help[edit]

Hi Robin,

I hope you can help. This is Biffa here and I've forgotten my email address used and password. I've recently left my wife and currently have no internet. I need to change my email address with you to benethoukes07@goggle.com and have my password reset. I can answer any questions via email to prove who I am, but I really want to get back involved with this site to give me someting positive to think about. Thanks for any help you can give. I'm not sure the next time I'll be online as am in a refuge home at the moment for people fleeing abuse. Cheers. Benet (Biffa). 46.183.195.218 13:55, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

I'll send you an e-mail with your old e-mail address first, if that helps. If not, then we'll go to Plan B and I'll reset your password and e-mail it to you. Robin Hood  (talk) 17:09, 5 November 2015 (UTC)
I did e-mail you, but haven't heard back from you. Did you receive my e-mail? Robin Hood  (talk) 04:55, 12 November 2015 (UTC)
Hi Robin, Thanks, I'm currently trying to get access back on new email, not sure whether I forgot the password or if it was magically changed, hopefully will have an answer by tomorrow and am intending on finding a hotspot to connect through to try again. Sorry I've not been online. It's such a pain being without wifi when you spend your life connected! Speak soon. Biffa 46.183.195.218 12:08, 13 November 2015 (UTC)
Hi Robin, me again, well completely failed to regain access to either of my email accounts, think the wife is screwing me at every turn, because i left her. So I've had to create a brand new email account without any links that she can utilise. My new account is benethoukes71@gmail.com, If you can send email to that account I'll be able to verify who I am, etc. Still in a refuge, so internet is from MacDonald's car park or similar at the moment, but hopefully they find somewhere for me and eldest daughter soon. Take care and speak soon. Thanks in advance. Biffa. 46.233.116.169 11:48, 19 November 2015 (UTC)
Hi Robin, thanks for your assistance in my login, I finally have a stable internet and home. 16:01, 25 February 2016 (UTC)
No problem, Biffa. Glad you finally made it back! Robin Hood  (talk) 19:18, 25 February 2016 (UTC)

Signature[edit]

Dear RobinHood70, I tried to change my signature several times to add a template in it. However, I have failed to make a template like 師傅龙(Sifu Lóng) and instead only printed some Chinese characters. I feel that the Chinese characters are not enough. 師傅龙 (talk) 16:11, 24 January 2016 (UTC)

Hi ProphetDragon/Sifu! If all you're looking for is the characters, you should just be able to enter them into the Signature box in your preferences. I just copied the text you wanted, and it worked fine for me. If you're trying to get the colour as well, though, then copy the following line into your Signature box and make sure to tick the "treat as wiki markup" box right below the Signature box.
[[User:ProphetDragon|<span style="color:gold;background:black">師傅龙(Sifu Lóng)</span>]] ([[User talk:ProphetDragon|talk]])
That's just a quick example—you're free to format it however you wish, as long as it's kept reasonably short. Robin Hood  (talk) 20:09, 24 January 2016 (UTC)

Username change request[edit]

I know I haven't done anything noteworthy on/for the wiki at all, and that I should wait until I've made more edits. However, I do plan on being a more active contributor, and would like to change from this name ASAP. It's the name of a Skyrim character of mine that no longer appeals to me. I would like to change it to 'Cipher'. Korodac (talk) 08:11, 27 January 2016 (UTC)

As I mentioned on Legoless' talk page, I'd like to see a longer period of time and activity before we consider a usurpation for Cipher. If you'd like to pick a variation of Cipher, however, I'm happy to change your name as long as the name isn't already used. Robin Hood  (talk) 16:58, 27 January 2016 (UTC)

Contraband[edit]

That recent bot run has removed more than just sic tags. Would it be possible to search for deleted info? I'm almost certain there are others with edited descriptions but I can't remember the item names. —Legoless (talk) 04:13, 26 March 2016 (UTC)

Yes, there were a few like that that were planned, so to speak...anywhere that there appeared to be a legitimate change in the original text. That's why the bot left a list of things for human review on its results page. The sic tags were due to a minor bug, so I'm fixing those ones right now. The remainder will also need to be reviewed at some point and any appropriate links, etc., reinstated. Robin Hood  (talk) 04:20, 26 March 2016 (UTC)

Understone Keep Edit[edit]

Hi RH. I just wanted to let you know that I didn't mean to breach etiquette when adding the edit you recently removed from Understone Keep. I did it merely to give other players a solid solution to a problem that the mod makers seem to have ignored for quite some time now. If it it okay I would actually like it if we could keep edits like this up so that players experiencing issues may learn the solutions they provide and ease their frustrations instead of hunting all over the internet for answers. As for bringing it up at their site, I have had no ability or avail to do so, however if you would like to try you are very welcome to do so. Maybe you will have better luck than I did. Again sorry for the breach in etiquette and I hope you understand the goodness in my intentions.

