Master locked door?[edit]

The walkthrough only mentions the master locked door. Has anybody found the key? What's the reward for getting the door open? — Unsigned comment by 83.83.146.1 (talk) at 20:54 on 14 November 2011

^There is a common soul gem and an expert chest inside. — Unsigned comment by 98.232.136.81 (talk) at 13:14 on 18 November 2011
As far as I know there isn't a key, but play around with the locks, you'll get them eventually. Btw, the loot inside is well worth however many lockpicks you break getting to it. Kremlin16 05:51, 27 November 2011 (UTC)

For the sword left to the wall.[edit]

At the point I explored the tomb I had not the proper shout available to cross the broken bridge. So I tried unrelenting force shout, fireball, even hitting the sword with arrows. All of them moved the sword but that wasn't enougoh. What was succsesfull? I placed a frost rune at the side of the broken bridge and trigered it. Splash! Then the annoying part... Trying to find the sword (elven one-handed) in the water that you cannon fully sink! — Unsigned comment by 178.128.54.187 (talk) at 02:06 on 18 November 2011

I'm moving this to the main page. Thanks for the tip! Krag 16:41, 19 November 2011 (UTC)

I managed to shoot the Sword out of the alcove using Arrows, but it took about 50 shots. Had it down on the ledge a few times, only to have fly back into the niche. I think shooting at the tip of it (rather than at its center) is the secret. That'll make it spin more, making it more likely to ricochet off the wall, rather than just flying straight back. (When the Sword is deep in the dark alcove and hard to see, fire an arrow or two where you think it is. The puff of dust from the arrow strike acts like a little glowing burst, making the Sword easier to see in the dark.) Also, it's easier to find submerged items in murky shallow water if you equip a Torch and walk around looking straight down. Evil-i 02:29, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

Any diplomatic way to deal with Windelius?[edit]

I snuck through and out without fighting him, but considering his journal I was wondering if he has any non-hostile interactions. — Unsigned comment by 98.232.136.81 (talk) at 13:14 on 18 November 2011

No. But I recently came up with a good way to fight him if your an archer like myself. after he becomes hostile to you run and close the door to his room. Then run back through the spike-trapped gate and close it. Then just sit back and fire arrows through the gate. Kremlin16 05:37, 27 November 2011 (UTC)

Quest not advancing[edit]

Has anyone had problems taking the journal to advance the quest. I killed Windelius but am unable to take the journal back to Welheim to advance the quest to the second part/??? 70.115.160.53 22:38, 1 December 2011 (UTC)

I had the same problem, I was fortunate enough to have a companion with me (Lydia), and was able to command her to pick it up. Once I got back to the inn, I traded it back into my inventory and was able to progress. — Unsigned comment by 173.58.31.215 (talk) at 04:52 on 31 December 2014 (GMT)

Pressure plate and the 4 stones[edit]

Even if you have the right combination, if the Draugr body is on the pressure plate, then stepping on it may not lower the bridge. Simply move away the dead body and try again. — Unsigned comment by 71.132.201.220 (talk) at 02:08 on 11 December 2011

Locked chest in Word Wall room[edit]

Not sure if anyone else has noticed, but there is a locked chest in the water in the room with the Word Wall and booby-trapped chest. It's underneath the northwest corner of the entry platform. I found it by searching around in the water, facing down, with a torch lit. You can also kind of see it if you're crouched while in the water, but this causes your character to do a bouncy thing that I found a bit annoying (may need to crouch before entering the water). I would add this to the main page, but I'm new (to editing and discussing wikis). Figured I'd let someone more experienced do that.

Puzzle is stuck[edit]

The part where you put the Fish Eagle Serpent Fish combination, the plate that you must stand on, "can get stuck". What I did: I hit the pressure plate with an arrow and after that I could no longer press the plate down, its like it got stuck.--67.224.171.177 02:16, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

Also got the same bug from shooting the pressure plates with arrows, is there any way to reset them? — Unsigned comment by 58.96.86.131 (talk) at 14:51 on 25 April 2012
This happened to me too, very annoying. "Fixed" it by going into console, selecting the pressure plate, and using "moveto player" to pull it out of the floor. Then walked over it to properly trigger the plate. 68.165.77.160 07:24, 19 June 2012 (UTC)WabiWasabi
I also had this problem. My fix involved getting my follower to stand on the pressure plate but that took several tries. — Unsigned comment by Maria dragon (talkcontribs) at 12:22 on 4 May 2014 (GMT)
Tried all the above with no luck. Then just shouted at it (unrelenting force) and it popped up into position.86.135.76.74 12:38, 7 February 2015 (GMT)
Confirmed. Draugr body did not seem to be touching plate but must have been affecting it. Whilst I could grab him, he would not budge from the edge of the plate. Per the above suggestion, Unrelenting Force not only shifted the draugr and his sword, it activated the plate for me and lowered the bridge. - MamaPapaXP 78.32.136.88 02:12, 10 November 2015 (UTC)

I had this same problem, but shouting and nothing else outside of console command fixed. Open the console and click on the plate and use the following command: activate
You're welcome.

