Birna and Ranmir just stand outside the shop[edit]

I'm having the bug for which Birna and Ranmir just stay outside the shop, as they where when I first entered Winterhold. Birna has not the option to trade. I resetted the AI, killed and resurrected them both and tried other commands (but I don't know if they actually could do something, so I won't write them). Anyone knows what to do or what is worth to try? Thanks.

P.S. Should I write this in another page's discussion? Because it concerns both Birna and Ranmir... Cridus 22:24, 1 December 2011 (UTC)

I moved the following contribution by 173.31.237.100 from the article:
Using the console you can still trade with her if this occurs by doing the following: Wait until business hours 8am-8pm. Open the console and select the door to her shop, and use the "unlock" command to unlock the door, but don't go in. Then select Birna, and go in the shop. Then use the command "moveto player" this will Move Birna into the shop, where she can then be traded with. If you encountered this bug, she will still walk back outside and resume standing there with Ranmir afterwards.

Thanks! I will try! Cridus 20:33, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
Edit: I tried and Birna just says "You should not be here."... I tried at every hour of the business period... Cridus 01:54, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
I could not trade with Birna but was able to complete the Helm of Winterhold Colcetion quest by:
  1. Entering the Yngol Barrow
  2. Opening the Console and typing 'player.additem 000B634C 1' (This will add Coral Dragon Claw to your inventory)
  3. Aligning the door rings correctly and then unlock the door normally
  4. Collect the Helm for the chest inside; completing Helm of Winterhold
I noticed the 'Exit' gate button would not work for me McKenn'r 17:05, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
The strange thing is that, somehow, I obtained the claw. I really don't remember how I got it. The first time I went to Winterhold, it was attacked by a frost dragon. Maybe that was the cause of Birna and Ranmir's block.
For the fact that the claw was mysteriously added to my inventory (in fact, Birna never talked to me about it), no quest activated for me. I got to the Yngol Barrow casually and cleared it without any problem, but no quest was activated\updated.
I really don't remember if Birna said something different from her usual speech, that first time.
Anyway, I will double-check for the quest. Maybe I only remember wrongly, but it's unlikely. Cridus 17:51, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

() This is totally annoying, she is dead after dragon attack, and I dont have some older savegame, and always when I load the oldest and arrive there, a dragon attacks and kills her... — Unsigned comment by 87.155.91.21 (talk) at 20:15 on 13 February 2012

Birna and Ranmir get stuck outside if their initial argument scene gets interrupted by a dragon attack. They can be sent back to their normal routines using the console command: "StopQuest 000B2174". Cdcooley 01:47, 10 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, it worked! Now I'll try to reset the quest. Cridus 12:17, 10 March 2012 (UTC)
Worked for me too even though I haven't had any dragon attacks yet. When I first got to town Birna was outside talking with Ranmir, but I still had the option to buy the dragon claw. Ilwae (talk) 01:15, 9 November 2012 (GMT)

() Just had this happen to me today. I think it happened by fast travelling to Winterhold and shortly after a Dragon attacked it which seems to cease NPCs from carrying on with thier roles. — Unsigned comment by Ellwood (talkcontribs) at 01:17 on 7 September 2012‎

Found a workaround for this problem. In the console, type "startscene 000B2175". They will start their initial conversation and go back to their places afterwards. Don't know what the long term side effect may be but I doubt that there'll be any. Wontial (talk) 22:13, 27 July 2013 (GMT)
I had arrived to winterhold on carriage and a dragon attacked just as I walked near the inn. I had both Birna and Ranmir stuck after the dragon fight. Tried the solution posted by Wontial (talk) and it worked! thanks! Rusty_Razor 13:13, 20 December 2015 (GMT)

() Happened to me. Ranmir died to a dragon attack just as their outdoor scene concluded. I realized this too late, and Birna got stuck standing there outside the door. Because he was dead, other workarounds didn't work for me. what did:

Clicking Birna in the concole and typing 'Disable', then moving or breaking into the shop and using the command "player.placeatme 0001C18C"
Once inside, Birna resumed normal function for me! Hope this helps. Rhou 20:13 August 8th 2017 (EST)

Quest not triggered[edit]

I purchased the coral dragon claw from Birna, but no quest was triggered.

I went to Yngol Barrow anyway and cleared it,still the quest did not trigger.

--Jdguellich 19:15, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

I don't remember how I got the coral claw from Birna (she is stuck out of the shop, in my game) but the quest didn't trigger to me, too. Cridus 21:16, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
Me three. PC, all patches to date. I stopped by the shop on the way to Under Saarthal. Purchased in shop. I'll go back a save and try again later. Goodness gracious, this game is buggy!
--DayDreamer 01:59, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
That's an easy one: there is no quest. I guess Bethesda simply forgot to implement it or it wasn't planned in the first place. It makes sense, if you think about it. Why should Birna reward you for checking out an ancient tomb that she has no interest in? If Skyrim used a "traditional" experience system you could gain EXP for it. But since it hasn't there's nothing that would justify an additional quest.--84.149.21.201 01:31, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

Birna's Death[edit]