~JS

No worries. I can understand your interest in presenting a solution to the problem. You're welcome to post it on the talk page for the article if you wish. I won't post anything on the Bug Tracker site, since I haven't experienced the issue myself, so I can't provide any details. If you have or if you do in the future, give me the link—I'd be interested in following it. Robin Hood  (talk) 15:43, 27 March 2016 (UTC)
Thank you for understanding RH, I'll be sure to keep any workarounds to bugs like these within the discussion page of the location in question. Just as a heads up, I think I made similar edits in 1 or 2 other pages but can't remember for sure. So if you or any of the other Admins happens across any similar posts I have made, please just disregard them and remove them. Thanks again. 23:07, 27 March 2016 (EST)

South of Skyrim[edit]

Old conversation: User_talk:RobinHood70/Archive2014#South of Skyrim and User talk:Morrolan#South of Skyrim, Continued

I recently replaced my Skyrim 360 disc. Now, I've noticed a few changes between it and my original Skyrim disc (which was failing from wear and tear over years of play), but key among them is the south of Skyrim passage appears to be cut off at exactly the same point as where you reported running into the invisible wall.

So it appears that this is a glitch on particular discs of Skyrim. I bought my original Skyrim disc around Christmas 2011. It's possible the glitch was only on 360 discs as well, as the only two people to report it as far as I know were both 360 players. --Morrolan (talk) 20:53, 15 April 2016 (UTC)

That makes me wonder if it was actually version-specific. Unfortunately, there have been changes made to Skyrim on the PC that don't even allow you to play it without the update, so I can't check that for myself. Robin Hood  (talk) 22:23, 15 April 2016 (UTC)
No, it's definitely disc-specific. I was playing with the same update on both discs (on XBox, in order to stay connected to XBox Live and have your achievements uploaded etc. you need to always have the latest update of all games installed). This means that they made changes to the discs that were not overridden by the XBox Live updates. --Morrolan (talk) 23:25, 15 April 2016 (UTC)
Interesting! Robin Hood  (talk) 00:40, 16 April 2016 (UTC)

Op[edit]

I was actually deopped while I was busy with some personal things that kept me away from the Internet for a few months. I would like it back (I'm also going to try to be more active now that I'm through a different personal hell on Monday). When would be a good time to get it back so we can get some more admin presence going on? --AKB Talk Cont Mail 02:52, 9 June 2016 (UTC)

I'm usually in the channel for a few hours every day or two, even if most of the time it just sits there dead. :) If you want to just catch me at some point, we can do that, or if you want to set up a more specific day/time, that works too. If the former, I'm more likely to be on in the afternoon/evening Eastern Time. Robin Hood  (talk) 03:59, 9 June 2016 (UTC)

Bound Bow[edit]

hello is your creation kit wrong because mine says 206 for bound bow but it keeps going back to 207 thank you — Unsigned comment by 100.2.202.240 (talk) at 23:45 on 24 June 2016‎

Sorry, I was looking at our own version of the game data online, which in some cases differs from the CK, usually because we've fixed bugs that are present in the CK. This is one of those cases. The value in the actual Creation Kit is rounded differently than it is in-game. For this spell, those two values differ. You can confirm this on the PC version of the game by starting a new character and then using the following console commands:
player.addspell 211ed
player.setav conjuration 0
Once you've done that, open up your spells and you will see that the cost is, indeed, 207. Robin Hood  (talk) 00:20, 25 June 2016 (UTC)

Edit Warring[edit]

