Dead on arrival[edit]

Found him dead near his home upon first entering Riverwood directly at the start of the game. No apparent signs of struggle. Restarted the game because of another matter. He was alive the second time. As a guess his death may have been related to his love triangle quest, though I hadn't started it yet. I was level 1, and found no traces of wandering creatures, anyone have any ideas?--74.77.139.0 20:36, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

My guess would be it's some kind of bug, as open hostilities never seem to break out over Camilla (that i've seen, at least), and he should be more than capable of handling himself against the local wildlife, as you'll see if you attack him. — Unsigned comment by 24.247.177.201 (talk) at 04:42 on 13 November 2011
The first time I visited Riverwood after the escape I solved the love triangle in his favor but didn't ask him to follow me. After I got the golden claw thing I returned to Riverwood and found him dead on the stairs to the inn. --Lex 22:50, 18 November 2011 (UTC+1)
It's probably from when he loads in. I saw a guard fall to his death when the screen was loading in people in Whiterun. The program holds them above the ground and "drops" them into their starting positions. Sometimes quite hard.--75.83.208.29 15:10, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

Faendal and Sven as followers[edit]

Using the console, would you be able to have him AND Sven as Potential Followers? I finished the quest in Sven's favour a long time ago and didn't realise he was the only hire-able Bosmer.82.27.57.206 02:52, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

Arrow training exploit[edit]

As of 3:47am (xbox) (central) the Faendal archery training as follower no longer works. — Unsigned comment by Thunder (talkcontribs) at 09:59 on 30 November 2011

Are you sure? I just tried it out randomly a few minutes ago as of 12/19 and I was able to take the money back from him that I was paying for training. — Unsigned comment by 24.116.215.13 (talk) at 02:54 on 20 December 2011
False. patch3 Faendal is alive and well with archery training exploit working well. Dragonalumni 08:55, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
This bug is fixed with v1.2.6 - (2012-12-31) of the Unofficial Skyrim Patch on PC. It says that you can no longer exploit any follower for free training. I know this to be the case with Faendal for sure. I trained, and when I traded with him, the gold was not in his inventory. I could not train with him and steal the money back either. The patch note reads: It was possible to pay for training from a follower and then immediately take that money back from them, training for free, which is an exploit if the NPC is not your spouse. I have not tested with other follower/trainers. --Ignotus (talk) 23:31, 24 April 2013 (GMT)

gone for good[edit]

Faendal is gone for good. I've tried loading back in prior to realizing this but he is always gone! any hints? — Unsigned comment by 99.243.142.9 (talk) at 06:26 on 20 December 2011

Have you tried to start a new game to discover if perhaps he died and his body was disabled? 2dum2live 02:18, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

Elves[edit]

I recently started a game as an Altemer, and upon entering riverwood Faendal addressed me as if he too were an altmer saying something along the lines of "good to see a friendly face so far from home". Are we positive he is in fact a bosmer or is this just a bug? — Unsigned comment by Microsplice (talkcontribs) at 04:56 on 11 January 2012

Maybe he was just happy to see an elf. the closest elves are in whiterun or falkreath.Though, i think he said the same thing to me after i helped him. and I'm a nord...ForsakenOne 06:32, 12 January 2012 (UTC)
Could mean that he's happy to see a friend in general, for Nords are typically racist to elves. From Kharwog — Unsigned comment by Kharwog (talkcontribs) at 22:57 on 17 January 2012
Yeah I had the same line and I listened closely. He's says to other elves "Greetings fellow ALDmer" Lord Eydvar 21:46, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
"good to see a friendly face so far from home" he told to my argonian character as well. May be it's a speech skill thing? — Unsigned comment by 46.203.54.21 (talk) at 23:18 on 22 February 2012

Training[edit]

I took Faendal as my follower, and later dismissed him. After sufficient hunting, I found him again and told him to follow me, but he no longer offered training. Has anybody else encountered this? Can anyone suggest ways to debug/fix this? --174.55.124.57 08:12, 7 February 2012 (UTC) (IsmAvatar)

He is only a "Common"-level trainer, so he will not train you if your Archery skill is above 50 (the dialogue option is automatically removed). Maybe you raised your skill above 50 while he was dismissed? Alphabetface 08:24, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, that explains it. Didn't realize the dialog option was supposed to go away. --IsmAvatar 18:46, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Bug - no credit given when training with Faendal (PC 1.4.27)[edit]

I've run into a bug for the first time when training with Faendal . I think it may have been introduced with PC 1.4.27 patch. With all my previous characters, I trained for free to Archery skill level 50 with Faendal (at least 5 or 6 times as I've restarted some characters). In this new game, I just leveled to 9 and my Archery skill is at 34. I fast-traveled to Riverwood from Whiterun to sell stuff, blacksmith, and train in archery. I had Faendal follow me then asked to train, diaglog box acted as normal but the skill bar did not fill and there was no skill increase sound nor message, also the level progress bar did not pop up showing increase; however the money was taken and the box moved from 0\5 to 5\5. When I checked Skills, Archery is still at 34 (should be at 39) and the Level bar shows no progress made toward next level (should be at least halfway to level 10 with 5 trainings). I reloaded previous save and still had problem. I tried leaving Riverwood by fast travelling to Whiterun and returned (again by fast travel) and still had same problem. I am going to continue playing and come back later to see if problem self-corrects over time. Please, can anyone confirm this bug? Maeve 20:28, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

