Gold Reward[edit]

The gold reward for these quests appears to be level dependent again. At level 30 i got 1250 for this and the previous quest where the wiki states 750. (Killerchronic 14:29, 15 November 2011 (UTC))

At level 45 I got 1500 gold (84.56.230.19 00:02, 20 November 2011 (UTC))

Turdas at 11pm[edit]

it seems like at 9pm Turdas time jumps to Fredas. Gonna try one week later a day earlier. Because When it is 11pm, instead of going to any room he just leaves town. --190.27.160.141 03:02, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

Same thing in my game, when it is 11 pm Turdas he just leave the town... --Arkhon 10:30, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
I can also confirm this.67.149.249.153 05:19, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
I can also confirm this too. --Gdogg79 10:01, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
he wouldn't sleep for me either so i used the wabbajack in markath to make him explode into coins, seems like that attack is pretty silent as i got the bonus without bounty. — Unsigned comment by 79.248.106.180 (talk) at 00:23 on 15 February 2012‎

Gaius hostile in Dragon Bridge without completing the Stormcloaks questline.[edit]

It seems that Gaius is hostile to the player when in Dragon Bridge, even if you didn't do the Civil War questline at all. I don't know if this is something that was introduced in 1.3 or if it was a general problem with that stage of the quest from the outset. I fast traveled to Dragon Bridge to get his schedule, and he went hostile immediately. I have not even started the Civil War quest chain. Torinir 06:31, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

From what I can tell, they are hostile until their conversation is complete, which requires you to stealth near enough to them to trigger that conversation. Torinir 22:44, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
I did not see this in the PS3 Version. In fact even the OP Soldiers were free to roam. In fact, killing them is considered murder. Odd wasn't I suppose to kill all Imperials found wandering around? :) — Unsigned comment by Mattkire (talkcontribs) at 01:24 on 4 February 2012‎

Does anyone know if Gaius can be killed by random beasts and enemies?[edit]

Just curious. Although I did follow him swiming to the bottom of the waters near solitude where he got constantly mobbed by slaughterfish. Not sure where he is now. - JB 13/12/11

He is non-essential, so yes if you followed him, he could be killed by wild beasts. He is more powerful than most animals, as I have seen him take down a few wolves and bears. What I find strange is that he visits Windhelm and other stormcloak strongholds and remains perfectly safe even though he is scouting an enemy city to see if it is safe for the emperor to arrive. --Zar Pof 07:35, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
He completely ignored a dragon attack in Markarth, including being in the middle of the dragon's fire attack (thanks to my pushing him closer to the thing), for me. It was a little disappointing, really.141.151.80.233 19:20, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
I went to dragon bridge and had a random encounter with a dragon. Gaius died and the other soldiers were friendly. --76.29.81.176 21:29, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Thane of Whiterun[edit]

I ran into the bug where Gauis never showed up in his bed in the Bannered Mare, I got frustrated so I just killed him outside in the street when he came out. I sheathed my weapon and when the guards questioned me I got the option to state I was a Thane of Whiterun. They said, oh, it's ok then, just don't let it happen again. No bounty and I got the bonus on the quest. Someone mentioned earlier that Gauis' armor was good light armor, but it's not as good as what you get from the Dark Brotherhood, I gave some to my companion and sold the rest. — Unsigned comment by 75.182.91.142 (talk) at 17:53 on January 14, 2012

That's a general perk of thaneship in any hold, not just related to this quest. You get ONE "get out of jail free" card. You just used it on this quest. — Unsigned comment by Toadofsteel (talkcontribs) at 19:51 on 28 July 2012

Killing Gaius Maro[edit]

I got this quest on Loredas, so headed for Solitude on Mondas. He turned up around midday, and entered the city via the low level gate near the East Empire Comany warehouse. The tunnel leading to the marketplace proved a good, private place to do the deed. I don't know if he'll always enter by this gate, but it's handy if he does. Peterguard 15:06, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

Gaius Maro's Schedule[edit]