I'm having trouble with editing a page and multiple users reverting all of my edits and telling me that they aren't accurate. I have sources and can prove all the assertions I'm making but instead of looking up or testing the new details on the article they're just reverting all of my edits with the edit summary "You're wrong".
They've gone so far as to tell me I'm going to get in trouble for updating the page and continue to take down and remove all the information I have added. I've asked them to contact me on my talk page and left messages on the article's talk page and one of their talk pages and no responses other than the continued vandalism to my edits. Since I can't revert their edits anymore because they'll just keep changing them back I am appealing to a higher power.Vainamoinen -Talk -Stuff 18:43, 24 July 2016 (UTC)

They've responded but no change. So... appeal.Vainamoinen -Talk -Stuff 19:00, 24 July 2016 (UTC)

Search namespaces[edit]

Hey, I'm not sure if this is something you can do, or if we need Dave, but could Legends get added as a namespace to search in? Jeancey (talk) 18:42, 28 July 2016 (UTC)

He's the one that wrote the custom search, but there's nothing preventing me from updating it. Should be easy enough. I'll let you know once it's updated. (I take that back, it looks like Nephele wrote it originally.) Robin Hood  (talk) 19:15, 28 July 2016 (UTC)
Done. See CP post in a sec. Robin Hood  (talk) 20:06, 28 July 2016 (UTC)

Some Help[edit]

I've created another draft for a Legends template, this time it's Legends opponents, could you take a look at it please? Thanks, and sorry if I'm asking the wrong person. - KINMUNETALK﴿ 10:22, 31 July 2016 (UTC)

It was pretty good; most of what was left was harmless and wouldn't have affected the display at all, at least not in that context. And yes, I'm one of the people you can ask for help with templates. Enodoc and TheRealLurlock also work with them a fair bit, and there are probably a couple of other users I'm not thinking of right now. Robin Hood  (talk) 18:42, 31 July 2016 (UTC)

Books[edit]

The changes to books template seem to have had some adverse affect in the mod namespaces. The books there are requesting previously deleted categories and have emptied the current ones (eg Tes3Mod:Tamriel Rebuilt/Above It All). Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 22:45, 4 August 2016 (UTC)

Yes, I'd noticed that and just put a fix in for it a few minutes ago. If you have another look at the above link, you should see the correct categories now. The job queue will take a while to update all the categories, though. Robin Hood  (talk) 22:56, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
I saw that after I'd posted. Another oddity in the No Collection category, its ignoring sorting of any type. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 23:10, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for spotting that! It should be fixed too, once the job queue gets through it all. Not sure why I made that particular mistake. I should know better! Robin Hood  (talk) 23:56, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
Two more requests now that we've had time to look at the new setup. One, would it be possible to strip the parenthesis from the collection categorisation but not the displayed collection parameter (or maybe the displayed name doesn't need the parenthesis given its already identified as the collection)? My only worry there was the Skill books but there is no overlap. Also I think I'd rather see the compilation in the summary box, as it would give otherwise empty boxes something (eg Khajiit's Lost Journal), though possibly as an explanation rather than just a box (eg, This is a compilation of a number of books assembled for easier reading) or some such. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 11:37, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
I'm not sure if this was what you were looking for for the first part. If it is, it's not a template change, just a page change. Are there other pages that would need that? For the second part, I tried a number of things and most of them looked a bit out of place to me, so I settled for adding a sentence to the Note section. How does that look to you? Robin Hood  (talk) 18:22, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
Not quite, sorry I'm having trouble describing this. It's to stop the parenthesis being generated as part of the category, so they would appear the same as you have that category now, but without the need for any of that coding in the category page. The category I'm concerned about is Category:Online-Books-by-Collection. I think the faction template does this through the catname parameter, so that categories are not generated with for example "-factions-Mages Guild (faction)". Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 18:58, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

() Okay, so, like this, then? (I forced the first one to update; the others are in the job queue and will get updated later.) The individual category pages ending in "(collection)" would still need their categories update and the content moved. Robin Hood  (talk) 19:46, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

Thanks once again. I was probably somewhat quick to make the category changes but any book I loaded had the new category even if it didn't register in it. The other category looks much cleaner without the parenthesis so you can leave it as is now. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 20:00, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
NP, let me know if there's anything else I can do. Robin Hood  (talk) 20:06, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

ESL[edit]

I know you already uninstalled it, and didn't like it, but we could use a man with your set of skills (and most likely, your bot). Thankfully, ESL isn't that big of a game, so I don't think it should be the largest work load we've ever seen, especially compared to ESO and Skyrim. I called out for your help in this conversation, and if we could use some form of data mining to knock out most of ESL, it will certainly make the following wiki work easier. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 14:20, 5 August 2016 (UTC)

