Level Requirements[edit]

Are there any level-requirements for this quest ? I tried starting it when I was on Level 7, and again when I reached Level 10 yesterday, and she never mentioned it to me, nor did it "pop up" in my Journal after having talked to her... — Unsigned comment by 77.181.11.164 (talk) at 14:12 on 26 November 2011

I did the quest at 25th and specifically recall this quest not being an option around 10-15 levels previously. Funny how she asked about the Thieves guild when I was the guild leader. I always laugh a little when that achievement has no bearing on the game. — Unsigned comment by Icthulu (talkcontribs) at 01:18 on 5 December 2011
I first tried to get this quest at level 7, then 9, it wasn't available either time. I went off and powerleveled my conjuration in the Ratway and came back at level 14, the quest was available. I did nothing else but raise my level so I'm pretty sure there is a level requirement whether it is 14 or not. I've read that this is the level you must be for Grimsever to spawn in Mzinchaleft, so I think this may be the magic number to start the quest. I'm going to add a note about the theorized prerequisites. If anyone can actually confirm the requirements for this quest please formalize them in the quest description. I'm level 29, am Thane of Riften and have completed Horn of Jurgen Windcaller, but the quest hasn't even shown up for me yet. Is anyone else having the same problem as me and is there a way to fix this problem? — Unsigned comment by 220.239.38.83 (talk) at 22:02 on 4 January 2012

() I can confirm that the only two requirements are lvl 14 and gaining a level after speaking with Mjoll. When you first speak to Mjoll she must mention the loss of her blade and why she decided to assist Riften. Just looking at Mjoll or eavesdropping on her conversations doesn't trigger the leveling up requirement; you need to run through her dialog options. It also doesn't matter if you are already level 50; you must speak to her as described and then gain another level and ask her again. This is how I came to the conclusion on requirements: I started a new character and didn't complete any quests except Unbound. I grinded til lvl 13, traveled to Riften, spoke to Mjoll, bought the life detect spell used it to level up to 14 in front of Mjoll, and was able to obtain her quest. 75.80.97.155 01:15, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

I did not need to do this; I was able to obtain the quest at level 19 the very first time I spoke to Mjoll. No extra leveling needed. 174.21.28.240 08:33, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
I can also confirm that level 14 was necesary for the spawn. Quest was available in the dialogue (although I obtained the item beforehand). — Unsigned comment by 90.197.163.120 (talk) at 19:27 on 23 January 2012

Dwemer activation at end[edit]

Does anyone know what the machine at the end, where the colossal robot guards the sword, gets activated with? — Unsigned comment by Icthulu (talkcontribs) at 01:20 on 5 December 2011

You need the Mistic Gloves, given by Septimus Signus during the Main Quest. It opens an entrance to Blackreach — Unsigned comment by 186.18.132.190 (talk) at 23:51 on 15 December 2011

Grimsever spawn note[edit]

The notes state that Mjoll must mention Grimsever before it will spawn, this isn't true, the first time I completed this dungeon it was there, I had not been to riften nor did I know of Mjoll's quest. — Unsigned comment by 81.206.17.230 (talk) at 19:44 on 5 December 2011

I can confirm that, never talked to her, Grimsever spawned on my first time in the dungeon Rpbraley868 03:19, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
Another confirmation (PC) --84.151.141.107 10:02, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
And now, almost a year later, I'm guessing a patch (or USKP) changed that, as I haven't talked to Mjoll, and the levelled shield is there, but no Grimsever. (PC) --64.185.155.117 19:33, 26 November 2012 (GMT)

Bugged?[edit]

I went to Mzinchaleft before ever meeting Mjoll and cleared it. However, Grimsever did not spawn, and I was unable to find it when I went back there after talking to her. Her quest will not start (I'm level 22). I added Grimsever to my inventory via the console, and still cannot complete the quest. I even tried using console commands to manually advance the quest(setstage FreeformRiften09, I tried 10 and 200 for the stage but neither worked). Anyone else had this problem or know a fix? — Unsigned comment by 74.196.25.22 (talk) at 11:08 on 6 December 2011

What does this note mean now?[edit]

The note says that you can find it in the ruins without talking to Mjoll, but that it won't be in the ruins without talking to Mjoll. Wat. — Unsigned comment by 132.178.2.63 (talk) at 04:57 on 11 December 2011

