Welcome[edit]

Wow! How can you still not have anything on your user talk page? Seems to me like it's time for a long overdue welcome to UESPWiki! And you can take it as a good sign that I haven't bugged you on your talk page until now: unfortunately most of my welcome messages are needed to point out mistakes that editors have made. In other words, you've just been doing such a good job at not making any mistakes that I haven't had any excuses to welcome you. So keep up the great work! And you already know how to contact me if you have any questions :)

By the way, if you're still interested in tackling some books, you might have noticed that I'm finally getting around to my long-promised reorganization project. Of course that was probably so long ago that you've lost interest by now ;) --NepheleTalk 03:51, 5 August 2007 (EDT)

Yay, my first Talk page submission! :P Yeah, from what you said, I thought that was a little ambitious of a project for my editing skills. I also tend to lose interest in things quickly, so something where I sit down for a few hours and do loads of work is no problem (like the Daedric Shrine dialogue)...something that would stretch over weeks is probably likely to end up on the long list of "projects started but incomplete due to ADD". Or, at least it WOULD end up on that list if I had the attention span to make such a list in the first place. :) --Robin Hood 12:15, 5 August 2007 (EDT)

Easter Eggs[edit]

Thanks for the message. I though nobody was going to talk to me. Michaeldsuarez (talk· contribs· email) 19:27, 21 February 2008 (EST)

I get it.[edit]

3.14159265358979323846264338327950288619, or something like it? I've found other fun ways of using the number, myself:

Sir I bear a rhyme excelling

In mystic force and magic spelling... — Unsigned comment by Muthsera (talkcontribs)

The third-last digit is wrong (should be a 4), but yeah, you're on the right track. ;) No, I didn't have to look that up...I'll let you keep guessing as to how many digits I know it to. Suffice to say it's a stupidly large number for any practical calculations, but nowhere near what I've heard some people have memorized it to. --Robin Hood 13:38, 10 March 2008 (EDT)
Ack, and I forgot to sign! How embarrassing. But I just gave you what I keep in my head, though now I need to remember that that 6 is a 4. Anyway, I see you're also a newly declared Mentor? Well, well. Aren't we indulging in our pride today? Muthsera 13:41, 10 March 2008 (EDT)
LOL! Yeah, I figured I'd been around the block enough times I should probably be nice and help others. What's more, I'm not only declaring myself a new mentor and updating my profile a bit, I'm finally getting around to changing my signature to boot. This'll be my first test to see if it actually works as it should. It's amazing what you can get done when your boss has you re-generating several hundred reports, effectively tying up your work computer. ;) --Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 13:49, 10 March 2008 (EDT)
I applaud the new signature, it seems spiffy and dandy. Muthsera 13:56, 10 March 2008 (EDT)

You have been given a pi!

In celebration of 3/14, someone's baked a pi to give you! Aren't you lucky? Keep up the good work, and happy Pi-day! -- Muthsera 10:44, 14 March 2008 (EDT)

LOL! Thanks Muthsera, this really made my day! --Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 12:00, 14 March 2008 (EDT)
Was wondering if anyone's made your day for today. Hey, Robin, how're you doing? Muthsera 15:39, 22 April 2008 (EDT)
Is there something special about 04/22? (Or 22/04?) Anyway, no, nobody's made my day today. :) I'm doing okay, how're you? --Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 18:34, 22 April 2008 (EDT)
Naw, just saw you make an edit, so I decided to pop in for a hello. I'm decent. Haven't killed anyone today, you know? Muthsera 12:58, 24 April 2008 (EDT)
LOL! Yeah, there's days when I consider it a good day because I didn't kill anyone too! --Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 13:13, 24 April 2008 (EDT)

Drain vs Damage vs Absorb[edit]

Thanks for looking at this, I'm glad you liked the writup. I'm guessing I should try posting it again? I wasn't sure about making the bullets complete sentences, frequently on things like resumes you can make bullets incomplete statements, and then leave the period off the end, but if the site has an informal policy about that, I'll be sure to conform. Is maintaining the content here a full time job for you? I feel like it really could be, there's so much content!

I've made the update. I changed a few more things including changing "affect" to "effect" in some places, changing "affect" to "involve" in some places, rewriting the "four important ways" section at the top, and making the corrections you suggested. Thanks again for your help.

I'm still the new kid on the block, but as a general rule, if a prolific editor approves of a change, it'll usually stay that way. If Nephele or one of the other editors feels strongly about not letting it go through, we'll use the talk pages to figure out what we want to do with it. So no guarantees that it'll stay, but as I said in my post on Nephele's talk page, I think it's much better overall than what was there.
Oh and signing your posts "officially" involves clicking on the "signature" button (second from the right). People forget all the time, including myself, but since you've had a couple of unsigned posts now, I thought I'd mention it. As a rule, you're expected to sign any message you leave on a talk (aka discussion) page, but not on a main page. --Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 12:08, 12 March 2008 (EDT)

