Kagrenac's Tools are the legendary artifacts crafted by the Dwemer Tonal Architect Lord Kagrenac. The tools, Keening, Sunder, and Wraithguard, were created to tap into the power of the Heart of Lorkhan. The artifacts were seemingly misused by the Dwemer, leading to the race's disappearance. All three artifacts came into the possession of the Almsivi following the Battle of Red Mountain and were used by the Tribunal to make themselves into living gods. In 2E 882, Dagoth Ur awakened and then ambushed and nearly killed the Tribunal during their annual pilgrimage to Red Mountain to renew their divine powers. The event resulted in the Tribunal being cut off from access to the Heart of Lorkhan. The Tribunal then launched intermittent campaigns to assault Red Mountain to force access to the Heart Chamber, and Keening and Sunder were lost during a campaign in 3E 417. In 3E 427 the Nerevarine retrieved all three artifacts and during their final battle with Dagoth Ur, all three were used to destroy the enchantments on the Heart of Lorkhan. In 4E 201, the Dragonborn retrieved all three artifacts, although their enchantments that kills the wielder seemed to had faded.
Each tool had a specific purpose in helping gain power from the Heart. Without Wraithguard, it is dangerous to wield the weapons, often leading to the instant death of the wielder. Stories say that Sotha Sil created his own versions of the tools to control, shape, or dismantle his own variant of the Heart of Lorkhan, The Mechanical Heart. Sotha Sil hid his tools as a precaution across Nirn to prevent people from stealing the Heart's power. The location was lost after his demise—though some tales describe a Forgotten Hero reclaiming them.
Sunder, a hammer, was used to produce a specific amount and quality of power from the Heart. When struck by Sunder, the Heart would release godlike power. Circa 2E 582, Sunder had seemingly been shattered into several pieces and had left Almsivi's possession, although it would eventually be returned. After being taken from the Almsivi, Sunder was brought to the citadel of Vemynal by Dagoth Vemyn, an Ash Vampire. It was recovered by the Nerevarine in 3E 427.
In 4E 5, smugglers attempted to smuggle Sunder and Wraithguard into Skyrim using the refugees fleeing the effects of the Red Year as cover. Once out of Morrowind, Dwemer automatons began attacking the caravan, as a result of a fail-safe system implemented by Kagrenac to prevent his Tools from ever leaving Morrowind. The Dwemer created a Tamriel-wide network of drones which would track down and retrieve the Tools if they were taken out of Morrowind, and would then deposit them in a vault until a Tonal Architect could come and retrieve them. Seeking to put a stop to the attacks, some of the caravan captains betrayed their employers and handed Sunder and Wraithguard over to the drones. A caravan member known as Velyne learned of this, and managed to track the items in the snowy wastes southwest of Winterhold, to a vault located in Sightless Pit. She died before an expedition could ever be organized to find her. 4E 201, The Dragonborn traveled to the Sightless Pit. There, they battled the vault's guardian, a Dwemer centurion which appeared to be made out of an ebony metal, and retrieved Sunder and Wraith Guard.
Keening, a short blade, was used to flay and focus the power that Sunder produced. After being taken from the Almsivi, the blade was brought to the citadel of Odrosal by Dagoth Odros, an Ash Vampire. It was recovered by the Nerevarine in 3E 427.
In 4E 201, the mage Arniel Gane requested the delivery of it to Skyrim for research. By this time, the blade was no longer dangerous to wield without Wraithguard. Keening was briefly lost along the way when the courier died. Arniel used the blade on a warped soul gem to reproduce the events which led to the disappearance of the Dwemer; unfortunately, the experiment was a success, and Arniel vanished. The blade then passed into the possession of the Last Dragonborn, who had aided Arniel in his endeavor.
Wraithguard, a gauntlet, stopped the fatal effects of the other tools on the wielder. While accounts of its appearance vary, the god Vivec held it until it came into the possession of the Nerevarine. It was retrieved along with Sunder by the Dragonborn in 4E 201.