I have to assume I'm experiencing a bug... I went to the trouble of getting his schedule and then as I saw him leave I fast-traveled to Solitude, as it was Sundas and thus in a day (Sundas -> Morndas) he should still be there. I noticed the cursor showed him notably east of Solitude but I figured he was out for a swim or something. I traveled to Whiterun to store my excess baggage and judging by how long it took to get there it should be easy for me to return to Solitude by Morndas. I check the map to make sure nothing's amiss and I notice he's leaving Windhelm... I sleep until Morndas (just to make sure) and he's almost at Riften. Is the schedule bogus or am I just getting an annoying bug that renders it totally pointless? Bushwhacker 11:06, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

I noticed the same thing, but I hung around Solitude anyway. He turned up just after midday. I wish I could walk that fast! Peterguard 18:07, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

Gaius Maro's Actual Schedule[edit]

After reading over the comments, and experiencing similar events that did not jive with this "printed" schedule, I did some investigation and can report my observations. Hopefully it will help you find him alone in a city in order to get your bonus. I did not follow him in and out of every city, but I did observe when he left and returned to Whiterun so I'm assuming this may be his schedule in and out of each city pair. Forget what the schedule implies, here's what actually happens.

He appears to follow the schedule in general, in terms of which days he's in which city. For example, the schedule says he's in Riften on Middas, and that is true. However, in reality he sleeps there during Tirdas overnight, not Middas night as the schedule states. Here's how it actually seems to work: he LEAVES any given city at midnight on the day of his arrival (per the schedule), and starts his journey to the next city on foot. He then arrives in his next city after a few hours of walking and heads straight for the scheduled sleeping spot. He's in that city during that day and leaves at midnight that same night.

Following from the article's suggestion (and my observation), let's use Whiterun as the example. He departs Riften on Middas at midnight (12:00 am Turdas) and begins walking to Whiterun. He arrives at Whiterun at 3:10 am Turdas and heads straight for the Bannered Mare. He enters the Bannered Mare at 3:38 am Turdas, and makes a bee line for the back room (straight in from the entrance door) and immediately hits the sack. If you left him alone at this point, he'd be found later that same evening in the Bannered Mare seated around the fire, drinking. He'd leave the Bannered Mare to begin his journey to Markarth at midnight Turdas night (12:00 am Fredas), and so on. Thus, if you arrive on Turdas and plan to kill him that night you're too late.

Just for additional information...I nailed him just as his head hit the pillow in the Bannered Mare, with the door still open. I did not kill him on the first blow, and some melee ensued. I could hear the bar patrons talking about the tussle in the back room, and calling for help. The fight ended with his death but no aid ever came, no bounty was applied, and quest bonus was given by Gabriella.

Hope this all helps. --108.35.225.232 06:09, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

Ridiculous foul up[edit]

I was on the way to Dragon Bridge and wiped out a Thalmor patrol, liberating their prisoner. This did not give me any bounty (I checked). A good deal further on (well out of eyesight), I was attacked without provocation or warning by an Imperial patrol, as if I had a bounty of over 1000 gold. Once again, I wiped them out, and once again, no bounty was assigned to me (I checked again). However, when I got to Dragon Bridge I was attacked again. This is absurd. If I didn't trigger a bounty in the first two incidents, how did the people in Dragon Bridge know what I had done? --174.6.51.17 12:28, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

Stolen schedule not in inventory[edit]

I just stole the schedule, the guard said "You won't get away with that", I went outside and can't find it in my inventory. It's supposed to be in the "books" section, right? That quest stage is marked completed. Bug, or perhaps the guard who yelled at me took it. Thundre 09:45, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

Sometimes if you get caught stealing something, whoever "owns" what you stole will take it back from your inventory, I bet that guard is holding onto it now. — Unsigned comment by 71.234.174.69 (talk) at 09:37 on 22 June 2012

Planting Incriminating letter bug[edit]

My problem is quite specific. I killed Gaius Maro and planted an Incriminating Letter. But, when I traveled to the Sanctuary the game shows me I have to plant the letter. I can't return to Maro's body. I even tried console to skip the stagebut only stage 200 works (the one ending the quest; but then I don't get Olava's Token). It's my 6th character and the first time when I have this bug. — Unsigned comment by 89.167.74.32 (talk) at 20:11 on 10 February 2013‎

