Bug with Top Edit Gadget

I've started having problems with the gadget that adds an [edit] link for the lead section of a page. Highlighting the last letter of an article title (e.g. the "l" in UESPWiki:Community Portal) automatically highlights "[edit]" and a newline, making it very problematic to keep the gadget on. —Legoless (talk) 14:38, 13 March 2016 (UTC)

I think that must be a problem with the browser, cuz I'm not getting that behaviour in Chrome. I can't think of anything we can do to work around it off-hand. Robin Hood  (talk) 20:09, 13 March 2016 (UTC)
I'm using Chrome v49.0.2623.87. Just tested it with Firefox and I can't replicate it. —Legoless (talk) 01:12, 14 March 2016 (UTC)
I'm using the same version of Chrome (on Win 10, in case it makes a difference). Is it possible it's an extension causing the odd behaviour, maybe? Robin Hood  (talk) 02:05, 14 March 2016 (UTC)
Tried it in incognito mode and it still occurs. It seems to only happen if I select part of the title, e.g. by not highlighting the namespace. Selecting the whole title will remove the [edit]. —Legoless (talk) 02:30, 14 March 2016 (UTC)
Very odd. I do get an "edit" if I copy & paste more than one line, even though the "edit" button itself doesn't get highlighted, but just copying the last letter or part of the title, I only get that and nothing else. Robin Hood  (talk) 02:35, 14 March 2016 (UTC)

Keep me logged in @ Safari iOS9

Discussion moved from UESPWiki talk:Getting Started

Not sure if this is by design or a specific issue of my Safari browser, but I get logged out ever so often even with the keep me logged in option turned on. Apparently esp. change of tabs immediatly logs me out. As on the one hand a tablet is the most convenient for parallel use with the consoles and on the other crosschecking e.g. links on a second tab is a must, this is quite a drawback. - HomoLudens (talk) 08:55, 24 March 2016 (UTC)

I don't have access to iOS/Safari but I'll see if I can find a way to test this somehow and figure out the issue. Offhand I have no idea...we don't do anything browser specific that I know of. -- Daveh (talk) 15:18, 24 March 2016 (UTC)

ESO Map Search Changes

I made a few tweaks to the ESO map search function in order to let it better find things like This One's One Me and M'aiq. It seems to work fine that I can see but if any notices it doesn't work well for certain searches let me know.

I'll be making a bunch of other tweaks to the map so if something breaks or you don't like a particular change let me know here as well. -- Daveh (talk) 15:22, 24 March 2016 (UTC)

Request to Remove an Undeserved Warning

I didn't know whether to put this here or on the Vandalism discussion page, but I have a request for the administrators that involves a warning for Vandalism.

Recently the user Ukraine007 (User talk:Ukraine007) was given a warning that I (and I assume Woahbro as well) believe to be baseless. I read through the Blocking and Warning policy page and I didn't find any examples of an official warning being removed before, so I thought it would be best to bring this to the attention of you, the admins. --MetaCthulhu (talk) 19:48, 7 April 2016 (UTC)

Done, thanks for bringing it up. —Legoless (talk) 19:53, 7 April 2016 (UTC)

Help Link in sidebar

The help link in the sidebar takes me to MediaWiki's Help:Contents instead of our Help:Contents -- SarthesArai Talk 16:07, 18 April 2016 (UTC)

Yes☑ Works, thanks RH ;-) -- SarthesArai Talk 16:39, 18 April 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the catch. I'd reverted to the default page about 1.5 weeks ago, since the customization we'd had in place on the sidebar didn't seem to be necessary any more. Now I understand why it was still there. :) Odd that MediaWiki defaults to their own wiki rather than the current wiki. I fixed it a slightly different way this time, since I gather from comments in various places that the sidebar might not be the only place that link is used. ESO Dark Brotherhood DLC on PTS

Another ESO DLC has been released to the PTS and the usual updates are below:

  • Skills Update -- Mostly done...there are some missing skills (including the new DB passives) but I won't do a full skill dump until the DB DLC is actually released.
  • New Sets -- Done!
  • Item Summaries -- Done...only CP160 Gold items have been dumped and item links still refer to them as "V16".
  • Files
  • Map Update -- Done...in the process of adding locations.
  • A lot of code updates are needed for the DLC:
  • uespLog -- In progress. The updated source is available on BitBucket if you really need it.
  • Item Links -- Update icons.
  • Item Links -- Change VR to CP.
  • Item Links -- Change in enchantment glyph levels.
  • Item Links -- New alchemy effects and poisons. Mostly done...will need a complete item dump and test/tweak once DB hits live.
  • Item Links -- Additional item types/subtypes.
  • Skill Viewer -- Update spell cost calculation.
  • Skill Tooltip -- Magicka/Stamina cost color.
  • Item Traits -- Update name changes.
  • Character Data -- Add crafting bag.

Problems submitting pages

I've been having some issues in the last couple days when submitting edits to pages: it takes a long time to load, and then when finally done, it just takes me to a blank white page. When I go back to check the page's history, the edit didn't go through, and it can take a couple times. Specifically, I've been recently working on the names pages such as Lore:Dunmer Names, and it happens even working with small sections. ~ Alarra (talk) 05:44, 8 May 2016 (UTC)

Part of the problem here is the size, combined with the number and complexity of the templates in use. {{NameList}}, in particular, is fairly hard on the server, since it runs a couple of sub-templates for each name in the list. I'm not sure we can do much about that short of switching those templates back to regular links, but I'll give it some thought and see if I can come up with any optimizations. The blank white page is something Dave will have to deal with. I'm pretty sure it's just PHP or Apache timing out on the page edit and then returning a blank page as a result. I believe he normally tracks this page, but if he doesn't respond in the next day or two, I'll send him an e-mail. Robin Hood  (talk) 06:25, 8 May 2016 (UTC)
Not sure if this has anything to do with NameList issues, but I've noticed that in the family names section for ESO on the Dunmer page, the Hlaalu FamilyList is only displaying the first 15, despite there currently being 18 there: nothing looks wrong with the syntax, and they all appear to be valid pages. ~ Alarra (talk) 05:32, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
The template was only designed to support up to 15 names. While it would be easy enough to add a few, I think I can rewrite it to support as many as we want. I'll have a look at it tomorrow. Robin Hood  (talk) 05:47, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
The template has now been updated to support however many names you want. There are slight changes to the syntax, however, so you now have to specify the family name explicitly using the familyname parameter, and you can no longer use the startat parameter at all (though you should no longer need to). I had the bot make the necessary changes to the various Lore pages. Robin Hood  (talk) 19:13, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
The various other NameList-like templates have also been updated. Some of the "NewPP" statistics (hidden in the HTML source of the page) are significantly lower for those pages now, so you may find them easier to deal with. Let me know. Robin Hood  (talk) 20:12, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

Brief Downtime Expected (Completed)

Our server host needs to apply a security update to our firewall and this will require a short downtime. I've been told 15 minutes but it may be shorter or longer. I don't have an expected time for the service interruption yet but if/when I do I'll update it here.

Update -- Estimated service time is tomorrow, 15th May, at 7AM EST. -- Daveh (talk) 16:44, 14 May 2016 (UTC)

Maintenance on the firewall has been completed. -- Daveh (talk) 11:24, 15 May 2016 (UTC)

ESO Dark Brotherhood DLC

The Dark Brotherhood comes out on PC today and so begins the usual round of updates. Getting everything done will likely take a few weeks so if there's a priority item let me know.

  • uespLog update -- v0.70 is available with changes for the DB update.
  • Files -- All are complete copies with diff files from both the previous upload and the DB PTS upload.
  • Map update -- No map image update needed. Still have to add a lot of the DB locations.
  • Achievement data update
  • CP data update
  • Icons update
  • Item data update
  • Skill data update -- Updated again on 6 June to fix a few missing skills and passive learned levels.
  • Skill coefficients update
  • API Data update -- Done!
  • Revisit changes to VR levels in all code.
  • Add poison slots to build viewer.
  • Add crafting bag to character data viewer (data is there and displayed in "All Items" but currently cannot be viewed separately).

