A bit of info

Here is a bit more info on the DB http://n4g.com/news/882268/elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-why-you-should-avoid-joining-the-dark-brotherhood RIM 21:00, 9 November 2011 (UTC)

Here's some new information. I killed a few random people, never went to Riften, and I have a Dark Brotherhood recruitment letter. Seems like the recruitment method remains the same. 184.9.219.48 03:44, 12 November 2011 (UTC)
Not sure. I've killed many random people - pretty much anyone I find on the roads - and did not receive a recruitment letter until completing the appropriate quest. Joining requires you to complete a second quest that "repays the stolen kill," which can only mean the "Innocence Lost..." quest. Baron 04:02, 12 November 2011 (UTC)
I think it may just be a random bug, because the game is now refusing to let me into the Dark Brotherhood sanctuary without everyone trying to kill me. 184.9.219.48 04:40, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

Destroying the Brotherhood

Why is the section on Destroying the Brotherhood being removed? It is a legitimate part of the game, and a path you can take if you choose to. I see no reason why the option should not be listed. Baron 22:32, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

Could be linked, but it does warrant it's own page.Zydrate 18:14, 14 November 2011 (UTC)

Ranks?

I noticed no faction has any rank structure. Did Skyrim get rid of it?? — Unsigned comment by 66.183.243.160 (talk) at 22:55 on 12 November 2011

Yes. Skyrim no longer has ranks in factions. Baron 01:11, 13 November 2011 (UTC)
Makes sense, considering you're (spoiler) basically the "Listener" by the second quest. Zydrate 17:59, 14 November 2011 (UTC)

What are these quests?

I've completed all the Dark Brotherhood story quests, but I see now that there is Sanctuary and Delayed Burial. What are these? I didn't come across them in game. Baron 06:51, 14 November 2011 (UTC)

Delayed Burial is a quest even before the Innocence Lost quest, where it is possible to help Cicero fix the wheel. It can be missed, depending on your choices - at least I think so. Sanctuary is a simple, small quest where you just have to speak to Nazir and receive some contracts. This seems like it should be in your journal and should appear right after With Friends Like These... If you have the saves, it would be great if you could check it out. --Krusty 13:36, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
You're correct, I have Sanctuary completed and that is what it was - picking up your first contracts from Nazir. Delayed Burial is nowhere to be found, however. Is it an alternate path to find the Dark Brotherhood? I thought it was odd that in order to get Destroy the Dark Brotherhood! you had to first murder someone innocent. Seems to go against the morals of someone who would want to do such a thing, but this Delayed Burial may be an explanation. Baron 15:58, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
Just tested it. You need to encounter Cicero and his wagon north of Whiterun before doing anything else - and agree to help him fix the wheel. --Krusty 16:11, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
And what does this do? Does it open up a chance to join the Dark Brotherhood, or is it just a flavor quest? Cicero plays a large role in the Dark Brotherhood quests, and according to other sources doing this quest can result in his death, which makes me wonder how doing this quest affects the DB quests. Baron 16:50, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
It appears the be a flavor quest, an introduction to Cicerus of sorts, but I will have to complete the quest to be sure - I missed it the first time too and right now, I'm busy with the last quest for the Companions. Watch these pages. :) --Krusty 17:54, 14 November 2011 (UTC)

Uhh, Karma?

Skyrim has no Karma system. So remove? --Cyblackeagle22 23:31, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

There is certainly something that determines whether or not people are targeted by the Brotherhood. Perhaps karma is the wrong word, but there must be something. Baron 05:41, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
There is NO Karma in Skyrim. I don't know how the game keep track of this, but so far I've been only targeted by thugs, assassins and the like, but never a Dark Brotherhood assassin. — Unsigned comment by 187.67.227.156 (talk) at 04:05 on 23 November 2011
There is a Fame global that might be used by the game. But I've removed the line since no one has confirmed whether you truly will attacked. --Timenn-<talk> 13:19, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
I can verify the possibility of being attacked by the Brotherhood. Jayden Matthews 15:43, 24 November 2011 (UTC)
I'm constantly being targeted by "assassins" that have letters on them signed by Astrid quite clearly stating that the Dark Brotherhood has been contracted to kill me. — Unsigned comment by 75.71.114.55 (talk) at 19:33 on 30 November 2011
Also, there IS, in fact, a system in place that measures what you do. It's part of the Radiant system that keeps track of how certain people react to you or the things you've done. — Unsigned comment by 75.71.114.55 (talk) at 22:01 on 30 November 2011

