How is this an "example of a template?" Solomon1972 What does all of this mean? " < includeonly > First unnamed parameter: '''{{{1| }}}''' < br > Italic parameter: ''{{{italic| }}}'' < /includeonly > < noinclude > {{/Doc}} < /noinclude > "

The Example template is meant to be used when you need a template to use as an example when writing documentation. Templates are one of the most advanced topics that editors will come across. The purpose of them is just to duplicate the same code for things that would otherwise be really repetitive to write. One of the most common templates is probably {{FC}}, an abbreviation of "font colour", which changes the colour of the text provided. So, for example, "{{FC|red|This text is red.}}" would produce: "This text is red."
As for the example code itself, because it's intended as an example, it's fairly nonsensical and explaining it would take a while. The documentation we have about templates will give you a really basic idea of what that kind of code is doing. It's also a good idea to check out our Quick Editing Guide, if you haven't already. It doesn't get into explanations, but it does at least give you a simple overview of the more common editing commands, including the FC template. Getting Started also has some useful info in it. If, after all that, you still want an explanation of what's going on inside the template, just search for each term on Wikipedia's documentation. It's much more in depth that anything we have, but it's also a lot more technical. If you still have questions, please feel free to ask and I'll do my best to explain it. Thanks, Robin Hood! That was a great, personable, down-to-Earth explanation! Solomon1972