-- Daveh (talk) 16:20, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

A question... I've uploaded some data manually, and am now checking the new books, specifically the texts. But some of them appear incomplete, for example this one - http://esolog.uesp.net/viewlog.php?action=view&record=book&id=2882 - if you look at the end of the text, the sentence is cut off and instead there is "th#STR#userName{Tiburon". Tiburon is my in-game username... anyways, have I done something wrong with the addon? Is this a bug? Tib (talk) 15:53, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the notice! You haven't done anything wrong. It looks like the addon or parser is messing up on joining long lines like this. I'll take a look and see why it is doing it and how to fix it. Once it is fixed then records like this should be fixed as well. -- Daveh (talk) 16:01, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
Ok, good to know, ty Daveh! Tib (talk) 16:20, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
So it should be fixed now, both the book texts and the original bug with the web submission form. If you happen to run into the same or similar issue again just let me know! -- Daveh (talk) 16:21, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
Awesome! Thanks for fixing it so quickly. Tib (talk) 16:53, 1 June 2016 (UTC)

() I have another question regarding the data. For example, see this http://esolog.uesp.net/viewlog.php?action=view&record=book&id=2983 - as you see, there is no book text although data appears to have been uploaded? What causes this and is there anything that can be done about it? Thank you! Tib (talk) 11:19, 14 June 2016 (UTC)

Redirected to Mobile

Every few days I get redirected from the UESP home page to the mobile UESP home page when opening UESP for the first time that day. This has been going on for the past month or so. It can take either a single refresh or a number of attempts to reach the regular PC page.

Latest Chrome version on Windows 7 each time. I haven't a clue why it redirects me to the mobile site or if it's happening to anyone else. Only happens to UESP, no other websites, so I assume it's a (benign) issue on UESP's side. Vely►t►e 01:23, 3 June 2016 (UTC)

A few people have mentioned this since the last time I tried to fix it by clearing the Squid cache which may have worked for a few related issues but not all. I actually managed to see this happen myself this morning when I used another browser to test something anonymously. I'll keep digging and see if I can figure out what is causing the mistaken redirect. -- Daveh (talk) 17:10, 3 June 2016 (UTC)

Files1 DDOS

Just a heads up that files1.uesp.net received a large (6.4gbps // 1.7mpps) DDOS about 30 minutes ago which caused our host to nullroute it which makes it inaccessible. This impacts a lot of the image loading facilities of the wiki and other services. I've asked for it to be restored as soon as possible but this depends on how long the DDOS lasts. If I find out any more I'll let you know. -- Daveh (talk) 02:06, 4 June 2016 (UTC)

I've redirected all map images to be loaded from content2 while files1 is inaccessible. That should be the majority of the image requests. -- Daveh (talk) 02:20, 4 June 2016 (UTC)
Similarly, I've redirected all ESO icon requests to be loaded from content3. -- Daveh (talk) 02:24, 4 June 2016 (UTC)
files1.uesp.net will be inaccessible for 24 hours (estimated anyways, it may come back sooner). If you notice any significant loss of service let me know so I can try and redirect it in the meantime. -- Daveh (talk) 02:41, 4 June 2016 (UTC)
Note that although our search service is hosted on files1 it uses the internal site network so is unaffected by the files1 outage. -- Daveh (talk) 02:44, 4 June 2016 (UTC)
Files1 is back up although I'll be waiting until tomorrow to revert changes to send requests to it to make sure the attack doesn't occur again. -- Daveh (talk) 02:03, 5 June 2016 (UTC)
I've reverted back to using files1 for image hosting as it was prior to the DDOS. If anyone notices anything broken let me know! -- Daveh (talk) 13:40, 6 June 2016 (UTC)

Requesting namechange: Anonytroll

Keeping in line with renaming myself across my TES accounts for marketability, I'd like to have this account to be renamed to Atrayonis. Anonytroll was juvenile when I picked it over a decade ago and I like to pretend I'm more of a unique snowflake nowadays. Anonytroll (talk) 18:54, 9 June 2016 (UTC)

All done, I've renamed your account to unique snowflake Atrayonis. :) Robin Hood  (talk) 18:59, 9 June 2016 (UTC)

Email function broken?

Is there something wrong with the email function? The last few private messages I've sent haven't gotten to the intended recipients, and when I checked the box to email me a copy, I didn't receive anything either. Zul do onikaanLaan tinvaak 21:11, 19 June 2016 (UTC)

I tried sending myself an email and I did receive it. Forfeit (talk) 18:44, 20 June 2016 (UTC)
There was a temporary issue with the e-mail that was fixed a week or so ago but there remains issue with mail being sent to Hotmail/Outlook addresses bouncing. I keep trying to request our servers be taken off the bounce list (there is no reason they should be on there) but it tends to not last very long. I'll keep working at it though and see if I can find a solution. -- Daveh (talk) 23:04, 20 June 2016 (UTC)

Editing ESO skills marked for verification after Update 10

I've been editing a few things for the Templar pages and noticed several skills marked as requiring verification after Update 10. I've made the required changes, but how do I start the process of un-marking them? Circuitous Talk 16:11, 26 June 2016 (UTC)

There's a parameter |update=X in the template at the top of the skill page. X needs to be replaced with the current update number (currently 10) in order to make the outdated-notice go away. RobinHood70 is writing a program for his bot to update the passives automatically, so this should be no problem when the next update comes out (at least I hope he is still working). -- SarthesArai Talk 16:19, 26 June 2016 (UTC)
He is, or at least he'd like to be. He keeps getting interrupted by other things, or having bad days where he can't think straight, etc. He will be working on it as time permits. He may also stop talking about himself in the third person at some point soon. :Þ Robin Hood  (talk) 00:53, 27 June 2016 (UTC)

ESO PTS Update 11 -- Shadows of the Hist

Update 11 comes out on the PTS today and so begins another round of updates. This update only has 2? new zones/group dungeons so might be a little less work than the previous updates.

  • Map Update -- Done! Still have to link all the new dungeon maps and add locations to them.
  • Icons Update -- Done!
  • Skills Update -- Done!
  • Items Update -- Done!
  • CP Update -- I don't believe there are any CP changes so I'll wait until the update is live to update the database.
  • API Update

Spam Blacklists

Currently, we have two separate spam blacklist pages: MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist and UESPWiki:Spam Blacklist. The MediaWiki page is the default for the extension, and will always be used, no matter what; the other one is just a secondary page. I don't terribly see the need for both, does anyone else? I have two thoughts about that, which are at least partly exclusive of one another:

First, is there any reason I shouldn't just merge the two into a single page? If I do, the MediaWiki page would be the more logical one, and we could then delete the UESPWiki one and give the blacklist extension one less page to check. Should I bother with a history merge if we go that route (which makes edits look a bit strange when the histories overlap), or just bulk copy the list over? Many of the edit summaries are just "adding another spam link" and the like, but there are some potentially interesting comments about additions/removals.

On the flip side, do we want to remove both lists altogether and "start fresh"? Looking at Nephele's comments on UESPWiki:Spam Blacklist, it looks like this list has been a source of high CPU usage in the past when the site has been attacked by spambots. To keep it to a minimum, it used to be that admins would regularly add and remove links as they started becoming problematic or fell out of use. I think there was a bit of a knowledge gap created when many of the experienced admins stopped editing for one reason or another shortly after Skyrim came out, so maintaining these lists fell out of common practice. At this point, I have to wonder how many of these links would even be problems anymore, and if the Abuse Filter would catch a lot of them in its own right. Robin Hood  (talk) 19:42, 22 July 2016 (UTC)

I wasn't aware we even had two separate spam lists. I think the most sense would be at least to merge them if not re-evaluate then as you mention. -- Daveh (talk) 14:02, 25 July 2016 (UTC)
Just cleaning up the links, the MediaWiki:Spamprotectiontext needs updating by an admin, though it probably needs reworded too, but I am unsure what exactly is going on with the blacklist, or even if we need this page anymore. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 23:23, 14 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for noticing that. I apparently dropped the ball when I deleted the Spam Blacklist page. For now, I've just relinked the page, but in theory, nobody should ever get that message, I don't believe. I'll want to review our abuse filter and see if there's anything there that we might prefer to use the spam blacklist for. If not, though, we can probably remove it entirely. Robin Hood  (talk) 00:38, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

Video ads at bottom of pages

I'm a new user of UESPWiki, so I'm not sure how long these ads have been present, but most of the pages I load up have a small video ad at the bottom of the page. The ads cause severe responsiveness problems for me in Chrome as I scroll around through a page or try to follow links. The ads have a little control where you can choose "never show video ads", but doing so doesn't seem to accomplish anything.

I examined the HTML to figure out if I could easily block them on my end, and found the way they are coded to be very strange, although it might be standard these days -- the HTML element is an iframe that goes to a URL under tpc.googlesyndication.com/safeframe, and the iframe's NAME attribute contains a full HTML document complete with its own DOCTYPE statement and javascript. Seemingly the "safeframe" injects the contents of the NAME attribute into the actual HTML of the page. This seems to me like a very shady way for an ad to be delivered, potentially very insecure. Wanted to be sure the admins were aware of it. If this is a normal way for ads to be delivered, then my only complaint is that these particular ads impact the usefulness of the site and don't respect my inputs to stop showing themselves.