Re: Discussion of Grimsever not spawning/not getting quest[edit]

This is taken from my post in Skyrim talk:Mjoll the Lioness:

I believe in order to get this quest you need to have done some of the main quest up to finishing the The Horn of Jurgen Windcaller quest. I've loaded six characters up now, one with the intent on marrying Mjoll, only one ever doing her quest. In each one where I hadn't finished this quest, or even started the main quest at all, I was never given her Grimsever quest. In every single one where I had passed this point in the main quest the option was there. On the character I intended on marrying Mjoll with this was a problem at first and indeed upon completing the Horn of Jurden Windcaller quest I was able to get the Grimsever quest and have the option of marrying her upon completion. Hope this is helpful to others. -- Duran 17:32, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

I just did the same. Met her and exhausted dialog, did some smithing enough to level up, spoke to her and had no option, levelled up, then spoke again and the option was there. — Unsigned comment by 59.167.142.129 (talk) at 14:30 on 29 December 2011
As a counter-example: my character received the Grimsever quest, reached level 50, and completed the Jurgen Windcaller quest, in that order. - Fyda 16:35, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
Note from someone different-
I have been offered the Grimsever quest and I have not even found the golden claw (playing dragon free for now). I can't remember the level, but I think I was Thane of Riften — Unsigned comment by 144.132.150.135 (talk) at 01:18 on 10 January 2012
I checked the script using Creation Kit. This is how the quest is activated. When you level up, the story manager event Increase Level is triggered and at one node which is FFR09KickerNode, the game checks if your level is above the variable FFRiften09Gate which stores the value 14 in a Vanilla game. If your level is above that, the quest is kick-started. --Lampuiho 16:42, 27 June 2012 (UTC)

Room with levers[edit]

I'm stuck at the room with all the levers. I can't seem to figure out how to get past the final gate. I think it's because there's a bug where the lever to open the final gate doesn't actually open it. Can anyone help? — Unsigned comment by 71.255.95.199 (talk) at 15:05 on 27 December 2011

Its a puzzle: Activate the first lever, it opens the gate on the left, and closes the first gate. Go through it, activate the next lever, proceed though the next gate. Activate the third lever, you'll notice that it opens a different gate. Go back the way you came. Activate the first lever to switch the gates. Proceed through the first gate (open when you first get there). Activate this switch and then proceed back around the other way. The newly opened gate goes to the area with the chests and a red wheel. Search the chests and turn the wheel. This lowers all the gates. TolarisOmega 11:18, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

Activating the Quest[edit]

I've confirmed that your progression in the main quest has nothing to do with activating this quest. Because I've already received it and I'm still at "Before the Storm" chapter of the main quest. I still haven't even met the Jarl of Whiterun.

Here's what happened in my case: I went to Riften for the first time at level 25 and encountered Mjoll. When I spoke to her, she did not have the quest available for me. I exhausted all of her dialogue options and still no quest.

I then strolled over to the smith area and did something smithing until I leveled up (to 26). Once I leveled up, I spoke to Mjoll again and suddenly the Grimserver quest was available.

That's it. That's all I did. I walked ten feet, did some smithing, leveled up from 25 to 26, and that quest suddenly went from being not available to available. Since some players are reporting getting the quest at earlier levels, while others are still not getting it even at level 50, perhaps it has something to do with leveling once after meeting Mjoll? 174.0.116.189 08:03, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

(New person)
I tried this, and it did not work for me, but then again, Im maxed out in everything, so I used console commands to get smithing to level 1, smithed to level 2, and nothing worked. I also changed my level, so I leveld up when I leveld my smithing, and still, no quest. So I dont believe it's leveling.
I also compleated the main story line up to Diplomatic Immunity, so Main storyline-Leveling-Skilling does not work for me. — Unsigned comment by 75.39.100.89 (talk) at 05:08 on 30 December 2011
(New Person) I'm curremtly on Bleak Falls Barrow and I was able to access this quest by talking to Mjoll at level 21 then simply getting enough experience to level up via the speech exploit in the Black-Briar Meadery. After leveling up, she was perfectly willing to give this quest to me. I raised my level naturally unlike the previous post. — Unsigned comment by 64.252.250.247 (talk) at 01:22 on 2 January 2012
Manually using the console to level does not work. I tried it. I also tried using the console to skill level to level up my character and this does not work either. I loaded a save where I had many levels saved up by not opening the skills menu. So I tried talking to her before and after using up my level ups and the dialog appears. I cannot say what other prerequisites are needed but there is a level change tie-in or minimum requirement. 75.80.97.155 11:23, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