() Agreed. I periodically get either assassins or hired thugs after me. It's not that the dark brotherhood themselves have it in for me, it's that I've annoyed someone enough to take out a contract. 70.176.10.9 05:06, 27 January 2012 (UTC)

Concerning the Dark Brotherhood, I am unable to tell if there is a specific NPC that wants you dead, or if it is just an event that is triggered once you progress enough through the game.
With concern to the hired thugs, however, the letter given to them is addressed from the NPC you've pissed off. In my case, Alvor was not happy with me for stealing a few of his iron bars. Rhoan 21:33, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

My chest is gone

My chest got buried under a pile of rubble in the old DBH sanctuary, is there any way I can access it to get my enormous amount of items back? 75.227.243.44 15:08, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

Nope. Sorry about that. If you do play on the PC, then you may use the console, but certain customized items may not be fully recoverable. --Shm0key 18:25, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

Astrid tried to assassinate me

I was wandering around (long after finishing the DB questline) and I was attacked by an 'assassin'. After killing him I found a note on his corpse saying basically this:

"[name] is to be killed by any means possible.

-Astrid"

any ideas as to why this might be? - max — Unsigned comment by 98.220.202.48 (talk) at 22:19 on 24 November 2011

That's happened to me to.They already got paid for the job and failure is not an option.I'm not sure why that's triggered but I'm trying to find outTheThing12 15:26, 25 November 2011 (UTC)
yeah i figure it was from earlier before the end of the DB questline and he never found me lol. -max — Unsigned comment by 98.220.202.48 (talk) at 23:19 on 27 November 2011 (UTC)
If you stole something from Astrid during the questline when she was alive, they may send hired thugs after you. All NPCs may do this instead of reporting a crime.--Shm0key 18:29, 28 November 2011 (UTC)
I think this is like the Talos company from Fallout 3, where if your karma is high(good) you get a hit out on you from evil people. I believe this because I haven't gotten any bounty, haven't started anything for the DB and yet had an assassin come after me.--Dro'Bakha 07:31, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
Yes, they do hire thugs, but even if you do not steal from Astrid, the notes you find loosely state "Someone has performed the Dark Covenant, kill [player-name] by any means necessary, also, theft results in only "thugs" being hired, not assassins" Also, Astrid herself isn't trying to kill anyone, the Dark Brotherhood is, and she signs the contract to make it "official" — Unsigned comment by 75.71.114.55 (talk) at 22:00 on 30 November 2011

() I was attacked by the Dark Brotherhood too. I also noticed the dark sacrament in Maven Black-Briar's basement! Kimi the Elf 13:34, 26 December 2011 (UTC)

I have also had an attempt made on my life. It was on the road to Kynesgrove with Delphine during the "A Blade In The Dark" quest. I hadn't even started the DB quest line or gone anywhere near it yet. The note was named "Dark Brotherhood Assassin's Note" and read, verbatim:
"As instructed, you are to eliminate <name> by any means necessary. The Black Sacrament has been performed - somebody wants this fool dead.
We've already received payment for the contract. Failure is not an option.
-Astrid"
Not sure if it matters, but the assassin was a Dunmer just crouching in the middle of the road during broad daylight. None of our stories are adding up right now, haha. I'm not sure what I could have done to bring this on. I haven't killed anyone, stolen from anybody, or done anything remotely bad (or even good, really). HOWEVER! I had JUST reached level 20 and gotten an invite to that Mythic Dawn museum for the Mehrunes Razor quest not even 15 minutes (real time) before in Riverwood. Perhaps it's tied to the player's level? --Zmedaris 12:33, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
I'm still on the road to Kynesgrove, and another assassin just tried to kill me... lmao. It's interesting to note that each new assassin's note does not stack with the previous ones. I'm definitely investigating this once I finish the quest with Delphine. --Zmedaris 12:54, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
You will be attacked by assassins before you join the DB. As far as I'm aware, joining the Brotherhood will keep any assassins from attacking you again. I can confirm it's not Astrid trying to kill you. It's some other NPC that has taken a contract out on you. I don't know if it's caused by an action you did (such as stealing from someone can cause them to send thugs after you), or if it's completely random, or caused my another action you perform, though — Unsigned comment by 71.28.1.34 (talk) at 01:45 on 11 January 2012
It has something to do wit being dragon born :) it only happens after u find out u r — Unsigned comment by 166.249.101.99 (talk) at 16:35 on 28 January 2012
Not true wrt Dragonborn. There's an LPer named Zisteau; in Ep. 4, immediately after exiting Bleak Falls Barrow and before absorbing a dragon soul, he's attacked by a dark brotherhood assassin. Unless Rolaf or the Riverwood shopkeeper took out a hit on him, I think it's random. --70.15.23.57 05:34, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