--Unregistered user "Steve-o": 108.7.186.115 20:39, 23 July 2016 (UTC)

AdBlock Plus will get rid of them, if you want to install that. Just be wary of imitations. Either way, I'll send the site owner an e-mail and point him towards this discussion, as he's ultimately the one in control of our ads. Robin Hood  (talk) 02:28, 24 July 2016 (UTC)
I just wanted to add to this that I've been seeing responsiveness issues recently as well, seemingly caused by some of the video ads. I'm not sure what's changed, but a few months ago this issue didn't exist for me. I also don't remember video ads auto-playing before, which they seem to have started doing. --Enodoc (talk) 10:07, 24 July 2016 (UTC)
I'll take a look from the ad display end to see if there's anything I can do to filter these sort of ads out. If the offending ads are from a particular advertiser or topic let me know as it will help in narrowing down and filtering them out. -- Daveh (talk) 14:04, 25 July 2016 (UTC)
Would it also be possible to prevent ads from displaying while editing or previewing an edit? I wouldn't mind supporting the site by whitelisting it on AdBlock if they only appeared while browsing, but having them appear even while editing makes things very annoying. — TheRealLurlock (talk) 20:46, 25 July 2016 (UTC)
Daveh: I created an account and was going to paste the iframe code into a page in my userspace for you to look at, but, I got a bunch of warnings about the links and the edit being too large for a new user. Regardless: The video ad that I remember was some sort of bizarre dash-cam video of somebody driving up to a crashed helicopter. No idea what it was actually for. It read "by VIDEOGATE" in the upper right corner. There were other videos, though, and frequently the ad didn't even load properly for me, which I think might be part of the reason that the pages were unresponsive. --Steve-o (talk) 13:55, 26 July 2016 (UTC)

() I wanted to give an update on this, as it seems there has been a resurgence of video-based ads, and once again, page loading has suffered. Rather frequently if a video ad is on the page, all page functionality (including typing in the edit box and scrolling the page) suffers, and eventually the page jams up completely and can't even be refreshed. In these situations I have to Ctrl+K the page to duplicate it, and hope that the original unsticks enough to close it later on. --Enodoc (talk) 14:00, 11 September 2016 (UTC)

Just wanted to add a related issue I have been having with ads. Alot of the time now when i am looking things up on the wiki, i am doing so from within the steam browser... which makes it (as far as i know) impossible to use adblock or similar to protect onesself. I have had several instances in the last week of the page i was viewing / going to re-directed to something else entirely. Today it happened to be a phishing site with a recurring "warning" popup which prevented me from closing the steam browser. I ended up having to hard-close skyrim w/o saving to get away from it. I don't know how well protected the steam browser is, so it could have been something much worse. Just hoping to bring this to someone's attention to hopefully reduce the number of malicious ads which pop up. (also: i have never edited / contributed to a wiki before, so if i screwed something up here, then i am very sorry.) — Unsigned comment by 99.112.16.57 (talk) at 17:43 on 6 October 2016 (UTC)

() I just noticed this weekend Google Video Ads have started loading in the footer of every page. I'm using Chrome and this is incredibly annoying because it keeps auto scrolling the page down to the video. --73.212.102.24 12:37, 18 April 2017 (UTC)

Same here. I'm being forced to the bottom of some pages and it won't even let me scroll up again. I have to reload the page to be able to do anything else. --Enodoc (talk) 12:43, 18 April 2017 (UTC)

Lorebooks

I've been chatting for a while with Alan from Lorebooks.com who had a neat idea of doing a nice book presentation in the browser. There's a quick demo on the site and another better one you can view to get the basic idea. They are close to getting to test it and would like to try it out on some of our ES books in our Lore section.

Just posting this to get some feedback on the idea and exactly how to integrate it in the site. My thoughts were that we should keep the wiki text version and offer the Lorebook version as an option, perhaps tab views or buttons or something to switch between the views but other suggestions are welcome. -- Daveh (talk) 16:33, 28 July 2016 (UTC)

Looks good but it did make my browser (firefox) temporarily freeze when loading those pages. I like the idea of letting people read them as they would in the games, often they lack the same impact when put on the wiki due to different page widths and sometimes style or layout. I agree that the text version should be kept but an option in the summary box could offer a 'view as in ingame' option (wording needs worked on). On a technical side how would it work? Would we host all the books in that format, or just the template which would load a page when asked, or would we be essentially sending them offsite? Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 17:56, 28 July 2016 (UTC)
That is a kinda cool little novelty item, but it took a while to become responsive for me, formatting of text needed a lot of work, etc, though I'd assume it would be polished out before it would be used. It's a cool little gimmicky thing to look at, but I can't really see it as something that could be supplemental to the wiki. -damon  talkcontribs 18:27, 28 July 2016 (UTC)
It really looks cool, but I would like to have our old plain text style as default. You can neiterh Ctrl + F in these books, nor put links there (at least the way it looks to me) -- SarthesArai Talk 18:57, 28 July 2016 (UTC)
There website claims that links are possible. It also says you can do audio versions, which would be nice since we occasionally see requests for audio versions of the lore books. How would this be hosted though? There website talks about them hosting this, and I'm not sure how I feel about sending our users offsite to view our content (assuming we are doing the formatting to make this work). But we should definitely keep our existing version as the "primary" one, primarily to remain as user friendly as possible, especially for people with worse Internets. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 20:07, 28 July 2016 (UTC)
As a strong proponent for the Web 1.0 revival, I also have to agree that plain text should remain the primary format of books. This web app thing is neat and it wouldn't be a bad feature to have, but it's far too flashy to be anything more than a fun gimmick. Plain, static pages are always gonna be optimal for displaying prose. As for supplying audio versions, there's been some discussion about that here, and a bunch of text-to-speech files have recently been made available for use on the wiki. —Legoless (talk) 22:19, 28 July 2016 (UTC)

Legoless got the accounts, and I've added "quickbooks" to the spam filters, so we shouldn't be seeing any more of those. Robin Hood  (talk) 21:35, 29 July 2016 (UTC)

Hotcat

There seems to be a problem with Hotcat, it won't auto-complete category names as I type. If I want it I need to type it out in full, but it will show a tick at that point to confirm the cat exists. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 23:40, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

I dunno if someone did something to fix it, but it wasn't showing up before, I purged the page and now it seems to work fine. Jeancey (talk) 01:37, 20 August 2016 (UTC)
This is the first time I've looked at the wiki in several hours, so unless Dave did something, I'm gonna guess it was some kind of temporary glitch. Robin Hood  (talk) 01:48, 20 August 2016 (UTC)
Purging this page myself fixed it here, but not on any other pages. It seems if I purge a page before trying it it works, but that's hardly a solution. After closing and reopening a page I've purged it stops working again. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 01:58, 20 August 2016 (UTC)
My best guess is that it's probably some kind of weird caching issue, which only Dave can take care of. I'll write him now in case he's still awake, but he probably won't see it until tomorrow. Robin Hood  (talk) 02:38, 20 August 2016 (UTC)

Color

I would like to add color to http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Craftable_Sets but I'm not sure how to go about doing this. Health = Red; Stamina/Weapon Dmg/Weapon Crit = Green; Magicka/Spell Dmg/Spell Crit = Blue.

The simplest method is probably just to use the {{BG}} template. It can be used either on the entire row, like this (edit this section to see what I've done):
Set Name Traits Needed Bonuses Crafting Sites
Ashen Grip 2

2 items: Adds 28-1206 Maximum Health
3 items: Adds 3-129 Weapon and Spell Damage
4 items: Adds 15-657 Critical Chance
5 items: When you deal Martial melee damage, you breathe fire to all enemies in front of you for 774 Flame Damage. This effect can occur once every 4 seconds and scales off the higher of your Weapon or Spell Damage.

or just for specific cells, like this:
Set Name Traits Needed Bonuses Crafting Sites
Ashen Grip 2

2 items: Adds 28-1206 Maximum Health
3 items: Adds 3-129 Weapon and Spell Damage
4 items: Adds 15-657 Critical Chance
5 items: When you deal Martial melee damage, you breathe fire to all enemies in front of you for 774 Flame Damage. This effect can occur once every 4 seconds and scales off the higher of your Weapon or Spell Damage.

