Viola Giordano

Viola Giordano is an Imperial citizen who has a house in Windhelm. She pines after Captain Lonely-Gale, but her feelings towards him are unrequited, as he spurns her advances every time she asks. After raising Viola's disposition, she becomes a potential candidate for marriage.

Viola's outfit consists of clothes and a pair of boots. She is equipped with an iron dagger and carries around her house key as well as a selection of common loot and gold.

She wakes up early at 5am and heads out into the city to start her daily patrol, looking for the Butcher. At 7am she takes a break to have breakfast for an hour before resuming her patrol duties. After a long day of patrolling the city, Viola heads to Candlehearth Hall at 6pm and stays there for the remainder of the afternoon. At 10pm she heads home and will immediately go to bed after a long day.

Dialogue[edit]

Before the quest Blood on the Ice is completed, Viola is scared to be in the city, and her greetings will reflect this:

"Be on the lookout. The Butcher could be around any corner!"
"After what happened to those other women, I'm worried about my own safety."
"Women murdered time and again, and all the guards care about is the war."
"Be careful! That murderer could be anywhere, and anyone."

As long as Captain Lonely-Gale isn't nearby, Viola may also say

"Captain Lonely-Gale has been avoiding me, I just know it."

Once the Butcher is taken care of, Viola will be grateful:

"The streets are safer now, thanks to you."

Conversations[edit]

While patrolling the city, Viola may try to speak to Captain Lonely-Gale, he will always try to get rid of her as soon as possible:

Viola: "Captain, captain!"
Lonely-Gale: "What is it now, Viola?"
Viola: "Did you notice that the snow settles in a different direction near the murder sites?"
Lonely-Gale: "Don't you think all your tramping around there investigating might have something to do with it?"
Viola: "I... well. Perhaps. But still! It's curious."

Viola: "Captain Lonely-Gale! I've been looking for you everywhere!"
Lonely-Gale: "And now you've found me. Can I help you?"
Viola: "Have you thought about my invitation?"
Lonely-Gale: "I've thought about it, but I'm not sure it's such a good idea."
Viola: "Oh, I see. Is it still too soon?"
Lonely-Gale: "Yes, I think that must be it. My wife hasn't been gone that long, after all. Ask me again on another day."
Viola: "I'm sorry to be such a bother. We'll talk another time."

Viola: "Do you think those dark elves had anything to do with the murders? The attacks all happened at night, after all."
Lonely-Gale: "Viola, dark elves sleep just like the rest of us."
Viola: "You wouldn't think it from the racket that Cornerclub makes."
Lonely-Gale: "I'm sure the guards have the matter well in hand. Now, if you'll excuse me."

Viola: "Hello, captain! Can you spare a moment? I heard something the other day that I wanted to share with you."
Lonely-Gale: "What did you hear?"
Viola: "It was an old Nord proverb. It said, the best way to get over the loss of a lover is to find a new one."
Lonely-Gale: "I didn't lose a lover, Viola, I lost my wife. It's not the same thing."
Viola: "Well, if it works in the one case, why not the other? Don't you want to at least give it a try?"
Lonely-Gale: "No, I really don't. It'll be a while before I'm ready for that. I'll be on my way now."

Quest-Related Events[edit]

Blood on the Ice[edit]

During the quest, you can ask her about the Butcher. She will explain:

What can you tell me about the "Butcher"?
"I've been following him for months now. Well, not actually following. Trying to find him. The guards won't help. The people won't help. I'm the only one who thinks he can be caught."
How can the rest of the people not care?
"Oh, they care all right. Just none of them thinks to do anything about it. They say I'm just snooping around bothering people, but I'm trying to save lives!"
Why can't the guards help?
"They say they're too busy with the war -- I say what good is winning a war if we're still terrorized by one of our own?"
I found this poster in Hjerim.
"I've been trying to put those up around the city, to warn people. Have them keep their eyes open. But someone keeps taking them down. You say you found it in Hjerim? Friga's old place. Let's go have a look around there. I've got a feeling about this one."

Once you meet her there, you will begin to investigate the house for any clues. She will also comment about one of the cabinets within the house:

"Look here. There's something strange about this cabinet."

Investigating it further, you will find a secret room along with the Butcher Journal #1. When you show Viola the journal, she will immediately ask you about its contents:

It sounds like the court mage has been experimenting.
"Wuunferth. There have been rumors swirling about him for years. As long as I can remember. But he's a dangerous man. It's why they call him "the Unliving." I wouldn't approach him directly. This information needs to go straight to the steward. He'll listen to you."

If you also show her the strange amulet, she will say:

"Nothing anybody I know would wear. Maybe ask one of the Dark Elves, they usually have some kind of rag falling off of them. The one who sells things, what's his name. Oh, yes! Revyn Sadri. Maybe he'd know something."

That Was Always There[edit]

During the quest, you may choose to speak to Viola about the stolen ring:

Revyn Sadri gave me this ring. I think it's yours.
"Oh, really? So that Dark Elf took my ring. So typical of his kind. I think the Jarl should hear about this. Maybe double his taxes. No, triple them. That should teach those people a lesson. You deserve something for sniffing out that thief. Here."

She will then reward you with a leveled amount of gold.

Rumors[edit]

  • Viola is pretty infamous in the city for her flyers and investigations, if you ask a guard about the Butcher, they'll say: "Uf. Have you been talking to Viola Giordano? She posts those all over the city, and someone keeps taking them down. Ask her about it if you want an earful."
  • Jorleif, the city's steward, is also not a fan of Viola's flyers and will tell you: "More of those things. Bah. Viola Giordano's been putting them all around the city. Frankly, whoever keeps taking them down should get a medal."
  • Calixto Corrium is just annoyed and will tell you "Oh, good, more of those. Did you know Viola Giordano wanted to put one of them on my front door? "Everyone will see it!" she said. Of course! That was my problem with it. If you want to ask her about them, good luck. But I'm not going near her."
  • Arivanya, the wife of Windhelm's stablemaster Ulundil will defend her and say "If the guards would listen to Viola, they'd have caught the Butcher by now."
  • Captain Lonely-Gale may assume she sent you to speak with him and will greet you with "Did Viola send you to bother me?" He'll also mention her as one of the city's prominent citizens, albeit not in a good light "Oh, and that busybody Viola Giordano. She's got her nose in everyone's business, which I guess is one way of being prominent."

In addition, during the quest That Was Always There, Revyn Sadri will warn you "It's not that easy. She'd go to the Jarl if she knew I was even remotely involved. You have to get it to her some other way. Look, it's dangerous, but if you sneak the ring into her house. Put in a dresser or something. I will make it worth your while."

Notes[edit]

Bugs[edit]

  • If Viola dies before completing Blood on the Ice, the quest may not start or will be impossible to finish.
  • It is possible to remove Butcher Journal #1 from the player's inventory if the house is broken into and the book found before following Viola. She must see the book in the inventory for the quest to proceed.