() Before joining the Dark Brotherhood I used to get attacked occasionally by DB assassins, who carried a note saying that someone had taken out a contract against the Dragonborn. I recently discovered the Black Sacrament room in Maven's house, and read her note to Astrid. There isn't any hard evidence to back up my theory, but taken with the other notes (looted from the assassins) it seems to hint that Maven might be the one who is trying to have the Dragonborn assassinated. It seems that this is never addressed (irritatingly), so I am just speculating. I'd be interested to hear other theories/points of view.--username12345 23:11, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

Innocence Lost bug

i killed grelod the kind but it still wants me to kill her — Unsigned comment by 91.154.254.145 (talk) at 12:11 on 25 November 2011 another bug is: when you kill Grelod the Kind she may appear to be "Sucked into the ground" then appear dead where the orphans sleep.

300 gold bounty

In a previous playthrough, I got a 300 gold bounty of some sort, to be paid to Nazir. Nazir confronted me about this when talking to him after entering the Dawnstar sanctuary through the secret entrance, without being specific about what exactly I did wrong. Does anyone have any idea what could have caused this? --188.203.162.222 17:32, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

Have you fed on anyone in the sanctuary? Andil the mage 17:34, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
Nope. I don't know that I've done anything that could be considered a crime under any circumstances, whether by the Dark Brotherhood or any other place or faction in the game. --188.203.162.222 17:40, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

The Dark Brotherhood Forever bug

I started doing the recurring DBF quests after the Dark Brotherhood questline, and the last contract I received from the Night Mother put the quest marker on my map on the Dawnstar Sanctuary. Once I get inside, it sends me out the secret entrance to Skyrim and puts the marker back on the Sanctuary. So basically it's telling me to enter the Sanctuary, once I go into the Sanctuary the marker is placed on the door and it continues to loop like this. Does anyone have any idea what's wrong?

Killing the emperor with poisoned soup bug desktop crash

Well after being chased by the imperials right after i killed the double of the emperor, when i go back to the sanctuary i have to look for survivor. I found out that Nazir is the only left and help him being safe from a guard. Right after when we start to move along and run for our lives before burning alive... You guessed it, we open the door, the night mother start talking to me and then my game crash...

It did this like 20times i thought it could be a little crash bug like i get sometime but normally when i reload it doesnt crash again... Did it happened to someone else and how can i continue on the trail i want to finish my dark brotherhood — Unsigned comment by 24.200.171.86 (talk) at 19:20 on 30 November 2011

Did it crash out of the game, or did it just "turn black and stay that way" If it turned black, you have to wait quite a while as you are being "dug" out and it may seem like it's frozen. — Unsigned comment by 75.71.114.55 (talk) at 20:19 on 30 November 2011
The contact won't speak to me, what do I do? — Unsigned comment by 86.135.70.221 (talk) at 19:35 on 1 December 2011

Just sleep/wait (your character, not you). Set it to 8 hours, when your character wakes up the night mother starts talking. You personally wont have to wait for five minutes this way. — Unsigned comment by 60.226.59.17 (talk) at 13:31 on 4 December 2011

The time it takes to get the letter

Hello people, Could anyone verify that it takes 40 days for the curier to arrive? I fast traveled to Windrun the same instance i finished the quest, waited there for 40 days (took me atleast 20mins) and then traveled back. After standing there for an additional two minutes the currier came. PLEASE VERIFY THIS FOR ME!! Petomatick 14:12, 3 December 2011 (UTC)Petar Nov.

