The Meridian Sword
by Ignatius Callidus, Professor of Daedrology at the University of Gwylim

Everyone has heard of the Dawnbreaker, the fabled sword blessed by Meridia herself, and the legendary power it has. What most don't know is that there used to be many similar weapons, imbued with Meridia's power to a much lesser extent than the Dawnbreaker but still quite deadly against the undead and their ilk. During the height of the culture of the Daedra-worshipping Ayleids, many such weapons were crafted in the forges of cities which worshipped Meridia, such as Delodiil or Garlas Malatar. In the latter case, one specific example was mentioned by Tjurhane Fyrre in his works about the fall of the city. The Ayleid sage mentions a "two-handed sword shining as if made of gold, disintegrating undead with a single swing, made hundreds of years before the reign of King Narilmor but ultimately lost when a member of Umaril the Unfeathered's army who wielded it was killed in battle against the Alessians". The sword was indeed lost when Garlas Malatar fell to the Alessian Order, but mentions of it resurfaced hundreds of years later, after the demise of the Order made Daedra worshippers in the First Empire bold enough to admit their existence. Records from interrogations of the cultists caught during many Imperial raids, available at the Imperial Library, prove that the sword ultimately ended up in the hands of the Meridian cult, which decided to break it up in three pieces and have a different cult cell guard each of the pieces. Thanks to years of extensive research in libraries and of tracking down descendants of the cultists, I have been able to determine the locations where the parts of the sword should be kept:
- The hilt was taken to a Meridian temple beneath the mountain of Eton Nir, on the main island of the Summerset archipelago;
- The pommel ended up in a Meridian shrine in the Tenmar Forest, in Elsweyr's southern region of Pellitine;
- The blade is kept in a Meridian temple on the slopes of Mount Kilkreath, in the region of Haafingar in western Skyrim.
Once all the parts are retrieved, the sword would have to be reforged to be usable again - and I'm sure that can only happen at the forge where it was first created, somewhere in the dark depths of Garlas Malatar.
I am going to petition the university for funds needed to assemble expeditions to these locations. Certainly such opportunity can't be missed, and when I reassemble the Meridian sword and bring it to the university's museum, the Gwylim Prize shall be mine!