One of the official patches dropped the requirement to have the token, if that helps. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 03:09, 29 May 2013 (GMT)
The issue seems to be happen if you don't report to Gabriella within aprox. 12 hours. Therefore a workaround to this issue is to either avoid fast travelling or use the command movetoqt db06 to teleport back to Gabriella instantly. --89.242.73.71 00:52, 11 August 2013 (GMT)

Impossible to Kill Gaius Maro[edit]

So when I went to Dragon Bridge to start this quest a dragon attacked during the touching father/son moment. Ever since, it is IMPOSSIBLE to kill Gaius Maro. Even using the "kill" command with both the BaseID and the clicked ID won't kill him and "IsEssential" says "0" so he is supposed to be killable. Is there any way to salvage the rest of the Dark Brotherhood or is this character doomed to not finish the questline because of this? 68.156.95.226 02:57, 21 March 2013 (GMT)

The only thing I can think of is that you must have reversed pickpocketed the incriminating letter onto him before killing him. Somehow, this causes issues. Kaisar Dragon (talk) 20:47, 26 March 2014 (GMT)

Guards attack you bug[edit]

I killed Gaius in Markarth, and I was unseen the whole time. I did NOT incur a bounty from the killing. Yet when I went back to Markarth for the "Recipe for Disaster" quest, guards attacked me. I checked and it says no bounty, yet the guards keep attacking me. Even when I unsheathe my weapon. Has this happened to anyone else? I know how to fix it, I just want to know if I'm the only one with this problem.

EDIT: Never mind on me knowing how to fix it. I used the console command to pay the bounty and guards still attack me. WTF!? — Unsigned comment by 99.100.192.104 (talk) at 02:20 on 2 May 2013

Using the console doesn't always solve your problems easily. I'd suggest adding yourself to the guard faction to prevent it. But also, to what extent have you done "The Forsworn Conspiracy"? Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 03:09, 29 May 2013 (GMT)

Miswritten bug[edit]

The bugs section says that it is required to have a token to get a reading and that the bug is fixed by a patch... so wouldn't it only be a bug if the word "not" was inserted into there? Otherwise it makes perfect sense that a woman you don't know requires proof that you should get a reading...--69.136.59.17 04:39, 21 July 2013 (GMT)

Ok so when removing the bug I didn't see that it was an official skyrim patch not a UOP, which I thought it was. But it still irks me that Bethesda considered it a bug to NOT have to have proof of your connections so that a stranger will help you...--69.136.59.17 06:06, 25 July 2013 (GMT)

Surreal series of events: blind guards and water-breathing Gaius[edit]

OK, so I decided I'd kill Gaius in Riften by insulting him and having him attack me, after which I would run away and the guards would take care of Gaius. I've used this method before, successfully. However, this time, I insulted him, he attacked me, and the guards did absolutely nothing -- even when I deliberately led Gaius through two or three of them close together. I had Lydia with me and she was chasing after Gaius frying him repeatedly with a lightning staff, but it had very little effect on his health. I finally got tired of him hitting me and used Unrelenting Force to blow him over the railing and into the canal. I went down to the canal level and found him walking about on the bottom of the canal, fully submerged in water, as cool as any Argonian. Dove in and activated him, but all he would say was, "You're trying my patience, citizen." So, since we were out of sight of everyone (I checked), I pulled out a bow and shot him. Everyone in the market immediately attacked me, even though (1) none of them could see us, (2) the last they saw of him, he was trying to kill me, and (3) my dragon shout directed at him had not turned them hostile. So the question is, does this "insult him and have the guards take care of it" technique work any more? or did a patch eliminate it? Robinwitch1 (talk) 23:21, 3 September 2013 (GMT)

