I found him in Darkwater Pass gaol when on a rescue mission for the Companions, on release he begged me to "get him back home" which suggest it's a random but scripted event. Is this worth mentioning? Bwilderbeast 17:59, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

I guess you could say that he can occasionally be encountered in random quests for the companions. RIM 18:43, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
Additional notes: Because the quests for the companions (specifically, the radiant ones) are generated before you actually get them, if you progress far enough in the companions questline to get a "go rescue ___" quest and he's selected as the victim, he can and will be teleported to some random spot he's supposed to be rescued from (really, this is true of anyone who can be the subject of the "rescue" quest). At which point, if you don't actually DO the quest but load the area he's in (such as by walking through it), it's possible for him to be "freed up" from his "stand there and wait to be rescued" script and start walking back home on his own. For myself, I've encountered him near Whiterun, walking back home to Solitude. He followed the road passing Rorikstead, continuing on his merry little way as though it was entirely normal for him. 174.28.84.105 23:42, 28 January 2020 (GMT)
