Vampires attacking?[edit]

I never had any vampires attack the city. As soon as I loaded my game Durak came and told me he was a vampire hunter and then sent me to Fort Dawnguard. He didnt even seem to care that I was a vampire. — Kimi the Elf (talk | contribs) 20:12, 26 June 2012 (UTC

Serana and Galathil automatically know if you're a vampire though. I saw a group of guards fighting vampires and their thralls in solitude. I picked some nice vampire armor and boots too. Mr.Scryer. 20:22, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
In my file (lvl 42) three vampires including a master vampire showed up in whiterun and killed about four guards. Maybe it only happens at night? RIM 19:03, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
The attack doesn't necessarily need to happen. Durak can talk to you outside of a city, or at a walled city such as Riften or Whiterun, talking to the guards will activate the quest and mark the fort on your map. As far as I have seen (I was in the beta), if you get to Fort Dawnguard without an attack, it won't ever occur. Also, if you are below level 10, you may begin the DLC by travelling directly to Fort Dawnguard. BenScoHolm 21:28, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
I was level 56 and it happened in solitude. On another file, it was just outside a town, it could be possible that it is a night thing since both of these happened in the pre-dawn hours. Mr.Scryer. 19:10, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
I've tried starting this quest about ten times now, and have only once seen an attack-- it was before I even heard the rumor from a guard, or was approached by Durak. I have a feeling it's random, and has nothing at all to do with this quest. I've put a VN tag on the page for now, awaiting more feedback from users regarding their experience. ABCface 21:26, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
I am level 46 and when I 'overheard' the guards talking about Dawnguard, a master vampire suddenly appeared and began to attack villagers, so in my case this would be true. — Unsigned comment by 82.73.165.237 (talk) at 18:10 on 30 June 2012.

() I think that it doesn't have anything to do with the first quest and nor your faction choice because there were two vampire attacks for me in two different cities, the first in Solitude and the second in Windhelm and I was half way through the main questline for the vampires. I think that it's just scripted to have random vampire attacks in cities and towns during the main questline because I haven't run into any vampire attacks after finishing it, other than in the wilderness where you can find pretty much any enemy in the game. Amun-Ra Battleborn 12:31, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

Some people have reported attacks before they even reached level 10, and others have reported that the attacks can continue long after finishing all Dawnguard quests for either faction. I think it may have been a random event that was scripted incorrectly, causing it to happen far more frequently than it was supposed to while ignoring its normal triggers. It might be a better idea to label this as a bug with the DLC itself rather than a problem with this specific quest.--98.233.36.227 18:02, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
I have yet to run into any random vampire attacks in town or on the road as a level 1 and I have been playing for 30+ hours now (I'm RPing a villager fun huh lol). From my personal experience they only occur when you either reach level 10 or complete the quest Dawnguard. --SPMcKinney 03:36, 17 July 2012 (UTC)
A user just posted this lengthy note to the article, which I have shortened, and added a {{VN}} tag to, with a link to this discussion.
  • Throughout the course of Dawnguard's main quest, and regardless of which faction you choose to side with, your character will be subject to random vampire attacks. If you happen to be in a city or town when this occurs, the NPCs populating these settlements will be at significant risk of dying as many of them will engage the vampires. If you wish to keep casualties to a minimum, it is advisable that you steer clear of NPC populated areas as much as possible while playing out the main quest. Once the quest "Kindred Judgment" has been completed (the final chapter of the main quest), the random vampire attacks will cease.
Some of these tips are irrelevant to this particular article anyway, but I think that this explanation makes a lot of sense, and in the playthroughs I've done so far, it holds true as well. Is this what other players are experiencing too? Can someone with a better grasp of CSList figure out if this the random attacks happen anytime between this quest and the last in the main Dawnguard questline? ABCface 20:38, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
I've been checking on this in the CK and the Vampire attacks are not reliant on the this quest starting. The attacks start when the player reaches level 8 and continue as long as Harkon is still alive. However, attacks will still happen during eclipses regardless of Harkon's status. I've updated World Interactions with the information I've found. Should the note be removed? (Node1006 (talk) 22:03, 20 December 2012 (GMT))
Okay, so they start regardless of this quest, then they stop once Harkon is dead- unless there's an eclipse. Is that right? — ABCface 22:13, 20 December 2012 (GMT)
Yes, that's right. Node1006 (talk) 22:24, 20 December 2012 (GMT)
Okay, thanks, just wanting to make sure I got that right. :) I'll remove the vampire attack information from this page and add it to the Kindred Judgment page if it isn't there already. Thanks! — ABCface 23:29, 20 December 2012 (GMT)

Skyrim Main Quest[edit]

Within the Dawnguard DLC, new and unique dragons are encountered. Because of this, I was wondering if the quest Dragon Rising is required to begin to Dawnguard. Does anyone know? Eximago 19:00, 28 June 2012 (UTC)

You only need to finish Dragon Rising if you want to encounter the new Dragons with the exception to Durnehviir who will always be there. --SPMcKinney 17:49, 14 July 2012 (UTC)