I'll let Dave handle extracting the graphics, cuz he's got far more experience with that than I do. I'll re-install the game and see what I can find for card data. Other than the images, card data is small enough that it might be stored online. We'll see. Robin Hood  (talk) 17:37, 5 August 2016 (UTC)

Arbitration on Cleric Arvina‎[edit]

I'd like to request some sort of intervention on an issue at Online talk:Cleric Arvina‎. The user Tib has resorted to slinging insults and not even bothering to address the real issue. This kind of behaviour is unbecoming of one hoping to achieve a position of responsibility and is damaging both to him and the wiki. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 21:40, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

Tib is a "she", and I almost don't want to say anything and cause a stir, but it's a one-off comment from Tib that, while could have been said slightly more gracefully perhaps, isn't as bad as you're making it. She's asked for clarification, as has Legoless of what you meant and what your concerns are, and said you added the text on the article, whilst repeating your own words. I can't see how this is a borderline personal attack, like you said it is, and I think that calling on Rob like some heinous crime was committed, demanding an apology of Tib, and then throwing an opposition vote immediately after for her patroller nomination without any real reason why she isn't fit for the job is just you being petty. -damon  talkcontribs 21:59, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
While the discussion is a bit tense, I don't see anything there that requires intervention. Since the issue is currently being discussed on the Community Portal, I think the discussion at Cleric Arvina will resolve itself naturally once the CP discussion is done. Robin Hood  (talk) 22:12, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

Linebreaks[edit]

And the Nst template. I've never quite figured out how to make them work within that template as there is no html code that seems to allow the following paragraph to be indented for books. I think I once managed to make it work but have no idea where to start looking. In any case if you can figure out a defined way for it to work that would be of immense value, as any previous attempts would have been fudges.

Specifically in Redguards, Their History and Their Heroes it's the sixth last paragraph ("Frandar Hunding was sought out...") that needs to be split into two from "The singers fled from..." The template seems to ignore any manual linebreaks (same as it ignores spaces that aren't within other characters) and no combination of <br>s allows for indentation. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 00:02, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

Yeah, conditional line-breaks like that aren't a fun thing to do on wikis. The only way I know of is to put a <nowiki/> before the line-breaks and another one after. You can see I've done it on the page...for now. If it would be easier, I can create a template specifically to add a double line-break and nothing else, so something like {{Nslb|DF=1|RG=1}}. That's about the only other solution I can think of off-hand. Robin Hood  (talk) 00:45, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
A template might be the best thing, even though it won't be used much, as its a complicated thing when you need to get the spacing right. It seems like something that may have uses outside this template so a standalone one might be preferable. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 00:59, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
Okay, done. It allows alternate text for other namespaces, if desired, though spaces may be more trouble than they're worth (see the example)...you can just as easily put a space in front, then leave the optional text blank (e.g., "{{Nslb|DF=1|&#32;}}" vs. " {{Nslb|DF=1}}"). Robin Hood  (talk) 03:40, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

Webchat[edit]

Remind me, who set up webchat? It's definitely broken right now, and I believe it's a top of the page tab for all signed in users. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 21:21, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

That was Jak Atackka, as I recall. It's done in Javascript, which I have very little knowledge of. I'm pretty sure Dave's proficient in it, though. Robin Hood  (talk) 21:37, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

Pre-Release[edit]

Just a thought, does it need to transclude at all ever? If not could you do the necessary to stop this. The main culprits where it isn't needed are books, where it annihilates the formatting on the compilation pages and adds it several times (for each book). Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 16:04, 8 September 2016 (UTC)

