Welcome[edit]

Hello Alaston! Welcome to the wiki. I hope you enjoy using the site and find the information on it useful. If you decide you want to help improve any of our pages, we're always welcoming to new editors so feel free. You might want to look at our Getting Started page for some tips on how to begin, then play in our Sandbox for a while to practice. If you need any help or advice, please ask one of our mentors. Enjoy! –RpehTCE 15:37, 31 January 2008 (EST)

Wiki Editing[edit]

Hi, Alaston, welcome to UESP. The purpose of a wiki is allow everyone to collaboratively work together to improve articles. That means that everybody is welcome to edit articles, no matter what a person's individual talents or weaknesses may be. If everybody contributes based upon their talents, the hope is that in the end all of the different aspects necessary to make a good article are covered. If one person knows some information that needs to be added to the article, that person should add the information, whether or not that person knows the wiki standards for layout, formatting, etc. Someone else who is more knowledgeable about wiki formatting can then come along and revise the first person's contribution by providing any necessary formatting. That's the way that the site works, and reviewing Recent changes will show you countless examples of that happening every day.

In other words, you are free to contribute to UESP articles without knowing a single thing about our style guide or wiki formatting. When other editors make changes to your contribution, those editors are not "having a fit" or trying to be "Gods of the Oblivion Wiki." Those other editors are simply trying to help out and do their small part to make the site be as good as possible. Subsequent revisions to your contribution are not a criticism of what you did. For more information you may want to read over the section on After Your Edit is Saved. The only reason that Eshe suggested you look over the Style Guide is that you made a comment suggesting that you wanted to reduce the chance that your edits would subsequently be revised. But if you'd prefer to never read over the style guide, and never try to learn about our standards, you are free to ignore them and still continue contributing to the site :)

As for the specific issue with line breaks on Oblivion:Red Diamond Jewelry (which I have to assume is the previous example to which you have been referring). Nobody criticized you for the line breaks; other editors simply responded when you asked why they had been removed. And the fundamental problem with the line breaks is that while they may have positioned the page content perfectly for your particular monitor and font size, trying to adjust a page to suit a single person's settings invariably makes the page look worse for people with larger/smaller monitors or larger/smaller font size preferences. Again, nobody is expecting that you already know that information. But other editors who are more familiar with those issues or who are familiar with the site's standards are likely to look over any article after you make an edit, and those editors will revise the article accordingly. You can choose to ignore those edits and assume those editors have reasons for their revisions. Or you can ask about the edits, in which case people will respond, assuming that you want to learn about UESP's standards.

We're all just here trying to help improve UESP, and we would welcome your assistance. But it would make it a lot easier for everyone else to help you and provide feedback to your comments if you could keep in mind that we are all just trying to work together towards the same goal. Discussions tend to be much more pleasant for everyone involved if the discussion stays focussed on the topic of immediate interest, and if everybody tries to just provide constructive suggestions about how to improve the article. (If you're interested in reading, there is an article on Consensus that may also be helpful). Bringing up previous, unrelated situations or criticizing other contributors is generally not productive. Thanks! --NepheleTalk 01:14, 16 February 2008 (EST)

Let's Try Again[edit]

We seem to have got off on the wrong foot, and I'd like to try and rectify that. Just to make it clear, I don't focus only on your edits and nor am I singling you out for special attention. As a site admin, I spend a lot of time on the Recentchanges page keeping track of the changes to the site and that's why I've been one of the people to change or reply to your edits. As far as our recent altercation on Oblivion_talk:Unique Items#Staves is concerned, it really wasn't intended to be insulting. I read your question about Fin Gleam (and replied but Nephele's reply beat mine) and then your question about Staves and read it more as a "Where are the staves?" question than one about why they weren't included. Given two questions that appeared to be of a similar nature, I replied with a suggestion about the search page that was honestly intended to help. You'd be surprised how often people don't see the links on the pages; I know that for a fact because I did it not long ago!

Re-reading the comment in question, I still don't think it merited the response it received but I can accept the judgment of others that it could be read as being inflammatory. If you read it that way then I apologise; it really wasn't intentional.

You obviously want to improve the site so let's put this behind us and get on with doing so. –RpehTCE 13:56, 23 February 2008 (EST)

Disruptive edits[edit]

Stop digging now you're in the hole. You've got your answer and you're just embarrassing yourself now so stop disrupting the site. rpeh •TCE 16:13, 19 January 2011 (UTC)