S1D3WYZ requested that Birna's possible, unpreventable death be noted due to her having one of the two Coral Dragon Claws in the game. I was considering adding a note saying "Birna can be killed by a dragon or creature even if the player is not present, leaving only one obtainable Coral Dragon Claw." It is something that could be noted, but I don't think it's a notable thing to happen to most non-essential NPCs, and the other location is clearly noted in the Coral Dragon Claw page. Thoughts? -Velyanthe 03:34, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

Agreed. If she had the only Coral Claw in the game, that would be a different story. As things stand though, her having a copy of it to sell is so unneccessary and meaningless I don't know why it exists at all, unless the one in Yngol Barrow wasn't actually supposed to be there once the game was finished. This stuff should go in the bugs section for yngol barrow. I am having the issue that she is both dead and the but listed above about the claw not being on the pedis tal. So now I am unable to get past the dragon claw door (xbox360!. — Unsigned comment by 74.73.224.26 (talk) at 04:25 on February 14, 2012
Yeah she got killed in my game during the Containment quest from the college. Lord EydvarTalk 05:54, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
both birna and ranmir were killed with a master vampire outside their shop. birna turned into a pile of ash. 204.112.149.241 18:35, 1 March 2014 (GMT)redonyx.

Bug?[edit]

anybody else get this bug? or is it new? she just keeps repeating these lines when I speak to her, won't sell me the claw... "I'll sell just about anythingItalic text' if its worth my time. Keep that in mind will you." "I do what I have to so we can get by" "I'll sell whatever I can. if its wroth putting a price on you can bet I'll do it, I've been burned a few times, made a few bad deals but I mostly always come oun top" "Very funny" "allright then" "ranmir has no problem drinking himself under the table" — Unsigned comment by 24.38.223.147 (talk) on 9 April 2012

Give us more details. Is Birna inside or outside the shop? If she is inside, try waiting some hours, if you didn't already.
Does she sell you anything at all? Cridus 09:47, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
I'm encountering this bug as well. The dialog just exits after the "So I'll sell whatever I can" line. It doesn't return back to a choice, just fully exits every time, so I can't get to the claw part. I tried disabling relevant mods and it made no difference.--Eiglow (talk) 11:35, 27 September 2022 (UTC)

Shop[edit]

I have the bug which causes Birna to not let me buy items from her.How do i fix this? — Unsigned comment by Natsu (talkcontribs) at 09:10 on 18 May 2012

If you are playing on the PC you could try enabling and disabling her through the use of console commands. If you are on the PS3,than I am not sure what you can do.I hope this helps.--Skyrimplayer 18:42, 17 July 2012 (UTC)

Notes section[edit]

The Notes section contains a reference stating that Birna having the Coral Claw "suggests (she) is somehow connected with Yngol Barrow". The dialogue with her does not support this claim. She is quite explicit in stating the claw was the result of a "bad deal" she made, and therefore does not suggest any connection she may have to the barrow. Anyone care to confirm this interpretation in order to further justify removing the part of the note starting with "which she suggests..."? --72.88.199.175 20:00, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi there. On one part, you are right; she acquired the claw in a "bad deal" she made: "I've been burned a few times, made a few bad deals, but mostly I come out on top. Yeah, it was stupid of me. I shouldn't have believed the story and just refused the trade. But I didn't, and now I'm stuck with this worthless junk."
However, she did suggest that the claw is somehow connected to Yngol Barrow: "Some line about this claw thing and Yngol Barrow. He said it was worth more than its weight in gold if I took it back there. Something about placing it back in Yngol's chamber, I don't know. What was I thinking? Even if it were true, I'm not setting foot in some ancient tomb, filled with who knows what. I don't even care any more. You want to check it out? Fine. I'll sell you the thing for fifty gold, and then it's your problem."
I took her dialogue directly from game data. So, I don't think the note part should be removed. Hope that answers your question. ~ Psylocke 20:20, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
The page actually says
"One of Birna's dialogue options allows you to buy a Coral Dragon Claw, which she suggests is somehow connected with Yngol Barrow."
Its not indicating she has a connection to the barrow but that the Coral Claw does. Hope that helps clafify it :D --SPMcKinneyTCE 21:36, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

Reliable Crash[edit]

I get most of my crashes near whiterun's main gate and also brina's oddments. These are reliable despite video card changes and reinstalls etc. Any thoughts? — Unsigned comment by 173.173.31.223 (talk) at 03:19 on 17 July 2014 (GMT)

It's too specific to your game. You should seek help in some forum\site\chat. Cridus (talk) 10:27, 17 August 2014 (GMT)

Bugged dialogue?[edit]

The page says that after Drowned Sorrows, Birna is supposed to have new dialogue, but does not due to a bug that is fixed with the unofficial patch. Is this dialogue transcribed anywhere for those of us who only have the console version? Or am I misunderstanding the bug, and the fix just makes her stop talking about him altogether? 68.231.137.169 05:14, 24 July 2015 (UTC)

I'm not sure, although this article is a stub, and is missing all of her dialogue. I'll add it tonight. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 06:14, 24 July 2015 (UTC)
To answer your question, look at the now updated bug note. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 07:44, 24 July 2015 (UTC)
