The Vampire Lord is a new vampire transformation included in the Dawnguard downloadable content. In this form, you will be able to fly (hover) as well as have the ability to drain the life-force from an NPC through the hands, much like a spell. Some aspects are similar to Lycanthropy such as being attacked by NPCs while in this form, though unlike werewolves, you can transform in and out of the Vampire Lord form at will.

Male Vampire Lord
Female Vampire Lord

Description[edit]

Vampire Lords are tall, humanoid, bat-like creatures with sharp talons and wings. They are able to use blood magic and other dark powers, and can either hover and use spells or remain on the ground and fight with their deadly claws. In Skyrim, the creatures exist only within Lord Harkon's bloodline and, according to Serana, the family's vampirism was a gift directly from Molag Bal himself.

Gaining the power[edit]

In order to transform into a Vampire Lord you must use the power, Vampire Lord which will change you into a vampire lord until you decide to revert back. To gain the vampire lord power you must either join Lord Harkon during the Bloodline quest or ask Serana to transform you into a vampire. Note that Serana can only transform you into a vampire after the quest Chasing Echoes has been completed.

Once you have the Vampire Lord power you can use it to transform at will as many times as you want. To change back to normal you must use the revert form power.

Abilities[edit]

You gain progress to your next Vampire Lord perk by defeating enemies with Drain Life or a bite power attack (performing a power attack on an enemy with little remaining health).

A Vampire Lord hovering
  • Natural abilities:
    • Bats - A dodge move where you turn into a swarm of bats and fly away a short distance.
    • Vampire Sight - See things that normal eyes cannot.
    • Raise Dead - Raise an enemy to fight by your side.

Advantages[edit]

  • Additional magicka, health and stamina, which is dependent on your level (see notes).
  • Magicka regeneration is increased to 10% of your total magicka per second instead of the usual 3%
  • Faster movement while hovering and able to move over obstacle such as water, spikes, or pressure plates.
  • Sprinting makes you fly at a high speed across the land with the benefits of the hover mode.
  • Powerful melee attacks.
  • Access to vampiric spells and powers not normally available through spell tomes or dragon shouts.
  • Crimes committed as a Vampire Lord are not attributed to your character (no bounty).
  • No carry weight encumbrance (though you also cannot pick anything up).
  • Can revert back to normal form any time you want and you can transform back and forth as many times as you want.

Disadvantages[edit]

  • Forced third-person view.
  • No access to the menu as it only brings up the vampire skill tree.
  • Transforming or being seen in Vampire Lord form will make NPCs hostile.
  • You may also get stuck in some small doorways if you are in a dungeon or house. To alleviate this, try turning sideways so that your wings go through the doorway first. In most cases, you can get through.
  • All disadvantages associated with the "lesser" Skyrim vampires also affect a Vampire Lord (increasing sunlight weakness primary among them, feeding to alleviate, etc.).
  • All armor, weapons, equipment, etc. cannot be used while in Vampire Lord form. (except for the blood rings and amulets (unlocked via quests), which will still give you the bonus)
  • Cannot pick up any items or open any containers (including loot from kills).
  • Cannot use spells, shouts, or powers other than those specific to the Vampire Lord.
  • Cannot initiate dialogue with anyone, although you can respond if someone confronts you.
  • You will lose your racial bonuses.
  • Transformation takes a few seconds, during which you can be attacked.

Modes[edit]

While in Vampire Lord form, you can choose to cast spells while hovering. You can also choose to stop hovering and go into melee mode, where you can "fight as the beasts do" with your claws.

While you are hovering above the ground, your right hand is used for the drain life spell and cannot be changed. Your left hand is used for your "blood magic" spells such as summon gargoyle and the reanimate spell. By bringing up the in-game favorites menu you can switch the spell in your left hand and your active vampire power.

To descend to the ground and enter melee mode simply press the sneak button. In this mode you fight using your claws in a similar fashion to werewolves. You may switch between modes at any time.

Your active vampire power can be used in either mode by pressing the shout button. Some powers must be briefly recharged before they can be used again.

