(Hunter)[edit]

(Hunter) doesn't seem like the best word to use to distinguish this quest from the Vampire path. (Dawnguard) would be a much better name in my opinion, despite some possible redundancy due to the DLC's title. —Legoless 14:53, 12 July 2012 (UTC)

Agreed, Hunter may be in the ID, but it is a Dawnguard faction quest. The Silencer speaksTalk 15:00, 12 July 2012 (UTC)
I feel the same way about this. Since most players would likely consider themselves aligned with either 'vampires' or 'Dawnguard' it makes more sense to use this title than how the game files label it. ABCface 15:51, 12 July 2012 (UTC)
I agree as well. The "hunter" title is a little confusing. As one could consider vampires hunters, as well.--Skyrimplayer 13:19, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

quest stages[edit]

There are in my opinion far to many stages given some of which can easily be removed. — Unsigned comment by 82.73.72.148 (talk) at 11:09 on July 24, 2012

The stages are taken directly from game data. It is the game that has the many stages; we merely copy them. This also aids in times when people must advance to a certain stage via console due to occasional glitches that make it difficult to advance in quests—this is only possible on PC, but it will certainly be useful when Dawnguard is out for PC. We do not remove stages from quest pages. Vely►t►e 16:18, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

Dexion Bug[edit]

When I showed up, Dexion was outside the magic barrier fighting the vampires. (Took me a minute to realize that he was supposed to be inside it, hence the "deactivate the magic barrier" step in the quest log.) I sent him on his way to Fort Dawnguard, then went to deactivate the barrier, which caused him to register as hostile and turned into an endless loop of me kicking his ass, because the conversation option was no longer available. Had to reload and do the quest sequence in the proper order. SonGoharotto 18:10, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

The bug that was posted originally in this edit was later completely reworded, and from the those two and this one, your details and workaround give the most information and make the most sense. Since Dexion becomes hostile basically after rescuing him, it's probable that something going not-quite-right in terms of order of events is what's causing the bug. I've merged the three versions and marked it as a confirmed bug. Feel free to reword further if you think it needs improving. ABCface 21:43, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
I tested another way to complete the quest and added that to the article. SonGoharotto 13:14, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
Awesome, thanks for the extra testing. I'm sure anyone who runs into that problem will appreciate it! ABCface 13:21, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

Hostile Dexion Bug[edit]

im having problems with this too, but ever since i downloaded the content i was having trouble with the game, i am level 50, completed main campaign and was so excited when i discovered there was a DLC for the game, as soon as i downloaded it and started playing it, i started ecountering that when i joined the dawnguards, it was starting to go strange after the first mission where you have to go get the female vampire with the elder scroll, i collected her and reached the vmpires home declined his request of making me a vampire because i want to remain a werewolf. When i had to collect the people that we needed for help, everything was fine but when i had to rechieve the moth priest that was when the real major problems started to roll in, i reached him, released him and he started to attack me, im not sure if he was ment to or not but after i staggered him and knocked him to the floor while he recovered his health, i told him where to go and all the details, when i came back to dawnguard he was there and was atacking me yet again but where i am a part of their team they all helped me, when it came to the part where i needed him to read the elder scroll he would, he would continue to attack me and not read it, after a while i got fed up and used unrelenting force on him which made him read the scroll, while on the floor. after that i still couldn't get him to give me the details to where i have to rechieve the other two elder scrolls. so i gave up and went to talk to the new recruits and the one of them told me to rechieve some other man that could help, so i went there rechieved him and guess what, he attacked me over and over like the last person. as i left the crypt and returned to dawnguard everyone started to attack me! and it has messed up my long hours on the game and i don't really like the idea of starting again because that would be all my hard work down the drain, any suggestions. If ANY NPC you need starts to attack after a battle reload a previous save immediately, you obviously have lots because everyone knows you should have due to certain bugs like this. Its likely you attacked or hit him accidentally and this carried on although having not had the same issue i can't be sure. Also no idea what rechieved is i can only assume you mean retrieve, however misspelling 4 times is rare when it doesn't even sound close. Killerchronic (talk) 01:02, 26 April 2013 (GMT)

Cave location bugged[edit]

I showed up where the attack scene should have been but nothing was there (no vampire body). I forced the quest stage forward to the point where I need to go to the cave but no quest arrow points me in the direction. I've searched all over where the location of the cave should be and I've found nothing--there's not even a cave location appearing on my compass. What do I do? 66.176.53.36 20:49, 20 September 2012 (GMT)

Two Scrolls?[edit]

Serana happened to walk by while the priest was reading the scroll, and I noticed she still had it on her back. Is this worth noting as a bug?Ivan the Vandal (talk) 17:29, 19 October 2012 (GMT)

No not at all, bugs affect gameplay this is merely a graphics glitch at most. Killerchronic (talk) 00:48, 26 April 2013 (GMT)

Dexion dialogue bug[edit]

When releasing Dexion from the forcefield, he says two lines of dialogue. Or rather, he's supposed to, but for me, his second line of dialogue "But my master is dead, and his enemies will pay!" plays immediately after he starts the first, cutting it off before he can utter a single syllable of "I serve my master's will." -Trogdor — Unsigned comment by 99.141.27.127 (talk) on 4:38, 3 January 2013

Yes i have this problem too, and he is permanently hostile and unprotected and unessential, meaning I can only kill him and and stuck at defeat/rescue the moth priest. 128.120.173.187 03:42, 8 April 2013 (GMT)

Dragonbridge[edit]

