English Spellings[edit]

Yeah, I noticed that on the Morrowind:Farvyn Oreyn page, you used the English spelling of 'armour' instead of the American/Canadian spelling, 'armor'. We are standardized to the Canadian spelling, as the site is based in Canada so it is easier to have continuity on the site. I just thought I'd let you know. --Ratwar 01:29, 4 February 2008 (EST)

I already know about the spelling preferences, but when typing I can't help using the British ones. It's not that I choose to, just that it is what I'm used to. Sorry. --HMSVictory 11:45, 6 February 2008 (EST)

Userboxen[edit]

Can I use your userboxen, or at least your Leeroy Jenkins picture? Michaeldsuarez 19:35, 12 February 2008 (EST)

I know this is irrelevant, but are you German? I study German and I know than plurals often have the suffeix "-en." In English, they're Userboxes. Sorry, I just had to clear that up. Anyway, about my userboxes. Are you going to use them on this Wiki and, if so, which ones do you want? --HMSVictory 11:43, 13 February 2008 (EST)
No, I'm American; not German. Yes, I'm planning to only use them on this Wiki. At the momemnt, I'm only interested in the Leeroy Jenkins one. Michaeldsuarez 18:42, 13 February 2008 (EST)
Go ahead and use the Leeory Jenkins one, as long as you change the caption. That's my only problem. Why did you ever think the plural was "Userboxen" anyway? --HMSVictory 11:14, 14 February 2008 (EST)
It's an old nerd thing, from way back in the days of the VAX computer. The plural of that was always "VAXen", which got genericised to "boxen". See this and this from the Jargon File. And no, I'm not quite old enough to have used a VAX for real! –RpehTCE 11:21, 14 February 2008 (EST)
I do indeed believe that a hushed snigger is in order. *HMSVictory reaches for his anti-laughing device, but instead trips and falls on his Health Bar* --HMSVictory 11:24, 14 February 2008 (EST)
Thanks! Also, I'm not that old either. Michaeldsuarez (talk· contribs· email) 07:55, 17 February 2008 (EST)

Underlining in dialogue[edit]

I just noticed that about a month ago, on the Dagoth Gares page, you deleted the underlining for the topics. I put those underlines there for a reason, so that you could see which words were other dialogue topics. Is there some reason you object to having those there? I think they make it clear from each line of dialogue what the other branches of the conversation are, and as such are useful and shouldn't be removed. --TheRealLurlock Talk 22:12, 12 February 2008 (EST)

Sorry, I only deleted them because I had not seen a lengthy quote such as that with underlining like in the actual game, and I instinctly thought that some uninterested user had somehow copied it from the game on to the site. It also seemed incoherent and unusual. And plus, underlining does not seem necessary to me in order to emphasise a point. There are no pages linking to those dialouge topics and, if you were to encounter that dialogue in the game, the links to other topics would negate the use of a guide on this site. It just seems pointless to me. --HMSVictory 11:29, 13 February 2008 (EST)

Template[edit]

Hey HMSVictory! Nice work on that Moonwalk template! Now that you've finished, you can turn it into an actual template page if you like, so you won't have to copy/paste the code directly onto other people's talk pages. Just thought I'd let you know! You know, since it's so trendy to make your own prize templates these days, I might even make one myself...:) --Eshetalk13:57, 13 February 2008 (EST)

Template page? How should I go about that? --HMSVictory 14:11, 13 February 2008 (EST)
Just make a new page (just like the ones you would have looked at to make yours) and put the code on it. Template:Moonwalk, for example. Again, just mimic the existing templates and you should be fine! --Eshetalk14:14, 13 February 2008 (EST)
Alright, here it is. So basically I would put { {Template:Moonwalk|*Message*} }. Is that right?
Close. You'd do {{Moonwalk|message= }}. Also, you'll want to put the Prize Template category on there so other people can find it. To do that, just add this after the rest of the template: <noinclude>[[Category:Prize Templates|{{PAGENAME}}]]</noinclude>. Aren't templates fun? :) --Eshetalk14:27, 13 February 2008 (EST)
I promised Rpeh I wouldn't put it with the other Prize Templates, as mine is too minor at the moment. Besides, Guildknight never puts any of hers up! --HMSVictory 11:17, 14 February 2008 (EST)
Feel free! I've got no problem with people creating their own prize templates and categorizing them as such! –RpehTCE 11:23, 14 February 2008 (EST)

Golden Penny Racer[edit]

You have been given a Golden Penny Racer!

Your dedication and diligence to the Wiki has not gone unnoticed. A user has seen the progress you've made, and has given you a Golden Penny Racer because of your courtesy. Good Job! This user had the following to say:

Great Job HMS! I am very happy that you figured out how to make a template! Next you have to make an Electric Slide! --Playjex 14:07, 13 February 2008 (EST)

I hear that Playjex! Electric Slide? Now that'll be difficult.... --HMSVictory 14:12, 13 February 2008 (EST)

You could get a theme going - the Macarena, the Locomotion, Walk Like an Egyptian, the Humpty Hump, the Twist... Err, never mind. --TheRealLurlock Talk 14:59, 14 February 2008 (EST)
Ha ha ha! Nice one, Lurlock! Very funny indeed, but I think a site populated by gamers and technicians really shouldn't take up mass online dancing! This isn't World of Warcraft! --HMSVictory 15:06, 14 February 2008 (EST)

Name Code[edit]

I'm perfectly fine with you using that code; I'm just glad someone appreciates it! To change the color, I would copy and paste the html into Word or other text editor and use the find and replace function. Find the old color code and replace the new one. Hope that helps. -- Pureblade | Θ 16:31, 14 February 2008 (EST)

