Is there a difference between Greywater Gorge and Sunderstone Gorge?[edit]

They seem to be the same place acorrding to the map and the letter I received from "a friend". Babytoke 06:19, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

No, they're the same place, which is why Greywater Gorge redirects here. --NepheleTalk 05:57, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
Is this note and redirect still necessary? I've just been to this location because of a Letter from a Friend, and both the letter and the quest journal entry mentioned "Sunderstone Gorge" by name, not "Greywater Gorge". The bug report on the page says "This place is referred to as "Greywater Gorge" in game letters and your quest journal." I wonder if this has been fixed by a recent official update? I'm playing on an Xbox 360 with version 1.9.31.0.8. I don't see any mention on the Patches page of this having been fixed though. Strange. Daric 00:34, 5 June 2014 (GMT)
Could be a stealth fix. Patch 1.9 is known to have stealth renamed several npcs (like this on), so I guess it's not inconceivable. --AN|L (talk) 00:41, 5 June 2014 (GMT)
Yes, patch 1.9 did fix it. The redirect is still needed though. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 00:43, 5 June 2014 (GMT)

Where Exactly is Sunderstone Gorge?[edit]

Where can i find this place? It is apparently a location for the "Fire Breath" shout. •What hold •What direction is the entrance facing? •Is there any nearby questline locations I could fast travel to?

Please and thank you!— Unsigned comment by Shayin (talkcontribs)

I cannot recall the specifics, but, as stated on the page, it is south of Gjulkar's monument, which is a stone pillar in the plains west of Whiterun.— Unsigned comment by 205.188.116.138 (talk)

Find the city of Riverwood on your map. Follow the river South-West. The river opens into a lake. Notice that the river/lake turns or curves upward (pointing North-West). Go to the tip of the lake (the most North-West "point"). Set out from this location, heading North-West. You will come to a mountainous area where the cave is. (See the mini-mountain on your map that the lake is "pointing to"? Travel toward that mini-mountain.) Keep a lookout on your directional map bar, there seem to be no other locations near Sunderstone Gorge, so the cave icon should be obvious. As you reach the mountain, you will have to travel over it or around it, because the entrance is on the opposite side of the mini-mountain. It is in quadrant "E6" if you go to this map, online: GameBanshee Skyrim Map WARNING: This may be considered a "spoiler" map. --Amsuko 01:56, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
Alternately, if you've found Fort Sungard, go around the plateau the fort sits on to the path heading southeast (there's a signpost pointing out the direction to go for several cities/settlements). Follow the path SE a bit and you should see the icon pop up on your compass. Keep an eye out for a fire (more easily seen at night) and a tent - there's a hunter's camp very near the gorge. Coming from this direction, the camp is on the right. The path hooks left and gets overgrown, and you'll see some piles of stones (with bones heaped on them) leading up to the entrance. Circumventing portion of Sunderstone Gorge[edit]

I removed the following from the article. The aim should be to describe the location, not ways to work around the game. Often those can't be reliable reproduced by different characters (e.g. different height) too. --Alfwyn 14:26, 18 January 2012 (UTC)

It is possible to circumvent a significant portion of the lower area of Sunderstone Gorge, by leaping up the sheer wall that the player would fall down after reaching the word wall. Using the urn as a jumping point, and aiming into the corner formed by the wall and the cliff, it's reasonably easy to reach the top of the cliff. Once the cliff has been scaled, activating the nearby alchemy station will bypass the barred entrance, which in turn gives access to the chains which allow the player to exit the small alcove they find themselves in, as well as access to the word wall.
Thanks, this helps. I've edited the article including your instructions. 50.0.25.231 08:48, 26 February 2013 (GMT)

possible new bug[edit]

I was on a radiant quest for the companions and had to find a hunting bow in Greywater Gorge, i was directed to sunderstone gorge and after clearing the warlocks the quest marker pointed to the boss chest by the word wall, there was no bow inside and on emptying the chest the marker still pointed to it and i could not complete the quest. has this happened before? and is there a way around it?--- — Unsigned comment by 109.148.110.171 (talk) at 13:40 on 15 April 2012

Had you been to this location before, and cleared it? This has been a common issue with the radiant quests in this game. If the boss has been killed or boss chest emptied in a location, and then you are sent there for another quest later, you may not be able to complete the quest. ABCface 14:21, 15 April 2012 (UTC)

About the unable to unlock Sun Bug[edit]