Good thought, and what I've done should have fixed it. It fixes it in testing (see User:RobinHood70/Vav vs User:RobinHood70/Zain), but it's not doing a damned thing in reality, and I can't see why not. It might be some kind of bizarre caching issue or something. I'll write to Dave and give it another try later and see if I have better luck. Robin Hood  (talk) 18:50, 8 September 2016 (UTC)
Okay, got it. It's a problem on older versions of MediaWiki due to its internal template caching. Until we upgrade to 1.24 or later, we'll have to fudge things here and there. In probably 99.99% of cases, we'll just want to add a dummy variable to the Pre-Release tag that's on the compilation page itself. This will make sure that that one is seen as different from the others, so the results won't be cached. The subpages shouldn't need to be changed in any way, since the results should be the same for all of them: they shouldn't show. You can see what I've done on The Blackwater War page. It doesn't look like there are any others where that needs to be done currently, but if there are, just follow that example. Robin Hood  (talk) 20:09, 8 September 2016 (UTC)
So it's fixed when the wiki is upgraded and all we need to do is add the dummy variable until that happens. As always you find a way despite through the template jungle. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 19:58, 9 September 2016 (UTC)

Legends Card Template[edit]

(cross-posted from FB message, cuz I'll never find it there)

Could you make some edits to the Legends card template whenever you get a chance? There's a couple of us who are focusing on that namespace and we'd like to be able to update the cards a bit more. We've looked at it but aren't familiar enough with templates to make the edits.

Here's the edits we've decided on:

  • Add Unique (yes/no) (some cards have a "unique gem" on them that means you can only put 1 in a deck)
  • Add Subtype. We already have Type (action, item, support, and just whatever specific creature a card is): we think Creature should be one of those main types, and have Nord/Mudcrab/etc as a Subtype. (So instead of Ahnassi being the Khajiit type, she'd be a Creature type and a Khajiit subtype.)
  • Add Obtainable (yes/no) ("Yes" for cards that you can obtain in your collection; "No" for npc-only and only-summonable-from-another-card)

And probably categories too - so you could have, say, Legends-Cards-Willpower-Obtainable - when we do cardlists we'll probably want to distinguish between which ones you can and can't obtain. (from Alarra) Robin Hood  (talk) 05:41, 30 September 2016 (UTC)

Creating Templates[edit]

Would you happen to know anything about how to create templates? I currently want to create one (called Arena Place Summary) but I don't really know how to. I'm experienced with coding so are there any links to guides on coding or creating templates? Thank you in advance. AlphaAbsol (talk) 06:50, 30 September 2016 (UTC)

Edit: I've managed to figure this out on my own by locating the page on writing templates (which somehow I did not come across earlier) :P AlphaAbsol (talk) 12:05, 30 September 2016 (UTC)
Ours, or Wikipedia's? Both are good. You'll probably also want to take a look at String Functions and MetaTemplate. MetaTemplate is an extension to normal templates that one of our old admins designed. We use it fairly heavily around UESP. Robin Hood  (talk) 00:16, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the help! I was able to locate both ours and Wikipedia's, but I hadn't seen those other two articles. They're all really helpful, so thanks a ton :D AlphaAbsol (talk) 01:43, 1 October 2016 (UTC)

Page protection[edit]

You protected Skyrim talk:Form ID, and I think it only makes sense to protect Skyrim:Form ID. I understand the protection of pages to avoid the inclusion of rubbish in them, but by protecting talk pages new changes cannot be proposed and questions regarding the content of the article cannot be asked. (Which is what I intended to do.)

I am asking you because I believe you protected the talk page by mistake. --Sandbox (talk) 16:22, 29 October 2016 (UTC)

You're absolutely right! Thanks for spotting it and letting me know. I've fixed it now. Robin Hood  (talk) 17:48, 29 October 2016 (UTC)
Thank you very much. --Sandbox (talk) 17:49, 29 October 2016 (UTC)

Skyrim Factions[edit]

I was looking at a situation with Vald and ended up on the factions page, where I discovered what appears to be an oddity. Some of the enemy factions appear to have a neutral reaction (T03HatePlayerFaction, TG07 Vald Hates Player, TG08BMercerHatesPlayerFaction). At the same time some of the 'neutral' factions have an enemy combat reaction. These values do not match the cslist, but they do match the information added by Nephele. At the same time some Friend and Ally reactions appear swapped around too, eg ThalmorFaction, where all friends should be allies and all allies should be friends and the neutral should be enemy, according to the cslist. I come to you because your bot with Job #209 updated the pages to the faction template but kept the values and changed them to words (eg 0=Enemy), so I wondered if the bot had simply changed the information or checked the cs to confirm the values. The effect seems to be the same across all standard game factions, but DLC factions appear to match the cs. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 11:31, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