I've used HTML's "pink" here because "red" tends to be a little overbearing. A full list of colour names can be found on Wikipedia. Alternatively, you can use specific colour codes, if you're familiar with them, such as {{BG|#FF5050}}, which would produce a lighter red. Robin Hood  (talk) 18:05, 4 September 2016 (UTC)
What do you do with sets which have a mix of attributes, e.g. Oblivion's Foe? — TheRealLurlock (talk) 16:55, 5 September 2016 (UTC)
I'd suggest using a neutral colour like grey or white for those, but if you really wanted to, you could get creative and use gradients, though as you can see in the text, those get stupidly messy if you want to support all CSS styles from slightly older browsers. If you want to just limit it to "modern browser or bust", you only need the first and last background styles. Robin Hood  (talk) 18:44, 5 September 2016 (UTC)
Could just highlight the relevant text rather than colouring the whole box, e.g. "Adds 12-1064 Maximum Health". —Legoless (talk) 21:06, 5 September 2016 (UTC)
I think colouring the text would look better. This is already done on Recipes, so using the same formatting as that would be most consistent. To get Health, Magicka, and Stamina, all you need is {{FC|red|Health}}, {{FC|blue|Magicka}}, and {{FC|green|Stamina}}. That's {{FC|color|text}} for making any text the specified color. --Enodoc (talk) 21:53, 5 September 2016 (UTC)
Works for me, though in this case, I'd suggest only coloring the text for Health, Magicka, and Stamina, and not for any of the other effects. The original suggestion of including weapon damage/crit and spell damage/crit along with stamina and magicka would just get too confusing, and often arbitrary in some of the more unusual cases. I could maybe see an argument for Ultimate as well, but that'd be about it. — TheRealLurlock (talk) 01:55, 6 September 2016 (UTC)
I think the relevance of including damage and crit is because weapon damage/crit is beneficial for Stamina builds (so would also be green) and spell damage/crit is beneficial for Magicka builds (so would also be blue). But I'm indifferent over whether it should actually be done for those or not. (Alternatively, we could use goldenrod for weapon damage/crit, and turquoise for spell damage/crit, to match the in-game potion colours, but that may be less useful for builds). --Enodoc (talk) 08:34, 6 September 2016 (UTC)

Mobile wiki pages appear instead of Standard wiki pages

While running Firefox on my PC or laptop, I sometimes get the what I believe are the Mobile-style wiki pages (plain white background) instead of the original style (same background as this forum). BOTH have the same URL, http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Skyrim (although I get it using other pages as well). I am not sure how to attached files, but I do have screenshots. On my tablet I always get the mobile version, but the url is uesp.net NOT m.uesp.net, which is what I thought it was supposed to be. I would kind of assume this is a webserver configuration issue, but that is just a guess. This has been going on for about a year, maybe longer. Does anyone know of a cure, as I much prefer the original pages (althoguh I will admit the mobile pages do seem to load faster).

I noticed there is a discussion above titled "Redirected to Mobile" that may be related, as it sounds somewhat similar. — Unsigned comment by 96.252.12.6196.252.12.61 (talk) at 03:49 on 23 September 2016 (UTC)

As a close enough topic is there a way to open or convert ESO meshes? I saw an album with some meshes opened in a viewer or something. What format do they have and what program opens them? Appreciate the answer. Phoenix Neko (talk) 09:43, 13 October 2016 (UTC)
Sorry, didn't see your question until today. I'm not sure who converted those meshes or how. We don't have any converter at the moment and I haven't done any work at looking at the 3D mesh format. A quick Google doesn't show any relevant results either. If you happen to find out any information let us know as such a utility would be useful. -- Daveh (talk) 16:07, 19 October 2016 (UTC)

Truncated Achievement Descriptions

I don't know if it's the game itself, the data-logger or the database display, but we have a problem with some of the longer achievement summaries being truncated. In particular, many of the ones in the Speed Challenges category seem to be missing some text. I don't know what the solution to this (other than simply transcribing by hand directly from the game), but I wanted to bring it to people's attention so we can find a way to rectify it. — TheRealLurlock (talk) 22:02, 15 October 2016 (UTC)

Well, I transcribed the missing text from in-game at Online:Veteran Dungeons Achievements#Speed Challenges, but the underlying problem remains - either the plugin isn't getting the whole text from the game or the database isn't displaying it. Either way, we'll have to make sure that if the maintenance of the text on the achievement pages is ever handled by a bot (which was part of my motivation for making all these individual achievement pages/redirects in the first place), that we take these truncated descriptions into account. — TheRealLurlock (talk) 00:13, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
The description field was just set as TINYTEXT which limits it to 256 characters. I changed it to TEXT and re-dumped the achievement data which should be parsed tonight so check again tomorrow and hopefully it will all be fixed. -- Daveh (talk) 01:40, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
Cool. I don't know if there's anything else with text that long which might have problems, but as far as I'm aware (and having looked at all the achievements while creating these pages I'm probably more aware than most) those are the only achievements which go over the 256 char limit. The only other thing I can think of that might have the same problem is maybe quest stages? Also dialogue, but I don't think we're even logging that currently, are we? — TheRealLurlock (talk) 02:21, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
The achievement descriptions should now be fixed. If you notice any other fields that are truncated or are missing data let me know. Right now we're not collecting dialogue text although I'd like to at some point. In theory all the dialog text is already in the game's text data files although there is no (known) way to link it to a specific quest. -- Daveh (talk) 13:27, 18 October 2016 (UTC)

Purge Button gone?

At some point today, the "Purge" button that used to be at the top of the page disappeared. I checked my preferences, and the setting is still on. Is anyone else noticing this? I kind of use that button a lot, so it's pretty annoying to lose it. — TheRealLurlock (talk) 17:53, 20 October 2016 (UTC)

I don't remember an actual purge button on pages but there is a "Purge Cache" option in the "Page" drop-down tab menu at the top of the page (unless that is the one that is missing). I haven't made any site changes so I'm not sure why it would disappear. -- Daveh (talk) 17:57, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
I can still see the Purge gadget if I add it. Are other Javscript gadgets working okay? If not, check the developer tools in your browser, and see if they're showing any Javascript errors. Robin Hood  (talk) 18:50, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
My purge tab vanished along with the clock in the upper right. They were there on a tab opened yesterday but refresh made them disappear. Disabling and reenabling did not bring either one back. Although, someone in IRC mentioned a new version of JavaScript was released yesterday, maybe it broke a thing. Echo (talk) 18:54, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm getting it now too. I thought it was my changes, but I reverted everything and I'm still getting it. The Javascript Console gives me:
Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'nodeName' of undefined in the line
var noData=elem.nodeName&&jQuery.noData[elem.nodeName.toLowerCase()];. Robin Hood  (talk) 19:12, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
Dave: tracing that line down, it's part of jQuery itself, so is probably not the actual source of the error. The actual error is likely somewhere else in our Javascript, but I can't find anything. Robin Hood  (talk) 19:41, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
I also just lost it after a hard refresh. —Legoless (talk) 22:05, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
My other javascript stuff isn't working either, like my popups. Jeancey (talk) 00:29, 21 October 2016 (UTC)

() This was due to some Javascript changes I did earlier. That specific error wasn't occurring at the time and I'm guessing there is a load order issue going on which makes it appear intermittently. I modified the code to avoid the issue so if you do a full page reload it "should" fix it. Let me know either way. -- Daveh (talk) 01:14, 21 October 2016 (UTC)

UESP Wiki: Morrowind: Spells by School: Spell IDs

For the Morrowind Spells pages, although the Spell IDs are still there for the lists of Cheap and Expensive Spells, the lists of spells by school no longer show the Spell IDs, consequently they are not accessible through the console. I just took a look at random edits for a couple of the spells pages, but I couldn't find any point where there were any spell IDs to begin with, so there's nothing to revert to. Robin Hood  (talk) 16:43, 22 October 2016 (UTC)

Possible captcha issue?

