The NPCs on this list are considered "Essential" by the game. If any of them are killed at any time, you will receive a message stating:

With this character's death, the thread of prophecy is severed.
Restore a saved game to restore the weave of fate,
or persist in the doomed world you have created.

Asciene Rane Ebonheart, Grand Council Chambers Asciene Rane is the only way of reaching Mournhold without using a Recall spell or Barilzar's Mazed Band
Barenziah Mournhold, Royal Palace: Barenziah's Chambers
Effe-Tei Mournhold, Royal Palace: Reception Area Effe-Tei is your only way back to Vvardenfell unless you have a Mark set there or you use a teleport cheat.
Fedris Hler Mournhold, Temple District, Reception Area
Gavas Drin Mournhold, Office of the Lord Archcanon
Karrod Mournhold, Royal Palace: Throne Room Karrod gives you one of the pieces needed to forge Trueflame, the sword of Nerevarine.
King Hlaalu Helseth Mournhold, Royal Palace Helseth gives you several quests, but once you have finished them and he is of no more use to you, you may kill him. Besides, he's got a really nice ring.
Radac Stungnthumz Bamz-Amschend, Radac's Forge He may be killed in order to trap his soul, after The Blade of Nerevar quest.
Tienius Delitian Mournhold, Royal Palace Throne Room Similarly to King Helseth, after completing Delitian's quests, he may be killed without further recourse. You may wish to do this in order to obtain his sword, Gravedigger, an extremely powerful enchanted Daedric dai-katana.