After fast travelling to dragonbridge and speaking to everyone in the town they all seem to state the same thing. Either they know nothing or i should speak to a guard, yet the guards have no dialogue options at all just give an automatic response when interacted with. Tried daytime and night, i assume i must be missing one but certainly a pain. I am at the correct stage according to the quest although i had no stage with solitude, just mages tower and then direct to dawnbridge. Killerchronic (talk) 00:58, 26 April 2013 (GMT)

So i gave up asking, finding the "crash" by yourself has the same effect as being told it seems. Still not figured out why none of dawnbridge would trigger the next stage/qustmarker though. Killerchronic (talk) 03:07, 26 April 2013 (GMT)

Dexion unresponsive[edit]

When I and Serana got back to Fort Dawnguard, I spoke to Isran and was told the priest would be ready any time that I said. But when I spoke to Dexion, he had no option to read the scroll, only to chat about its background. Asking Serana did not produce anything useful; asking Isran again got me directed to the crossbow project. Something seems to be off the rails here. 174.6.51.17 06:16, 29 July 2013 (GMT)

I am experiencing the same bug Grey (talk) 19:09, 2 August 2013 (GMT)
Workaround -- DON'T talk to Isran when you return to the castle (even though the quest pointer points at him), talk to the Moth Priest first. If you talk to Isran first, it bugs out the priest's dialog.--98.165.130.24 02:14, 26 August 2013 (GMT)
Had the same bug today. The problem with the solution above is that it leaves the 'Report to Isran' objective as incomplete in your journal, which is untidy. Also, the last objective 'Talk to the Moth Priest' never appears at all. I have found a better solution.
1. Do talk to Isran, but exit the conversation immediately upon selecting the option about the priest.
2. Talk to Dexion -- it helps that he stands nearby -- and select the new conversation topic. You need to do this before the quest objective 'Report to Isran' updates in the background. Once it does, the 3rd topic disappears forever from Dexion's conversation tree.
3. Once you started talking with Dexion, do not exit the conversation until he starts reading the Scroll.
And that's it -- now the quest completes with ALL the objectives marked properly. Beholder (talk) 19:24, 27 April 2014 (GMT)

A slight discrepancy[edit]

Your PC is informed: "The only persons who can read the scrolls are the blind Moth Priests who lives in the Imperial City in Cyrodiil, a long way from Skyrim." And so you set out to scour Skyrim to find the Moth Priest, eventually locating him near Dragonbridge. In fact, Cyrodil is closer to Fort Dawngaurd than Riften and the Imperial city is a little closer than Dragonbridge.Sniffles (talk) 11:14, 2 February 2014 (GMT)

They both are around comparable distances, but the circumventing the mountain ranges could almost double your travel time. Or maybe the devs just don't expect people to think about it that much :) AutoPilot (talk) 11:56, 2 February 2014 (GMT)
And remember what happened the last time you tried to cross the border; you almost got decapitated. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 13:36, 2 February 2014 (GMT)
Point. And at that point it could become ultimately ironic. You survived, thanks to Alduin, who you are now hunting. You could go chum it up with the guy who was trying to chop your head off, get yourself a spiffy set of Imperial armor and explaining things to Tullius, get yourself a pass to Cyrodil and dig up your own moth priest. Whiterun Innkeeper also gives info[edit]

I'm not familiar with leaving comments on wiki's so forgive me if I input this incorrect. Anyways, at least in my game, on PC with the Unofficial patches I was able to get directed to dragon bridge by the Innkeeper in whiterun. May be worth noting since this seems to make the statement that 'Only the innkeeper at the Winking Skeever in Solitude will provide information' as incorrect. 71.60.95.10 04:35, 12 April 2014 (GMT)

I just did this quest, and used Hulda to get directions to Dragon Bridge as well. I think I remember using Keerava and possibly Kleppr and Elda Early-Dawn in the past. --Morrolan (talk) 19:28, 5 August 2014 (GMT)
You're correct, at least as far as I can figure out. The coding for Dawnguard is a little bizarre, but it looks like, at the very least, Hulda, Corpulus Vinius, and Sorex Vinius (if he's taken over for Corpulus) can give you the quest. For now, I'll update the statement to include both Hulda and the Vinius'. If you can confirm others, I'd definitely be curious to hear about it! Robin Hood  (talk) 20:40, 5 August 2014 (GMT)
I've also tried in the past to use the innkeepers in Falkreath and Morthal, and they haven't worked. So "innkeepers in the major cities" probably just means the five major hold capitals, which is what one would expect. --Morrolan (talk) 20:48, 5 August 2014 (GMT)
I know I've tried innkeepers in some of the major cities while verifying something for this, and they don't all work. Barring anything evidence to the contrary, I'm assuming that Hulda and the Viniuses are the only ones. Robin Hood  (talk) 13:01, 6 August 2014 (GMT)

() Just tried her, and Early-Dawn does not give info for this quest. --Morrolan (talk) 22:14, 26 October 2014 (GMT)

Yet another hostile Dexion workaround[edit]

Just ran across this bug today, and I found an additional way around it. As soon as you enter the cave, use the console to turn off detection (tdetect) and kill all the enemies: death hounds, thralls, and vampires. You can then turn tdetect back on, take the weystone off Malkus's body, shut down the barrier, and Dexion reacts as he's supposed to (i.e., hostile until you knock him out of it). Wordmama (talk) 15:57, 25 April 2015 (GMT)

Dexion leaves[edit]

When you tell him to go to Fort Dawnguard, he will immediately be on his way

Interesting that when he heads out, he goes in the opposite direction, through Dragonbridge and towards Solitude. Perhaps to hire a carriage driver?--Grimbold (talk) 03:09, 2 March 2020 (GMT)