I've never had to wait 40 days to get the letter. Usually comes much, much faster than that (2-3 days). Baron 02:38, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
It usually happens within 24 hours (in-game) I can't imagine why you would think you had to wait 40 days. — Unsigned comment by 99.122.68.154 (talk) at 08:09 on 1 March 2012

With Friends Like These...

The article says you have to sleep at an inn to be taken to the cabin, but it happened to me when I slept in a bedroll in a Dwemer ruin (the one from the Mage's College quests). Was that a glitch on my end, or a typo on the article's? — Unsigned comment by 152.23.213.61 (talk) at 06:18 on 7 December 2011

CTD when entering The Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary in Dawnstar

After killing the target for the final contract from Nazir, the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary will crash to desktop when entering. If I do not kill the target, the Brotherhood Sanctuary is still accessible. — Unsigned comment by Ellwood (talkcontribs) at 04:35 on 12 December 2011

This happend to me after several of the Dark Brotherhood Quests. At first it helped if I placed myself into Riften (coc RiftenOrigin), then directly into the sanctuary (coc DarkBrotherhood). But this didn't work the last time and I haven't found another way in since... --NeoDobby 22:25, 25 December 2011 (UTC)

Seeing text that isn't there

In chapter about joining the Dark Brotherhood I see following incorrect text: "You must sleep at the inn at Riverwood." But when I go edit mode only then I see more correct text: "You must sleep at an inn."

I wonder why this happens. Also I am pretty sure that I slep in owned house, not inn when I got the visit. — Unsigned comment by 109.204.132.235 (talk) at 20:04 on 12 December 2011

Reason for a contract on my head

I had a Dark Brotherhood assassin come after me specifically after I murdered the stable master of Whiterun, Skulvar Sable-Hilt. I did it via sneak attack and was not seen, but the man's son, Jervar, must have sought revenge anyway. The note I found on the assassin read, "Here's the sum we agreed upon. I trust that you will make [me] pay for killing my dear Skulvar Sable-Hilt. Return to me with proof of the deed. If you run afoul of the law, I will pay your bounty.--Jervar" -- Rip Purr, Xbox 360 — Unsigned comment by 110.32.139.26 (talk) at 09:45 on 15 December 2011

Astrid's Mask

Does the female shrouded cowl have a mask, does astrid have a unique-ish cowl, or is the mask a seperate item? — Unsigned comment by 75.9.221.181 (talk) at 02:58 on 21 December 2011

She doesn't wear a mask. — Unsigned comment by 50.33.47.99 (talk) at 02:15 on 26 December 2011
In the abandonded shack Astrid wears a hood similar to the one found in Hag's End (assassin of old).
However, when you equip the item your mouth and nose will not be scarfed (possible bug, confirmed for nord male). — Unsigned comment by 87.72.86.4 (talk) at 22:51 on 28 December 2011
I didn't kill Astrid however the shrouded mask that I was given during the quest has a red mask covering my mouth and there is one on a shelf in the sanctuary that has just the hood without the mask. If males don't have this I would assume its a bug. Kimi the Elf 12:52, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
I tested it with both female and male now. Works with females, not males (only tested with nord race). — Unsigned comment by 87.72.86.4 (talk) at 14:41 on 6 January 2012
Same for dunmer males, as the male assassin recruit doesn't wear one either, i would say its a bug, or deliberate by bethesda (Eddie The Head 14:44, 6 January 2012 (UTC))

() I think that they arem meant to have masks because their is a maskless version I found. Either way, neither version gives my Khajiit a mask. Which saddens me.69.161.247.165 20:47, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

i cant say about Argonian girls but with the males it dose not matter which hood i wear i get no mask but the one from the old assassin allows me to wear a helmet wit itFroggy™ 18:26, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
This is because male's beard code, even if you don't have a beard, will cause the mask to disappear. Since females don't have beards, they get the mask.--Grim765 03:38, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