A user messaged the Facebook page with the following: "I think you might have a broken captcha module, because I've been trying to sign-up for the last 2 days and I always get the "Incorrect or missing Captcha" error, no matter how hard I try or how many times I check if I followed the instructions correctly." Has anyone heard of any issues like this? ~ Alarra (talk) 23:02, 26 October 2016 (UTC)

Sometimes it happens. If you are satisfied about the persons credentials it is possible to create an account for them and pass on the details, they can then change the password once inside. If you are unsure about doing this then they can go to the chatroom and someone there can help. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 00:05, 27 October 2016 (UTC)

Vandalism in Progress

Over the past week or so, a number of IP addresses have been replacing pages with Cyrillic gibberish. I am thus requesting a range block, of all IP addresses beginning with 5.228 as I see no other way of putting an end to this. - KINMUNETALK﴿ 22:34, 2 November 2016 (UTC)

Done. I narrowed the range a bit because there was a legitimate post earlier this year from the same range, as well as a handful last year. Can someone double-check my range, though...I'm not thinking terribly clearly at the moment. The intent was to block 5.228.0-15.*. Robin Hood  (talk) 00:54, 3 November 2016 (UTC)
The range looks right to me. I always use this calculator when doing range blocks. --Enodoc (talk) 09:24, 3 November 2016 (UTC)
I've seen a couple of range calculator tools, but didn't realize that WMF had one specifically geared towards blocking. Looks a lot simpler than the other ones I've seen. Thanks! (Edit: just went to add it to my toolbox only to find it was already there! lol) Robin Hood  (talk) 13:58, 3 November 2016 (UTC)
Don't forget our most powerful tool, the abuse filter. I don't see much similarity, but simply adding a few common characters could eliminate a fair bit of the spam/nonsense. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 20:31, 15 November 2016 (UTC)
Can someone please reinstate this block, the amount of spam from this range is unacceptable. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 19:24, 18 November 2016 (UTC)
Re-blocked for one month. Robin Hood  (talk) 19:40, 18 November 2016 (UTC)

() Some of the IPs fall outside the block range. According to the calculator 5.228.7.240 would require /21 while 5.228.3.118 would require /22. Both of these IPs have spammed on OB:Items. There was one IP I checked the other day that required a /24 but I can't recall where I saw that IP. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 19:08, 19 November 2016 (UTC)

The /20 should cover all of those. The lower the number, the wider the range. Robin Hood  (talk) 20:51, 19 November 2016 (UTC)
I didn't know how it worked, that explains what I thought was odd calculations. I was concerned because 5.228.3.118 spammed today after the block yesterday, but on further investigation the cause is that the block is on the incorrect IP, 5.28.0.0/20. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 21:11, 19 November 2016 (UTC)
Oops! I'll fix that. Thanks! Robin Hood  (talk) 18:30, 20 November 2016 (UTC)
Looks like it won't stop. Seems as if it'll need a permanent block. That, or would it be possible to configure the abuse filters to prevent Cyrillic? - KINMUNETALK﴿ 10:28, 26 December 2016 (UTC)
Okay, they're blocked for a year. We don't do permanent range blocks in case there are later legitimate users coming from the same range. While it would be possible to prevent Cyrillic, it's not my first choice, just on the (admittedly remote) chance that someone wants to post something like "that glyph that looks like a Cyrillic ю". Blocking specific words would be a better choice, and I'll look into doing that if they return after a year or evade the block by switching to a completely different IP range. Robin Hood  (talk) 16:15, 26 December 2016 (UTC)

() It's spreading to other IP addresses. The content is almost identical to the old 5.228 edits. - KINMUNETALK﴿ 23:11, 29 January 2017 (UTC)

I was hoping to avoid blocking the entire Cyrillic alphabet, but it appears we have no choice. I modified one of the spam filters to include Cyrillic, so at least it'll only affect new users. Those who are autoconfirmed should still be able to post in Russian (e.g., User talk:ZKoshak). Robin Hood  (talk) 00:02, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

Error saving edits in mobile version

After typing it up, including the colons, and the tildes for my sig I tried to save the edit, but kept gettings an error, edit unable to save. The first time I had forgotten to include the colons and tildes, but even after fixing my own formatting problems it still wouldn't go through. I checked the help pages with no luck and finally decided to try the desktop site. Table Entry Templates broken?

Has there been a wiki update or change in the CSS recently? Because many of the instances of Template:Online Achievement Entry now appear to be broken, in that the table row does not expand to fit the icon. Look at Online:Character Achievements for example. Most of them seem to be okay, but the ones from "Daedra Slayer" down to "Undead Slayer" are too narrow, as is "This One's On Me" lower down. Similar problems can be seen on all of the Achievement pages. I'm using Chrome, but tested it in Edge as well, and it had the same problem. — TheRealLurlock (talk) 16:45, 17 November 2016 (UTC)

I also noticed it a couple days ago while adding images to some location pages.. for example East-Rock Landing. Tib (talk) 17:48, 17 November 2016 (UTC)
I think it may be the iconback interfering somehow. A side-effect present on the broken icons is that they can't be clicked to go to the icons file page, which is the same on the individual achievement page. When I remove the iconback and preview it, it allows it to be clicked. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 18:54, 17 November 2016 (UTC)
I made changes to {{Image Sandwich}} (which is nested in Online Achievement Entry) a couple of days ago to fix the problem where the border icon could appear on a separate line from the content icon. I just reverted them and that fixed this problem, at the expense of the original problem returning. I'll look into it more later. Robin Hood  (talk) 19:26, 17 November 2016 (UTC)
Would it help to have 2 versions of this template? 1 for use in-line and one for use in a table. Or it could be a parameter option so it would be just one template. Trick would be finding a way of doing it that doesn't require every page using the template to add the parameter or change to a different template, but worst-case if we have to do that is we just let a bot do it. — TheRealLurlock (talk) 21:01, 17 November 2016 (UTC)
In a belated follow-up, I've modified the {{Image Sandwich}} template and I think it addresses all the issues. Please let me know if you see any issues with image overlays anywhere, though. Also please mention which browser and platform you're using, in case it makes a difference. Robin Hood  (talk) 22:44, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Christmas Gifts!

TamrielMap Christmas2016.jpg

I wanted to do some Christmas gifts for the site's fans this year and with the short time available I'm going to print a bunch of Tamriel map posters and send them to folks (method to be decided). I found a great high resolution map from DwarfChieftain on DeviantArt and he's given us permission to make posters with it.

I'd like a little feedback on the idea and map in particular although keep in mind I don't have much time if the maps are to be sent before Christmas.

  • Errors -- I don't want to fix every minor mistakes but if you see anything obvious let me know. Also keep in mind the source of the map is Arena.
  1. West Gash is on the East side of Vvardenfell
  2. Eastmarsh should be fixed to Eastmarch
  3. Remove Firewarth label next top Ald'ruhn.
  • Color -- I bumped up the color a bit from the original which seems to look good. I could also do a more "old-fashioned" style map by removing most of the color and making everything brown/beige. I did a quick test and it didn't look very good as the water is too dark but suggestions are welcome.
  • Map Label -- I added quick map label with title and author in the lower right which I can easily tweak if needed.

The "plan" is to get a bunch (around 100-250 depending on the price) 24x18" posters made up and I'll mail them out to people. I'd like to get the map out for printing this week if possible so I can start mailing in the first/second week of December. I'll put a post up on the CP/forums for the actual give-away once I finalize the map. -- Daveh (talk) 16:24, 29 November 2016 (UTC)

I am not sure what errors you wish us to look for, as those listed below are errors according to Morrowind and ESO, but I believe I have found these:
  • Errors
  1. Alten Corimont is direct south of Stormhold, but should be east of Stormhold, possibly near enough to the ocean to correspond being a port.
  2. Sotha Sil, by Narsis, is missing the l. (Unsure of the place of it too. Should it not be under Mournhold?)
  3. Ald Sotha should be North of Vivec, not by the coast South of Mournhold.
Is that what you meant? —MortenOSlash (talk) 17:25, 29 November 2016 (UTC)
Yup, anything like this is good, although I may not fix everything depending on how difficult it is to do since I don't have the original files so I'm just pushing pixels. -- Daveh (talk) 17:42, 29 November 2016 (UTC)
Alten Corimont's location seems fine. It actually isn't coastal, it's meant to be inland. The Arena places are a little dated compared to ESO but it should be serviceable. —Legoless (talk) 17:54, 29 November 2016 (UTC)
I don't know how many of these differences are supported by lore, but just a few I noticed off-hand:
  • Shornhelm is spelled as "Sharnhelm"
  • Vulkwasten is spelled "Valkwasten"
  • Davon's Watch is spelled "Dervon's Watch"
  • Fahrun Stronghold is spelled "Farrun"
  • Evermore is spelled "Evermor"
  • Elden Root is considerably further west than it appears in ESO
  • Silsailen has moved from the east to the west coast of Auridon
  • Narsis is far south of where it appears in ESO instead of roughly the same latitude as Mournhold
  • Amol is northwest of Windhelm instead of southwest (assuming Amol is the same as Fort Amol
  • Oldgate has moved from south of Shornhelm to northeast of it
  • Orsinium is much further west than its location in ESO, though this could be the location of Old Orsinium
TheRealLurlock (talk) 21:32, 29 November 2016 (UTC)
Alabaster, an Elsweyr city, is in Cyrodiil, next to Leyawiin. --Rezalon (talk) 22:16, 29 November 2016 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Just one item that I noticed and want to point out from your list, TRL: Narsis, according to lore maps, is roughly in the same place this map Dave posted indicates. I didn't check any of the other listed locations, but that's one that I knew and recognised immediately. Are we going based off how the individual games show things, or are we going based off lore information on how accurate this map is? -damon  talkcontribs 22:20, 29 November 2016 (UTC)
Something I noticed is that the Velothi Mountains and Dunmeth Pass are in completely the wrong place. The mountains are supposed to be between Skyrim and Morrowind, with the pass going from Windhelm to Blacklight. --Enodoc (talk) 23:19, 29 November 2016 (UTC)
I was bored, so I figured I'd be the guy to cross-check a handful of these map errors people are reporting with what we have on the wiki, since I've got a couple of ready-to-show things. As the gaffer said, this map is based on Arena's maps for the bulk of the locations, so locations shown on the map are likely to vary from the locations shown in later games or maps, and I'm basing my comments off links to Arena maps.
  • Amol is marked on the Arena map and on the wiki as being south of Winterhold and west of Windhelm, and is in the correct location according to that game's map.
  • Elden Root looks to be just slightly off to the west a bit, but not by much from the original source, considering this was fan made. I wouldn't consider its depiction here to be "wrong" when you compare it to the original Arena map, though.
  • Old Gate is stated in Arena as being between Shornhelm and Northpoint, and it is.
  • I pointed out Narsis above.
That was four locations cited as wrong in the above comments that are actually fine when you look at the maps of the game used for the source. Remember lads, the bulk of the map's locations are based off of ARENA's dated maps, so cross-check against Arena, not the newer games, before pointing out that something is wrong or not. I agree with the typos pointed out, though, so if Dave is able to fix those without affecting the map quality (since he doesn't have the files and is editing an already flattened and finished image as he said), then they ought to be fixed. -damon  talkcontribs 04:29, 30 November 2016 (UTC)

