable, e.g. the boats to Hew's Bane or the Gold Coast. — TheRealLurlock (talk) 18:39, 11 October 2016 (UTC)
There is a gate in southwest Eastmarch? I've never seen any there. --Vordur Steel-Hammer (TINV1K) 20:54, 11 October 2016 (UTC)
Right, one of the main reasons I came down on the side of keeping the list overall is because of the inaccessible gates and their potential destinations. I don't see a need for every separate gate to have its own page though, as it's just unnecessary extra clicking for presenting info that can all be in one place (like the regions of Cyrodiil don't have their own pages and are all listed on their respective territories, eg Amber Woodland). Beyond that, you had to literally invent names for the gates in order to make the pages, essentially inventing locations that don't exist, which I don't agree with. It's the individual pages that I'm most against, not the usefulness of the list page overall.
I just rode around the entire border of Eastmarch looking for unmarked gates; nothing stands out as a potential border. I've found:
  • A gated cave in a cliff underneath Fort Amol, possibly Darkwater Pass
  • The entrance to a Dwemer ruin, just west of Lost Knife Cave, near the "lost in ruins" skyshard (no equivalent in Skyrim)
  • The main entrance to Skuldafn, in Bitterblade's Camp
  • The main entrance to Direfrost Keep
Notable by their absense, however, are the Dunmeth Pass and the trails westwards into Whiterun (up the White River) and the Pale (up the River Yorgrim).

Yeah, I know about all these. There should be a few more gated caves, I remember that one was around Jorunn's Stand. As for the missing border crossings to Whiterun and the Pale - I guess they'll just be added to the zone like the Merchant's Gate in Bangkorai if these holds are ever made. --Vordur Steel-Hammer (TINV1K) 23:14, 11 October 2016 (UTC)
The Eastmarch gate in question is this one: (image) (near Lost Knife Cave). There is no Dwemer ruin anywhere near that location in Skyrim, so we have no clue as to what it could be. It could be an intended entrance into Blackreach maybe? I think the one at Fort Amol is an exit from some quest? I forget. — TheRealLurlock (talk) 05:16, 13 October 2016 (UTC)

() So does anyone have any oppositions to the specific proposal of consolidating all of these into one page, for ease of reference and to remove invented place names? If not, I'll start working on that soon. --Enodoc (talk) 15:38, 8 December 2016 (UTC)