Waterfall[edit]

Is the weapon behind the waterfall always a sword, as the page claims? --Debatra 22:36, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

I just cleared Shroud Hearth Barrow for the first time yesterday. My lvl 2 character found a Steel Sword behind the waterfall. I'm guessing that some type of Sword is scripted to always spawn there, its material being tied to your level. Evil-i 02:20, 26 January 2012 (UTC)
It was a steel sword for my higher level character so I guess it's always a steel sword.--86.135.108.88 15:34, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
I found an Elven sword with a character in the mid-40s. Always a sword, perhaps. Always steel? No. --Debatra 22:03, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
I found an Ebony Greatsword with a level 50 Character. It looks like it will either be a regular sword or a greatsword. Oroc Gro-Mazgosh 03:33, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
I saw some sort of Dwarven sword with a level 17 character; I couldn't verify if it was a sword or greatsword since I barely started the main quest and didn't unlock the whirlwind spirit shout. --67.248.246.4 01:21, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

() Steel Sword for me at level 42. Looks to me like it's a random sword/greatsword, perhaps with a weighting to make a Steel Sword the most likely. --Reka 15:44, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

I did find an Ebony Greatsword in an alcove next to a waterfall later on in the barrow, in Shroud Hearth Depths. It's near the wordwall and is only reachable with Whirlwind Sprint. Perhaps this item is levelled, and maybe some people have confused its location with the Steel Sword in Shroud Hearth Barrow? --Reka 15:57, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
The sword in Shroud Hearth Barrow (000dd80b) is taken randomly from the list LItemWeaponSword, this is always a 1H sword and often iron or steel, even for higher levels. The sword in Shroud Hearth Depths (000dd7db) is taken from LItemWeaponGreatSwordBest, which gives a greatsword, the material being better for higher levels. --Alfwyn 16:29, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the taking the time to look into this! --Reka 18:02, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

Impossible to re-enter barrow.[edit]

After completing the initial stage of the quest and receiving the dragon claw I tried to go back to clear out the rest of Shroud Hearth Barrow. Unfortunately it is now impossible to re-enter; every time I activate the door the game crashes. It starts the loading screen - getting as far as displaying my level progress bar - then it freezes. The only way then is to turn the console (Xbox 360) off and reload. But this happens every time, and I know of no fix. Anyone else have this problem, and can anything be done? I also have the same problem trying to enter Helgen Keep, but I assumed it was something unique to that one dungeon. Now I'm worried other areas may be similarly bugged... Athelstan 19:52, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

CHEAP FIX / PC VERSION
this requires a save before you enter it for the first time and get the journal.
After turning in the journel and reciving the Sapphire Claw, it is impossible to re-enter the dungeon do to instant crashing. The only fix to this is the first time you enter "before u leave with the journel" use the player.additem command to put the Sapphire Dragon Claw into your inventory, clear the dungeon, then turn in the journel. To add the claw manualy type , help "Sapphire Dragon Claw", get the item id then type player.additem id 1" — Unsigned comment by 72.193.213.81 (talk) at 00:54 on 11 June 2012

I am stuck inside Shroud Hearth Barrow.[edit]

I finished killing all the undead in Shroud Hearth Barrow, but now the gate to get out of the whole frigging place is barred down. The gate to get into the lever control room is also down so I can't open it back up again. I can't find any pages on the computer that tells me how to get out.