() Thanks for the corrections. I'm going to fix all the spelling errors but I'm not going to worry about the location mismatches. Most of them seem to be due to using Arena as the map source anyways. -- Daveh (talk) 13:50, 30 November 2016 (UTC)

I've updated the map with all the corrections so far other than a couple of the location ones. I'm in the process of getting it printed out in the next few days so if there are any more corrections let me know ASAP. Thanks! -- Daveh (talk) 14:56, 1 December 2016 (UTC)
Not sure if my input isn't too late, but since I'm a self-appointed TES geographer, I'd like to provide it anyway.
As Damon said before, this map is based on the Arena map, so it doesn't make much sense to compare it with anything else. I don't want to nitpick, so I'll just point a few most noticeable things.
  • A good few names are misspelled, (eg. Western Coridale instead of Wasten Coridale). Might be worth checking with Arena:Places.
  • One thing that I immediately noticed is that mainland Morrowind is based on Tamriel Rebuilt, and so some locations marked there are specific to this mod (for example Bosmora).
  • Most locations seem to be correctly placed in relation to the Arena map. As Enodoc said, the Velothi Mountains and the Dunmeth Pass are completely misplaced, though.
  • Farrun was actually the correct spelling, at least if we're in the Third Era.
--Vordur Steel-Hammer (TINV1K) 18:04, 1 December 2016 (UTC)
What bugs me most is the fact that nearly every name in continental Morrowind was taken from Tamriel Rebuilt, such as Othrensis, Bosmora, etc. Phoenix Neko (talk) 16:28, 2 December 2016 (UTC)
In fact there's only a few TR-specific names (I think Bosmora, Balfalls, and Old Ebonheart). Most of the rest comes either from Arena or the Morrowind concept map. Othrensis itself is also from there and it even appears in ESO. --Vordur Steel-Hammer (TINV1K) 17:11, 2 December 2016 (UTC)
Yeah, my fault. Balfalls is Stonefalls though and appears in ESO too.Phoenix Neko (talk) 18:40, 2 December 2016 (UTC)

Don't know if you guys are still taking corrections on this, but shouldn't "Dungar Wall" be "Dunpar Wall"? Arthmoor (talk) 05:29, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

I just caught one as well: "Vulkhel Guard" is misspelled as "Vukhel Guard". ~ Alarra (talk) 00:29, 10 December 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, although I just picked up the posters today so the last couple of corrections didn't make it. Consider it "artistic license".... -- Daveh (talk) 02:15, 10 December 2016 (UTC)

As you can see above, we've had issues with the mobile version of the wiki appearing randomly. This is just a reminder, this issue is still ongoing, and a number of users have contacted me to report it. The odd thing is, I had this issue for a little while myself, over the last few months, I haven't been able to recreate it. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 23:55, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

Christmas Map Poster Giveaway Coordination

The whole map giveaway is getting complicated so I'm starting this topic as a coordination point. I picked up the 250 posters today and they look great (picture here soon...). Right now the distribution looks roughly like:

  • ESO PC-NA = 43 (includes 20 for the Council of Nirn)
  • ESO PC-EU = 10
  • ESO Xbox = 10
  • ESO PS4 = 10
  • Zenimax and Bethesda = 6
  • Forum = 20
  • Social Media = 30
  • Wiki Editor Random Draw = 50
  • Anyone Random Draw = 25 (will advertise on the wiki, Reddit forums, and ES/ESO forums)

That brings us to 224 of the 250 with some leeway if anyone needs extra. I can always adjust the two random draws down a bit if needed. If there are other groups that I've omitted let me know.

Most of the giveaways within these groups includes a guaranteed map for all admin/officer positions and then some sort of random draw for everyone else. Most groups are handling this by the appropriate group leader within the group. The exception currently are the two last random drawings:

Admins/officers and random draw winners can submit their mailing address at https://goo.gl/forms/eMw24Xxw7lyX8cUo2. Alternatively group leaders can simply e-mail me a list of winners along with addresses if they collect it separately (which has already started).

I was hoping to get things mailed out before Christmas but that is looking far to optimistically now except for some of the fixed winners. Officers/admins make sure to give me your address sooner and I'll mail them out as I receive them. To keep things affordable I'm folding the map in quarters and mailing it in a large envelope, although I may be persuaded to mail a few in rolls if people ask nicely. I think for the two large random draws I'll let them run until the end of December and choose the winners on January 1st and start mailing them in the new year. Group leaders can do their random draws anytime, even months into the new year if you'd like (as some have suggested).

I'd like to get announcement out for the the two large random draws next week and I know social media has started their thing already, so any comments and feedback is better said sooner than later. -- Daveh (talk) 02:37, 10 December 2016 (UTC)

the only comment I have atm is that some of the overlap between the groups, like people who are both admins on the wiki and officers in one of the guilds might cause more maps to be available than the list currently indicates. I'll have more comments later (I'm on my lunch break atm). Jeancey (talk) 20:25, 10 December 2016 (UTC)
Yah, I was thinking I'll just sort that out if anyone happens to win or be eligible for more than one. -- Daveh (talk) 21:48, 10 December 2016 (UTC)
I should have the addresses of the 5 EU winners by next Sunday/Monday. —Legoless (talk) 18:54, 11 December 2016 (UTC)

() I've posted a news article for the overall event and the 2 random draws I'm running. I mailed out a batch of 20 or so maps this week to people who have already submitted addresses. Make sure you submit your mailing address if you qualify for a guarunteed map (wiki admin, forum moderator, or ESO guild officer). Also a note that people are free to suggest recipients that you think would really enjoy the map. We've already had a bunch of good ones suggested by a few people which include Zenimax/Bethesda people and a few other ES related sites/people. -- Daveh (talk) 17:03, 16 December 2016 (UTC)

Not surprisingly, since I only live a few hours drive away from Dave, I got my map today. Thank you, Dave! Robin Hood  (talk) 02:37, 21 December 2016 (UTC)
Could you share a picture of how it came out through the mail? I could use one for social media. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 03:02, 21 December 2016 (UTC)
I've tasked my partner with that, since I don't have a functional camera of my own, so I should have something later today. Do you want me to upload it here or send it to you via e-mail? Robin Hood  (talk) 15:52, 21 December 2016 (UTC)

Okay, here you go! The sheen of the map unfortunately picked up a lot of flash glare, but that should give you an idea how it came out, anyway. Despite appearances, that was actually lying almost perfectly flat. Robin Hood  (talk) 01:03, 22 December 2016 (UTC)

() I closed the 2 random draw submissions early yesterday, choose the winners today (45 from the wiki and 25 from everyone) and sent out an e-mail to the winners. Another 60 or so maps are being sent out tomorrow from people who submitted addresses over the holidays and from the random draw winners that have already submitted their address. -- Daveh (talk) 16:28, 2 January 2017 (UTC)