Thanks so much! I have some experience with HTML, but you seem like a natural. I only hope you can get your edit count up, and become an even more useful editor to us! --HMSVictory 10:51, 15 February 2008 (EST)

Nomination[edit]

I don't think we've ever met before, but I just want to say that I saw you withdrew your nomination on the Uespwiki:Patrollers/Nominations page. Nominating yourself was not an idiotic action- you now know what you need to work on to improve. Although you were opposed there were still plenty of positive things said about you. Rather than avoid the recent changes from now on you should learn from the opposing votes, improve on your weaknesses, and re-nominate yourself in the future once you feel you're good enough. Good luck.--Willyhead 13:36, 24 February 2008 (EST)

No. The reactions I have recieved have clearly shown me that I am not needed on the Recent Changes page and that nominating myself in the future will only result in the same reactions. I fully understand the points that the editors have made, and I do not wish to trouble them further. --HMSVictory 13:41, 24 February 2008 (EST)
Actually, I'm not sure you did understand us. You shouldn't take offense at constructive criticism--we wouldn't have taken the time to give it if we didn't think you could improve! I really do appreciate the work you've been doing and I know you could be a good Patroller in time. I hope you'll take Willyhead's advice and re-nominate yourself after you've had some time to work on the things we mentioned. –Eshetalk13:45, 24 February 2008 (EST)
Re-nominate myself?! I'm sorry, but if I've learned anything from this experience, it is that it was, is, and foever will be pointless to try and become a patroller. --HMSVictory 13:48, 24 February 2008 (EST)
Okay, well, I guess if that's your decision, that's fine. It's too bad that you're going to deprive us of your skills, but I guess I won't argue if you've made up your mind! –Eshetalk13:54, 24 February 2008 (EST)
What you should learn is that all the responses to your nomination essentially said "Not just yet" rather than "No", and that your talents were being praised rather than attacked. I'm sure that once you have taken the comments on board you'll be accepted, so please don't rule it out okay? –RpehTCE 14:39, 24 February 2008 (EST)
I am not blaming anyone for their comments. I understand that every vote made was placed there with good reason and explained the points clearly to me. I knew before I even started typing up my nomination that it was unlikely that I would be accepted, and my actions during the voting phase have made my 'only slipped up once' comment redundant. I will not nominate myself for Patroller status again, at least not for a few months. I will also try to avoid reverting any "bad" edits on the Recent Changes page, as I will probably mess up somewhere.
My attention can now turn to my Fanfiction, which I would gladly enjoy putting in my full effort. Please let us forget this incident. On the side: if anyone has any requests or ideas about themselves, please do inform me. --HMSVictory 15:07, 24 February 2008 (EST)

Vandalism[edit]

Hi! For future reference, please do not label edits that are not vandalism as vandalism. One of our basic principles is Assume Good Faith. In other words, any editor who is trying to add relevant information to an article is never a vandal. Even if the information is misplaced or needs major rewording, that does not make it vandalism. Many people will consider it an insult to be called a vandal without good cause, and we don't want to be insulting people who are only trying to help improve the site. Thanks :) --NepheleTalk 14:00, 24 February 2008 (EST)

Firstly, I have alsready been spoken to about his. Secondly, It looked like vandalism to me, and a clear example of it, something that apparently overrides the assumption according to its article. Sorry again, and as I have said before, I'll make sure I stay well away from the Recent Changes page for a while. --HMSVictory 15:01, 24 February 2008 (EST)
At the time, I didn't realize that rpeh had made a comment about it already on the patroller nomination page. On the other hand, it is an issue that I take very seriously. And I'm somewhat worried if you still think that the edit looked like a clear example of vandalism. Vandalism is adding obscenities or nonsense to an article, and that's about it. Those are the only cases where you can unambiguously be sure that the editor had no intention of improving the article. In any other case, there is a legitimate chance that the editor was trying to add missing information to the article; assume good faith means that you assume the edit was supposed to be helpful even when you are not sure. Whether or not you can confirm that the information was correct doesn't matter. There are many other legitimate explanations that you can provide for undoing an edit. And if you look over the undo edits made by other patrollers, you will see that vandalism is probably the least common reason used in explaining why something was undone.
Finally, the whole reason why I and all of the other members of the site take the time to make these posts is to explain how the site works, so that you can benefit from the information and learn how to be a better editor. If we didn't want to help you, it would be much easier for everyone to not respond to your posts and stop providing feedback. But, frankly, it is very discouraging when you selectively ignore most of what has been said (for example, by overlooking or misreading nearly everything that was said in the patroller nomination), or when you apparently mock our attempts to help you (for example, by labeling your own edits as vandalism). It's hard for us to help you if you prefer to disbelieve nearly everything that we write. --NepheleTalk 16:30, 24 February 2008 (EST)
I have not ignored anything other editors have said about me. I fully respect their opinions and have made no attempt to contest them. What I am saying is that I have made a huge mistake concerning that edit, and that I need to consider how to approach other editors' contributions, whether they be good or bad. The edit itself, which I only glimpsed at before reverting, seemed like vandalsim to me. After further inspection, it is clear to me that it was not vandalism, and deserved a place on the article. I also understand that I should not be a Patroller, as my attitude needs serious improvement. If I have misread anything, it was certainly not deliberate, and labeling my edits as vandalism, well, you can see my reply below. I have a tendancy to assume that anonymous edits are usually bad ones, and judge them with extreme prejudice. This is my flaw, and no one else's. This is why I have withdrawn my nomination. --HMSVictory 11:02, 25 February 2008 (EST)