activating grimsever quest[edit]

just here to confirm I talked to mjoll at lvl 16 exhausted her dialog options then went over to smith bought enough leather and leather strips to level up my smithing enough times to reach lvl 17 (which was easy cause i was closs to leveling up anyway) went and talked to mjoll and grimsever quest was first one up kind of a stupid bug but has an easy fix — Unsigned comment by 98.229.187.118 (talk) at 06:50 on 18 January 2012

maybe elocuency? — Unsigned comment by 85.155.125.131 (talk) at 23:02 on 23 January 2012
New idea. Mjoll's disposition seems to improve from neutral to friendly if you agree with her that you think poorly of the thieves guild during her regular dialog options. Is it possible this has something to do with her giving the quest? Will test when I am able. — Unsigned comment by 166.181.3.34 (talk) at 08:39 on 26 January 2012
No, I told her that I was going to join the Guild. She asked at every meeting if I was going to rob her and still I got the quest. After I brought her the sword she told that she was thinking I was bad but I returned the sword to her and did not sell it blah, blah, she's available. A very good fighter she was but give her a 2 hand axe. — Unsigned comment by 194.44.219.225 (talk) at 12:39 on 15 February 2012
YOU HAVE TO BE AT LEAST LEVEL 14 TO GET IT JUST TALK TO HER AND SHE WILL GIVE YOU THE QUEST THATS ALL YOU NEED TO DO — Unsigned comment by 121.222.40.28 (talk) at 00:21 on 10 December 2012

Getting the quest[edit]

I think it does have to do with leveling however you don't have to ask her about the fact that she is not from Riften. I usually ask her only about the the black briar family the first time. — Unsigned comment by 82.73.72.148 (talk) at 07:06 on 17 May 2012

Quest Activation - facts from the creation kit[edit]

I've just had the bug where i failed to get the quest so hunted down the triggers from within the Creation Kit. Here's exactly how the quest should work:

1) At level 14 an event from the internal Story Manager should spawn Grimsever, whether you have met Mjoli or not. Technically this is starting the quest (setting the stage to 10) but there is no objective set at this point, hence you don't know about it. This seems to be the failure point.

2) After this point, when you meet Mjoli, the Grimsever topic should come up in conversation and start the quest proper.

3) Alternatively finding Grimsever will trigger the appropriate quest stage.

Unfortunately the use of Story Manager in the scripting of this event locks out commands such as SetStage, hence why the usual work around doesn't, in this case.

I'm not certain why the level up trigger fails to spawn the sword in the first place. I suspect it's a bug in the engine rather than the scripts.

I managed to fix the bug by removing Story Manager from the quest but there's no way of fixing it via the console as far as i can tell. I may put the fix on Skyrim Nexus, if there's not one there already. — Unsigned comment by 81.106.118.123 (talk) at 19:56 on 12 June 2012

Activation due to level up[edit]

I just wanted you to know that I also couldn't activate the quest, neither by talking to Mjoll nor by getting Grimsever itself (which I couldn't find in the ruin). But after levelling up in the ruins, it showed up right in front of where it was supposed to be. So maybe a level-up is triggering the quest/item. Well worth a try! — Unsigned comment by 91.51.127.138 (talk) at 20:20 on 20 June 2012

Max Level: Am I out of luck?[edit]

My character is level 81 (goofing off for about 20+ hours), never been to Riften, i go to Riften, talk to Mjoll and there is no quest option: is it leveled? Because I can't level any higher than 81.

Normally, quests that are leveled means that they have a minimum level to start them. I'm not aware of any quest that has a maximum level, which means that being level 81 shouldn't prevent you from starting any quests. I've been wrong before, though... --XyzzyTalk 04:03, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
Unless you talked to her about Grimsever before you became level 81 you may not be able to do it anymore. I think one of the requirements is you need to level up in between speaking to her which is of course impossible at level 81. — Kimi the Elf (talk | contribs) 04:15, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

'Locate Grimsever' Quest Name[edit]