I got mine just after Christmas and I love it! I also really liked the sticker you included with the two Orcs :). Thanks!!! Jeancey (talk) 19:45, 2 January 2017 (UTC)

Yes, all winners should have received an e-mail from me (dave@uesp.net) on Jan 2nd. -- Daveh (talk) 00:49, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

One of our toplinks has not been working for quite a while. Our webchat is currently non-functioning. I don't know if we no longer support webchat, but I would like to see it fixed, as I've received a few reports about it. Is there any obvious fix? Per his continued excellent editing, I do not see any more need for editing restrictions to be placed on Dragon Guard. As of now, I do not see any need to continue to acknowledge any existing restriction we've placed on his ability to edit, primarily 0RR. Hey Dave, all of the new Furniture items seem to have a bracketed "subtype" (for want of another word). Is there some way to get this info? For example, the Firelog, Charred is a "(Hearth)" item. Other "subtypes" I've seen are Conservatory, Courtyard, Dining, Shrine, Suite, and Workshop, so you have a bit more idea of what you're looking for. Thanks! --Enodoc (talk) 11:18, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
I did a bunch of work today on the furniture items and recipe data:
  • I've included the category and sub-category for Furnishings. Right now the category text is stored in the setBonusDesc4/5 fields and numeric values in setBonusDesc2/3. Note that the sub-category currently isn't displayed in-game.
  • I've updated the data to include a variable number of tradeskill requirements for recipes.
  • Ingredient quantities for recipes are also now logged and displayed.
The type/subtype fields in the upperleft for recipe tooltips isn't identical to the in-game version but contains the same information. I'll tweak it eventually along with anything else that needs work. -- Daveh (talk) 19:34, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
Piercing Javelin is missing from Aedric Spear, it only has 4 abilities. The Mages Guild and Fighters Guild completely miss their activated abilities. -- SarthesArai Talk 16:38, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
It looks like the templates don't have the active skills maxed for the guild lines which messes up the skills parser. I'm tweaking a few things in order to get the data needed. -- Daveh (talk) 20:11, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
Should be fixed now, at least those skill lines are complete unless I broke something else in the process. -- Daveh (talk) 20:30, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

() Hey Dave, could we have an upload of the crowncrates, store, treeicons, and tutorial art directories from the depot\esoui\art path, please? Currently the downtime is scheduled for tonight, 1 Feb 2017, sometime between 12-6am EST. I've asked for a more specific time but until I hear back from the ISP that is what I know. -- Daveh (talk) 22:40, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
Current scheduled downtime is at midnight (12am) on 1 Feb 2017. -- Daveh (talk) 02:53, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

Removing Old ESO Mined Item Data

I'm in the process of moving all ESO log/item databases from the content3 server to the main db1/db2 servers. In order to save disk space I'm not going to include all the old minedItem tables (some 200GB) that go back to update 5. I am keeping the significantly smaller mined item summary tables for each update so the basic information for old items is still available. The only thing I can think of that might break with this change are item links that refer to specific versions. If you know of any of these is use, or can find/think of other things that may break let me know. I have backups of all the tables so in the worst case we can restore them or even parse them from the original logs.

I'm in the process of moving databases today and will let you know when the actual change takes place. -- Daveh (talk) 15:35, 10 March 2017 (UTC)

The only items I can think of that will be directly affected are the ones that we requested this archive for in the first place - the pre-Update 6 provisioning items. If it's possible to keep specific subsets of the items (so in this case, item types 4, 12, and 10 from Update 5), but still delete the majority, that might be good. Someone else might be able to note if there are any other specific subsets that would be useful. --Enodoc (talk) 19:11, 10 March 2017 (UTC)
So currently the item links on that page are referencing the current/latest item data so some of them are pointing to the updated item. I've added a version field to the template/item link code but I'll have to do some server-side coding in order for it to pull data from the summary table instead of the minedItem table if the latter is deleted (as is now the case for all old mined item tables). -- Daveh (talk) 18:03, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
I've updated the item link code to work with old version item data and to use the minedItemSummary table instead of the now deleted minedItem table. To update the links just add a version parameter in the template code like version=5 (or whatever version the item is from). This seems to work fine for simple items and a few other test items but if you find an item/link type that doesn't display correctly let me know. -- Daveh (talk) 21:00, 14 March 2017 (UTC)

Color Dragonborn Map

Someone mentioned in Discord last week that the [DB map] could use with a colored version so I dusted off my old Skyrim map mining scripts this week. Fortunately it only took a little bit of work to get it running for the DB worldspace and I have a first run of color map tiles working at http://content3.uesp.net/maps/dbmap/dbmap.html.

There's a few things that need work:

  • Water Bleeding -- Have to tweak the water parsing effect so that it doesn't bleed through as much land.
  • Blurred Textures -- At max zoom level the "blur" effect used is far too much. Not sure if I even used this effect on the Skyrim map at all.
  • Map Artifacts -- I removed most of the map artifacts (Dragons, sounds markers, NPC markers, etc...) but a few more remain. If you spot any let me know the cell coordinates for easier removal.
  • Tile Stitching -- There is noticeable tile stitching at the max zoom level for some reason.

If there are more tweaks or fixes desired just let me know. -- Daveh (talk) 17:35, 14 March 2017 (UTC)

I uploaded another set of map tiles with less "blur" and a little better water detection. I'll have to do another export from the CK to fix the water detection completely. This also fixed the tile stitching. Also noticed a section in the NorthWest corner of the map that is lacking objects that would need to be re-exported as well. -- Daveh (talk) 21:39, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
Another map tile update. The previous method of creating the transluscent water didn't work for the DB map tiles so I had to try another method. It changes the color of the water slightly but seems to work well enough. There's a few tiles that need fixing in the current version but unless there's other comments I'm probably going to be using this version. -- Daveh (talk) 23:42, 15 March 2017 (UTC)
The new map with color looks great, Daveh! I mentioned it on Discord about a week ago, so maybe that was me? —Dillonn241 (talk) 01:12, 16 March 2017 (UTC)
The current version looks much better. So much so that it made me want to play Dragonborn again! --Enodoc (talk) 13:14, 16 March 2017 (UTC)
I've now updated the main DB maps at http://dbmap.uesp.net with the new tiles. -- Daveh (talk) 15:00, 16 March 2017 (UTC)

ESO Log Data Changes

A couple of recent/in-progress changes to http://esolog.uesp.net to bring up and discuss...

I've changed/improved the quest logging in uespLog and have moved the previously logged data to oldQuests, and oldQuestStages. These tables still work with each other but links to the questItem table is broken.

  • Quest Data includes the following tables:
  • quest = Main quest data
  • questSteps = Steps for the quest
  • questConditions = Conditions for all quest steps
  • questRewards = Rewards for each quest
  • questItems = Same as before, will need data to be parsed in order to be linked to the quests
  • The hierarchy of a quest is:
  • Quest Name -- As shown in-game
  • Quest Stage -- The game does not show stage data or which stage you are on but only signals that a stage has changed.
  • Quest Step -- Step data for the current quest stage is available from the game API.
  • Quest Condition -- Condition data for all steps in the current quest stage is available from the game API.
  • For all data from a particular quest to be logged someone has to run through the entire quest (at least up to the complete stage). The game API only gives data for the current stage so until you actually do the quest you don't know how many stages there are and the step/condition data for each stage. Similarly, the quest item data is only available for the current stage and reward data is only available once the quest is completed.
  • For some quests, for example the Writs, there will be many different quest steps and conditions depending on the player doing them. This is the purpose of the uniqueId field which can be used to group together steps/conditions that one player may have experienced. I'm unsure exactly how this will work in practice and will have to see how it does once more people start logging the new quest data.
  • Does anyone know of any duplicate quest names in ESO? Right now I'm identifying a quest solely from its given name however I can include other data such as the quest origin zone if needed if there are any duplicate names.

Some people on Discord were asking about quest and dialog data. Current uespLog doesn't log dialog data related to quests mainly because for most dialog there is no way to relate a line of dialog or a reply to a specific quest. All the NPC dialog and journal texts are found in the raw data but the difficulty comes in associating which texts are related to which NPC and quest. I'm in the process of deciphering this data but it is complex and may take a while to get any results.

Another new piece of logged data is the NPC Loot table which attempts to associate looted items with a specific NPC in order to determine drop rates.

  • Drop rate data is collected and stored by zone and then summarized as needed. There are some items that drop specific to a certain zone (ex: Nirncrux).
  • Use the "View NPC Loots" link on the right in the npcLoot and npc tables to view drop rate information for that NPC.
  • The the "View Item Loots" link on the right in the npcLoot table to view all NPCs that drop that item.
  • "NPCs" has been expanded to include things like writ containers, ore nodes, etc... which makes it much simpler to keep track of all this data in one place. Things in the NPC table that aren't NPCs will have -1 for their other fields.

