Crawling Critters

A few days after helping Legate Precilius Varro with his interrogation of Bjarni Shatter-Stone in A Stormcloak in Chains, a courier will approach you and deliver a note from the legate, requesting your assistance in ridding the fort of a critter infestation. Once you arrive at the fort, the legate explains the military outpost is built upon a much older Akaviri structure and that a while back a tunnel was excavated linking the two. He now wants it closed to avoid any infiltration of the fort, but needs your help in dispatching the spiders that have made their lair there. He hands over the key to the substructure and wishes you good luck.

Sweeping the Substructure

The entrance to the substructure is via a trapdoor hidden under some hay in the prison. After a long, illuminated tunnel you will arrive at a wooden door. Past this are the ruins of the Akaviri fort: head down the winding stairs into the tower and head southeast into a large room with two spiders. Cross the rickety plank bridge to the southern side of the chamber and head up the tower stairs, battling past another two spiders. You will then arrive at the bottom of a collapsed tower. On the lower level are two more spiders, while on the upper is another critter as well as the source of the infestation: the Broodmother, a giant spider.

Once you have dispatched her, return back to the legate to collect your reward of a random enchanted weapon and a leveled amount of gold:

Notes

• On the southern side of the Broodmother's tower is a mysterious Akaviri fire, burning white. Inspecting it will prompt a message that the flames "hunger to touch an item forged of ancient metal". If you are in possession of the blade Hvitbrand, you will be able to temper it in the flames, improving its enchantment and value.