I don't know if this is anothe stupid Skyrim glitch, but please help! — Unsigned comment by 72.224.109.226 (talk) at 15:39 on 13 May 2012‎

It is quite possible that there is another way out or you have missed a lever or switch somewhere, keep looking around. If you are on PC you might be able to use the console to get out. RIM 16:15, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
Just ran into the same problem. After successfully reproducing it several times I figured it out. Basically, there are two "paths" through the room - the higher left side with the pedestal (and the spell book), and the lower right side with two sarcophagi - using either of them closes the gates (and spawns the draugr), but even if you triggered one of them, the other is NOT disabled. How to reproduce this easily: enter the room, go along the left side to the lever (gate further into the barrow is closed by now), flip it (the gate opens), then go back using the lower part of the room (don't even need to kill the draugr). Voila - the lever gate is closed again, the gate out is also closed, you're trapped. 77.93.24.34 10:43, 14 March 2015 (GMT)

Bugs moved from article[edit]

All of these bugs are "perhaps", "sometimes" and "maybe"-style bugs and doesn't really belong on the page. If anybody can confirm the bugs, please re-add them.

  • Sometimes, if you spring the water trap and fall into the water, a glitch may occur which fills the entire barrow with water, even after you escape the trap. You can fix this by reloading a previous save.
  • It's possible that, in the room with the spell tome in the middle, the dust effect on the draugr sarcophagi will trigger, but most of the draugr won't break out, and any that you get to kill may become unsearchable.
    • Its possible to activate most of the draugr using the Unrelenting Force shout directly on each sarcophagi one at a time. Only the center upright one cannot be activated this way. Philbert (talk) 03:31, 14 September 2013 (GMT)
  • If not searched through during the quest, the door right after the pendulum axes may become locked, thus keeping you from ever going further than the pit filled with oil.
    • I can confirm this one, I came here looking for info on this. I'm not sure what is meant by "If not searched through during the quest", I completed the full Shroud Hearth Barrow quest (searched through everything) and then came back after it respawned, the iron door behind the pendulum trap after the oil pit with the skeletons is now locked and requires a key. No idea what key, but not one that I have. EllaFirebird (talk) 13:29, 16 September 2013 (GMT)
      • You can get through the door without a key using the wooden plate trick (hold the plate up in front of you and run through the door). One of the draugr on the other side has the Shroud Hearth Barrow key, which will unlock the door. This 'bug' was probably caused by not picking up the key on the first run through (for the lock-picking experience). EllaFirebird (talk) 01:32, 30 September 2013 (GMT)
  • In drawbridge room, it is possible that the four artifacts that are needed to drop the bridge will not activate.
  • In the room with the drawbridge, if you kill the draugr so that its body is on the drawbridge trigger, the drawbridges won't work.
    • Dragging the draugr off the switch plate resolves this.

Room with no door but chest and other loot inside[edit]

sp before you get to were there are 5 skeletons all surronding a pool of colorful water you will see a hole in the wall showing a room. there is a fire right over the hole. so i was trying to get in legit but couldn't so then i thought maybe i got there after doing other stuff, well i finished the whole barrow and no luck, so i used tcl and got in there to find that there is no legit way to get in. the chest shows minor loot like potions and shield and there is a sword on a shelf and a potion of stamina on the desk, i think this is a bug right? — Unsigned comment by 173.18.127.161 (talk) at 00:13 on 15 December 2012‎

Since it wasn't signed, no idea how long ago this was posted. There are handles next to 3 of the sarcophagi. The peep hole in the wall is a clue to look for them. One of the perpendicular ones unveils a skeleton with some minor armor loot packed on it, the other does nothing. The one you're talking about (as you turn back to the way you came in) has its handle on the right which pops off the cover of the sarcophagus revealing the room. 76.178.149.38 23:29, 28 December 2012 (GMT)

Puzzle door problem[edit]

On xbox the first time I have attempted to open the nordic puzzle lock door with the sapphire claw, the door will NOT open. The claw combination is "moth" "owl" "wolf". Despite moving all rings, attempting to activate the door after properly setting the combination just results in the gun trap to the left of the door firing and the door doesn't budge. I have never had this issue on PS3. Is there any way to get the nordic door open when this occurs? Drankinatty (talk) 10:05, 22 June 2013 (GMT)

I know this was posted a while ago, but in case anyone else is having this problem, a possible solution is to set the rings to owl, owl, owl - then attempt to activate the door (trap will fire), then try the correct combination again. EllaFirebird (talk) 13:33, 16 September 2013 (GMT)

Stucked at Shrouded Hearth Dephts[edit]

When i get to the Shrouded Hearth Depths I kill all Draugr inside but the bridge doesnt falls... did someone have the same problem? — Unsigned comment by 177.140.213.158 (talk) at 16:18 on 23 January 2014