Both the new quest and npc loot data are works in progress so feedback, bug reports, and other related feature suggestions would be good to get in now if you have them. -- Daveh (talk) 21:32, 13 April 2017 (UTC)

Quick Change Note: The "zone" field for quests has been updated to use the zone supplied by the quest data itself rather than the zone the player is currently in. This will hopefully make it more consistent and correct in terms of the starting zone. Zones/location for steps and conditions still uses the current player's location as reported by the game (there is no other option). -- Daveh (talk) 23:39, 13 April 2017 (UTC)
A few extra parameters for the NPC loot page:
  • Add the prices=... parameter to include prices for items from our logged sales data. Valid values are: NA, EU, PTS, Other
  • Add the extra=... parameter to include extra summary data. Valid values are: writ, hireling
  • Add the output=csv parameter to output the data in CSV format. Valid values are: csv, html
All parameters can be combined as desired. -- Daveh (talk) 18:29, 15 April 2017 (UTC)

Delete or keep this redir?

I accidentally created a Morrowind:Corprus Creature (singular) redirect (and have since created the Style Guide-correct Morrowind:Corprus Creatures plural version). I prefer to keep singular versions because a) readers do not know the UESP Style Guide, and the plural/singular choice at this site is arbitrary and often confusing, because it varies by subject, and isn't even consistently applied within one (at least not in the articles on the older games); b) players have no idea whether there are multiple forms of something (plural) until well into the game but are most likely to use this site as newbies; and c) redirects are cheap. I don't think it qualifies for speedy deletion, since such redirects are actually useful for readers, so it fails a key SD criterion. I'm self-reporting the creation of the redir anyway, since others have argued with me before about singular redirects, on a "readers can just use the search feature if they can't find something" basis. If it's mandatory to delete such a thing on sight, have at it. I would prefer it be kept and more singular redirs to plural pages, and vice versa, be created. It's a matter of the tail not wagging the dog: the site is for reader utility, not for maintenance simplicity for its own sake. — Darklocq  ¢ 05:31, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

My first question is where you found that recommendation—I couldn't find it anywhere I would've expected. The closest I found was our Deletion Policy, which actually alludes to the opposite stance: keeping singular and plural redirects if (and I would say only if) they help in preventing redundant articles from being created. But going with the assumption that we do, in fact, have that rule written down somewhere, how do singular redirects help if the plural redirect is available (or vice versa)? A search will find either, and an attempted link to a non-existent page will likely prompt the person to find the correct link (whether that's the plural redirect or a direct link) or prompt someone else to fix it when they see a red link on the page or find it on the Wanted Pages page. Breaks with our Style Guide aren't a good reason to create more breaks with our Style Guide. If anything, those should be fixed, unless there's good reason to keep them as they are, such as in-game naming or the odd case where a plural and singular name vary enough to cause a search to fail. Lastly, while I agree that redirects are cheap, an excess of redundant redirects can clutter the search results with useless results, and complicate moving/merging/splitting articles, so unless there's good reason, I would say we should only keep one or the other. This stems more from some advice I tried to give on Darkloq's talk page than anything official as there is a lack of direction and substance on redirects anywhere. To repeat and quote some of that as nowhere goes into to detail yet on when to make redirects only how, and in no particular order, I will list the more general guidelines that we appear to favour when it comes to making redirects (these are my interpretations so feel free to ignore or refute them)
  1. Less is more: there is a massive preference for keeping redirects to a minimum to avoid clutter and have a person find what they need rather than what they think they want, which is opposite wikipedia's style which is generally "more is better".
  2. All items and places: all items, places, people, etc, get a page, in the exact name under which it appears in the game (not the data). If something appears under multiple names then redirects are needed for those too.
  3. But not everything: not every miniscule thing in the game that you can see a name for deserves or gets a page. This includes activators and menu selections. There is a 'help' guide in the game for the base menu things and if you don't know what 'wait' means please stop playing.
  4. No cross-namespace redirects: the only exceptions that are not disputable are DLC namespaces with technical redirects back to the main namespace (eg DB:Nord to SR:Nord). This follows our style of "if it's not there it's not in the game". The About template is usually sufficient in cases of same names in DLC, avoiding the need to make disambigs.
  5. No redirects to benefit those who type an url: I often type urls myself and I don't see how anyone who does can complain a page doesn't exist if it doesn't link. Given that we replicate everything exactly as it is in the game
  6. No variation in caps: there is no need to make redirects for various caps in titles, the search ignores them, and our pages are always all-caps.
  7. No redirects for less than the full name: this is pointless, as the search will give the full title.
  8. Alternate titles (factions, npcs, etc): if it's in the game then yes (dialogue, books), if not then it needs to be done on merit and not 'just because', however, in lore 'just because' is a good enough reason.
There are of course other redirects that are not "created" such as merges and moves, but they also have to justify their existence. I am also yet to find a desired redirect that does not fit into one of our eight categories for them at Category:Redirects, so that can also be used as a guide to see if it is needed.
On plurals, there is no direction at all. My summation to Darkloq was "a definable thing in the game (a Breton, a Blacksmith) usually is singular, while plurals are used on the groupings (races, merchants)". This was very much guesswork and is in no way 100% accurate, as I struggled to find a line that our pages followed. It wasn't so much advice as a summation of what was happening, as my concern in that post was multiple similar redirects. I have no idea how to accurately describe the situation. Our creature pages generally go "Creatures-Animals-Bear" with the opening word being "Bears". This saves creating additional pages and cave bear and snow bear get redirected. But under Skyrim Merchants and Trainers we have Blacksmith, Trainers, Followers, Fence (which redirects to a fences section, and there is a Fences page for OB and ON). Under NPCs we go singular, Bandit, Vampire, and all the Races are singular too. Finally under Places we go plural with help from the template, Ships, Towns, Ruins, Caves. If anything is done I would favour going plural for all these various pages. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 14:00, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
I'd noticed the lack of clear direction on creating redirects when I went looking last night. Perhaps we should take Silencer's various observations and make them part of our official style? Robin Hood  (talk) 19:44, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. --Enodoc (talk) 08:59, 27 April 2017 (UTC)

Disappearing Comments

Hello, I don't exactly have an account here (yet) but I seem to have found an issue with talk pages. Whenever I add a comment to a talk page it won't appear. It's as if I didn't add anything, however examining the source shows it's there. Speaking of which, I hope this very comment isn't affected. --70.170.67.244 16:48, 28 April 2017 (UTC)

Do you have examples of where you have added comments that have disappeared?
Have you made sure it is not the cache memory of you web browser that reloads upon opening an edited page? —MortenOSlash (talk) 17:03, 28 April 2017 (UTC)
Both of the Anon's recent talk page entries appeared fine. I know because I looked at both soon after they were posted but was unable to answer the questions. So it was a simple caching situation, which if you really need to 'fix' can be done with a null edit (edit and save the page without doing anything), which won't appear as an edit but will force the cache to update. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 18:11, 28 April 2017 (UTC)
In order to cut down on traffic, caching works a bit differently for anonymous users than it does for logged-in users. So, in addition to the above solutions, just creating an account will also solve your problem. Robin Hood  (talk) 18:22, 28 April 2017 (UTC)
fascinating this comment was affected too, but you don't notice? maybe it only affects guest users and also can only be seen by them. I'll just create an account then. --70.170.67.244 18:28, 28 April 2017 (UTC)
Yeah, logged-in users are completely unaffected and see all the comments normally...as you're about to find out. :) Robin Hood  (talk) 18:30, 28 April 2017 (UTC)
I'm back with my account now. I hope I can become a meaningful and helpful member of this community. --3371-Alpha (talk) 18:34, 28 April 2017 (UTC)

Request: User Renaming

Hey, I'd like to have my account renamed from "KINMUNE" to "Fullerton" please. This is in part to use the same username across websites, and in part because the sarcastic intent of "Kinetically-Interlinked [etc]" is lost when it's shortened. —KINMUNETALK﴿ 01:31, 11 May 2017 (UTC)

Done. I also updated the user and user_talk redirects from "Kinetically-Interlinked Nirnian Multi-User NthGen Exoform", but I didn't check if any of your sandboxes have double-redirects pointing to them. —Legoless (talk) 22:20, 11 May 2017 (UTC)

Rename me, please?

Hey guys, any chance I could get my name changed so I match all across the internet? "Lady Nerevar" would be great.
