Bugs[edit]

This is a little long winded but I wanted to detail as much as I could for anyone else to duplicate and confirm. Ok I found Pantea's Flute well before I got the quest and encountered the bug where no marker showed up and it wouldn't acknowledge that I had the flute already. I messed around with getstage and setstage and thought to report my findings. I don't feel comfortable enough to edit the main page so I'm leaving what I learned here for someone more knowledgeable to do the actual editing of the main article. Like I said I already had the flute and then had the festival and talked to Pantea there and received the quest but it wouldn't update. The journal entry was Find Pantea's Flute, but no marker was showing and I already had it anyways. It would not update no matter how many times I talked to Pantea or went in and out of areas or slept. I used "getstage bardscollegeflute" in the console and got a return value of 20. So I used "setstage bardscollegeflute 30" which returned 'Stage 30 not found'(so maybe that can be removed from the table) Using "setstage bardscollegeflute 40" updated the quest for me, I received the notification 'Completed: Find Pantea's Flute' and the journal updated to Return Pantea's Flute. I sought out Pantea and finished the quest, of course the flute was left in my inventory but I guess that is known to happen regardless. Kevinx 04:07, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

This type of 'workaround' is explained on the page for every single quest. It's under quest stages... Not sure why you put any of this here, it doesn't provide any useful information to anyone. It'd be like adding to the quest- I followed the quest guide and I was able to finish the quest! Totally useless to share with others. --Sam
As a complete novice of using the console codes I found this post very helpful in my understanding of how quest stages work as I had the same problem. Not everyone is innately familiar with Skyrim's console commands. Totally not useless to share with others. --Adam

I agree - not all quests that are bugged are able to be completed by advancing the quest with the console (like seeing Skald for your reward), and it's helpful to know that this one can and that stage 40 is what I needed. I think you should turn down the flamethrower, Sam.

Tip[edit]

moved from article

When having trouble killing the boss, the Master Necromancer, you might wanna try this cheat. You can walk and jump creatively around the big round rock on the right side of the wall at the beginning of the cave to get to the plateau, where the Necromancers are. After this you can walk around so the Necromancers target you, and after this you can hide behind the fence on top of the wall to prevent the Necromancers from casting their spells at you. You can get into a position where you can shoot arrows at the top of the head of the Master Necromancer, while he can't cast spells at you. In this position the Master Necromancer won't move, not even after being hit by an arrow, and this way you can simply shoot arrows until you have killed him, without him having a chance to hit you.

This reminds me of the countless "Killing Umbra" back in the OB days. Doesn't belong on the article. --Krusty 13:26, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

Test[edit]

uh u forgot to remove the test at the bottom of the article? — Unsigned comment by 96.22.244.111 (talk) on 7 December 2011

Thanks for pointing that out. It's been removed. For future reference, though, you are also free to fix any such mistakes yourself. --NepheleTalk 05:32, 9 December 2011 (UTC)

Got same problem on xbox stuck with 2 flutes and drum!

Pantea's flute xbox360[edit]

I ran into the flute long before I was given the quest also and I am given the marker to retrieve it but I already have it and it will not update, I can't drop trade sell store or otherwise get rid of the flute to pick it back up I also have a few other quests that have done the same such as with the remains and tanother for an amulet

According to Bethesda, this should be corrected in the next patch. 98.88.103.208 22:06, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

Pantea's Flute[edit]

The flute cannot be returned nor can you remove it from your inventory if you find it before you receive the quest. The NPC acknowledged the flute when brought to her, but the program did not transfer it out of the inventory. It is a weighted item, so be warned. XBox 360 has no way to fix this.220.122.215.212 01:10, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

I believe all quest items are actually weightless (don't add to your encumbrance) despite showing a weight value on them. So it will not burden you unduly. Perko 09:18, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

I tried something different and failed...[edit]

I also found the flute long before the quest. So I walked up to Pantea in the Bards college and attempted to "give" her the flute by pick pocketing her front side. It would not let me "give" her the item and even though I did not steal anything, all the bards started to attack me. I was able to sheath my weapon and walked away, but I thought it creative to try to give her the item through reverse pickpocketing. No such luck. Those geeks at Bethesda will be talking to my lawyer very soon.

thank you[edit]

this was the best piece of info i've read so far on ANY skyrim bug. I have no idea why, the complaint about 'pointless information'. This was priceless and put me back in the mood to play what is otherwise a fantastic game. It is severely let down by all these quest journal-bugs which leave you frustrated and rushing thru them (instead of enjoying the atmosphere) because you can't be confident you haven't tripped yet-another-irritation.