I see what you mean, but off-hand, I can't explain it. I'm reading directly from the game data and updating from there, but clearly, the values I'm getting don't match the ones in the CS. I'm not sure what's going on. I'll look into it more deeply tomorrow. Robin Hood  (talk) 03:43, 14 November 2016 (UTC)
It would be odd that the cslist is wrong for standard factions but correct for DLC factions, but of course the actual ingame status takes priority. What really made me look again was those neutral/enemy named factions having values different to their apparent use. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 18:46, 14 November 2016 (UTC)
Okay, so I've finally managed to look into this, and you're absolutely right: the Enemy/Neutral statuses are swapped, and the Friend/Ally statuses are swapped. It's been too long for me to be sure, but I suspect the problem came from the fact that the Faction page on the CK wiki has the entries in the same order I do in my program; our Faction page, however, differs. I'm going to assume for the moment that Nephele simply made the same mistake I did.
It hopefully won't take too long to get that fixed up, but it's been so long since I last ran the faction updater, I can't make any promises. Robin Hood  (talk) 21:19, 26 November 2016 (UTC)
I assume our faction page is wrong and needs changed then? I've yet to see a correct faction value (compared to the cs), including the ones over the last few days that have been updated, excluding of course the DLC ones which all seem to be perfect. A 'simple' swap would be in order in my opinion, though one that excluded the DLC factions from the swap. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 21:52, 26 November 2016 (UTC)
I'm not sure why the DLC ones are correct, but perhaps it was some coding change along the way or something. I'll get the bot to redo the changes with the correct values. Robin Hood  (talk) 21:58, 26 November 2016 (UTC)
Dragonborn's were verifiably wrong, so those are being updated now. I haven't looked at the Skyrim-space factions yet; I'll do them after dinner. Robin Hood  (talk) 00:14, 27 November 2016 (UTC)
And Skyrim space is done now as well. If you happen to be looking at them, you'll notice one or two sorting differences, since I made the sorting more consistent, and one or two incorrect "(dead)" links got updated. There was also a duplicate group between two pages at one point, so the incorrect one was removed. Robin Hood  (talk) 05:39, 27 November 2016 (UTC)

Fixed problem with a bot edit[edit]

Hey, I fixed a problem caused by your bot at [1]. The Template:ESO Ultimate Link template (and similar ones for Health, Magicka, and Stamina) does not work when the word "Ultimate" is in all caps such as that page. Just letting you know so that you can update the bot to not do that again. — TheRealLurlock (talk) 19:40, 19 November 2016 (UTC)

Yeah, someone already brought that up on the bot page. In theory, I fixed that yesterday, but I haven't tested it yet. Thanks for letting me know, though! Better two people tell me than none. :) Robin Hood  (talk) 20:03, 19 November 2016 (UTC)
Had another one on Online:Recipe Quality. This is now the second time it has removed the color coding from the middle two entries. — TheRealLurlock (talk) 03:14, 20 November 2016 (UTC)
Fixed for the next run. The problem here is that it doesn't make any kind of difference-based changes, which would be a nightmare, it just gets the data from Dave's database, does some global replacements to add links and templates that people have added, then clobbers the existing template with what it's generated. It previously only checked for links that it might be clobbering; I've now added some template checking in there as well, so instances like this should be minimal to non-existent in the future. Skyrim Creature Attacks?[edit]

Hey Robin, I'm really new to editing on this site and can't figure out the best way to show a creature's attack damage in the table. One page I've edited, Dragonborn:Bristleback, tells about how the Bristleback can do 25-62 points of unarmed damage. Though this is true, it does not account for the in-betweens: it actually does four different amounts of damage (25, 37, 50, and 62). Also, values greater than 25 damage are through power attacks, which I'm not sure how to specify. The Ash Guardian's unarmed attacks also do an additional 25 point of fire damage on top of the 30-45 points of physical and it's 40 point flame explosion also does 45 point of physical damage. I'm not certain how to include those. On top of all this, both creature miss a category within their tables (the bristleback has no abilities and the ash guardian has no drops). Should those be bulleted as "None"? If you have any feedback on how I'm doing, that'd be great, too. Siegfried of Skyrim (talk) 22:01, 19 November 2016 (UTC)