More information on bug: Here is a twist that worked to my advantage. As stated above, I moved on and got my 5 trainings from Athis in one-handed (put me halfway to level 10) and then started a side quest. On my way, I killed a dragon using bow when it hovered and sword/shield when it landed. I had the Well-Rested bonus. Both my Archery and On-handed increased and I leveled up. When Skills were opened to level-up, Archery was at 40 instead of 35. (Well now - how did that happen when I'm certain I moved on by loading the auto-save before training with Faendal?!?) Not that I'm complaining. It seems there was a lag in applying the skill increase which allowed an additional 5 trainings. Thus I got 10 trainings in one level. Did the game keep it in memory even after I loaded a previous save? Maeve 21:22, 4 March 2012 (UTC)
I was able to train with Faendal to Archery skill 50 okay after the above glitch, therefore, I assume this bug/glitch is self-correcting. I am curious if anyone else has experienced this. Maeve 05:58, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

Bug - no option to train after selecting "Can you train me..." with Faendal (PC 1.4.27)[edit]

There's yet another bug with Faendal training in 1.4.27. For me, when I'm choosing the dialogue option "Can you train me to be better at Archery?", the dialogue line "I'll show you what I know" appears, but there's no voice or possibility to actually train. It doesn't change even after the skill has been raised. — Unsigned comment by 31.63.107.9 (talk) at 15:26 on 14 March 2012

I can confirm the above glitch - Faendal no longer shows the training option. Any workarounds? Anotherazn 19:04, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
I'm having this same issue. — Unsigned comment by 108.13.187.192 (talk) at 01:46 on 28 March 2012

Class[edit]

The info box on this page says he's a thief, but the followers page says he's a ranger. Which is it? I'm not on PC so I can't check myself. --Midnightq2

His class is TrainerMarksmanJourneyman, so he's a thief. I'll update it on the followers page. --Velyanthe►Talk►Email 22:06, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Trvia[edit]

Very trivial information, but faen means damn (but often translated to f**k) in Norwegian, and dal can mean valley/canyon/gulch, also in Norwegian. So his name is, translated from Norwegian to English; Damnvalley. 2.150.49.196 06:35, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

Attacking Others Within His View[edit]

The main page says he leaves you and attacks you if you kill a Thalmor agent within his view. I had him with me for something like 24 levels, and I've deduced that he turns on you if you attack (don't even have to kill) any non-hostile person (apart from bandits/necromancers/etc bad guys that haven't yet noticed you). Using the Thalmor as an example - he'd turn on me if I attacked one of those random patrols if they were doing nothing but walking, but if I talked to one and they thought I was a Talos worshipper and attacked me and then I kill them, he's fine with it. I'd just add this to the main page, but I'm still new to this - is "non-hostile" the best way to describe the people you'd get in trouble for attacking? Are bandits/etc considered hostile even before they've noticed you? 68.65.39.108 04:58, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

My guess is that this is because of his morality level, which is "No Crime", but since I don't know for sure, I'll wait for someone else to chime in before making any related edits. ABCface 11:22, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
Faendal seems to live by the golden rule: if they leave you alone, you should leave them alone. Anytime you attack someone who is not hostile to you and who wouldn't attack you on sight, he will turn on you. This even includes bandits who warn you to go away prior to attacking you. For instance, go to a bandit-infested military stronghold. A bandit on the wall will look at you, draw their weapon, and urge you to go away. If you attack them, Faendal will turn on you, but if you ignore the warning and press on and the bandits turn hostile, then Faendal will defend you. Just Cav 05:02, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
After being contaminated with the disease that eventually turns into vampirism at Redwater Den, he didn't mind me killing the friendly vampire thralls near the exit. Neither did he mind me slaughtering a friendly orc stronghof--201.86.216.184 18:33, 29 October 2012 (GMT)

Faendal Won't Follow[edit]

Getting a weird bug. I completed the side quest in his favor and the option to have him follow appears in his dialogue. He responds with "Lead the way" as expect, but then goes about his usual business. If I try to invite him again, he says I already have a follower. What's the deal? SonGoharotto (talk) 03:57, 27 January 2013 (GMT)

Found that it's affecting more than just Faendal, so I moved this to Skyrim:Followers. SonGoharotto (talk) 19:41, 27 January 2013 (GMT)

Random Attacking[edit]

I am playing a Khajiit character, I just got into Riverwood, and I get Faendal as a follower, then I went afk, when I came back Faendal had his dagger out and was attacking me, why did he attack me? — Unsigned comment by 68.54.110.129 (talk) at 09:07 on 29 March 2013 (GMT)

Faendel attacks me[edit]

After a lot of encounters, one day I went to Riverwood to find Faendel shooting arrows at me, so I killed him. Later I received a letter from Camilla thanking me for doing so. Next time I saw Camilla I had a dialogue option mentioning the letter, to which she replied that she did not want to talk about it. Has this happened to anyone else? 72.241.219.230 01:20, 9 August 2013 (GMT)deanmakoma

I'm not sure why Faendal was shooting arrows at you in the first place (perhaps you performed some sort of crime and he reacted based on his morality level, but there could be any number of other reasons), so I can't say much in that regard. However, the letter from Camilla is something random that can happen with many NPCs in the game, based on their relationship rank with the person you killed. A little more info on that is listed here. It's not unique to this pair of NPCs, and thus not notable on Faendal's article- just a fun dynamic of the radiant system used in Skyrim. — ABCface 02:21, 9 August 2013 (GMT)

Faendal Follows Camilla after marriage and moving[edit]

Faendal follows Camilla to Lakeview Manor once you marry her and then ask her to move there. He can be seen coming and going at all hours and even appears inside at random. Confirmed on Xbox 360. BarnyMiler (talk) 03:03, 3 September 2013 (GMT)

Thanks for the confirmation, I've removed the {{verification needed}} tag from the page. :) — ABCface 03:17, 3 September 2013 (GMT)