Just encountered this on the Xbox 360. However, after much reloading and reading trying to find out how I can do a work around, I realized that it says that Parthanax is supposed to unlock it for you... but I had already unlocked the first word so he taught me the 2nd. So it made me wonder... and I was able to spend a dragon soul to learn the last word, or at least it says I have... not 100% sure as it seems my character is still only saying the first two words, however I do seem to be getting the 100 second recharge... Anyone know for sure about such things from more extensive experiments? AbsolutgrndZer0 (talk) 07:03, 17 February 2013 (GMT)

Ok, a quick follow up... After some testing on my horse named "Jennica's Horse" via saving and reloading multiple times, I've determined that I am in fact doing that 25% more damage to the horse after spending the soul to unlock Inferno. Hopefully this information can help others. AbsolutgrndZer0 (talk) 07:28, 17 February 2013 (GMT)

Fire Breath?[edit]

My husband and I are playing Skyrim legendary edition on the PS3. He has all three words to Fire Breath, yet has never once been to Sundered Gorge. The grey beards sent him there and the wall had another fire breath word, yet he already knew all three. Is this a glitch or is there another way to learn Fire Breath? — Unsigned comment by ‎24.114.80.112 (talk) at 22:49 on 16 July 2013

I'm not entirely sure, but this might help to explain why this happened. Forfeit (talk) 22:55, 16 July 2013 (GMT)

The Circle of Oil and the Fire Atronach[edit]

The Atronach in the room with the word wall is not summoned by lighting the circle of oil. In fact, when I went through here, it was the Atronach itself that lit the oil. Neither is it summoned by one of the two magic users in the room, since I shot both of them dead quite a bit before it appeared. It seems to be called in by an invisible trigger located on the slightly raised circle of stone that is surrounded by the circle of oil, since the portal opened and it appeared when I reached that point. Maybe someone more expert than myself with the Creation Kit could check to see if there is indeed a trigger there? Robinwitch1 (talk) 06:42, 6 September 2013 (GMT)

Yes, in my experience the enemies lit the oil before i had the chance as well. The frost atronach was summoned, but I wasn't able to tell if it was something place-related or done by an enemy, so I definitely think it's worth looking into via the CK to see what actually causes it to appear. — ABCface 13:07, 6 September 2013 (GMT)
Are you sure you had a Frost Atronach? Mine was a Fire Atronach, as would be expected from the general theme of the area. The most useful thing to find out from the CK would be the size and shape of the trigger. Can you get around it by staying away from that circle of stone surrounded by oil, creeping past on the side perhaps? Or does it stretch across the whole room and is thus unavoidable? Robinwitch1 (talk) 16:07, 6 September 2013 (GMT)
Ack, it was definitely a flame atronach, my bad. That's what I meant. — ABCface 21:25, 6 September 2013 (GMT)

() I cleared this Cave yesterday and can say this: I killed the two mages sneakily with a bow, nothing happened. Lit the circle with my fire breath, nothing happened. Steeped where the oil were, nothing happened. As soon as I steeped in the center of the circle, the portal opened and the Fire Atronach appeared. So I can confirm what Robinwitch1 said.Digus (talk) 15:35, 26 January 2014 (GMT)

I cleared the gorge a while back. Went back today and Fire atronach was already present. It lit the oil and promptly sizzled itself. What is the determining factor for the appearance or presence of the atronach?--Beezer1029 (talk) 20:27, 25 February 2014 (GMT)
The Atronach is 0x0008bab4, which is initially disabled. It will be "summoned" (enabled) by it's activate parent (XAPR0 in CSList) - it is an activator located in the middle of that circle of oil. Coming near that will trigger it. --Alfwyn (talk) 21:00, 25 February 2014 (GMT)

Invisible shield[edit]

The mage leaning on the wall on the catwalk above as you walk in from the entrance is surrounded by some sort of invisible collision geometry. I have never been able to hit him from range and always figured it was auto-aim and/or killcam screwing things up, but I just shut down the AI and toggled off collision to test this. I watched my arrows strike and stick into an invisible barrier from every angle around that mage. It literally isn't possible to hit him until he moves off his idle marker. --67.142.170.21 17:15, 14 April 2015 (GMT)

I just went in and tested with the USKP and had the same issue. Since they haven't fixed it, I'll report it. Robin Hood  (talk) 18:19, 14 April 2015 (GMT)