-I had the same problem. It happens because the pressure plate on the outside is pressed down by something constantly. You can use a shout to push away the object on it, it will work afterwards.- — Unsigned comment by 94.21.182.166 (talk) at 07:05 on 15 March 2015
-The respondent is confusing two different bridges, the first bridge is the one with the 4 animal stones you have to rotate into the correct pattern and then step on a floor switch. The 2nd bridge, the bridge inside the Shroud Heart Depths cell, is inside the room with all the coffins, skeletons, and draugr where you have to kill all the enemies before the bridge falls down. It's a sequence of kill triggers that, as you kill enemies, more coffins open. The last coffin to open has a boss draugr and opens after you've killed all the other enemies. Killing all the enemies makes the bridge drop down and the hidden door beyond the bridge open. I've also run into this glitch, and the cause in my case seemed to be that one of the coffins didn't load with a draugr inside. The game won't open the last coffin because I didn't kill all the scripted enemies (because one doesn't exist) and the only solution I've found has been to use the tcl command to clip out of bounds and bypass the bridge. Weird Area in Word of Power Room.[edit]

I'm playing the Xbox 360 version and I have found a really weird area in the room that you get Kyne's Peace. After recieving the shout head to the left down into the water. Moving across the wall just to the left of the broken walk way there is a secotion of wall that I can walk through. In this area all that can be seen is what appears to be the sky with some stars and a huge square of water down below. Turning around an looking up there is what appears to be a coin purse. I haven't figured out a way to get it yet since you are still considered to be in water and you can't use spells or any weapons. Walking toward it just takes you back out of the area and I can't seem to fall down into the water below. I was just wandering if anyone else has experianced this or has figured out how to get the coin purse. Also, I have been in this area with two different charaters so I don't think it is just an isolated glitch.

Just figured out that the coin purse is actually the one beside the sword and soul gem across the brocken walk way. Still curious to see if I can get intothe square of water below. — Unsigned comment by 66.87.81.20 (talk) at 21:11 on 27 January 2015 (GMT)

Corridor Door needing a key[edit]

I think there's a glitch with my game. The corridor where there's a trip wire that triggers swinging blades just after the oil pool and the skeletons needs a key to open it. Is there anything I can do? I'm on the 360. 86.180.29.187 19:12, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

71.90.153.70 05:57, 10 July 2015 (UTC)unfortunately, on the Xbox there isn't anything you can do. It's a glitch that's happened to me, but the key is looted off a draugr past said door. The only recommendation would be to reload an old save or try going back to the barrow a few days later to see if it resets.

You can get through this door by using the wooden plate/wooden bowl & whirlwind sprint glitch, then kill the draugr to get the key.

Moved from Article[edit]

Character with 100 sneak and "Light Foot" does not operate the pressure plate for the puzzle but does operate the pressure plate which drops the wooden bridge.

It's been my experience that the light foot perk doesn't affect pressure plates that are required for puzzles, and I can't see any bugs to that effect mentioned in the USKP fix list. It occurs to me that this may have been intended as a suggested cause for the bug it was listed under (about the plate not triggering if something was near it), but seeing as how that vn tag has been there for a while, this may be as good a time as any to ask if a specific cause for that bug can be determined through the game's files. The other possibility is that it was intended as a separate entry, in which case it seems unusually specific, and should probably undergo similar testing to determine if it can ONLY occur with the relevant perk and a sneak skill of 100. Strategy to clear the Depths[edit]

When rather low level, the sheer quantity of skeletons and draugr can cause problems, especially if you don't have many potions. Presuming that you've progressed in the main quest far enough to have 'FUS', all you have to do is simply not enter the room and find yourself trapped inside. Stand outside, shout at the coffins, which will cause them to open, and then shoot the attackers with arrows. Move around a bit and watch your aim, rinse, and repeat. When you do finally have to enter the room, the only enemies that you'll be trapped in the room with are the two rear draugr and finally the boss.Agmen (talk) 03:42, 25 May 2016 (UTC)

Better directions to water chest[edit]

I struggled using the directions here to find the chest in the word wall room under the water and foudn these directions to be better.

Starting at the boss chest head towards the bridge that leads to the word wall. Immediately after passing by the wooden posts (when the ground changes from stone to wood) turn right. There is a little wooden path that wraps around. Move forward and you will fall off into the water. In the water if you turn 180 degrees around you will see an alcove that has long stringy roots. Walk towards that alcove and right before the end you will rise up out of the water and stop swimming. Look down, you are now standing on the chest. — Unsigned comment by 98.212.177.103 (talk) at 14:36 on 7 January 2021 (UTC)