Well someone with a better graphics card could take a picture of the stone tablet on which are the 5 tenets and post it. I think it would add to the page in terms of the culture that is harbored by the DB. the black hand within the red circle is on the banners and the stone tablet. It's not simply a black hand but The Hand of Darkness in a pool of blood...which is representative of the Dark Brotherhood being the center of blood shed.--Theindividual 08:54, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

Skyrim crashing when entering dawnstar sanctuary? (SPOILER)

So this was previously touched on just once but no other comments were revealed so I will retouch. While doing a random thieves guild bedlam job I went into maven black briar as I have mostly cleaned out riften. While there I snuck into the middle master locked room in the basement and saw the standard layout for the black sacrament along with a note that basically states you have been paid and are taking too long so hurry up. This letter is addressed to astrid but the note trigger no quest and even talking to maven there are no dialogues to use about the letter. While snooping around for more clues I did find a couple I letters in the dresser in the big room on the top floor which suggests a couple names that maven is unhappy with.

Do these seperate letters have a common thread? Is there even a quest for this or am I looking too deep? Was there a quest I did for maven during the dark brotherhood quests that already fulfilled the contract? — Unsigned comment by 24.251.158.158 (talk) at 14:25 on 2 July 2012

No more door after finishing Hail Sithis! quest.

So I just killed the Emperor, killed Amaund Motierre as well, got the reward, but as I go to return to the new Dawnstar Sanctuary there is no door, just what looks to be a bunch of stones that make up some what of a door. I can fast travel to the Dawnstar Sanctuary, but when I get there, there's no door! HELP PLEASE!!!! — Unsigned comment by 131.191.15.85 (talk) at 12:00 on 6 July 2012

Access to one word of Marked for Death - Not really an advantage to joining...

Might want to note that if you opt to destroy the dark brotherhood instead of joining, you still have access to the word wall during Destroy the Dark Brotherhood!. Bootstomp 04:03, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

Kidnapping quest bug

Finished Innocence Lost. Received the "WE KNOW" letter from a courier. Have slept in dozens of beds in over a dozen different places since then, never been kidnapped. Not sure if Delphine's introduction as a Blade quest overlapped and interfered with the script. Woke up in the Sleeping Giant inn all dazed and groggy (not seen that before) and thought I was about to see Astrid, but Delphine was standing there saying Follow me instead.(down through her secret door basement).

Is there any way to reset the sleeping/kidnapping script? — Unsigned comment by 68.229.185.127 (talk) at 23:20 on 21 October 2012‎

Spider in the sanctuary

There is a small spider inside the sanctuary near the enchanter. If you try to kill it, maybe it's a pet, with a shout everyone comes and attacks you even if you don't have a weapon drawn. It happened to me after picking up the second set of contracts. I don't know if they will attack if you kill with other methods or not. I didn't think about testing it at the time and have now moved on to other things and don't recall what autosave it was. I added a comment in the note section of the article, it might be helpful to find out if they will attack you if you kill it other ways, or if the shout was the thing that triggered it.--50.54.255.200 22:55, 28 January 2013 (GMT)

Lis is a dear pet of the nice people who live here. Attack it, they attack you. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 22:57, 28 January 2013 (GMT)

Marked for death last word (SPOILER)

So I Finished the Dark Brotherhood quest line which destroyed the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary. A little While after this I found out the last word for the shout Marked for death was in the DB Sanctuary the whole time and I never saw it. So I went back into the DB sanctuary to try and learn the word and It was still there but I can't learn it, the word still glows blue but it fissiles out and i don't learn it. Is this the game telling me i'm an idiot for not seeing the word on the wall before completing the storyline or is there another way for me to get the last word?? — Unsigned comment by 24.231.200.27 (talk)

Yeah sometimes bugs can be a pain, check Marked for Death to see if it has any info. Lord Eydvar Talk|Contribs 08:42, 24 February 2013 (GMT)