PS3 Fixed with Patch 1.4[edit]

PS3 - It appears the bug which prevented the flute from being removed from inventory when completing the quest has been fixed. Unknown if finding it before the quest is given still breaks the quest. Philbert 05:46, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

Returning the flute after patch 1.4 on PS3[edit]

I found the flute before talking to Pantea and I can't return the flute after the quest has been given now. It still does not work post 1.4 patch on PS3— Unsigned comment by 207.107.233.227 (talk) at 12:41 on 13 February 2012

Found and removed it from the chest? Because I just found out, but I didn't take it, and I haven't attempted to start the quest yet. Is the quest bugged for me now? --109.175.185.11 01:50, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
According to an e-mail User:Gutarjunky received from Bethesda support, "Every older save is associated with the older patch, and every new save is associated with the latest patch." For the first person who posted in this section, I would guess that you would have to reload a previous save from before you found the flute in order for this patch to actually help you. For the person who hasn't yet taken the flute or attempted to start the quest, you should be good to go as long as you create a post-patch save file before doing either of those things. I hope this didn't confuse you more. Just trying to help. :) Alphabetface 03:51, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
This is an old discussion, but the quest page doesn't seem to discuss how the quest works if you find the flute first. I presume you just take the flute to her, or perhaps the journal/quest advances to the stage where you hand it over right after you talk to her about fetching it. I will test this at some point, possibly after I've finished No Stone Unturned. I would do it before, but the reward from that quest is perfect for ancient nordic ruins in particular, so I'm reluctant to go into more of those than I have to before I have it. Not to mention it's the longest quest in the game, so getting it out of the way on each playthrough is usually a priority for me.--Playerseekingbugs (talk) 09:13, 3 December 2013 (GMT)

Encountering Larina![edit]

Hello! Ahem. Just so you know, I did the quest that set me up to have Eola as a follower. Then I took her along with my PC, to investigate a quest that I forgot about, until I found the body of a woman near the entrance of the cave, and I was reminded then what that quest was about. But instead of finishing that quest, I opted to continue exploring the caves and caverns. I eventually found the item known as, "Pantea's Flute". Curious about it, I came here to research it, as that saves wear and tear on my official guide book. I learned that it is indeed a quest item as I thought. However, despite what the article states, Larina wasn't in a cage, alive or dead. Instead, she joined the various types of Necromancers in attacking my PC and Eola. Eola was zapping back at those that were zapping us. Larina took a hit, and I couldn't loot her in time to bury her, before she became a pile of crystalline ash. Sigh. So there you have the gist of it. I don't know how this will affect the quest to retrieve the flute. But Larina won't be a part of it will she? I ask, because with the mine escape quest, I'd been in the prison mine before, just to loot and use up dialogue options, when a brawl broke out. I used a home teleportation spell to get out of it. I'd buried the dead as I killed them too. Well, eventually, when I actually got into the quest, some of the buried dead, their tombstones were gone, but at least they weren't there anymore. (Like the man and woman that are in a chamber where they observe the entrance and pull the chain. They were gone. However, others that had been killed, were alive to do their part in the quest, and their grave markers were gone. I was able to mine the silver without doing time too. Not much of the loot spawned back in place. With that in mind, I'm wondering that if and when I do the flute fetch quest, will I be facing the same foes again, resurrected to do their part in the quest? If so, did a patch do that? Or is it a mod? Or like, what else might explain it? Thanks for any helpful replies. Leo Star Dragon 1 (talk) 05:06, 8 April 2014 (GMT)

If you've been to the dungeon before then the locations of named NPCs are likely to be different. In the case of zombies that turn to ash piles they respawn alive where their ash pile was, thus Larina spawned near where she gets moved to. Larina cannot be rescued (though you can open her cage), she has no real significance to the quest, and her death is scripted as part of the quest while progressing through the dungeon. Thank you SIG! Hmm. I had no option to rescue her, because she was free, alive, in iron armor too, and she attacked my party of two, and she was teamed up with the necromancers there. By coincidence, I chased a Blood Dragon to the college, only to have my pursuit halted by the gate guardian, so I'm just now starting those quests. So I'm wondering what will happen when the quest journal has to catch up with what I've all ready done. Will it be like with the mine escape quest, where it got reset, or will the deaths be ignored, or what? Leo Star Dragon 1 (talk) 07:40, 8 April 2014 (GMT)

Flute before quest, no prerequisite, no bugs[edit]

I found Pantea's flute prior to any contact with the Bard's College. I went to Solitude and approached the Bard's College. Illdi was standing outside the college and I spoke with her, which gave me the quest "Investigate the Bard's College". Upon entering and being approached by Viarmo, I canceled his dialogue. I then proceeded to speak to Pantea, and had the option to return her flute. I received the skill bonus rewards from Pantea and the flute was removed from my inventory. I have not started the quest "Tending the Flames", so it is not (or is no longer) a prerequisite. Playing on Nintendo Switch. 73.65.56.235 21:54, 21 December 2022 (UTC)