Robin Hood

Thanks for the information, I didn't realize about signing, I'm very new to Wikis and Blogging. It seems strange that people wouldn't be expected to sign on a main page, but would on a talk page.
By the way, I noticed on your profile it says that you have chronic fatigue. My sister was diagnosed with chronic fatigue 5 years ago, and two years ago it had gotten really bad, and nothing she had tried had worked, so she decided to try acupuncture. She started at two sessions per week and at first the symptoms would go away and she would feel better for a small amount of time after the acupuncture session, but the affects are cumulative and as the weeks and the sessions progressed the chronic fatigue symptoms stayed away longer and longer. She went to having acupuncture sessions once per week, then once every other week, then once per month, and now only a few times per year, and her symptoms stay away for months in between sessions. --Matt (TalkE-mailContribs) March 12, 2008 4:10 PM (ET)

Oblivion Gate Markers[edit]

I couldn't have found this page a month ago, nooo, that would have been too easy... Thanks, this is great.  :) - Aliana71.9.18.26 21:23, 5 October 2008 (EDT)

hmm... If "too many quest markers" makes oblivion blow up, why not just show the nearest one?

Nice idea, but I have no idea how one would implement that...if it's even possible. If anybody can tell me how, though, that would be a great addition, assuming it doesn't suffer from the same problem just because of the number of possible quest markers, even if they're not actually displayed. --Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 23:58, 5 October 2008 (EDT)

If you're using this mod to help with 100% Completion, it's highly advisable to complete at least Deliver The Heir, and ideally Dagon Shrine, BEFORE you do any significant exploring. Gates are only opened when you enter a cell, so if you run all over Tamriel's wilderness first, you'll have to do it all again to actually find the gates.--Aliana 15:30, 28 October 2008 (EDT)

The mod only shows open gates, not ones that haven't shown up yet or ones that have already been closed. It'd be less-than-useful otherwise. --Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 17:35, 28 October 2008 (EDT)
Yes. That's my point.  :)
If you explore the entire world when no gates CAN open, then complete Dagon Shrine, there will be 0 gates on the map, and to find the 50 that "are" there now requires you to explore the entire world again. That's a LOT of wasted hours backtracking over the same terrain.
If you complete Dagon Shrine when you've only explored say 10% of the world, you only need to re-enter that 10% (and more likely, none of it), and all the gates will show up as you travel around the world doing Normal Questy Stuff. --Aliana 18:37, 28 October 2008 (EDT)
Ah, okay, I see what you're saying now. Of course, since (as you say) gates open as you approach them, if you focus on areas that are heavily-populated with "potential" gates, you may not actually have to re-explore the entire map. Conceivably, you could run around in a very large circle until the 50% chance of opening a gate (after the Dagon Shrine quest) was triggered for the closest 50 gates. It seems a silly way to do it, but I'm sure someone out there will derive amusement out of only opening a specific 50 gates...maybe only opening the south-most 50, or even writing their name in Oblivion gates? ;) --Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 14:01, 29 October 2008 (EDT)
You're still not quite getting me, I think. It's not about trying to control where the gates are (though you've just given me an idea: don't go near wilderness master trainers (Bralsa etc) until you HAVE opened 50 gates), just "how do I spend as little time as possible riding around the world at random trying to find them?" --Aliana 18:17, 29 October 2008 (EDT)
Yeah, I got that part, no worries. You'll almost certainly want to allow gates to open ASAP, though that said, I did it the other way around once and found it such a pleasure to be able to concentrate on whatever tasks I was at rather than worrying about random Oblivion gates and their associated monsters popping up at annoying times. My larger point was just that you won't necessarily have to re-travel the entire world to get them to open up, though it seems likely that most people would if they saved the Main Quest till much later on. Of course, you could also avoid the issue of re-exploring altogether by doing the Main Quest absolute last, then avoiding all but the fixed Oblivion gates. --Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 18:27, 29 October 2008 (EDT)

HI[edit]

Hey, i am new to this Wikia err, whatever someone would call it... well, i was wondering how could i get a good picture of my character? I would yous my capture card but i have an Xbox and the only time you really see your character is in the Journal. Also can you fill me in on the rules, (cursing, fanfic, ect...) — Unsigned comment by Ptowery (talkcontribs) at 00:16 on 12 October 2008

It's normally referred to as a "wiki" (without the "a"). I'm not sure how you can get a good picture of your character on the X-box, as I don't own one, but I think a digital camera might be your only option. As for the rules, I'd suggest taking a quick look at the Getting Started page, which outlines most of the basic rules. Cursing is not allowed, as this is intended to be an all-ages site. If you're interested in writing Fan Fiction, I suggest you check out the Fanfiction page. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask. --Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 00:37, 12 October 2008 (EDT)

Signing[edit]

Since the "standard" is to sign comments, why does it have to be done explicitly for every single post? Wouldn't it make a lot more sense to default to SIGNED, and have to add the squigglies if you DIDN'T want that? Aliana 19:20, 13 October 2008 (EDT)

Quite probably, but I think the problem comes when you're interspersing comments or making edits or anything of that nature. Plus the fact that you're only supposed to sign talk pages...but sometimes we do it elsewhere as well. Overall, it's probably too confusing for the wiki software to auto-sign anything. It might be that it's more intelligent than I thought and has that capability somewhere, but my guess is that it doesn't due to the complexities. One of the Administrators might know more. --Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 19:28, 13 October 2008 (EDT)