Hi Siegfried, sorry for the delay, but I've had a lot of things on the go lately. I'd actually suggest that you ask this on our Project:Community Portal, as I haven't really done a lot of work on our pages lately outside of bot editing and minor corrections, so I'm not sure if we have a standard way to display this sort of info or not. As for your work, I've definitely noticed you've been busy...hard not to. :) I think the best suggestion I have for you is to watch if things get corrected after you've edited, and learn from whatever the more experienced editors do. Lore links outside of lorespace[edit]

Hey! I saw the maintenance cat and wanted to add my reasoning for lorelinks outside of lore space, since many of the ones added were probably by me. Since ESO is an ever growing game, new NPCs and locations and factions are always being added. I've used the lore link on these sorts of names in the online namespace because while the name may not warrant an article now, it is certainly possible it will in the future. Rather than put a needless red link to a page that doesn't current warrant creation or have to go back and look through hundreds of pages or more to link them when they do get added, I use lorelink, since that will suppress the red link now, but if the page is ever created in the future, the link already exists. Hopefully that all makes sense and there aren't too many typos (I'm on my phone :P). Jeancey (talk) 02:33, 27 November 2016 (UTC)

Yeah, it occurred to me that that might be a good reason to use Lore Link outside of Lore space after I added it. Ideally, I'd like to be able to cut down on the needless Lore Links that have been added erroneously, but of course there's no way of distinguishing those from genuine Lore Links added for reasons like yours, or things like books that may later be transferred to Lore. Perhaps the best "solution", if one is even necessary, is to just leave the tag there and let humans decide if anything needs to be done about it or if they're legitimate uses. Alternatively, we can just scrap the idea altogether...it's not like it's a huge drain on the server, but it's a big enough drain, due to the page existence checks, that I think we should get rid of them where there's no compelling reason to use them. Robin Hood  (talk) 02:40, 27 November 2016 (UTC)
The categories seem to be transcluding when lore links are used in the description part. See SR:Landmarks, with Dunmeth Pass and Druadach Mountains. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 19:01, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
It was a nice idea while it lasted, but obviously there are just too many special cases for this to be useful. I've removed the extra category from the template and I'll delete the category page once it's empty. Robin Hood  (talk) 05:23, 5 December 2016 (UTC)
I'm not wholly against it, as I managed one edit directly from the category highlighting it, but I think the template is too useful mainly for the reason Jeancey highlighted. Perhaps an alternate name to use outside lore, which would have all pages using it listed directly with the 'what links here' function. We could also have them categorised as non-priority fixes, like changing ON to Online or Image to File, that should not be 'fixed' unless otherwise editing the page. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 18:37, 5 December 2016 (UTC)
If you think it's actually useful, I could re-instate the change, with either a parameter to specify that the Lore Link is deliberate, or perhaps a separate template for deliberate uses outside Lore (either a redirect or a minimal variant of the same template) as you suggest. Maybe "Future Link"? There's at least one benefit to having a separate template, which is that a simple bot job could be set up to see if a link has been created and then change Future Link calls to direct links, without having to go through every single Lore Link on the wiki. Robin Hood  (talk) 21:55, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
I think the 'separate' template would be better, and easier managed. Its a simple redirect to set it up, and probably just get the bot to change all uses outside lore to use it. A category to put in the Needs Maintenance would be handy, but how to get that to just include those pages is something I'll leave to you. I struggled to think of a name, but Future Link seems perfect. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 23:07, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

() Okay, I did it as a separate template altogether, rather than a redirect, since there are slight variations in approach that we'll probably want. This way, the category can be added back to Lore Link without affecting Future Link, or vice versa if we want something along those lines later.

As a first step, I'll set up a one-off bot job sometime in the next couple of days to convert existing Lore Links outside Lore space into Future Links or regular links (example), but only if they're straight-forward (i.e., no NSlink/NSdisplay parameters) and the page isn't transcluded outside the local/parent namespace. I figure if the Lore Link does do something along those lines, it should probably be looked at by a human. Similarly, I'll have it skip over pages with a Book Summary template on them, since those are probably deliberate Lore Links...the assumption being that the book could later be moved to Lore space. Any other similar pages you can think of that might legitimately use Lore Links outside Lore space?

Once all that's done, I'll set up a recurring job to occasionally convert any Future Links that now point to local/parent pages into regular links. Obviously, if the pages exist, they're no longer "future" links.

Does that all sound good? Robin Hood  (talk) 23:02, 8 December 2016 (UTC)