Notes[edit]

  • In vampire lord form, you will still gain 10% regeneration to magicka, health and stamina even when outside during daylight.
  • In vampire lord form, the player's damage rating is 10 at level 1. It then increases in five point intervals at every fifth level, beginning at level 11. The maximum damage rating is 50 points at level 46.
    • The armor rating behaves the same way, starting with 100 at level 1 and increases in 25 point intervals with the same scaling intervals as unarmed damage. The maximum armor rating is 300 at level 46.
    • Both unarmed damage and armor also affected by the Necromage perk.
  • You also gain additional magicka, health and stamina depending on your level when in vampire lord form.
    • Additional magicka is 40 at level 1. It then increases in 20 point intervals at every fifth level, beginning at level 11. The maximum additional magicka is 200 at level 46.
    • Additional health is 50 at level 1. It then increases in 25 point intervals at every fifth level, beginning at level 11. The maximum additional health is 250 at level 46.
    • Additional stamina is 0 at level 1. It then increases in 10 point intervals at every fifth level, except for level 41 and 46 where the increase is 20 points, beginning at level 11. The maximum additional stamina is 100 at level 46.
    • These attribute bonuses are also affected by the Necromage perk. This means that at level 46, with the Power of the Grave perk, you will gain 312.5 (437.5 with the "Ring of the Erudite") magicka, 375 (500 with the "Ring of The Beast") health and 187.5 stamina.
  • The Night Cloak perk heals you for the amount of damage dealt, it also stacks if there are multiple enemies surrounding you. It should be noted that the bats only appear when an enemy comes in close to you and they will disappear sometime after there is no enemy around anymore.
  • Using the wings to hover allows you to fly across bodies of water without having to swim. (You cannot swim while in Vampire Lord form; going into melee mode while hovering above water will make you just walk over it.)
  • You can still take damage from long falls while in hover mode.
  • Skin will become dark and cloudy if you don't feed for a while.
  • A summoned gargoyle will not disappear if you revert back to your regular form.
  • To perform a "power bite", simply use a power attack against a humanoid target when their health is extremely low. Remember that you need the requisite amount of stamina to perform a power bite. Further, the power bite only works against humanoids. It will not work against creatures, Draugr and skeletons. It will work against other vampires. Finally, remember that you must be standing on the ground to do a power bite. The range of the bite is reasonable and thus you can often grab an enemy who is attempting to flee.
    • An effective tactic is to use ranged attacks initially, then move in towards the end on the ground for the power bite finishing move.
  • When transfoming into vampire lord form, first your maximum health will be increased -> then you will gain the bonus from the Power of the Grave perk -> after that you will gain the additional attributes (based on your level). This means you will be able to heal when transforming (up to 300 health at level 46).
  • When transforming back, first you will lose all additional stats gained -> then your maximum health will be decreased back to the original value. This means it is possible to die when transforming back with low health (you must have more than 300 health above level 46)
  • When Serana is following you, the Drain Life spell's damage significantly decreases.
  • You will not lose any vampire lord perks if you cure yourself of vampirism and then ask Serana to turn you again.

Bugs[edit]

  • When first changing into the Vampire Lord and entering spell mode, the Raise Dead spell that is automatically equipped to the left hand may not work on any creature or person. ?
    • Equipping the spell from the Favorites menu will fix this.
  • If you use the Revert Form power, and then use a perk before returning to human form, you will retain the Health Drain spell in the right hand, which still leads to skill increase for the Vampire Lord form if used to kill enemies, but NPCs will not be hostile to you. ?
    • This can be easily fixed by equipping a spell or a weapon in the right hand.
  • Sometimes when you are made a Vampire Lord by either Harkon or Serana you will not be able to use the Vampire Lord power to turn into one. ?
    • PC This can by fixed by typing set dlc1vampirelorddisallow to 0 in the console.
  • The showracemenu face complexion choice applies the selected change, but the choice does not save in many cases and is reset to a default on the next load. Only the last three complexions available work for a vampire lord. ?
  • Sometimes when changing into a Vampire Lord, you cannot switch to melee mode, use Revert Form ability or use any spells. ?

Achievements[edit]

One achievement is related to being a Vampire Lord:

  • SR-achievement-Vampire Mastered.png Vampire MasteredDG (20 points/Bronze) — Acquire 11 vampire perks
    • There are 11 available perks, so all of the vampire perks must be unlocked for this achievement.