The quest under Miscellaneous is named 'Locate Grimsever', is there any particular reason that this page is called "Grimsever's Return"? I note that most page ranks for Skyrim UESP are somewhere in the top 5 (usually 1-2) when the quest name is used for the title. (Startpage.com search engine) This was further down the search results page. The only reason I can think of would be the use of the title that doesn't match the quest. (this is just food for thought -- I don't care either way) — Unsigned comment by Drankinatty (talkcontribs) at 06:43 on 28 October 2012

The initial objective of the quest is to "Locate Grimsever", but it's actual name—which you don't see for miscellaneous quests—is "Grimsever's Return". Once you've found Grimsever, the objective would update to "Return to Mjoll". Because the objectives are often long and change as the quest progresses, the internal name of the quest is used, even though you'll never see that on-screen. Level up quest activation - again[edit]

As others have mentioned... At level 14 the topic of Grimsevers retrieval did not show up. Went on a wunderjar all the way to Karkarth on foot and returned and still no dialogue option. Went to Dawnguard and joined, got a couple of quests and again returned to Mjoll. Still no dialogue option. Leveled up to 15. Dialogue option appeared. Leveling was mandatory. Sniffles (talk) 07:26, 8 March 2013 (GMT)

I'd also like to confirm that leveling up after first speaking to her may be mandatory (I'm almost positive I've gotten the quest from her before without having to do so in other playthroughs). I have the latest official patch (1.9? The one that introduces Legendary difficulty) and the latest unofficial patch for PC--this patch changes Grimsever to a 2-handed weapon, but that's the only sort of relevant change listed on the patch's change log. I actually went to Mzinchaleft before traveling to Riften and trying to get this quest from Mjoll. My character was level 22 at the time. I completed Mzinchaleft but Grimsever did not spawn--the leveled shield was there on the table, but Grimsever was not. I then traveled to Riften and talked to Mjoll, but the dialogue option that leads to you starting the quest wasn't there. Next, I leveled up light armor by training with Grelka and then leveled up my character to level 23. After this, I talked to Mjoll again and the dialogue leading to the Grimsever quest was there. I fast traveled back to Mzinchaleft and Grimsever had spawned. Everything was fine from there. Dukesilver (talk) 15:06, 1 June 2013 (GMT)
Seems level up after first speaking to her do works, and it's the requirment. Similar to The Wolf Queen Awakened (finish the man who cried wolf first, turn in, level up, and the courier shows up).Templarphoenix (talk) 18:56, 15 August 2015 (UTC)

Does the Centurion guarding Grimsever actually fight?[edit]

I've done this quest twice now, and both times the final boss didn't attack me even attack me once. He lumbers towards you, but then just stands there. Looking at him from a distance the second time, I noticed that he looks like he's sparking and smoking as if he'd been damaged previously -- perhaps by Mjoll during her adventure here? Whether or not this is an "in-game" reason for its behavior or the boss is just glitched, either way this quest is much easier as a result! On the off-chance it was just happening to me I haven't changed the article, but if others can confirm it would be worth mentioning. 64.229.254.162 22:23, 7 May 2013 (GMT)

I know this happened for me in an old playthrough, so it's not just you. I don't know if it's a permanent issue or not though. I'm on PC and have a mod that affects enemies, including centurions, and the centurion behaved normally for me when I fought it the other day. I'd have to try it again with no mods to confirm it. Dukesilver (talk) 15:48, 1 June 2013 (GMT)
The Steam Centurion refused to attack for me as well. I reloaded from outside the loading door, possibly from the main menu and when i entered the Centurion fought that time. I was reloaded on being defeated by the Centurion and he wouldn't fight again, so not sure what triggers it.
Pleasenoname (talk) 03:25, 17 March 2015 (GMT)pleasenoname
I just tested this using my urba-killer lvl90 guy. The problem seems to be high stealth. If you kill the sphere and the centurion does NOT see you he moves to your left and you can see a glitchy movement he makes as he turns. He will not fight after this even if you attack him. If he sees you before that he'll come right for you. I did about 5 reloads (auto-save) for each method (10 total) and was able to repeat this each time. There may be additional factors as well. Mjoll not giving Grimsever Quest and I am at Level 533[edit]

This bug also exists in the Xbox one version, And there is something i like to point out

Grimsever can be found within Mzinchaleft before acquiring the related quest from Mjoll. This will open the quest dialogue with her. Level 14 is required for the sword to spawn however.

^ That is false as the weapon was not there without the quest.

It's not false, this is a very buggy item and quest 94.140.9.232 15:37, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