Pro tip for infinite Steel Bolts.[edit]

After you join up and have your crossbow and bolts Isran starts training Agmaer to shoot by having him shoot at crates. He doesn't stop until you leave and come back. Thus, if you wait, more and more bolts are fired into the crates and you can take them. If you need something to do while you wait go and explore the Fort. Being a vampire[edit]

I understand this question is somewhat stupid. But what happens if you try this quest with vamparism? Will you get attacked on sight? I figured I'd ask given this is the start of the quest chain and I don't beleive you can start with the vampires. Obviously for this I mean a basic vampire, not a vampire lord. 93.97.59.190 08:34, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

I did this quest as a vampire. You only get the choice of being a Vampire Lord by the 3rd quest and if you join the Dawnguard they don't check until the 4th quest, and even then they don't attack they just ask you to get cured. — Kimi the Elf (talk | contribs) 09:41, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
I did this quest as a regular non-Lord vampire and nothing changed, they didn't recognize me as a vampire and the quest proceeded normally, though Isran made a rather funny comment about the state of the Fort's disrepair and how as it currently was, "any Vampire could just walk in the front door" ...Which is exactly what I did. 76.178.164.214 06:44, 25 November 2012 (GMT)

There is no level prerequisite[edit]

You don't need to reach level 10 in order to begin the Dawnguard quest. I was able to create a new character, escape Helgen, and then travel directly to Dayspring Canyon where I was able to begin the quest at level 1. Level 10 is merely the level at which Durak will come looking for you if you haven't already begun the quest.174.0.116.189 19:31, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

Your right I did it last night, I didn't wanna mess with the page but I did add it to the notes section. --SPMcKinney 17:51, 14 July 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for bringing this up! The page has now been updated to reflect this. ABCface 12:50, 17 July 2012 (UTC)

Glitched Area[edit]

I have downloaded the DLC, and activated the quest, but upon approaching the Fort, an invisible barrier prevents me from progressing, displaying the message: "You cannot go that way." When switching profiles in the main menu, when I had downloaded the other two DLC (but not Dawnguard) the message: Some of your Add-Ons are corrupt and cannot be played. This is really odd. — Unsigned comment by 68.146.13.198 (talk) at 02:29 on 29 August 2013

I don't see what's odd, your add-ons have become corrupted, you need to delete them and re-download them. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 02:50, 29 August 2013 (GMT)
If you're on Xbox, that error message is actually somewhat common when switching profiles while in Skyrim's main menu. Your data is likely NOT corrupted, you just need to switch profiles from the dashboard instead. Also, are you trying to enter Dayspring Canyon and receiving the invisible barrier and message? If you try going to the map marker for the fort without first going through Dayspring Canyon, it won't ever work. You have to enter Dayspring Canyon initially, and make your way to Fort Dawnguard from there. After getting there the first time, you can fast travel there with no issues. — ABCface 02:55, 29 August 2013 (GMT)

Not given crossbow and bolts at the end of the quest[edit]

I completely skipped talking to Durak and went straight inside, then picked the "just looking around" option when Isran starts talking, and ended with "I'll have to think about it". When finally agreeing to help Isran, he doesn't give the crossbow and ammunition. Durak doesn't either when you speak to him afterwards. A bug, or is he purposely withholding them because you don't ask to join the Dawnguard immediately? Ejia (talk) 23:13, 29 October 2013 (GMT)

Won't start[edit]

I'm level forty-two, and the quest won't start. I don't hear any rumors from guards, and Durak hasn't approached me. I tried going to the fort, but, despite what the article says, the quest dialogue didn't start. I tried talking to Durak, nothing. Everyone just says, "Yes?" and "What is it?". Can I get some help here? 98.217.230.157 23:36, 1 December 2013 (GMT)

hmm... If you're on PC, you could try the Console command startquest dlc1vq01miscobjective or setstage dlc1vq01miscobjective 10. If this still doesn't lead to the desired result, it may be that you need to completely un- and reinstall your skyrim... -- SarthesArai Talk 16:30, 2 December 2013 (GMT)

UDGP Preventing Durak from Appearing?[edit]

On my last 2 characters, I've been having problems getting Durak to appear once I hit level 8. I'm wondering if this issue is introduced by a newer version of the Unofficial Dawnguard Patch, since I don't use any other mods and I didn't use to have this problem with some of the older versions. I couldn't give an exact version of the patch when it started being an issue, but I know it was after the unofficial patches were taken off Steam. Anybody else experiencing these issues? Aggressive Durak[edit]

Durak is immediately aggressive towards me. After being forced to kill him, I was able to proceed to fort dawnguard and start the quest normally. I haven't attacked and vigilants. Any ideas as to why? Saromango (talk) 02:44, 26 March 2016 (UTC)

What gets broken?[edit]

In the bugs section, currently written is;

The next quest, Awakening, may not trigger upon completion of this quest.

A commonly cited workaround is to skip the quest entirely. However, this causes quests later on to break.

Which quests? And how are they impacted?94.7.44.26 18:05, 24 May 2020 (UTC)