Happened the same to me. In my first playthrough, I killed him in solitude by insulting him just as he entered the gate. 2 patrolling guards immediately attacked him. But in next playthrough it didn't work for me(in solitude again) and incurred 1000 bounty. So i had to declare thaneship. Next time I was in markarth, again guards didn't help, I thought may be they didn't see him make the first strike but that was not the case as i found later as soon as i kill him (even if he makes first strike, in view of guards) the guards would give me bounty. So I used alternate method. Used self made lingering damage health poison(about 20 points/S for 10 seconds). In 2 hits he died(the bugger at higher level has much more health), but by delay of few seconds and it was fine even when i killed him in understone keep in full view of guards. But never unsheath the weapon until he dies or his health will be restored to full and he'll say "I'll let you go this one time" and stop attacking you. Next time you won't get to insult him and would make it impossible to earn bonus as in cities it's hard to kill him making first strike and yet not incurring bounty. — Unsigned comment by Akshayshah14 (talkcontribs) at 06:55 on 21 January 2014‎

Immortal Gaius Maro![edit]

Hi, I am trying to kill Gaius Maro in whiterun and there is some issue with him. I am trying to snipe him from the stairs up the bannered mare while he is sitting down on a bench around the fire. The issue is that when I shoot him for the first time with an arrow it drains a portion of his health. He gets up and goes looking for me. I just hide myself in the room on the top floor till he calms down. Now again he sits on a chair. This is where the bug occurs. Now if I shoot him with an arrow, it won't drain his health. I get a 3x critical shot, wearing shrouded armor, the hit registers perfectly, I hear the sound of the arrow striking him, he goes into search mode immediately, but it won't damage his health no matter how many times I shoot him while sneaking. The funny thing is I can damage him with a poisoned arrow, but since it does not kill him again I have to shoot him, this time his health again goes back to what it was after the first shot. I can only kill him if I shoot an arrow at him while he is in search mode. It kills him in one shot. But when I am hidden(gaius stops searching) its impossible to damage his health much less kill him. Tried this twice with two complete separate gameplay, same result both times. Can anyone verify? If this is a once in a blue moon bug its weird to have occur both times.

PS: Occurs in novice as well, so its clearly not his armor etc as the first shot drains away 30% of his health, the next shots do nothing if I am hidden.— Unsigned comment by 117.194.228.54 (talk) at 14:09 on 28 May 2014

Although this isn't directly related to your issue, Gaius Maro can be a surprisingly tough opponent, depending on your own Level and Health pool. According to the [1]Gaius Maro Wiki page, his Level is equal to the player's Level, within the range of 6-100. His Health is calculated by 150+(PC-1)×11.7
What you describe sounds like a one-time glitch. I'd say that if you had left the Bannered Mare and re-entered, the glitch may have not occurred the second time. It's become standard procedure to reset an interior cell in order to work around minor glitches. Evil-i (talk) 03:11, 3 February 2015 (GMT)

Incriminating Letter Bug[edit]

Ok, So when I get the letter from Gabriella it says its added to my inventory but then when I check, it is not added. I force add it using console commands but it still is not there. Then after the quest is complete (using console commands to stage 200) the letters reappear in my inventory. But then since the quest is completed, I can't start the next one and the quest line stops there. Solutions?

Game freezes once quest is acquired[edit]

I don't know if anyone else has encountered this issue but the game freezes the moment I take any action (walk, fast travel to Dragon's Bridge, ect.) after getting the quest. I've eliminated my mods (tried the save with none active and it still froze) as an issue and I know it worked fine before when I played it the last time a few months ago. Any ideas? StormDancer46 (talk) 04:37, 22 March 2015 (GMT)

If you had mods active in the save file and then loaded the game after disabling them, that might cause problems by itself. If you're using any unofficial mods, they might have interacted with each other weird. Other than that, I'm not sure what to tell you, other than to try reloading or maybe toying around with some of the console commands or game settings. Emperors Tower[edit]

On Morndas, you’re supposed to be able to kill Maro in the Emperor‘s tower, but what the entry doesn’t mention is it it is locked and requires a key. As I understand it, is not accessible except during another quest. So without cheats, you can essentially cross this time / place off the list. --Grimbold (talk) 05:15, 18 October 2019 (GMT)
