Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

Fasele, a breton slave from Guls manor, is really worried about her master's personality shift

Enter the Guls Manor in Akamora, and the first person you meet will be a worried breton slave Fasele who will tell that her master, Ainab Guls has been acting very strangely recently. He constantly insults her and belittles her every effort, making her life almost unbearable. She will beg for help as she failed to understand what caused the change herself. The only fact she knows is that the change happened after a mysterious dunmer trader in brown shirt has visited Ainab. Just as the dunmer left, Ainab is no longer the same. She suggests to either talk with her master about the matter, or try to find said dunmer trader.

Unfortunately Fasele doesn't know where to find the dunmer trader, as apparently she isn't allowed to leave the manor. So it seems easier to start by asking Ainab first. However, it appears to be not so easy, as Ainab reacts very aggresively to anyone. I have no time for outlanders like yourself, - he says, - what with your bad manners, degraded culture and terrible hygiene standards. Why don't you do me a favor and leave? Better yet, why not do the whole world a favor and throw yourself off a cliff? Akamora has some nice ones that would suit one such as yourself. Any attempt to calm him down and raise his disposition with a nice chat will fail, and asking him about the dunmer trader will lead to nowhere, as he bluntly responds just Nothing that I'll talk to you about, guar-brain

Ask any person in town about the trader, and they will suggest you to talk with any local trader, as they tend to know everybody new who comes down here. Proceed down the street from Guls Manor and enter the Underground Bazaar. There are multiple traders, but only Roshaga gra-Horg will have information we need. She will say Vares was the name he had, I believe. He wasn't from Akamora, so it's likely he would be staying in the Laughing Goblin

Now as we have the name and target location, leave the Bazaar and go directly to the Laughing Goblin inn. It's located just near the Bazaar, with the door on the opposite side of the street. Ask Liuba Onamas, the publician of the inn, or any patron in the main hall, and they will respond Sounds like you are looking for Reram Vares. He's visiting from the north and is staying here in the Laughing Goblin inn for a few days. Look around, and you'll quickly find the dunmer matching the description, Reram Vares, chilling just not far from the bar.

Reram Vares is the member of House Telvanni, and will react accordingly if you belong to the same Great House. Confront him, and ask about Ainab Guls, but, oddly enough, he says that he doesn't know the name. Continue asking, saying that you don't believe his words, and he will admit that he paid him a visit. Alright, I know him. But I did nothing to the treacherous rat. If I did do something, he would deserve it, though. I didn't do anything, though. Since Ainab once was also a member of House Telvanni, as revealed later, this seem to be some kind of a revenge from the faction rather than personal conflict. Continue asking, in a very convincing way, saying How much do you like your fingers?, and he responds: Ok, fine. I gave him a cursed amulet. If he keeps it near him, it will erode his personality. Say, how about we do a deal on this? If you keep quiet about this, I'll make sure that some of my friends in Port Telvannis cut you some good deals. What do you say?

Sounds rather tempting, and this is one of the possible ways to solve the quest (quite a selfish one), but the poor slave Fasele will suffer till the end of life. A more humanistic approach will be to return back to Guls Manor, and look for Clothing#Unusual Amulet#Unusual Amulet. Once you find it, leave the manor and your journal will be updated. Go back, and talk with Fasele about her master again. She will be happy that his personality is now restored, and although she doesn't have any way to thank you for your efforts, a good friend of Ainab Guls, Dulis Llendu, may have a reward if you tell her about the case.

You may find Dulis Llendu just outside, not far from the Guls manor, if you turn left and go upstairs upon leaving the manor. She will thank you and reward with 200 gold.

Notes[edit]

  • There's no key from Fasele's slave bracers, so it's impossible to free her. Moreover, if you attack her master, she will fight you till death defending him, so she seem to be very attached to Ainab. If you ask her about Background topic, she responds I don't mind being a slave, really. If I was free I would never be able to live in as nice a house as this. My daily tasks are never anything exceedingly difficult, just a little cooking and cleaning
  • If you talk with Ainab after the quest is completed, he will gladly share his personal story with you if you choose Background topic, and reveal the nature of conflict with the House Telvanni. He will say I was born in the northern town of Ranyon-ruhn and became a sorcerer in the service of House Telvanni. However, I soon realized it was not the right path for me. I'd been raised as a Temple follower, and I couldn't reconcile my religious beliefs with being a Telvanni. After leaving the House, I decided to move south where people are more tolerable
